I'm a Mormon, Polynesian Father, and Former NFL Player

  • 0:01 - 0:04
My name is Gabe W. P. Reid.
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    I’m an ex-NFL player.
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    I fumbled in Super Bowl.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
Born and raised in American Samoa,
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    I don’t think there’s anything like it.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
First of all, I have to tell my parents
I take my hat off to them.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
Now that I’m a father of four,
I don’t know how they did it.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    This is my son.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
He’s my only hope for a football player.
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    He’s my only boy.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
Milo was born when I was playing for BYU.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    Jaden Belle, she was born
when I played for Tennessee Titans.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    Adney was born in Chicago
when I played for the Bears,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
and this is my retirement baby -
  • 0:44 - 0:46
she was born when I was
    done playing football.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
When my wife and I talk
    about our NFL career,
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    we talk about the lessons
we learned through the hard times.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    I literally, seriously wanted
to quit so many times -
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    didn’t get drafted.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
I was on three different teams
    all my rookie year.
  • 0:59 - 1:00
I’m on the practice squad -
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    this is really tough.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
I’m really throwing in the towel.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    I thought if I quit,
  • 1:06 - 1:10
how am I ever gonna tell my kids
in the future "don't be a quitter”?
  • 1:10 - 1:11
I got down on my knees and said,
  • 1:11 - 1:15
“Okay, I’m gonna change my attitude
and be grateful for the opportunity.”
  • 1:15 - 1:17
So I did, went out to practice that day,
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    and literally three days later,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
I got a call from my agent saying
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    “Hey, you just got activated
    by the Chicago Bears.”
  • 1:25 - 1:29
    My relationship with my wife
and my kids is so much stronger
  • 1:29 - 1:32
because of the experience we had in NFL.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
What I love most about being a dad
is just seeing your kids happy.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    Can you blow a kiss?
  • 1:42 - 1:43
We love to go on hikes.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
    Last week they were complaining
    halfway through, and I said,
  • 1:47 - 1:51
“Look, I promise you, when we
get to the top, it'll be worth it.”
  • 1:51 - 1:53
Sure enough, when we got to the top,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
they said, “Dad, this is awesome!”
  • 1:55 - 1:57
To see them do something difficult,
  • 1:57 - 2:00
and to see them overcome it
    and to accomplish that,
  • 2:00 - 2:02
to see the confidence that it builds,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
that’s something very rewarding to me.
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    I’m Polynesian.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    I’m an ex-NFL player.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
I’m a father of four beautiful children
and husband of a wonderful wife.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
My name is Gabe W. P. Reid,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    and I’m a Mormon.
