This Body Is Not Me | Thich Nhat Hanh (short teaching video)

  • 0:03 - 0:06
This is something we can remember,
    we can practice:
  • 0:07 - 0:10
if we sit close to a person who is dying,
  • 0:10 - 0:11
    you should talk to him,
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    you should talk to her,
  • 0:13 - 0:17
and touch the seed of happiness,
    in him or in her.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    You should be able
    to recognise these seeds
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    in the agonizing person
  • 0:26 - 0:29
and even if that person is in a coma,
  • 0:31 - 0:36
you should also talk to him or to her,
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    because there is a way
    by which that person can
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    communicate with us.
  • 0:48 - 0:54
There was a student in Bordeaux, France,
who learned that his mother is dying
  • 0:54 - 1:00
and he came to Plum Village
    to get some teachings,
  • 1:01 - 1:08
    some instructions,
in order to help his mother,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
and Sister Chân Không told him to do that,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
means to talk to his mother,
  • 1:15 - 1:18
and talk to her only about the beautiful,
  • 1:19 - 1:21
the happy things in her life,
  • 1:24 - 1:33
    and when he arrived
in California, where his mother was dying,
  • 1:35 - 1:37
his mother was in a coma.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
Doctors had tried to revive her,
to bring her back to consciousness,
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    but they failed,
  • 1:47 - 1:54
and the young student just practised
    according to the instructions.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
He sat and he just talked to his mother.
  • 2:01 - 2:07
    About forty-five minutes later
she came back, she woke up.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    Very amazing.
  • 2:09 - 2:10
The doctors could not believe it.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
You know the Fellowship of Reconciliation,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
when I first came to America,
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    and the chancellor
  • 2:23 - 2:28
    who was the general secretary
    of the Fellowship of Reconciliation,
  • 2:28 - 2:37
Peace and Reconciliation in New York,
  • 2:39 - 2:43
and he helped me to tour America
    in order to speak
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    about the situation in Vietnam.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    That was in 1966,
  • 2:53 - 3:00
and with the help of Alfred
    and the Fellowship of Reconciliation
  • 3:00 - 3:08
    we have organised peace activities
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    a little bit in Europe,
    everywhere in Europe,
  • 3:11 - 3:13
and in Asia and so on.
  • 3:17 - 3:27
And we have shared a lot of time together
    working for peace in Vietnam,
  • 3:29 - 3:38
and there were very joyful moments
    when we worked together
  • 3:39 - 3:40
to end the war in Vietnam.
  • 3:43 - 3:49
One day Sister Chân Không, myself,
    and a number of friends
  • 3:49 - 3:55
    were driving to,
    I think,
  • 3:56 - 4:00
Omega Institute in Upper New York City
    to give a retreat.
  • 4:00 - 4:06
We learned that Alfred was agonizing
    in a Catholic hospital
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    not very far from there,
  • 4:07 - 4:14
so we decided to go there and to see him.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
    When we arrived,
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    Dorothy, his wife,
and Laura, his daughter, were there,
  • 4:22 - 4:32
    and Alfred was being fed
    with glucose serums
  • 4:33 - 4:35
but he also was in a coma,
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    and Laura, his daughter,
  • 4:40 - 4:49
    who had volunteered to work
in our Peace Office in Paris,
  • 4:50 - 4:54
she was so glad to see
    myself and Sister Chân Không
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    coming to visit her father.
  • 4:56 - 5:00
She tried her best to wake up Alfred:
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    "Alfred, Alfred, Daddy,
  • 5:03 - 5:07
You know that Thay is here,
    Sister Chân Không is here,"
  • 5:08 - 5:11
but Alfred did not wake up.
  • 5:12 - 5:17
And then I told Sư Cô (Sister) Chân Không
    to sing for Alfred.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    The song I wrote,
  • 5:23 - 5:28
using the words of the Buddha
    in the Pali Cannon,
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    also in the Chinese Cannon,
    the same text,
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    "This body is not me.
  • 5:36 - 5:37
I'm not caught in this body,
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    I'm life without boundaries.
  • 5:41 - 5:48
My nature is no birth and no death.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
It went -- it goes on like that.
  • 5:53 - 5:56
And when Sư Cô (Sister) Chân Không
sang it for the third time,
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    Alfred woke up.
  • 6:00 - 6:04
    You see,
    there is a communication possible.
  • 6:09 - 6:13
We were very happy to see Alfred awake,
  • 6:13 - 6:23
and I was massaging his feet
to give him the feeling that he is there.
  • 6:23 - 6:24
    He was there.
  • 6:25 - 6:32
And Laura said "Alfred, you know that
Thay is here? Sister Chân Không is here?
  • 6:33 - 6:34
Alfred was not able to speak,
  • 6:34 - 6:39
but his eyes showed that he was aware,
  • 6:40 - 6:44
    that I was there,
that Sister Chân Không was there.
  • 6:45 - 6:48
    And then Sister Chân Không
    began to talk to him.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
We have learned what to talk about.
  • 6:52 - 6:56
    "Alfred, do you remember
the time we were in Rome."
  • 6:57 - 7:02
At that time 300 Buddhist monks
were in the prison of Vietnam
  • 7:02 - 7:06
because they refused to be drafted
    in to the army
  • 7:07 - 7:13
and in Rome we had been able to invite
    300 Catholic priests
  • 7:14 - 7:18
    to come for a vigil
    — a demonstration —
  • 7:18 - 7:29
and each Catholic priest wore the name
of a Buddhist monk in Vietnam.
  • 7:30 - 7:32
    "Do you remember that, Alfred?"
  • 7:32 - 7:36
And she continued to talk to him
    about happy souvenir
  • 7:37 - 7:42
    during the time
    working together for peace.
  • 7:43 - 7:44
    And you know what happened?
  • 7:46 - 7:50
    After about 10 minutes,
    Alfred opened his mouth
  • 7:51 - 7:56
    and said:
    "Wonderful, Wonderful" (two times).
  • 7:56 - 7:59
And after that, he sunk back
    in to the coma again.
  • 8:03 - 8:06
    It was late
and we had to give an orientation talk
  • 8:06 - 8:09
    at the Omega Institute
    in Upper New York.
  • 8:09 - 8:11
That is why we had to leave.
  • 8:11 - 8:15
    But we told Dorothy,
and Laura, to continue the practice.
  • 8:18 - 8:21
    And the next morning,
    very early,
  • 8:22 - 8:24
I got a telephone call from Laura
  • 8:24 - 8:30
and she reported that her father died
    very peacefully without any pain.
  • 8:34 - 8:41
    Śāriputra did the same thing
    while being with Anathapindika.
  • 8:42 - 8:48
He tried to water the good seeds,
the seeds of happiness, in Anathapindika
  • 8:49 - 8:52
    by practising the four recollections.
  • 8:55 - 9:00
    And after that,
    Anathapindika was able to smile.
  • 9:02 - 9:05
    They continued the guided meditation.
  • 9:07 - 9:14
    "Let us practice together,
the three of us" he said.
  • 9:17 - 9:19
    "Breathing in,
  • 9:25 - 9:28
I know that my eyes are not me,
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    my ears are not me.
  • 9:32 - 9:36
I am more than my eyes,
my ears, my nose, my tongue.
  • 9:37 - 9:40
Breathing in, I know this body is not me.
  • 9:43 - 9:44
I am not caught in this body.
  • 9:45 - 9:46
    I am life without boundaries.
  • 9:48 - 9:52
    The disintegration of this body
    is not my disintegration.
  • 9:53 - 9:57
My true nature is the nature of
    no birth and no death.
  • 10:02 - 10:03
    Breathing in,
  • 10:03 - 10:07
I'm aware of the element of heat in me:
    fire.
  • 10:09 - 10:13
The heat in me, the element of fire in me,
    is not me.
  • 10:15 - 10:18
I am more than the element 'fire'.
  • 10:19 - 10:23
    Breathing in,
I'm aware of the element 'water' in me.
  • 10:29 - 10:31
    I am not the water,
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    I'm more than the water.
  • 10:34 - 10:37
    I'm not caught
in the element 'water' in me.
  • 10:38 - 10:41
You know the four great elements,
    Mahābhūta.
  • 10:42 - 10:58
    Fire, earth, air, and water.
    Yes, four.
  • 11:00 - 11:02
    Breathing in,
  • 11:04 - 11:11
    I know,
the form that I see with eyes is not me.
  • 11:12 - 11:15
The sounds that I hear with my ears,
    are not me."
  • 11:16 - 11:21
    So the guided meditation
    helps the dying person
  • 11:22 - 11:26
not to identify with his sense events.
  • 11:30 - 11:31
    It's very important.
  • 11:32 - 11:36
This body hasn't come from nowhere.
  • 11:38 - 11:42
    When conditions are sufficient,
    this body manifests.
  • 11:43 - 11:47
It has not come from the north, the south,
    the east, the west.
  • 11:48 - 11:51
    Before the manifestation,
you cannot say "it did not exist."
  • 11:52 - 11:55
    After the manifestation,
you cannot say that it exists.
  • 11:57 - 12:00
    You know exactly
what we just heard in the dharma talk.
  • 12:00 - 12:05
    And by that time,
    Ānanda, the Venerable Ānanda,
  • 12:05 - 12:10
saw that tears began to roll down
    the eyes of Anathapindika.
  • 12:12 - 12:13
    He felt sorry
    for Anathapindika.
  • 12:13 - 12:16
    He asked:
"My dear friend, why are you crying?!
  • 12:18 - 12:20
    Do you regret anything?"
  • 12:26 - 12:30
    Anathapindika said "No, Venerable Ānanda,
    I don't regret anything."
  • 12:31 - 12:35
    "Or maybe you
    didn't succeed in your meditation?"
  • 12:35 - 12:41
    "No, Venerable Ānanda,
I succeeded very well in my meditation."
  • 12:41 - 12:43
    "Why are you crying then?"
  • 12:44 - 12:47
    "Venerable Ānanda,
I cry because I am so moved."
  • 12:48 - 12:54
"I have served the Buddha, The Sangha,
The Dharma, more than 30 years
  • 12:55 - 12:59
    and I have never received
    and put into practice
  • 12:59 - 13:03
    such a wonderful teaching,
like the one given to me today
  • 13:03 - 13:05
    by the Venerable Śāriputra."
  • 13:06 - 13:12
    "The teaching of no-birth, no-death,
    no-coming, no-going,"
  • 13:13 - 13:15
    "no-being, no-non-being."
  • 13:16 - 13:18
    Ānanda was still young.
  • 13:19 - 13:22
He said, "Dear friend, you don't know
    but this kind of teaching
  • 13:22 - 13:25
    we monks, monastics,
    receive almost every day."
  • 13:26 - 13:27
    (Laughter)
  • 13:30 - 13:34
    Anathapindika looked at the Venerables
    and said,
  • 13:35 - 13:40
    "Dear Venerable Ānanda,
    please, when you go home,
  • 13:40 - 13:47
please tell the Lord, that we lay people,
even if many of us are busy,
  • 13:47 - 13:52
    not capable of receiving
    such wonderful teaching."
  • 13:53 - 14:02
"But there are those of us, as lay people,
who are free enough, who have enough time,
  • 14:05 - 14:09
    to receive this teaching
and to put in to our practice."
  • 14:10 - 14:12
    "So please tell the Buddha
    -- request him --
  • 14:12 - 14:16
to dispense this kind of teaching
to us lay people as well."
  • 14:18 - 14:22
And that was the last request
    made by Anathapindika.
  • 14:23 - 14:27
Ānanda accepted to do the condition,
  • 14:29 - 14:33
    and after that,
    Anathapindika died peacefully.
  • 14:35 - 14:39
If you would like to read the story again,
it is in the Plum Village Chanting Book,
  • 14:40 - 14:42
    and if you are assisting...
  • 14:42 - 14:47
    if you are social workers,
    or doctors, or psychotherapists,
  • 14:49 - 14:55
    who have the duty
    to accompany the dying people,
  • 14:55 - 14:58
    I think it's very rare,
    helpful, and wonderful
  • 14:58 - 15:01
to study and to practice this teaching.
  • 15:02 - 15:04
    If you have non-fear,
  • 15:04 - 15:08
if you have touched the nature of
    no-birth and no-death in you
  • 15:08 - 15:11
you'll be a very precious element,
  • 15:12 - 15:15
    conditioned for that person
    to die in peace.
  • 15:16 - 15:19
    You will be inspiring,
very inspiring, to him or to her.
  • 15:20 - 15:24
    Your presence,
    like the presence of Śāriputra,
  • 15:24 - 15:27
    who helped the dying person
    to die peacefully, without fear.
  • 15:30 - 15:33
I like to ask Sister Chân Không
to come and sing the song:
  • 15:35 - 15:36
    "This Body is Not Me".
  • 15:36 - 15:39
    I don't know whether
    she still remembers the song.
  • 15:39 - 15:42
    (Laughter)
  • 15:47 - 15:48
    (Singing)
  • 15:48 - 15:51
    This body is not me
  • 15:52 - 15:57
I am not caught in this body
  • 15:57 - 16:01
    I am life without boundaries.
  • 16:02 - 16:05
    I have never been born,
  • 16:06 - 16:10
    and I will never die.
  • 16:10 - 16:17
Look at the ocean, and the sky,
    filled with stars,
  • 16:17 - 16:23
    manifestations of my wondrous mind.
  • 16:24 - 16:32
    Since immemorial time,
    I have been dreaming.
  • 16:33 - 16:40
Birth and death are only doors,
    by which I pass by,
  • 16:40 - 16:45
    sacred treasure on my journey.
  • 16:46 - 16:52
    Birth and death:
    a hide-and-seeking game.
  • 16:53 - 16:56
    So smile to me,
    take my hand,
  • 16:56 - 16:59
    let us say goodbye,
  • 16:59 - 17:03
say goodbye 'till we meet again.
  • 17:05 - 17:06
    We meet today.
  • 17:07 - 17:09
    We shall meet tomorrow.
  • 17:10 - 17:16
We are meeting in all walks of life.
  • 17:17 - 17:21
    This body is not me.
  • 17:22 - 17:27
I am not caught in this body.
  • 17:28 - 17:32
    I am life without boundary.
  • 17:32 - 17:40
    I have never been born,
    and I will never die.
  • 17:41 - 17:47
Birth and death are only doors,
    by which I pass by,
  • 17:47 - 17:52
    sacred treasure on my journey.
  • 17:53 - 17:59
    Birth and death,
    a hide-and-seeking game.
  • 17:59 - 18:05
So smile to me, hold my hand,
    let us say goodbye.
  • 18:05 - 18:10
Say goodbye, 'till we meet again.
  • 18:11 - 18:13
    We meet today.
  • 18:13 - 18:16
    We shall meet tomorrow.
  • 18:16 - 18:23
We are meeting in all walks of life.
  • 18:23 - 18:27
    This body is not me.
  • 18:28 - 18:33
I am not caught in this body.
  • 18:33 - 18:37
    I am life without boundaries.
  • 18:38 - 18:47
    I have never been born,
    and I will never die.
