Why we need you Veronica Mars
-
0:01 - 0:05A long time ago, we used to be friends but I-
-
0:05 - 0:10I love Veronica Mars! I think it's an absolutely brilliant show. It only had a short run of
-
0:10 - 0:14three seasons and only two of which were actually watchable.
-
0:14 - 0:18The third season has sort of been written off as a fluke, there was a lot of problems
-
0:18 - 0:20with it but I'll save that for another video.
-
0:20 - 0:26That said, you should go out immediately and BitTorrent, pirate, rent, buy whatever you
-
0:26 - 0:29have to do to watch Veronica Mars because it will totally be worth it.
-
0:29 - 0:34It's a show about a teenage detective. She actually learned the tricks of the trade from
-
0:34 - 0:39her father whose a private detective and she often solves mysteries at school.
-
0:39 - 0:43She even solves crimes that the local sheriff's department is unable to solve.
-
0:43 - 0:47The show is actually really funny, it's got great wit, great humour and I would actually
-
0:47 - 0:53compare it to Joss Whedon's writing in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and maybe even say
-
0:53 - 0:57it's a little bit better? Joss Whedon did a cameo during season two because
-
0:57 - 0:58he thought the show was so good.
-
0:58 - 1:01And so did Courtney from the Dandy Warhols and Kevin Smith.
-
1:01 - 1:05One of the things that immediately drew me into the show is how technologically savvy
-
1:05 - 1:09Veronica Mars is. It's a pretty rare representation to have young women shown
-
1:09 - 1:11as super knowledgeable about all sorts of different technologies.
-
1:11 - 1:16So you see her often using computers and having a really good understanding of how
-
1:16 - 1:21they work. She is also an excellent photographer, printers, scanners all that sort
-
1:21 - 1:27of stuff. She also has a lot of different spy gadgets, so she can take apart an ipod
-
1:27 - 1:30and put in a hidden camera that will take a photo every five seconds for example.
-
1:30 - 1:35Or track people through GPS or put recording devices in cars.
-
1:35 - 1:38There's also another teenage woman at Veronica's school named Mac whose
-
1:38 - 1:42also super tech savvy. Veronica met up with her because she needed some help with
-
1:42 - 1:46the computer systems at school and Mac knew everything about them.
-
1:46 - 1:51So throughout the television series she is constantly going to Mac asking her for help
-
1:51 - 1:56in how to break into wifi networks and how to create websites and how to hack into
-
1:56 - 2:00different things and they work together as a pair on various projects.
-
2:00 - 2:04Very little violence is used on the show to solve problems but it's not a world
-
2:04 - 2:06without violence. So it kind of comes in two forms on the show.
-
2:06 - 2:12The first is really awkward and clumsy. So you'll have two teenage boys beating each
-
2:12 - 2:15other up and throwing punches and kind of missing but it's not like they are trained
-
2:15 - 2:18in martial arts, it's just really awkward.
-
2:18 - 2:23The second way shows how horrific and egregious violence actually is.
-
2:23 - 2:26It makes your stomach kind of turn as you're watching the show.
-
2:26 - 2:31I think that these characteristics and representations of violence on Veronica Mars
-
2:31 - 2:38really helps to show us how violence is used on other shows to solve problems how easy it is to write
-
2:38 - 2:44violence as a solution as opposed to coming up with really creative ways to deal with
-
2:44 - 2:46different problems.
-
2:46 - 2:50"Well she's giving a statement at the Sheriff's department tomorrow. I'll drop by see
-
2:50 - 2:52if she's up for a chat." "Well I'll go with you."
-
2:52 - 2:57"Actually, despite popular opinion, you really can't beat the truth out someone."
-
2:57 - 3:02Instead of using violence Veronica gets really creative and clever with the way that she
-
3:02 - 3:06solves her cases. At the resolution of each show the viewer is left with this sense of
-
3:06 - 3:13poetic justice. An example of this poetic justice is, when Veronica gets back at her
-
3:13 - 3:18boyfriend, Troy who she finds out later on was sort of scamming her the whole time.
-
3:18 - 3:21"Troy what's with this girl calling me? You gave her my number?"
-
3:21 - 3:28"Whoa, whoa what girl?" "Some girl named Veronica" "You didn't tell her you'd be seeing
-
3:28 - 3:32me did you?" "She caught me off guard, what was I supposed--"
-
3:39 - 3:42"Sorry we didn't get a chance to say good bye, just wanted to wish you good luck
-
3:42 - 3:45at your new school and leave you something to remember me by.
-
3:45 - 3:49It took me awhile to figure out where you stashed the steroids but there was only one
-
3:49 - 3:53place you were alone right? In case you were wondering the former contents of the
-
3:53 - 3:57package are somewhere between my toilet and the pacific ocean.
-
3:57 - 3:59Say hi to Shauna for me, she sounds like a keeper." "Dammit"
-
3:59 - 4:04The show is of course not without it's faults. It has some problematic portrayals of
-
4:04 - 4:08racism and classism but it does actually acknowledge those things and talks
-
4:08 - 4:13about them throughout the show. This is in comparison to most mainstream television
-
4:13 - 4:17shows that don't really acknowledge that racism or classism exists.
-
4:17 - 4:23I think that even though it talks about it in a sort of problematic way,
-
4:23 - 4:29just having that on our television screens I think is a step towards making our TV
-
4:29 - 4:33programs more anti-racism, more anti-classist.
-
4:33 - 4:37When I first started watching the show we were introduced to the local Latino
-
4:37 - 4:41biker gang and I was really fearful that the writers were going to feed into the very
-
4:41 - 4:49racist stereotypes, which they kind of did, but the writers also took the main leader of
-
4:49 - 4:53the gang and sort of humanized him. Really showed a bit of his backstory, and made the
-
4:53 - 4:57audience sympathetic and created a very complex character.
-
4:57 - 5:03There are also other moments in the show where the writers gave us very subtle and
-
5:03 - 5:08interesting and also humourous ways of exposing racism that you don't
-
5:08 - 5:12often think about. And you almost never see that on TV.
-
5:12 - 5:16"We're going to have to start searching the lockers. Immediately."
-
5:16 - 5:21"You wanna save yourself some time start with hers. We all saw her lurking around."
-
5:21 - 5:25"Lurking? Uh, you mean standing while black?"
-
5:25 - 5:29Sexual violence is a reoccuring theme throughout all three season of the show.
-
5:29 - 5:35I think that for the most part the writers did a really, really terrible job of dealing with
-
5:35 - 5:40rape and abuse and because of that I'm going to dedicate a whole other videoblog to
-
5:40 - 5:46it because I think that really needs to be exposed just how important it is to deal with
-
5:46 - 5:49sexual violence in a healthy manner on television.
-
5:49 - 5:52Overall I really, really like the show I would highly recommend season one and two.
-
5:52 - 5:59I think that there's a lot of really great things about it as far as the complexity
-
5:59 - 6:02of characters, it's entertaining and witty, it's really fun to watch.
-
6:02 - 6:07Veronica's relationship with her father is totally worth watching because they are
-
6:07 - 6:12really funny but it's also this mutual love and respect they have for one another
-
6:12 - 6:17and there's a lot of really progressive values that the show offers and I think that
-
6:17 - 6:19that's fairly rare to see on TV.
-
6:19 - 6:25That said I'm going to leave you with this clip that I think is wonderfully subtle.
-
6:25 - 6:27"Wow, that's some cake."
-
6:27 - 6:28"Isn't it though?"
-
6:28 - 6:36"I love it. Ever notice how everything you make just tends to lean a little to the left?"
-
6:36 - 6:38"I do that on purpose."
- Title:
- Why we need you Veronica Mars
- Description:
-
Veronica Mars has got to be one of my favourite shows of all time. No seriously, it's funny, witty, smart, progressive. Women are technologically savvy, the privilege of white rich kids are exposed (well sort of...), and it generally has progressive commentary. Watch this video for the things I loved about the show and also the more problematic elements... and keep watching because I included some hilarious and entertaining clips from the show.
