Deciphering Monomon's Gibberish

  • 0:12 - 0:15
So the lore tablets in the Archive are one
of the biggest mysteries in all of Hollow
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    Knight.
  • 0:16 - 0:20
On the surface, they don’t seem to make
    a lick of goddamn sense.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
But if we can channel our inner high school
English class student, we can do a little
  • 0:24 - 0:28
“close reading” to try and figure out
    what it all means.
  • 0:28 - 0:33
Now if you’ve ever read the popular nonfiction
work of George Orwell entitled “1984”,
  • 0:33 - 0:37
then the syntax of these tablets will probably
    be familiar to you.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
The tablets don’t form complete sentences.
  • 0:39 - 0:44
Instead, we have to look at the keywords and
the order in which they appear to try and
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    decipher their meaning.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
There are also just seemly random words and
letters that I think we should just completely
  • 0:49 - 0:56
ignore like ABA, EM, CH, O and THIR.
  • 0:56 - 1:02
But maybe if we rearrange these letters, it
will form an anagram that will help us uncover
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    more of Hollow Knight’s lore.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    Holy shit!
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    [X-Files Theme intesifies]
  • 1:09 - 1:13
This first tablet is discussing the sealing
of the Temple of the Black Egg, where the
  • 1:13 - 1:16
Hollow Knight can be found in the final game.
  • 1:16 - 1:20
For this first line, the use of the words
“yolk” and “shell” point us to the
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    Black Egg Temple.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
This temple is then used to “gate” the
Hollow Knight so that it remains separated
  • 1:26 - 1:28
from the rest of the world.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
The second line gives us an idea of the order
    of containment.
  • 1:31 - 1:36
The Radiance, or the Light, is sealed inside
the Vessel, which is sealed inside the Temple
  • 1:36 - 1:40
of the Black Egg, which has a seal placed
    over it.
  • 1:40 - 1:45
As for this third line, it is explaining that
the seal over the exterior of the temple is
  • 1:45 - 1:48
hidden within the Dreamers, Herrah, Monomon
    and Lurien.
  • 1:48 - 1:54
“Intwixt” and “Atwist” must be some
weird Australian slang Team Cherry decided
  • 1:54 - 1:57
to use, because here in America, they aren’t
    real words.
  • 1:57 - 2:03
I’m guessing they are variations of the
word betwixt, which just means between.
  • 2:03 - 2:08
In other words, all of this is occurring between
the realms of the physical world and the Dream
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    world.
  • 2:09 - 2:14
Finally, this will lead to the containment
of the Radiance, and the end to her “ungrowth”.
  • 2:14 - 2:19
The second lore tablet is describing the difference
between the Pale King and the Radiance.
  • 2:19 - 2:24
In this first line, it is explaining how the
Pale King, or the “Kinglight” is responsible
  • 2:24 - 2:28
for growth and granting the bugs of Hallownest
    the ability to think freely.
  • 2:28 - 2:33
“Inkind” likely means the inclusion of
different kinds, or in other words variety,
  • 2:33 - 2:36
since all of the bugs can think for themselves.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    Then there’s the word “Enfield”.
  • 2:38 - 2:43
My best guess for this word is that it is
referencing a suburb in Adelaide, South Australia,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
the city that Team Cherry is based in.
  • 2:45 - 2:49
So is Team Cherry trying to tell us that Monomon
is actually aware of the fact that she is
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    in a video game?
  • 2:51 - 2:55
I mean, that seems like the cool hip thing
for indie devs to do nowadays.
  • 2:55 - 3:00
Of course, the Shrine of Believers basically
confirms that Hallownest was created by a
  • 3:00 - 3:05
group of beings from a different dimension,
or in other words, by humans on Earth, so
  • 3:05 - 3:08
it’s really not that big of a stretch.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
But the more likely explanation for the use
of the word Enfield in this tablet is that
  • 3:11 - 3:14
Team Cherry is just fucking with us once again.
  • 3:14 - 3:18
I mean, that would also explain the text on
    this tablet too.
  • 3:18 - 3:22
The next line in Monomon’s poem tells us
that the Radiance, or the “Oldlight”,
  • 3:22 - 3:26
who is tied to dreams and essence, leads to
    ungrowth.
  • 3:26 - 3:30
We can assume that by ungrowth, Monomon is
talking about how the Radiance causes her
  • 3:30 - 3:35
subjects to lose their own thoughts, and become
    connected to her hivemind.
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    This third line confuses me.
  • 3:36 - 3:41
The Radiance will likely be responsible for
this endthink, but I’m unsure about what
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    themkin is referring to.
  • 3:43 - 3:48
The moths are the kin of the Radiance, while
the Vessels are the kin of the Pale King.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
Either way, I’m not sure what is being implied
    here.
  • 3:50 - 3:52
The last line is pretty straightforward though.
  • 3:52 - 3:57
If the Radiance’s powers are left uncontained,
it will result in an end to life as the bugs
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    of Hallownest know it.
  • 3:59 - 4:02
This final tablet is about the creation of
    the vessels.
  • 4:02 - 4:06
This first line is saying that there is an
abundance of outer shells that have absent
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    innards.
  • 4:07 - 4:13
The next line says that void should be placed
within the absences, or within the outer shell.
  • 4:13 - 4:17
At this point, I’d like to say that I think
that the shell Monomon is referring to is
  • 4:17 - 4:20
the shell that Vessels wear on their heads.
  • 4:20 - 4:24
Some people call these things masks, but if
you look at the Hollow Knight instruction
  • 4:24 - 4:29
manual, like I’m sure everybody did, it
states that the Knight wears a shell, which
  • 4:29 - 4:31
has a strength represented in masks.
  • 4:31 - 4:34
Now, is it really that important of a distinction?
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    Well, yeah!
  • 4:36 - 4:38
Everything is important in this game!
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    Even this bitch!
  • 4:40 - 4:44
The third line explains that the shells and
the void should be weaved together.
  • 4:44 - 4:47
Now there are two words in here that raise
    a couple of red flags.
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    First, let’s talk about “Mater”.
  • 4:49 - 4:53
Mater is an old fashioned word for mother,
so I’m guessing that Monomon is talking
  • 4:53 - 4:58
about the White Lady, since, in my opinion,
she helped create the empty shells that would
  • 4:58 - 5:00
be used to create the Vessels.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
The word “weave” is also interesting,
because in the game, there is a group of beings
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    called the Weavers.
  • 5:05 - 5:08
Unfortunately, the Weavers seemed to have
noped the fuck out of Hallownest before the
  • 5:08 - 5:12
game started, so we can’t really ask them
    or anything.
  • 5:12 - 5:16
We do know from Midwife that the weavers are
    capable of creating spells.
  • 5:16 - 5:19
Is it possible that the Weavers helped create
    the vessels?
  • 5:19 - 5:25
Well, the Vessels are already part Pale King,
part White Lady, and part Void.
  • 5:25 - 5:27
And now we want to add the Weavers in too?
  • 5:27 - 5:30
Well, I guess...why the fuck not?
  • 5:30 - 5:32
Maybe Elder Bug was involved too.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
Maybe the Vessels are 2% Fungoon shit!
  • 5:35 - 5:40
As for this last line, it is basically saying
that the Void of the Vessel is contained by
  • 5:40 - 5:42
the outer part, or the shell.
  • 5:42 - 5:45
I’m not quite sure what “peer is referring
    to.
  • 5:45 - 5:49
Maybe it is just saying that the Vessels are
peers, or of equal status, or it could mean
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    peer as in looking intently.
  • 5:52 - 5:53
    Not quite sure, honestly.
  • 5:53 - 5:59
Okay cool, so the three lore tablets in the
Archive all pertain to the plan used to try
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    and stop the Radiance.
  • 6:01 - 6:02
This means one of three things.
  • 6:02 - 6:08
Either the Pale King told Monomon about this
plan, she found out about it on her own, or
  • 6:08 - 6:11
she actually helped the Pale King devise the
    plan.
  • 6:11 - 6:13
I think it’s safe to say she didn’t find
    out on her own.
  • 6:13 - 6:16
    I mean, that’s a really specific plan.
  • 6:16 - 6:20
That’s like pissing into a water glass from
    atop the empire state building.
  • 6:20 - 6:23
So maybe the Pale King told her the plan.
  • 6:23 - 6:27
This is possible, but why would he tell her
the plan if all she had to do was go to sleep
  • 6:27 - 6:28
    as a Dreamer?
  • 6:28 - 6:34
I mean, maybe she just wanted to know out
of curiosity, or needed to be convinced.
  • 6:34 - 6:37
After all, she is pretty much dying for this
    whole thing.
  • 6:37 - 6:41
    But that’s a boring explanation, and I’m
trying to make a lore video here that is long
  • 6:41 - 6:44
enough to make at least three more dick and
    shit jokes.
  • 6:44 - 6:47
So, let’s just say “no” to that theory.
  • 6:47 - 6:51
But honestly, I do think there is a good case
to make that Monomon was involved with the
  • 6:51 - 6:53
Pale King’s plan from the beginning.
  • 6:53 - 6:54
    Why is that?
  • 6:54 - 6:57
Well, there’s one damning piece of evidence
    that supports this.
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    The fucking jellyfish.
  • 6:59 - 7:04
Now in my first video, I asked a fair question
about why jellyfish were in a game about bugs.
  • 7:04 - 7:08
The obvious answer to this question was that
the jellyfish are merely Team Cherry’s way
  • 7:08 - 7:14
of pay homage to another famous game with
    jellyfish creatures; SpongeBob SquarePants:
  • 7:14 - 7:15
    Revenge of the Flying Dutchman.
  • 7:15 - 7:18
But when I asked the question, I meant it
    from a lore perspective.
  • 7:18 - 7:23
Well, there is a lore explanation that has
been around for a while, and it does make
  • 7:23 - 7:25
sense, even if it is kind of speculative.
  • 7:25 - 7:31
I do like it though because it fits in nicely
with what we have talked about so far in the
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    video.
  • 7:32 - 7:34
The jellyfish are Monomon’s artificial creations.
  • 7:34 - 7:38
The Hunter posits a few theories as to what
the jellyfish are, saying they might be the
  • 7:38 - 7:43
spirit of a dead ancestor, the brain of a
larger creature, or some kind of egg.
  • 7:43 - 7:49
Well, these are all wrong, and are clearly
a clever red herring by Team Cherry to mislead
  • 7:49 - 7:52
us as to the jellyfishes' true nature.
  • 7:52 - 7:56
In all of their Dream Nail dialogue, these
    things keep mentioning Monomon.
  • 7:56 - 8:00
And the Hunter’s Journal entry for Uumuu
claims that Uumuu is acting as a guardian
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    for Monomon.
  • 8:02 - 8:06
And that there are strange and unnatural things
    lurking in the Fog Canyon.
  • 8:06 - 8:11
So it’s unlikely that these things have
    any origins stemming from nature.
  • 8:11 - 8:12
Now I know what you’re thinking.
  • 8:12 - 8:16
This might be a clever red herring by Team
Cherry to mislead us as to the jellyfishes’
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    true nature.
  • 8:18 - 8:19
    But that’s stupid.
  • 8:19 - 8:22
There’s no reason Team Cherry would ever
    do something like that.
  • 8:22 - 8:26
Also, why is Monomon keeping these charged
    Lumaflies inside of a tank?
  • 8:26 - 8:31
Is it because electricity is an important
component in the process of creating life?
  • 8:31 - 8:34
And just look at the structure that Monomon
has in the heart of the Archive.
  • 8:34 - 8:37
    It’s a giant test tube.
  • 8:37 - 8:40
Clearly this was used to create her unholy
    gelatinous abominations.
  • 8:40 - 8:47
Okay, so let’s say that the jellyfish are
indeed the results of Monomon’s Frankenstein-esc
  • 8:47 - 8:48
    experiments.
  • 8:48 - 8:50
What does that have to do with Monomon helping
    the Pale King?
  • 8:50 - 8:55
Well, Monomon’s actions here seem pretty
similar to how the Pale King was creating
  • 8:55 - 8:58
    intelligent void Vessels and constructs.
  • 8:58 - 9:02
So it’s possible that Monomon actually did
work with the Pale King to help conduct his
  • 9:02 - 9:07
experiments, since she was basically doing
the exact same thing, animating matter.
  • 9:07 - 9:12
But it is hard to say, since we don’t really
know how the jellyfish were actually created.
  • 9:12 - 9:17
The King poured the liquidy, goopy void it
into a mold to create his constructs, while
  • 9:17 - 9:21
we have no idea how Monomon created the jellyfish
    children.
  • 9:21 - 9:26
Regardless, it works thematically, which I
know sounds like a cop out, but that’s just
  • 9:26 - 9:28
    because it is one.
  • 9:28 - 9:30
    And there you have it.
  • 9:30 - 9:34
The lore tablets in the Archive basically
spell out the details of the Pale King’s
  • 9:34 - 9:36
    plan to contain the Radiance.
  • 9:36 - 9:40
The three tablets reinforce our understanding
of the lore, but for the most part, they don’t
  • 9:40 - 9:43
really add anything new to what we already
    know.
  • 9:43 - 9:47
The only thing mentioned in these tablets
that sort of affects our view of the lore
  • 9:47 - 9:49
is the inclusion of the word “weave”.
  • 9:49 - 9:54
Overall, the most important thing about these
tablets is what implications they have on
  • 9:54 - 9:58
Monomon’s involvement with the Pale King’s
    plan to save Hallownest.
  • 9:58 - 10:02
Now if you haven’t seen my first Hollow
Knight lore video, I highly recommend you
  • 10:02 - 10:03
    check it out.
  • 10:03 - 10:07
It is a very informative video that covers
a lot of Hollow Knight’s lore.
  • 10:07 - 10:11
If you have seen my video, I should tell you
that it’s complete shit and full of inaccurate
  • 10:11 - 10:13
    claims.
  • 10:13 - 10:16
In that video, I talked about how the Pale
King approached the three Dreamers after they
  • 10:16 - 10:20
had already tried to lock away the Radiance
    inside of the Hollow Knight.
  • 10:20 - 10:23
Oh, how naive I was in my youth.
  • 10:23 - 10:27
Now that I am older and wiser, I think it’s
more likely that the dreamers were involved
  • 10:27 - 10:31
early on, and that Monomon was especially
    involved from the beginning.
  • 10:31 - 10:35
I think a lot of this confusion over the Hollow
Knight timeline will be cleared up in the
  • 10:35 - 10:42
upcoming Hornet DLC, since I’m like 93.5%
sure that it’s a prequel, but until then,
  • 10:42 - 10:45
we’ll just have to work with the breadcrumbs
that Team Cherry has left for us.
