Maurice Williamson's 'big gay rainbow' speech with captions
-
0:00 - 0:02[Maurice Williamson]: Mr Speaker, I assume we'll be taking a split call,
-
0:02 - 0:06with my colleague Jamie Lee Ross, sort of a young and the vibrant versus the old and the boring.
-
0:06 - 0:08[laughter]
-
0:08 - 0:13And you sir, and members of the house will be forced to choose which one is which sir.
-
0:13 - 0:21Sir, I want to first of all congratulate the ? for this bill and I want to say further, the good news about the years in this parliament
-
0:21 - 0:28is you learn to deflect all of the dreadful sort of fire and brimstone accusations that are going to happen, sir.
-
0:28 - 0:35I've had reverend in my local electorate call "the gay onslaught will start the day after this bill is passed".
-
0:35 - 0:39And sir, we're really struggling to know what the gay onslaught will look like.
-
0:39 - 0:44We don't know if it'll come down the Packerena Highway as a series of troops,
-
0:44 - 0:48or will it be a gas that blows in the electorate and blocks us all in?
-
0:48 - 0:49[laughter]
-
0:49 - 0:55I also sir, had a catholic priest telling me that I was supporting an unnatural act. I found that quite interesting
-
0:55 - 0:59coming from someone whose taken an oath of celibacy for his whole life.
-
0:59 - 1:02[laughter]
-
1:02 - 1:04I always thought - celibacy - okay we'll go with celibacy.
-
1:04 - 1:07Ok. I haven't done it. I don't know what it's about.
-
1:07 - 1:10[laughter]
-
1:10 - 1:16I also had a letter telling me I would burn in the fires of hell for eternity and that was a bad mistake because I've got a degree in physics.
-
1:16 - 1:23I used the thermodynamic laws of physics - I put in my body weight and humidity and so on.
-
1:23 - 1:28I assumed the furnace to be at 5000 degrees and I will last just on 2.1 seconds.
-
1:28 - 1:29[laughter]
-
1:29 - 1:35It's hardly eternity, what do you think? And some more disgusting claims about what adoption would be.
-
1:35 - 1:41Well sir, I've got three fantastic adopted kids. I know how good adoption is and I found some of it just disgraceful.
-
1:41 - 1:46I found some of the bullying tactics really evil. And sir, I've never been scared of bullies when I was at primary school.
-
1:46 - 1:52However, a huge amount of the opposition was from people who were concerned, who were seriously
-
1:52 - 1:59worried what this might do to the fabric of our society. I respect their concerns, I respect their worries.
-
1:59 - 2:02They were worried about what it might do to their families and so on.
-
2:02 - 2:07Let me repeat to them now sir, all we are doing with this bill
-
2:07 - 2:15is allowing two people who love each other to have that love recognised by way of marriage.
-
2:15 - 2:21That is all we are doing. We are not declaring nuclear war on a foreign state.
-
2:21 - 2:26We are not bringing a virus in that could wipe out our agricultural system forever.
-
2:26 - 2:31We are allowing two people who love each other to have that recognised.
-
2:31 - 2:35And I can't see what's wrong with that for love nor money sir, I just cannot.
-
2:35 - 2:38I cannot understand why someone would be opposed -
-
2:38 - 2:43I understand why people don't like what it it is that others do. That's fine - we're all in that category.
-
2:43 - 2:47But I give a promise to those who are opposed to this bill right now.
-
2:47 - 2:53I give you a watertight guaranteed promise. The sun will still rise tomorrow.
-
2:53 - 2:58Your teenage daughter will still argue back with you as if she knows everything.
-
2:58 - 3:07Your mortgage not grow. You will not have skin diseases or rashes or toads in your bed sir, the world will just carry on.
-
3:07 - 3:15So don't make this into a big deal. This is fantastic for the people it effects, but for the rest of us life will go on.
-
3:15 - 3:21I finally can say sir, that one of the messages I had was that this bill was the cause of our drought.
-
3:21 - 3:23[laughter]
-
3:23 - 3:27This bill was the cause of our drought. Well if any of you follow my twitter account you will see that
-
3:27 - 3:32in the Packuranga electorate this morning it was pouring with rain.
-
3:32 - 3:35We had the most enormous big gay rainbow across my electorate.
-
3:35 - 3:39[laughter, cheers]
-
3:39 - 3:46This sign sir, it has to be a sign - if you're a believer it's certainly a sign.
-
3:46 - 3:49And can I finish, for all those who are concerned about this, with a quote from the bible.
-
3:49 - 3:53It's Deuteronomy - I thought Deuteronomy was a cat out of Cats but never mind.
-
3:53 - 4:00It's Deuteronomy chapter one, verse twenty nine "Be ye not afraid".
-
4:00 - 4:04[cheers, applause]
