    right now
  • 0:07 - 0:09

    notification bell
  • 0:21 - 0:23
select all notifications that way you
  • 0:23 - 0:25
get alerted anytime i upload a new video
  • 0:25 - 0:26
now whether you're new to the hobby or
  • 0:26 - 0:28
you've been around for a while
  • 0:28 - 0:30
eventually you're probably going to end
  • 0:30 - 0:31
up ordering some tarantulas off one of
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    these amazing websites
  • 0:33 - 0:34
if you don't know where to order
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    tarantulas and other invertebrates
  • 0:36 - 0:38
online then go to my website
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    thetarantulacollective.com hit the
  • 0:40 - 0:42
resources tab at the top of the page
  • 0:42 - 0:44
i've got a whole list of online dealers
  • 0:44 - 0:46
a lot of them have discount codes where
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    you can order tarantulas scorpions
  • 0:48 - 0:50
manuses i mean all kinds of inverts and
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    reptiles most of the time
  • 0:52 - 0:54
ordering online gives you access to a
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    lot more species
  • 0:55 - 0:57
at much better prices so eventually
  • 0:57 - 0:59
almost everyone in the hobby ends up
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    ordering online at least once
  • 1:01 - 1:03
but i get messages and comments all the
  • 1:03 - 1:04
time from people that are nervous
  • 1:04 - 1:06
ordering online because they don't know
  • 1:06 - 1:08
what to expect or how to unbox them
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    safely so today
  • 1:09 - 1:14
    that's what we're gonna learn
  • 1:15 - 1:21
    [Music]
  • 1:21 - 1:22
so to start off you want to make sure
  • 1:22 - 1:24
you're ordering your tarantulas from a
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    reputable dealer with a website
  • 1:26 - 1:28
or a breeder that can provide references
  • 1:28 - 1:30
that way you know you're not going to
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    get ripped off or
  • 1:31 - 1:34
sent a tarantula that's wild caught or
  • 1:34 - 1:35
end up getting something that you didn't
  • 1:35 - 1:36
    even really want
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    [Music]
  • 1:39 - 1:40
after that you want to make sure that
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    they're getting shipped fedex overnight
  • 1:42 - 1:44
now i know that's a lot more expensive
  • 1:44 - 1:46
than other shipping options but you want
  • 1:46 - 1:48
your tarantulas or other exotic pets to
  • 1:48 - 1:50
spend the least amount of time in the
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    mail as possible
  • 1:51 - 1:53
and almost anyone selling live animals
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    that's reputable
  • 1:54 - 1:59
    will only offer fedex overnight
  • 2:00 - 2:06
    [Music]
  • 2:07 - 2:09
let's look at the tools you're gonna
  • 2:09 - 2:11
need to unbox these tarantulas now i
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    suggest you have a knife
  • 2:12 - 2:16
tweezers ketchup a paintbrush or a
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    chopstick or
  • 2:17 - 2:18
something long and skinny and of course
  • 2:18 - 2:21
a spray bottle or something to drip
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    water
  • 2:22 - 2:29
    [Music]
  • 2:29 - 2:30
now you always want to make sure that
  • 2:30 - 2:32
you prepare the enclosures beforehand to
  • 2:32 - 2:34
the best of your ability you'll usually
  • 2:34 - 2:34
    know about
  • 2:34 - 2:36
what size of tarantula you should be
  • 2:36 - 2:38
expecting now i like to set up all the
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    enclosures before the package actually
  • 2:40 - 2:41
arrives and make sure i have
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    smaller and larger enclosure options
  • 2:43 - 2:45
available in case the species is bigger
  • 2:45 - 2:47
or smaller than i was anticipating this
  • 2:47 - 2:49
is very important when it comes to
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    spider links
  • 2:50 - 2:52
because they can easily escape through
  • 2:52 - 2:54
ventilation holes so the enclosure that
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    you have prepared
  • 2:55 - 2:56
may have vents that are large enough for
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    that sling to escape
  • 2:58 - 3:00
so you want to have an option with much
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    smaller vent holes available
  • 3:01 - 3:06
    in case you need
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    [Music]
  • 3:10 - 3:12
no matter what species of spiderling
  • 3:12 - 3:13
that you're getting you want to make
  • 3:13 - 3:15
sure that you keep that substrate a
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    little damp it's very
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    easy for spiderlings to dehydrate
  • 3:19 - 3:21
because they lack the waxy coating that
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    adult tarantulas have
  • 3:22 - 3:24
that keeps a lot of that moisture in you
  • 3:24 - 3:25
don't want to go too far
  • 3:25 - 3:27
and make the substrate swampy but you
  • 3:27 - 3:29
don't want it to be bone dry either
  • 3:29 - 3:32
you gotta find a happy medium
  • 3:32 - 3:36
    [Music]
  • 3:38 - 3:40
now it is best to have the package held
  • 3:40 - 3:42
at the local fedex hub so you can go and
  • 3:42 - 3:44
pick it up first thing in the morning
  • 3:44 - 3:45
but i understand that's not always an
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    option
  • 3:46 - 3:47
some people live an hour or two away
  • 3:47 - 3:49
from the nearest hub in which case you
  • 3:49 - 3:51
want to make sure that you have taken
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    time off work
  • 3:52 - 3:54
and you are there at your house waiting
  • 3:54 - 3:57
by the door for that package to arrive
  • 3:57 - 3:59
or at the very least you have somebody
  • 3:59 - 4:01
there waiting to receive it for you you
  • 4:01 - 4:03
don't want fedex to attempt a delivery
  • 4:03 - 4:03
    and
  • 4:03 - 4:05
not deliver because no one was there to
  • 4:05 - 4:07
answer the door that's just another day
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    your slings are gonna spin
  • 4:08 - 4:10
in the back of a hot or extremely cold
  • 4:10 - 4:12
truck and then overnight at the fedex up
  • 4:12 - 4:14
only to be shipped out again the next
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    day
  • 4:16 - 4:18
so make sure you or someone you trust is
  • 4:18 - 4:21
there to pick up the package
  • 4:22 - 4:24
now if you're picking it up at the hub
  • 4:24 - 4:26
make sure you get it as soon as possible
  • 4:26 - 4:27
personally i don't even wait for the
  • 4:27 - 4:29
notification that it's ready for pickup
  • 4:29 - 4:30
now i know normally they're ready around
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    9 30 at my home
  • 4:32 - 4:34
so i'm usually already on my way there
  • 4:34 - 4:36
when i get notification that it's ready
  • 4:36 - 4:37
to be picked up and also be sure you
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    bring a photo id
  • 4:38 - 4:39
because unless the person behind the
  • 4:39 - 4:41
counter knows you really well your id
  • 4:41 - 4:44
is required to pick up packages
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    [Applause]
  • 4:50 - 4:52
now once you get that package and you
  • 4:52 - 4:54
bring it home or maybe you're on your
  • 4:54 - 4:55
way to work you want to open it up
  • 4:55 - 4:57
immediately a lot of times spiderlings
  • 4:57 - 4:59
are shipped with a heat pack or a cool
  • 4:59 - 5:00
pack depending on the weather so you
  • 5:00 - 5:02
want to open up the box and get the heat
  • 5:02 - 5:05
pack out as soon as possible
  • 5:05 - 5:06
so whether i'm taking it to work or
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    bringing it back home
  • 5:08 - 5:11
i'm opening that box right away and
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    pulling those spiderlings out
  • 5:13 - 5:15
now if you're unable to re-house them as
  • 5:15 - 5:16
    soon as you get them
  • 5:16 - 5:19
place the vials somewhere safe like on a
  • 5:19 - 5:21
table where they can't roll off
  • 5:21 - 5:23
on their side that's a lot better than
  • 5:23 - 5:24
leaving them standing straight up make
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    sure they can't
  • 5:25 - 5:27
roll off or get knocked off by your cat
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    or a small
  • 5:28 - 5:32
child and most dealers offer a live
  • 5:32 - 5:33
    arrival guarantee
  • 5:33 - 5:35
meaning if it arrives dead you can
  • 5:35 - 5:37
contact them and they will replace that
  • 5:37 - 5:39
spiderlink but most of them require you
  • 5:39 - 5:41
to notify them within two hours of
  • 5:41 - 5:42
    receiving the package
  • 5:42 - 5:44
in those cases even if i can't re-house
  • 5:44 - 5:45
them right away i like to go ahead and
  • 5:45 - 5:47
open up the vial and look inside
  • 5:47 - 5:49
make sure the spiderling's moving and
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    everything is okay
  • 5:51 - 5:53
and if you have any issues read their
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    live arrival guarantee
  • 5:55 - 5:57
you may need to take pictures and email
  • 5:57 - 5:58
them to whoever you bought them from
  • 5:58 - 6:00
and get that process started as soon as
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    possible
  • 6:06 - 6:07
now once you're ready to open up and
  • 6:07 - 6:09
re-house these slings you want to slowly
  • 6:09 - 6:10
    open the lid
  • 6:10 - 6:12
and use tweezers to remove the top layer
  • 6:12 - 6:15
    of paper towel
  • 6:15 - 6:17
then you want to grab the edge of the
  • 6:17 - 6:19
paper towel as far down as you can with
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    your tweezers without touching the
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    tarantula
  • 6:22 - 6:25
and slowly pull it out of the vial
  • 6:25 - 6:27
now do not pull on the paper tubing if
  • 6:27 - 6:28
    it's starting to twist
  • 6:28 - 6:30
the tubes normally will come out very
  • 6:30 - 6:32
easily but there are sometimes that they
  • 6:32 - 6:33
    get stuck
  • 6:33 - 6:35
and if the paper tubing starts to twist
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    the spiderling could become entangled
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    and get injured
  • 6:39 - 6:41
once you have that out of the vial
  • 6:41 - 6:42
slowly unroll the towel into the
  • 6:42 - 6:45
    enclosure
  • 6:45 - 6:47
or gently begin squeezing from the
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    bottom towards the opening
  • 6:49 - 6:50
and let the sling walk right on out
  • 6:50 - 6:59
    [Music]
  • 7:00 - 7:02
if your tarantula is not moving it may
  • 7:02 - 7:04
be molting so you should just leave it
  • 7:04 - 7:06
alone for a little while and see if it
  • 7:06 - 7:06
    moves at all
  • 7:06 - 7:08
a lot of times the stress of shipping
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    can cause a tarantula to
  • 7:10 - 7:12
mold early also if it's really cold out
  • 7:12 - 7:14
and your tarantula is not moving
  • 7:14 - 7:16
let it sit out at room temperature for
  • 7:16 - 7:18
20 or 30 minutes keeping a watchful eye
  • 7:18 - 7:21
    the entire time
  • 7:21 - 7:25
    [Music]
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    when temperatures get low tarantulas
  • 7:27 - 7:29
become very lethargic and may not move a
  • 7:29 - 7:30
    lot or at
  • 7:30 - 7:32
all but as they warm up they will become
  • 7:32 - 7:33
    more active
  • 7:33 - 7:37
    [Music]
  • 7:37 - 7:40
once your tarantula is in its enclosure
  • 7:40 - 7:42
gently mist the side or drip water on
  • 7:42 - 7:44
the side so they have access to a drink
  • 7:44 - 7:45
even if they were only in the mail
  • 7:45 - 7:47
overnight they may be very thirsty and
  • 7:47 - 7:48
will want to get something to drink
  • 7:48 - 7:51
right away mist both the walls and the
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    substrate sometimes tarantulas get
  • 7:52 - 7:55
    dehydrated during the shipping process
  • 7:55 - 7:57
so having water available is very
  • 7:57 - 8:00
    important
  • 8:02 - 8:03
    [Music]
  • 8:03 - 8:05
now personally i don't feed my
  • 8:05 - 8:07
tarantulas the day that they arrive
  • 8:07 - 8:09
i usually wait at least 24 hours before
  • 8:09 - 8:14
    attempting to feed
  • 8:14 - 8:16
but if your spiderling looks very thin
  • 8:16 - 8:17
    and you're worried about it
  • 8:17 - 8:19
you can go ahead and attempt feeding but
  • 8:19 - 8:21
if it doesn't take that prey right away
  • 8:21 - 8:23
i would go ahead and remove it and wait
  • 8:23 - 8:28
    till the next day
  • 8:28 - 8:30
leaving a live feeder in their enclosure
  • 8:30 - 8:32
after they were just rehoused can cause
  • 8:32 - 8:32
    them
  • 8:32 - 8:34
even more stress which could lead to
  • 8:34 - 8:36
them waiting even longer before eating
  • 8:36 - 8:39
    and settling
  • 8:39 - 8:42
    in
  • 8:42 - 8:44
and i'll say it again always make sure
  • 8:44 - 8:45
    the ventilation holes
  • 8:45 - 8:47
in the enclosure are smaller than the
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    carapace of the spiderling
  • 8:49 - 8:50
last thing you want to do is spend all
  • 8:50 - 8:52
this time and money acquiring this
  • 8:52 - 8:54
species only to have it walk right out
  • 8:54 - 8:56
of a vent hole and disappear into your
  • 8:56 - 8:57
    house
  • 8:57 - 9:00
    [Music]
  • 9:03 - 9:05
    unboxing and re-housing tarantulas that
  • 9:05 - 9:07
you received in the mail can be very
  • 9:07 - 9:09
stressful and a little intimidating but
  • 9:09 - 9:10
once you get the hang of it
  • 9:10 - 9:12
you'll realize it's not that hard at all
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    these people selling tarantulas online
  • 9:14 - 9:16
know what they're doing have a lot of
  • 9:16 - 9:18
experience and issues with shipping or
  • 9:18 - 9:19
    receiving dead species
  • 9:19 - 9:22
is an exception not a rule so hopefully
  • 9:22 - 9:23
you learned something or at least
  • 9:23 - 9:24
developed a little more confidence when
  • 9:24 - 9:26
it comes to unboxing tarantulas you
  • 9:26 - 9:28
ordered online now if you're curious
  • 9:28 - 9:29
about the best way to feed your
  • 9:29 - 9:31
spiderlings i actually made an entire
  • 9:31 - 9:33
video on that topic that you can watch
  • 9:33 - 9:34
right here and if you're new to keeping
  • 9:34 - 9:36
    tarantulas i put together an
  • 9:36 - 9:37
entire playlist just for you that you
  • 9:37 - 9:39
can watch right here as always i

    for buying tarantula collective

    merchandise
  • 9:44 - 9:52
and i will see you next tuesday
  • 9:53 - 9:56
    you
