    Pancha Bhuta Aradhana which happens on Shivaratri

    and the Bhuta Shuddhi process

    which we learn as a part of Hata Yoga?

    Sadhguru: The five elements,

    just five,

    if they have to play so much mischief
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    its not one or two manifestations,
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    trillions of manifestations

    if all this has to happen,

    if it does not acquire
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    other qualities or possibilities,
  • 1:04 - 1:08
    there is no way with five you can create so many.

    They are naturally receptive in nature.

    The air that you breathe,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    the food that you eat,
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    the water that you drink
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    we will leave the other two
  • 1:25 - 1:30
    because you dont have much experience of those two.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    Today, we know
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    we can influence them
  • 1:35 - 1:40
    just with thought, emotion, intension or energy
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    we can change the quality of the water,
  • 1:43 - 1:47
    we can change the quality of the air and the food that we eat,
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    just with our intention or emotion or thought process.
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    So
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    the five elements within you
  • 1:58 - 2:05
    which makes this body are deeply, deeply influenced
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    a certain layer of information,
  • 2:07 - 2:12
    which generally referred to as the Karmic substance gathers;
  • 2:12 - 2:18
    without it the elements would not behave in a particular way within you.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    It would be same
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    every human being would have been same
  • 2:22 - 2:28
    if there was no specific information.
  • 2:28 - 2:33
    see, if you eat a banana you become a woman
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    the banana becomes a woman.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    Somebody here eats, it becomes a man,
  • 2:38 - 2:42
    if a cow eats it becomes a cow - same banana.
  • 2:42 - 2:51
    Banana is not so intelligent to make itself into a man, woman, cow, whichever animal consumes.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    It is a certain amount of information within you,
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    which transforms a banana into
  • 2:56 - 3:03
    a woman or a man or a cow or an elephant or whatever for that matter.
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    What you call as myself,
  • 3:06 - 3:13
    individual self is essentially a certain volume of information
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    and the fundamental way that it is stuck on to you
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    is through the elements
  • 3:19 - 3:24
    because there is nothing here apart from the elements.
  • 3:24 - 3:28
    So, cleansing it is also about cleansing it
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    and making it free of the accumulated information
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    or the karmic substance.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    If this is not done
  • 3:39 - 3:44
    then you will be a strong individual
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    but you will never know
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    how to breach this boundary that you have set for yourself.
  • 3:50 - 3:54
    This is not some boundary set by the existence;
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    this is a boundary that youve set for yourself.
  • 3:57 - 4:01
    If you cannot cross the boundary that you set up,
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    thats a foolish way to live, isnt it?
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    You set up a boundary without knowing why
  • 4:09 - 4:13
    and you cant cross it after sometime
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    and you start claiming
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    This is how I am!
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    This is you know this is a common statement you hear everywhere,
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    you ask them to cross some limitation
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    No! This is how I am.
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    This is not how you are
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    this is what you made yourself to be.
  • 4:31 - 4:34
    Now, cleansing becomes relevant
  • 4:34 - 4:38
    when you want to extend yourself beyond these boundaries
  • 4:38 - 4:42
    when freedom and liberation becomes the goal of your life.
  • 4:42 - 4:47
    If you want to be a concrete ball
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    there is no need to cleanse,
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    theres no need to cleanse at all.
  • 4:53 - 5:01
    So concretization of karmic processes will make you rigid.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    Rigidity will bring enormous amount of suffering,
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    enormous.
  • 5:06 - 5:09
    You dont need a calamity to happen;
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    you are a calamity by yourself.
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    You do not need any external assistance,
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    this is called self-help.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    Most people
  • 5:19 - 5:21
    when it comes to their suffering
  • 5:21 - 5:22
    they are all on self-help.
  • 5:22 - 5:23
    You know
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    Nobody need to poke them.
  • 5:31 - 5:35
    When was it last time that somebody physically poked you?
  • 5:35 - 5:37
    Hmm?
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    When was it last time?
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    Maybe when you were in school
  • 5:41 - 5:43
    somebody did this to you.
  • 5:43 - 5:46
    After that nobody is bothered about doing anything like that.
  • 5:49 - 5:52
    Most of you, almost all of you have never
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    been poked with a dagger or a sword
  • 5:54 - 5:58
    at the most a pin or a finger
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    nothing more.
  • 5:59 - 6:04
    But for most of you in the last ten, fifteen or twenty-five years
  • 6:04 - 6:07
    nobody has ever even poked you with a finger
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    because everybody is weary of you.
  • 6:10 - 6:11
    Whos
  • 6:15 - 6:16
    So how much
  • 6:16 - 6:20
    if you look at the volume of suffering that you go through -
  • 6:20 - 6:26
    anger, fear, hatred, jealousy, whatever else you go through,
  • 6:26 - 6:27
    misery whatever-
  • 6:27 - 6:32
    how much has been caused from external agencies,
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    how much is caused by you
  • 6:34 - 6:36
    if you look at it,
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    it is a miniscule percentage
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    which has been caused from external agencies.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
    No, no, no my mother-in-law said this,
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    my boss said that -
  • 6:43 - 6:45
    they are saying what theyre saying
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    but they are not poking you.
  • 6:47 - 6:53
    Physical suffering has not been caused to you from outside unless youre from Middle-East
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    For most of you such things have not happened
  • 7:02 - 7:05
    but rest is all your own making.
  • 7:05 - 7:08
    This is simply because
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    the imprint is so deep
  • 7:10 - 7:17
    that you behave in predetermined compulsive ways.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    A thousand times the same situation has happened
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    but still the next time it happens
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    you almost react the same way -
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    it takes a certain amount of awareness,
  • 7:29 - 7:34
    certain amounts of shaking you up to respond in a different way.
  • 7:34 - 7:38
    So, whats called Bhuta Shuddhi is
  • 7:38 - 7:42
    to do it in the most fundamental level.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
    If we cleanse your mind
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    if we clean it in the morning,
  • 7:48 - 7:52
    by afternoon you will have a whole new world again
  • 7:54 - 7:55
    Its really waste.
  • 7:55 - 7:58
    This is why
  • 7:58 - 8:03
    no no significance or no importance is given in the yogic system
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    towards your psychological structure
  • 8:05 - 8:07
    what you think, what you feel they dont care
  • 8:07 - 8:10
    because if you change it today again
  • 8:10 - 8:15
    within few hours you will change it back into something else.
  • 8:15 - 8:18
    We are only interested in the body;
  • 8:18 - 8:22
    this is why yoga calls everything as body
  • 8:22 - 8:25
    physical body, mental body, energy body like this
  • 8:25 - 8:27
    but no mind
  • 8:27 - 8:30
    because the psychological activity thats happening
  • 8:30 - 8:33
    towards which you have given enormous importance
  • 8:33 - 8:36
    is of no consequence or significance.
  • 8:36 - 8:40
    Depending upon the type of information imprinted within you.
  • 8:40 - 8:41
    Whatever is your karma,
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    whatever is your sanskara,
  • 8:43 - 8:44
    that is how you think,
  • 8:44 - 8:45
    thats how you feel,
  • 8:45 - 8:47
    thats how your emotions happen,
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    everything happens that way.
  • 8:49 - 8:52
    So we are interested in handling the root.
  • 8:52 - 8:53
    If you prune the tree
  • 8:53 - 8:56
    it will sprout back with vengeance
  • 8:56 - 8:57
    no point
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    pruning it.
  • 8:58 - 9:02
    If you handle the root itll be gone.
  • 9:02 - 9:07
    So the very root of karmic imprint is in the elements,
  • 9:07 - 9:10
    that is the most fundamental space.
  • 9:10 - 9:14
    It takes much more than handling other aspects.
  • 9:14 - 9:20
    So, generally because most people are not interested in absolute transformation.
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    They just want a little change,
  • 9:22 - 9:24
    they dont want to lose themselves.
  • 9:24 - 9:29
    Bhuta Shuddhi means you want to lose yourself
  • 9:29 - 9:32
    whether its good, bad, ugly, beautiful, it doesnt matter
  • 9:32 - 9:36
    you want to lose everything that you have built,
  • 9:36 - 9:42
    so that the Creators creation will stand up and shine within you.
  • 9:42 - 9:46
    Itll take a certain amount of work
  • 9:46 - 9:50
    the Bhuta Shuddhi thats been taught to you is very basic.
  • 9:50 - 9:55
    If you want to do more serious forms of Bhuta Shuddhi
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    it will mean
  • 9:57 - 9:59
    it becomes your entire life,
  • 9:59 - 10:03
    its not something that you do on the side.
  • 10:03 - 10:09
    So even if you do a very minor version of Bhuta Shuddhi,
  • 10:09 - 10:11
    you will see
  • 10:11 - 10:13
    the change that happens in you is permanent
  • 10:13 - 10:15
    there is no tendency to fall back
  • 10:15 - 10:18
    and thats important.
  • 10:18 - 10:20
    Otherwise everybody changes for three days
  • 10:20 - 10:22
    and again they fall back into the rut.
  • 10:22 - 10:24
    After sometime that will not happen
  • 10:24 - 10:30
    when you assist whatever else youre doing with the Bhuta Shuddhi practice.
  • 10:30 - 10:35
    Nadha Aradhana I mean the Pancha Bhuta Aradhana is another matter,
  • 10:35 - 10:37
    thats a ritual.
  • 10:37 - 10:39
    For those who are not willing to do sadhana
  • 10:39 - 10:42
    just to give them some benefit,
  • 10:42 - 10:44
    thats the beauty of a ritual,
  • 10:44 - 10:46
    thats a limitation of a ritual.
  • 10:46 - 10:49
    Somebody else can conduct a ritual for you
  • 10:49 - 10:53
    you dont have to do any sadhana, just sit there and benefit from that
  • 10:53 - 10:55
    but then only if they conduct, you have it
  • 10:55 - 10:57
    otherwise you dont have it.
  • 10:57 - 11:02
    Suppose we dont do Pancha Bhuta Aradhana, you dont have it.
  • 11:02 - 11:06
    So, the ritual is always like this,
  • 11:06 - 11:08
    it is beautiful because
  • 11:08 - 11:11
    people who do not know anything about it
  • 11:11 - 11:13
    they can still benefit from it.
  • 11:13 - 11:16
    At the same time if those who conduct,
  • 11:16 - 11:18
    do not conduct it properly
  • 11:18 - 11:20
    it will not happen to you.
  • 11:20 - 11:22
    If they do not conduct it at all,
  • 11:22 - 11:25
    it will never be available to you.
  • 11:25 - 11:29
    But if you do Bhuta Shuddhi practice by yourself
  • 11:29 - 11:31
    if youre willing you can keep it up
  • 11:31 - 11:34
    and you will see as time progresses
  • 11:34 - 11:39
    its impact is undeniable.
  • 11:39 - 11:40
    Above all,
  • 11:40 - 11:41
    whatever it does,
  • 11:41 - 11:42
    however small the practice is,
  • 11:42 - 11:46
    whatever it does, there is no turning back.
  • 11:46 - 11:49
    Thats a very aspect of Bhuta Shuddhi.

    If you
  • 11:52 - 11:53
    if you
  • 11:53 - 11:56
    lets say six months you do asana,
  • 11:56 - 11:59
    another one year you give it up,
  • 11:59 - 12:00
    everything will back
  • 12:00 - 12:02
    will be back as it was.

    Six months you did pranayam
  • 12:04 - 12:08
    if its a powerful process like Shakti Chalana Kriya, if you did,
  • 12:10 - 12:12
    its impact will be there
  • 12:12 - 12:14
    but of at a certain period of time
  • 12:14 - 12:16
    if you dont do it for a certain period of time,
  • 12:16 - 12:18
    again itll turn back.
  • 12:18 - 12:23
    You meditate, you do Shoonya meditation for some time -
  • 12:23 - 12:25
    if you dont do it for a certain period of time
  • 12:25 - 12:28
    slowly itll turn back.
  • 12:29 - 12:32
    But that is not the nature of Bhuta Shuddhi.
  • 12:32 - 12:33
    Bhuta Shuddhi if you do
  • 12:33 - 12:35
    nothing seems to be happening
  • 12:35 - 12:39
    because its very fundamental and its slow
  • 12:39 - 12:45
    but whatever happens, it will not turn back.
  • 12:45 - 12:46
    It stays with you,
  • 12:46 - 12:49
    as long as you hold this body it stays with you
  • 12:49 - 12:50
    it will not go
  • 12:50 - 12:53
    because its on a very fundamental level.
  • 12:53 - 12:55
    Thats the significance of Bhuta Shuddhi.
