    That's a song
    that was counting dead Indians
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    back on the trails
    when they would kill Indians.

    -We'd see all these little kids
    in uniform,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    and we'd be wondering
    how come they're like that.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    We weren't dressed like that,
    but these little kids were.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    -I remember being younger,
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    growing up on the reservation,
    and being told,
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    "Don't trust white people;
    don't listen to them."
  • 2:18 - 2:19
    Never told why.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
    (recording) The government schools
    are constantly being built,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    and hospitals added.
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    We bring them in,
    clean them up,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    and start them on their way
    to civilization.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    -So I would ask social services
    and human services audience,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    "How many people know
    about residential boarding schools?"
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    How many people here do?
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    This never makes it
    into the history books.
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    This is never talked about.
  • 2:41 - 2:45
    -Why did those schools get started,
    and who started them,
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    and what was the rationale behind it?
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    -The first general policy was
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    "the only good Indian
    was a dead Indian,"
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    that we needed to be killed,
    exterminated, eradicated.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    Once they realized that's
    a little bit more difficult to do,
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    is to have mass genocide
    of a population,
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    then the policies changed
    from killing
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    to "killing the Indian
    and saving the man."
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    There's a General Pratt
    who is well famous and documented
  • 3:08 - 3:12
    for using those words,
    "to kill the Indian and save the man,"
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    and that we are subhuman,
    and that our ways are savage,
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    and we needed to be civilized.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    Well, the governments in Canada
    and the United States
  • 3:19 - 3:25
    followed that policy up until the 1980s,
    in one form or another.
  • 3:25 - 3:28

    There is a boarding school far, far away,
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    where we get mush and milk
    three times a day.
  • 3:32 - 3:34

    ♪ Oh, how the huskies run ♪

    ♪ when they hear their dinner bell. ♪
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    ♪ Oh, how the huskies run,
    three times a day. ♪

    Like I say, I went to the Mush Hole
    when I was four years old.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    I was there for nine years.
  • 3:45 - 3:49
    And once in a while,
    we'd come home in summertime,
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    but not all the time.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    When the counselors came
    and told my dad
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    that he couldn't raise us properly,
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    we were at the Mush Hole one week,
    and our heads were full of bugs.
  • 3:59 - 4:02
    (survivor 2) There was a lot of sad times,
    but I mean, like,
  • 4:02 - 4:05
    I didn't get, like, angry
    and have any resentment
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    till after I got out.
  • 4:06 - 4:10
    'Cause I didn't know,
    from just five-and-a-half to sixteen,
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    I thought it was just,
    like, a normal upbringing,
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    like, to not have no parents
    and stuff like that [chuckling].
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    So that's, uh--
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    And after I got out,
    and then they thought,
  • 4:20 - 4:25
    well, this is the way
    they were supposed to be treating us.
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    (survivor 3) I think my mother
    couldn't take care of us
  • 4:27 - 4:31
    because our father was into alcohol.
  • 4:31 - 4:34
    Me and my sister,
    we started there
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    in 1945.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    I was five years old at the time.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    -We had all our hair cut off.
  • 4:44 - 4:48
    We were made baldies;
    we were really bald.
  • 4:48 - 4:52
    And that wasn't
    a very good feeling to have.
  • 4:52 - 4:57
    And they used to call us
    "Mush Hole baldies."
  • 4:57 - 5:01
    That's what the kids
    on the reserve used to call us.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    -Well, we can go in now.
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    I mean, this is going
    to take, like, all day, eh?
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    [laughing]
    -Looks like it.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    -We were taken to the hospital
  • 5:19 - 5:23
    to get checked out for nits
    and whatever,
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    I guess that was,
    you know.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    Well, they checked us out, you know.
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    Then they split us.
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    The school was split in age group,
  • 5:35 - 5:38
    and by boys and girls.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    Boys were on one side,
    the girls were on one side.
  • 5:41 - 5:46
    And they went from the lower age
    up to high school level.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
    -My ma was gonna walk out here
    and go to the store,
  • 5:50 - 5:56
    and, at five-and-a-half,
    my sister tells me that
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    I grabbed my ma's leg,
  • 5:58 - 6:01
    and of course we were all just crying.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
    The whole four of us were just crying.
  • 6:03 - 6:07
    Like, you know, 'cause my ma
    was going to leave us here.
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    So I grabbed my ma's leg
  • 6:09 - 6:13
    and, well, crying and that,
  • 6:13 - 6:17
    and just kinda, like, hollering,
    like, "Ma don't leave me."
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    "Don't leave me," like, you know.
    So...
  • 6:20 - 6:23
    But anyway,
    while that was going on,
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    a supervisor came over
    and just kinda grabbed me
  • 6:26 - 6:29
    and took me off my ma's leg,
    and uh...
  • 6:30 - 6:33
    And then my ma just walked out,
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    and I never seen her.
  • 6:36 - 6:39
    For those ten years,
    I don't see her.
  • 6:39 - 6:43
    She never come to see me once.
    I don't know why.
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    -They took my brother away
  • 6:45 - 6:48
    to where he was supposed to stay.
  • 6:48 - 6:51
    And my sister,
    she just went on her own.
  • 6:53 - 6:58
    I was with most of the four-
    and five-year-olds.
  • 6:58 - 7:02
    We didn't go to school
    'cause we were too young.
  • 7:02 - 7:06
    -Yet, to the agencies
    of the government,
  • 7:06 - 7:09
    they are being rapidly brought
    from their state
  • 7:09 - 7:14
    of comparative savagery and barbarism
    to one of civilization.
  • 7:14 - 7:18
    -When we used our language--
    at that young age, too,
  • 7:18 - 7:21
    we were just learning, so...
  • 7:21 - 7:23
    They used to wash
    our mouth out with soap.
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    They would take
    the whole bunch of us
  • 7:25 - 7:29
    and march us to the shower--
    cold shower--
  • 7:29 - 7:33
    and they'd throw us in there
    and beat us along the way.
  • 7:34 - 7:38
    That was a routine thing, I guess.
    I don't know.
  • 7:38 - 7:41
    But...
    that taught us, you know.
  • 7:41 - 7:44
    -They'd throw us
    in this dark press room
  • 7:44 - 7:48
    where they kept
    all our Sunday "go to meeting'" clothes.
  • 7:48 - 7:52
    And they'd throw Rosemary
    and I in there
  • 7:52 - 7:55
    and tell us the rats
    were going to get us.
  • 7:55 - 7:59
    But I didn't know then
    why I was being thrown in there,
  • 7:59 - 8:02
    and I used to wonder,
    what did I do?
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    And I would cry,
    and Rosemary would cry,
  • 8:05 - 8:08
    and we cried and cried
    for hours in there,
  • 8:08 - 8:12
    not knowing why we were in there,
    and, uh...
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    They'd take us out.
  • 8:15 - 8:17
    And when I did get to learn
    a little bit of English,
  • 8:17 - 8:19
    I knew then
    they were throwing us in there
  • 8:19 - 8:22
    because we wouldn't speak English.
  • 8:22 - 8:26
    And... I must have been stubborn
    right from the day I was born
  • 8:26 - 8:29
    because I thought to myself,
    "I'll never speak English, either."
  • 8:29 - 8:32
    "You want me to speak English?
    I won't speak English."
  • 8:32 - 8:35
    So I didn't speak at all
    for two whole years,
  • 8:35 - 8:40
    because I figured if I spoke Indian
    I'd get a lickin',
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    and if I spoke English,
  • 8:42 - 8:46
    then it would be against everything
    that I stood for,
  • 8:46 - 8:48
    and so I didn't speak at all.
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    -But today,
    they all speak English,
  • 8:50 - 8:54
    and some have taken business courses,
  • 8:54 - 8:58
    home economics,
    and other higher training.

    Took us into another room down there,
  • 8:59 - 9:01
    and maybe down in the play room,
  • 9:01 - 9:02
    we took all our clothes off,
  • 9:02 - 9:07
    and we put the clothes of the school on.
  • 9:07 - 9:09
    And they give us a number.
  • 9:09 - 9:12
    So my number was, like, 48.
  • 9:12 - 9:15
    And my brother was 36.

    My family was the state-run institute.
  • 9:19 - 9:23
    And the nickname
    for the Thomas Indian School is "Salem".
  • 9:25 - 9:28
    And Salem was derived from "asylum."
  • 9:28 - 9:33
    And you now what an asylum is;
    it's for crazy people.
  • 9:33 - 9:37
    So we were thought of
    as being crazy, I guess.
  • 9:38 - 9:41
    -They were just considered bad people,
    bad children,
  • 9:41 - 9:44
    but they weren't bad children, okay?
  • 9:44 - 9:47
    They were placed there
    for so many different reasons,
  • 9:47 - 9:52
    but not because of any kind
    of delinquency on their part.

Unseen Tears documents the stories of boarding school survivors, their families, and social service providers.
