Determination in sports | Jean-Xavier Pelletier | TEDxAcademieSaintLouis

  • 0:09 - 0:12
    (Voiceover) Jean-Xavier Pelletier:
    I'm Jean-Xavier Pelletier,
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    and I'm 11 years old.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    I've been a student
    at the Saint-Louis Academy
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    since kindergarten.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    I've been playing hockey
    since the age of four,
  • 0:19 - 0:22
and I've been a hockey goalie
    since the age of seven.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
I'm here to share my passion
    for this sport with you.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
I'll tell you about my idol.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
And you'll see that the one thing
    we have in common
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    is our determination
    for our favorite sport: hockey.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
(On stage) J-XP: Today, I'm here
to show you that anything is possible.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
But you can't do it using magic tricks.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    In my experience,
    you must follow your dreams,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    be determined, work hard,
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    keep a supportive group
    of people around you
  • 0:54 - 0:57
and have someone who inspires you.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    Jonathan Marchessault
is a young player on a new team:
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    Golden Knights of Las Vegas.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    We are both determined
    about our favorite sport.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
When I started, most young players
    only wanted to score goals.
  • 1:12 - 1:16
But my goal was to be
the fastest back to the zone
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    to stop incoming play.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
At age seven, I had to make
    a choice: my position.
  • 1:23 - 1:27
And here is what I said
    to convince my parents,
  • 1:27 - 1:30
"Daddy, Mommy, I know what I want.
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    I'm old enough.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
I would rather defend the goal
than be the fastest back to the zone."
  • 1:35 - 1:39
My first two years weren't that easy.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
I found myself at top level, alone.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    I've been through many defeats.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    I was left to myself.
  • 1:47 - 1:48
    Let me elaborate:
  • 1:48 - 1:53
I saw that the people around me
had lost faith in me, in my abilities,
  • 1:53 - 1:56
and I wanted to prove them wrong.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
I also realized that my body
wasn't ready for the change either.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
So, I kept training at home,
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    I focused on myself,
  • 2:06 - 2:09
and with my determination, hard work,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
support from my teammates, my family,
  • 2:11 - 2:15
with their love, honesty and trust in me,
  • 2:15 - 2:17
I moved up to a higher level.
  • 2:17 - 2:21
At our school, we have a slogan
that depicts what I just said very well:
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    "I can go faster alone
but even further as a team."
  • 2:24 - 2:28
    Several people have told me
    that phrase describes me well.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
John inspires me to never give up.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
He told me he had never played
    high caliber minor hockey,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    had never been drafted,
  • 2:37 - 2:41
    but was invited in 2012-2013
    by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    Unfortunately, they didn't keep him.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    It's a pity they don't know
    what they're missing today.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    He got three boarding penalties
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    before being drafted
    by the Golden Knights.
  • 2:50 - 2:57
This year, he is one of the 20
    leading scorers in the league,
  • 2:57 - 3:00
alongside one of the best goalies,
    Marc-André Fleury.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    And last year, he scored
as many goals as Connor McDavid,
  • 3:04 - 3:07
currently one of the best players
    in the national leagues.
  • 3:07 - 3:13
He told me that family support
was and still is very important to him.
  • 3:14 - 3:20
    Don't forget, follow your dreams,
    be determined, work hard,
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    keep a supportive group
    of people around you
  • 3:22 - 3:24
and have someone who inspires you.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    Finally, I hope my experience
    has convinced you
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    that anything is possible.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    Now, it's your turn
    to believe in yourself.
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    Before I go,
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    watch this example
    of how hard I've worked.
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    (Applause)
