Bhuta Shuddhi – Getting to the Root of Karma

0:09 - 0:12I have a question about Bhuta Shuddhi.

0:12 - 0:17We speak about cleansing of the five elements.

0:17 - 0:19Cleansing them of what,
-
0:19 - 0:21why do they become impure
-
0:21 - 0:23and what is the difference between
-
0:23 - 0:26Pancha Bhuta Aradhana which happens on Shivaratri
-
0:26 - 0:29and the Bhuta Shuddhi process
-
0:29 - 0:31which we learn as a part of Hata Yoga?
-
0:32 - 0:34Sadhguru: The five elements,
-
0:37 - 0:38just five,
-
0:40 - 0:43if they have to play so much mischief
-
0:46 - 0:49its not one or two manifestations,
-
0:49 - 0:51trillions of manifestations
-
0:54 - 0:55if all this has to happen,
-
0:58 - 1:01if it does not acquire
-
1:01 - 1:04other qualities or possibilities,
-
1:04 - 1:08there is no way with five you can create so many.
-
1:10 - 1:13They are naturally receptive in nature.
-
1:16 - 1:18The air that you breathe,
-
1:18 - 1:20the food that you eat,
-
1:20 - 1:24the water that you drink
-
1:24 - 1:25we will leave the other two
-
1:25 - 1:30because you dont have much experience of those two.
-
1:30 - 1:33Today, we know
-
1:33 - 1:35we can influence them
-
1:35 - 1:40just with thought, emotion, intension or energy
-
1:40 - 1:43we can change the quality of the water,
-
1:43 - 1:47we can change the quality of the air and the food that we eat,
-
1:47 - 1:51just with our intention or emotion or thought process.
-
1:53 - 1:54So
-
1:56 - 1:58the five elements within you
-
1:58 - 2:05which makes this body are deeply, deeply influenced
-
2:05 - 2:07a certain layer of information,
-
2:07 - 2:12which generally referred to as the Karmic substance gathers;
-
2:12 - 2:18without it the elements would not behave in a particular way within you.
-
2:18 - 2:20It would be same
-
2:20 - 2:22every human being would have been same
-
2:22 - 2:28if there was no specific information.
-
2:28 - 2:33see, if you eat a banana you become a woman
-
2:33 - 2:36the banana becomes a woman.
-
2:36 - 2:38Somebody here eats, it becomes a man,
-
2:38 - 2:42if a cow eats it becomes a cow - same banana.
-
2:42 - 2:51Banana is not so intelligent to make itself into a man, woman, cow, whichever animal consumes.
-
2:51 - 2:54It is a certain amount of information within you,
-
2:54 - 2:56which transforms a banana into
-
2:56 - 3:03a woman or a man or a cow or an elephant or whatever for that matter.
-
3:03 - 3:06What you call as myself,
-
3:06 - 3:13individual self is essentially a certain volume of information
-
3:13 - 3:17and the fundamental way that it is stuck on to you
-
3:17 - 3:19is through the elements
-
3:19 - 3:24because there is nothing here apart from the elements.
-
3:24 - 3:28So, cleansing it is also about cleansing it
-
3:28 - 3:32and making it free of the accumulated information
-
3:32 - 3:35or the karmic substance.
-
3:35 - 3:37If this is not done
-
3:39 - 3:44then you will be a strong individual
-
3:44 - 3:46but you will never know
-
3:46 - 3:50how to breach this boundary that you have set for yourself.
-
3:50 - 3:54This is not some boundary set by the existence;
-
3:54 - 3:57this is a boundary that youve set for yourself.
-
3:57 - 4:01If you cannot cross the boundary that you set up,
-
4:01 - 4:04thats a foolish way to live, isnt it?
-
4:06 - 4:09You set up a boundary without knowing why
-
4:09 - 4:13and you cant cross it after sometime
-
4:13 - 4:14and you start claiming
-
4:14 - 4:16This is how I am!
-
4:18 - 4:21This is you know this is a common statement you hear everywhere,
-
4:21 - 4:23you ask them to cross some limitation
-
4:23 - 4:25No! This is how I am.
-
4:26 - 4:28This is not how you are
-
4:28 - 4:31this is what you made yourself to be.
-
4:31 - 4:34Now, cleansing becomes relevant
-
4:34 - 4:38when you want to extend yourself beyond these boundaries
-
4:38 - 4:42when freedom and liberation becomes the goal of your life.
-
4:42 - 4:47If you want to be a concrete ball
-
4:47 - 4:50there is no need to cleanse,
-
4:50 - 4:53theres no need to cleanse at all.
-
4:53 - 5:01So concretization of karmic processes will make you rigid.
-
5:01 - 5:04Rigidity will bring enormous amount of suffering,
-
5:04 - 5:06enormous.
-
5:06 - 5:09You dont need a calamity to happen;
-
5:09 - 5:11you are a calamity by yourself.
-
5:11 - 5:14You do not need any external assistance,
-
5:14 - 5:16this is called self-help.
-
5:17 - 5:19Most people
-
5:19 - 5:21when it comes to their suffering
-
5:21 - 5:22they are all on self-help.
-
5:22 - 5:23You know
-
5:26 - 5:28Nobody need to poke them.
-
5:31 - 5:35When was it last time that somebody physically poked you?
-
5:35 - 5:37Hmm?
-
5:37 - 5:39When was it last time?
-
5:39 - 5:41Maybe when you were in school
-
5:41 - 5:43somebody did this to you.
-
5:43 - 5:46After that nobody is bothered about doing anything like that.
-
5:49 - 5:52Most of you, almost all of you have never
-
5:52 - 5:54been poked with a dagger or a sword
-
5:54 - 5:58at the most a pin or a finger
-
5:58 - 5:59nothing more.
-
5:59 - 6:04But for most of you in the last ten, fifteen or twenty-five years
-
6:04 - 6:07nobody has ever even poked you with a finger
-
6:07 - 6:10because everybody is weary of you.
-
6:10 - 6:11Whos
-
6:15 - 6:16So how much
-
6:16 - 6:20if you look at the volume of suffering that you go through -
-
6:20 - 6:26anger, fear, hatred, jealousy, whatever else you go through,
-
6:26 - 6:27misery whatever-
-
6:27 - 6:32how much has been caused from external agencies,
-
6:32 - 6:34how much is caused by you
-
6:34 - 6:36if you look at it,
-
6:36 - 6:38it is a miniscule percentage
-
6:38 - 6:40which has been caused from external agencies.
-
6:40 - 6:42No, no, no my mother-in-law said this,
-
6:42 - 6:43my boss said that -
-
6:43 - 6:45they are saying what theyre saying
-
6:45 - 6:47but they are not poking you.
-
6:47 - 6:53Physical suffering has not been caused to you from outside unless youre from Middle-East
-
6:59 - 7:02For most of you such things have not happened
-
7:02 - 7:05but rest is all your own making.
-
7:05 - 7:08This is simply because
-
7:08 - 7:10the imprint is so deep
-
7:10 - 7:17that you behave in predetermined compulsive ways.
-
7:19 - 7:22A thousand times the same situation has happened
-
7:22 - 7:24but still the next time it happens
-
7:24 - 7:27you almost react the same way -
-
7:27 - 7:29it takes a certain amount of awareness,
-
7:29 - 7:34certain amounts of shaking you up to respond in a different way.
-
7:34 - 7:38So, whats called Bhuta Shuddhi is
-
7:38 - 7:42to do it in the most fundamental level.
-
7:43 - 7:46If we cleanse your mind
-
7:46 - 7:48if we clean it in the morning,
-
7:48 - 7:52by afternoon you will have a whole new world again
-
7:54 - 7:55Its really waste.
-
7:55 - 7:58This is why
-
7:58 - 8:03no no significance or no importance is given in the yogic system
-
8:03 - 8:05towards your psychological structure
-
8:05 - 8:07what you think, what you feel they dont care
-
8:07 - 8:10because if you change it today again
-
8:10 - 8:15within few hours you will change it back into something else.
-
8:15 - 8:18We are only interested in the body;
-
8:18 - 8:22this is why yoga calls everything as body
-
8:22 - 8:25physical body, mental body, energy body like this
-
8:25 - 8:27but no mind
-
8:27 - 8:30because the psychological activity thats happening
-
8:30 - 8:33towards which you have given enormous importance
-
8:33 - 8:36is of no consequence or significance.
-
8:36 - 8:40Depending upon the type of information imprinted within you.
-
8:40 - 8:41Whatever is your karma,
-
8:41 - 8:43whatever is your sanskara,
-
8:43 - 8:44that is how you think,
-
8:44 - 8:45thats how you feel,
-
8:45 - 8:47thats how your emotions happen,
-
8:47 - 8:49everything happens that way.
-
8:49 - 8:52So we are interested in handling the root.
-
8:52 - 8:53If you prune the tree
-
8:53 - 8:56it will sprout back with vengeance
-
8:56 - 8:57no point
-
8:57 - 8:58pruning it.
-
8:58 - 9:02If you handle the root itll be gone.
-
9:02 - 9:07So the very root of karmic imprint is in the elements,
-
9:07 - 9:10that is the most fundamental space.
-
9:10 - 9:14It takes much more than handling other aspects.
-
9:14 - 9:20So, generally because most people are not interested in absolute transformation.
-
9:20 - 9:22They just want a little change,
-
9:22 - 9:24they dont want to lose themselves.
-
9:24 - 9:29Bhuta Shuddhi means you want to lose yourself
-
9:29 - 9:32whether its good, bad, ugly, beautiful, it doesnt matter
-
9:32 - 9:36you want to lose everything that you have built,
-
9:36 - 9:42so that the Creators creation will stand up and shine within you.
-
9:42 - 9:46Itll take a certain amount of work
-
9:46 - 9:50the Bhuta Shuddhi thats been taught to you is very basic.
-
9:50 - 9:55If you want to do more serious forms of Bhuta Shuddhi
-
9:55 - 9:57it will mean
-
9:57 - 9:59it becomes your entire life,
-
9:59 - 10:03its not something that you do on the side.
-
10:03 - 10:09So even if you do a very minor version of Bhuta Shuddhi,
-
10:09 - 10:11you will see
-
10:11 - 10:13the change that happens in you is permanent
-
10:13 - 10:15there is no tendency to fall back
-
10:15 - 10:18and thats important.
-
10:18 - 10:20Otherwise everybody changes for three days
-
10:20 - 10:22and again they fall back into the rut.
-
10:22 - 10:24After sometime that will not happen
-
10:24 - 10:30when you assist whatever else youre doing with the Bhuta Shuddhi practice.
-
10:30 - 10:35Nadha Aradhana I mean the Pancha Bhuta Aradhana is another matter,
-
10:35 - 10:37thats a ritual.
-
10:37 - 10:39For those who are not willing to do sadhana
-
10:39 - 10:42just to give them some benefit,
-
10:42 - 10:44thats the beauty of a ritual,
-
10:44 - 10:46thats a limitation of a ritual.
-
10:46 - 10:49Somebody else can conduct a ritual for you
-
10:49 - 10:53you dont have to do any sadhana, just sit there and benefit from that
-
10:53 - 10:55but then only if they conduct, you have it
-
10:55 - 10:57otherwise you dont have it.
-
10:57 - 11:02Suppose we dont do Pancha Bhuta Aradhana, you dont have it.
-
11:02 - 11:06So, the ritual is always like this,
-
11:06 - 11:08it is beautiful because
-
11:08 - 11:11people who do not know anything about it
-
11:11 - 11:13they can still benefit from it.
-
11:13 - 11:16At the same time if those who conduct,
-
11:16 - 11:18do not conduct it properly
-
11:18 - 11:20it will not happen to you.
-
11:20 - 11:22If they do not conduct it at all,
-
11:22 - 11:25it will never be available to you.
-
11:25 - 11:29But if you do Bhuta Shuddhi practice by yourself
-
11:29 - 11:31if youre willing you can keep it up
-
11:31 - 11:34and you will see as time progresses
-
11:34 - 11:39its impact is undeniable.
-
11:39 - 11:40Above all,
-
11:40 - 11:41whatever it does,
-
11:41 - 11:42however small the practice is,
-
11:42 - 11:46whatever it does, there is no turning back.
-
11:46 - 11:49Thats a very aspect of Bhuta Shuddhi.

11:49 - 11:51If you
-
11:52 - 11:53if you
-
11:53 - 11:56lets say six months you do asana,
-
11:56 - 11:59another one year you give it up,
-
11:59 - 12:00everything will back
-
12:00 - 12:02will be back as it was.

12:02 - 12:04Six months you did pranayam
-
12:04 - 12:08if its a powerful process like Shakti Chalana Kriya, if you did,
-
12:10 - 12:12its impact will be there
-
12:12 - 12:14but of at a certain period of time
-
12:14 - 12:16if you dont do it for a certain period of time,
-
12:16 - 12:18again itll turn back.
-
12:18 - 12:23You meditate, you do Shoonya meditation for some time -
-
12:23 - 12:25if you dont do it for a certain period of time
-
12:25 - 12:28slowly itll turn back.
-
12:29 - 12:32But that is not the nature of Bhuta Shuddhi.

12:32 - 12:33Bhuta Shuddhi if you do
-
12:33 - 12:35nothing seems to be happening
-
12:35 - 12:39because its very fundamental and its slow
-
12:39 - 12:45but whatever happens, it will not turn back.

12:45 - 12:46It stays with you,
-
12:46 - 12:49as long as you hold this body it stays with you
-
12:49 - 12:50it will not go
-
12:50 - 12:53because its on a very fundamental level.

12:53 - 12:55Thats the significance of Bhuta Shuddhi.
