George Carlin on Soft Language
-
0:02 - 0:05.and one of the reasons, is because we were
-
0:05 - 0:08using that soft language. The language that
-
0:08 - 0:11takes the life out of life.
-
0:11 - 0:15And it makes things worse. I'll give you another
-
0:15 - 0:18example. Some time during my life..some time during my
-
0:18 - 0:26life, toilet paper became bathroom tissue. I wasn't notified of this, no one asked me if I agreed with it
-
0:26 - 0:32it just happened. Toilet paper became bathroom tissue. Sneakers became running shoes.
-
0:32 - 0:40False teeth became dental appliances. Medicine became medication. Information became
-
0:40 - 0:49direcotry assistance. The dump, became land fill, car crashes became automobile accidents,
-
0:49 - 0:57partly cloudy became partly sunny. Motels became motor lodges, house trailers became mobile
-
0:57 - 1:06homes, used cars became previously owned transportation, room service became guest room
-
1:06 - 1:16dining. And constipation became occasional irregularity. [laughter]
-
1:16 - 1:23when I was a little kid they wanted me to go the hospital and see the doctor. Now they want me to go
-
1:23 - 1:28to a health maintenance organization or a wellness center, to consult a health care delivery provider...
-
1:28 - 1:31poor people used to live in slums, now the economically disadvantaged, occupy
-
1:31 - 1:39substandard housing in the inner city. And they're broke. They're broke! They don't have a
-
1:39 - 1:46negative cash flow position, they're fuckin' broke! Cause a lot of them were fired
-
1:46 - 1:51you know, fired? Management wanted to curtail redundancies in the human resources area...so many people are
-
1:51 - 1:56no longer viable members of the work force...
-
1:56 - 2:00smug, greedy, well fed white people have invented
-
2:00 - 2:03a language to conceal their sins. It's as simple as that.
-
2:03 - 2:07the CIA doesn't kill anyone anymore, they neutralize people.
-
2:07 - 2:09Or, they depopulate the area. The government
-
2:09 - 2:12doesn't lie, it engages in misinformation. The Pentagon actually measures
-
2:18 - 2:22nuclear radiation in something they call sunshine units!
-
2:22 - 2:24Iseali murderers are called commandos.
-
2:24 - 2:30contra killers are called freedom fighters. Well if crime fighters fight crime,
-
2:30 - 2:35and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight?
-
2:35 - 2:39They never mention that part of it to us, do they? Never mention that part....
-
2:39 - 2:49But some of this stuff is just silly. We all know that.
-
2:49 - 2:53Like, on the airlines, they say they want to 'pre board.' Well, what the hell is pre-board?
-
2:53 - 3:00What does that mean? To get on, before you get on?
-
3:00 - 3:04They say they're going to pre-board those passengers in need of special assistance.
-
3:04 - 3:06Cripples!
-
3:06 - 3:09Simple. Honest. Direct language!
-
3:09 - 3:13There's no shame attached to the word crippled that I can find in any dictionary.
-
3:13 - 3:18No shame. In fact it's a word used in Bible translations 'Jesus healed the crippled."
-
3:18 - 3:21It doesn't take seven words to describe that condistion
-
3:21 - 3:23But we don't have any cripples in this country any more!
-
3:23 - 3:25We have....
-
3:25 - 3:32The Physically Challenged. Is that s groteque enough evasion for you?
-
3:32 - 3:36Or, how about differently abled?! I've heard them called that.
-
3:36 - 3:41Differently abled. You can't even call theses people handicapped anymore, they'll say
-
3:41 - 3:42"We're not handicapped!
-
3:42 - 3:46We're handy capable!"
-
3:46 - 3:48These poor people have been bullshitted by the system into believing that if you change the
-
3:48 - 3:52name of the condition, that somehow you'll change the condition!
-
3:52 - 4:00Well, hey cuz...doesn't happen!
-
4:00 - 4:02We have no more deaf people in this country.
-
4:02 - 4:03"hearing impaired."
-
4:03 - 4:04We have no more blind people.
-
4:04 - 4:07Partially sighted, or visually impaired
-
4:07 - 4:09We have no more stupid people. Everybody just has a
-
4:09 - 4:12learning disorder!
-
4:12 - 4:18Or he's minimally exceptional. How would you like to be told that about your child?!
-
4:18 - 4:20"He's minimally exceptional."
-
4:20 - 4:23"Oh, thank God for that!"
-
4:23 - 4:27Psychologists have actually begun to call ugly people
-
4:27 - 4:33"those with severe appearance deficits."
-
4:33 - 4:48It's getting so bad that any day now I expect to hear a rape victim referred to as an unwilling sperm recipient..
-
4:49 - 4:52And we have no more old people in this country!
-
4:52 - 4:53No more old people. We ship them all away...
-
4:53 - 4:58and we brought in these...senior citizens...
-
4:58 - 5:01Isn't that a typically American 20th century phrase?
-
5:01 - 5:06Bloodless. Lifeless. No pulse in one of them...
-
5:06 - 5:09a senior citizen.
-
5:09 - 5:14But I've excepted that one. I've come to terms with it..it's here to stay. That's what they're gonna be called
-
5:14 - 5:20so I'll relax on that. But the one I do resist..that I keep resisting, is when they look at an old guy and the'll say
-
5:20 - 5:24"look at him Dan, he's 90 Years young."
-
5:24 - 5:27Imagine the fear of aging that reveals.
-
5:27 - 5:30to not even be able to use the word "old" to describe someone.
-
5:30 - 5:32To have to use an antonym.
-
5:32 - 5:34And fear of aging is natural, it's universal
-
5:34 - 5:39isn't it? We all have that. No one wants to get old. No one wants to die. But we do.
-
5:39 - 5:40So,
-
5:40 - 5:43We bullshit ourselves.
-
5:43 - 5:45I started bullshitting myself when I got to my fourties.
-
5:45 - 5:48Soon as I was in my 40s, I'd look in the mirror and I'd say
"well -
5:48 - 5:57I guess I'm getting older." Older sounds a little better than old, doesn't it!?
-
5:57 - 6:01Older sounds like it might even last a little longer. Bullshit!
-
6:01 - 6:03I'm getting old.
-
6:03 - 6:04And it's okay.
-
6:04 - 6:08Because thanks to our fear of death in this country, I won't have to die!
-
6:08 - 6:21I'll pass away.....
-
6:21 - 6:25Or i'll expire like a magazine subscription.
-
6:25 - 6:28if it happens in the hospital they'll call it a terminal episode.
-
6:28 - 6:34the insurance company will refer to it as negative patient care outcome
-
6:34 - 6:40and, if it's the result of malpractice they'll say it was a therapeutic misadventure.
-
6:40 - 6:41I'm telling ya....
-
6:41 - 6:42some of this language makes me want to vomit.
-
6:42 - 6:44Well, maybe not vomit.
-
6:44 - 6:50Makes me want to engage in an involuntary personal protein spill!
-
6:50 - 6:54Thank you all.
- Title:
- George Carlin on Soft Language
- Description:
-
George Carlin talks about soft language from the special Doin' It Again.
If not 'THE', certainly one of the best comedians ever.
RIP George
1937-2008(this cut out for a second during the upload somehow, so no this was not intentionally edited. This notation will probably not be read by many considering how most people don't take the time to read descriptions and welcome any opportunity to hear themselves spew 'verbal diarrhea')
