Example using algebra to find measure of supplementary angles

  • 0:01 - 0:05
    We're told that the measure
    of angle QPR-- so that's
  • 0:05 - 0:09
    this angle right over
    here-- is 2x plus 122.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    And I'll assume that
    these are in degrees.
  • 0:11 - 0:16
    So it's 2x plus 122 degrees.
  • 0:16 - 0:21
    And the measure of
    angle RPS-- so that's
  • 0:21 - 0:27
    this angle right over here--
    is 2x plus 22 degrees.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
And they ask us to find
    the measure of angle RPS.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
So we need to figure out
    this right over here.
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    So we would be able
    to figure that out
  • 0:34 - 0:36
if we just knew what x is.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    And lucky for us, we
    can use the information
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    given to solve for
    x and then figure
  • 0:40 - 0:43
out what 2 times x plus 22 is.
  • 0:43 - 0:46
And the main big idea here,
the thing that pops out here,
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    is that the outside rays
    for both of these angle
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    form a line.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
These two angles form a line.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    You could say that
    they are supplementary.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    Both of these angles
    are supplementary.
  • 0:57 - 1:02
    2x plus 22 plus another 2x plus
122 is going to add up to 180.
  • 1:02 - 1:08
We know that this entire angle
right over here is 180 degrees.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
So we can say that the measure
    of angle QPR, this angle
  • 1:11 - 1:17
    right over here, 2x plus
    122, plus the green angle,
  • 1:17 - 1:23
    plus angle RPS-- so
    plus 2x plus 22-- is
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    going to be equal
    to 180 degrees.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
    And now we can start
    simplifying this.
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    We have two x's.
  • 1:33 - 1:34
    We have another two x's.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    So those are going
to add up to be 4x.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
And then we have 122 plus 22.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
So that's going to be 144.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    And the sum of
    those two are going
  • 1:46 - 1:48
to be equal to 180 degrees.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    We can subtract 144
    from both sides.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    On the left-hand
    side, we're just
  • 1:56 - 2:00
going to be left with a
    4x, this 4x right here.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    And on the right-hand
    side, we're
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    going to have-- let's see,
    if we were subtracting 140,
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    we would have 40 left.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    And then we have to
    subtract another 4,
  • 2:08 - 2:09
so it's going to be 36.
  • 2:09 - 2:17
    Divide both sides by 4,
and we get x is equal to 9.
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    Now remember,
    we're not done yet.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
They didn't say solve for x.
  • 2:20 - 2:24
They said find the measure of
angle RPS, which is 2 times
  • 2:24 - 2:29
    x plus 22 or 2 times
    9 plus 22, which
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    is 18 plus 22, which
    is equal to 40.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
    So the measure of angle
    RPS is 40 degrees.
