Seven Ways with Spuds
-
0:06 - 0:08Organic Moments is a presentation
-
0:08 - 0:10of Alabama Master Gardeners and the
-
0:10 - 0:12Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
-
0:13 - 0:16This is seven ways to grow potatoes.
-
0:16 - 0:18in Alabama, in your garden.
-
0:18 - 0:21Each of these methods involves planting potatoes
-
0:21 - 0:24in growing medium at the bottom of a container.
-
0:24 - 0:28And then as the potatoes grow, you add more medium.
-
0:28 - 0:30So when the potato leaves are 5-6 inches above
-
0:30 - 0:33the leaf litter for this cage method,
-
0:33 - 0:35you cover up, you add more leaf litter
-
0:35 - 0:39until you only have one or two leaves showing,
-
0:39 - 0:41and then you continue until
-
0:41 - 0:43it's full, the potatoes are mature,
-
0:43 - 0:45and ready for harvest, which takes about three months.
-
0:45 - 0:47We have six other methods.
-
0:47 - 0:51This method involves putting shredded paper in the bottom.
-
0:51 - 0:52There are no holes in the bottom of this;
-
0:52 - 0:54we expect these potatoes to rot,
-
0:54 - 0:57so we're following the method; we're gonna give it a try.
-
0:57 - 1:01This one is your standard bucket; no bottom in it.
-
1:01 - 1:04Put your medium in, plant the potatoes, add it as they grow.
-
1:04 - 1:07You can stack these things four buckets high,
-
1:07 - 1:10and when the potatoes are ready, just take the buckets off
-
1:10 - 1:11and the potatoes fall on the ground.
-
1:11 - 1:15Next we have the straw method where you put your potatoes
-
1:15 - 1:17in the middle of a small pile of straw.
-
1:17 - 1:19When they start to grow, you continue to add straw.
-
1:19 - 1:22This pile will eventually get waist high or better
-
1:22 - 1:25and hopefully full of potatoes.
-
1:25 - 1:27This is a commercial bag; you can buy it for 15 dollars.
-
1:27 - 1:29It's our most expensive mechanism, but it's
-
1:29 - 1:32ideally suited for the small patio.
-
1:32 - 1:33You put your potatoes in the growing medium.
-
1:33 - 1:36As they grow you continue to add mulch or compost.
-
1:36 - 1:40You unfold this bag; it keeps your patio nice and neat,
-
1:40 - 1:43and it's easy to harvest at the end of the year.
-
1:43 - 1:45The cheap method - this is 12 cents -
-
1:45 - 1:47is your standard black garbage bag.
-
1:47 - 1:49Exactly the same method.
-
1:49 - 1:53And when you get done, just rip the garbage bag open
-
1:53 - 1:56and the potatoes fall on the ground and you harvest.
-
1:56 - 1:58And then last we have our standard.
-
1:58 - 2:00Make a little hill pile of growing potatoes.
-
2:00 - 2:03You can put four potatoes in one hill,
-
2:03 - 2:04make a little hole,
-
2:04 - 2:06put the potato in there; cover it up,
-
2:06 - 2:09and again continue to add mulch or compost as they grow.
-
2:09 - 2:12As the hill gets a little bigger, just full of potatoes,
-
2:12 - 2:14have a harvest in about three months.
-
2:14 - 2:15We're gonna be very interested to see which one of these
-
2:15 - 2:16works the best,
-
2:16 - 2:20and which provides the greatest yield.
