Appalachia football star heads to college l Hidden America: Children of the Mountains PART 6/6

  • 0:00 - 0:03
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    It is now spring back
    in Paintsville Kentucky,
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    and that football superstar
    Shawn Grim has climbed
  • 0:09 - 0:12
a giant mountain all his own.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    Shawn Grim!
  • 0:14 - 0:18
    Beating the odds, Shawn Grim
    becomes the first person
  • 0:18 - 0:22
in his family ever to get
    a high school diploma.
  • 0:22 - 0:25
Shawn is on his way up and
    out, because Pikeville College,
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    about an hour from
    his home, has awarded
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    him a football scholarship.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    He gets that surgery
    on his damaged knee,
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    complete with tempting
    prescription painkillers
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    with his mother Tina.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    OK.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    It'd be $150 for these 30.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
If I wanted to sell, I
could get rid of it today.
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    But my son is more
    important than $1.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
As we said, it's a big
    achievement for Shawn
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    to go to college.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    His stepbrother, Little
    Man, dropped out of school
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    and has two kids.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    [MUSIC PLAYING - "LOLLIPOP"]
  • 0:56 - 0:57
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    Listen.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    We were in Little Man's
    trailer when Shawn played me
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    that ringtone again.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    Can I see the dance
    you do to "Lollipop"?
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    I don't know the dance.
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    I bet you do.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    Seriously, I don't.
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    Sorry.
  • 1:11 - 1:12
    I know the song.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    But just as Shawn is
    getting close to going off
  • 1:14 - 1:17
to his new life, a new blow.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    Little Man's girlfriend,
    the mother of his children,
  • 1:20 - 1:23
says at 3:00 AM she found Little
    Man and his 15-year-old half
  • 1:23 - 1:27
    sister out in back of
    the trailer having sex.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    Shawn's mother Tina
    called the cops.
  • 1:29 - 1:34
    Knowing they're blood-related,
    and knowing that that happened,
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    that is really
    disgusting in my book.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
    Shawn's stepdad Rick says
    if Little Man comes around,
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    he's ready.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
I'd blow his head off his body.
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    I'd shoot my own mother.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    The parents are
    heading out to see
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    their daughter, who's been taken
    to a social services facility.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
Later, Tina tells us she too
was molested by a family member
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    when she was young.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    Rick says this kind of
    thing doesn't just happen
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    in Appalachia, it's everywhere.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
Well, did you ever hear the
old saying, the closer the kin,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    the deeper in?
  • 2:10 - 2:11
It doesn't matter who it is.
  • 2:11 - 2:12
    They lay down.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    Black, white, crippled,
    it don't matter.
  • 2:14 - 2:19
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    In tears, Shawn's half
    sister tells their mother
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    that little man gave her
    pills or marijuana or money
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    in exchange for sex,
    and back home says
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    that wasn't the first time.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    It happens all so
    fast, you really
  • 2:33 - 2:37
    don't know what's
    going on around you.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    You just go on all
    through the days,
  • 2:40 - 2:41
    pretending like
    nothing's ever happened
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    because you're so scared.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    Little Man says
    he is not guilty.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    The mother of his children
    has now recanted her story.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    Well, unfortunately,
    Eastern Kentucky
  • 2:52 - 2:57
    has a stereotype of incest,
    but it's everywhere.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
It's in the whole United States.
  • 2:59 - 3:03
And we have to be able
to make sure and get out
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    that this cycle
    has to be broken.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    For Shawn, anger
    and embarrassment.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
In the wake of all this, he
    goes off to Pikeville College
  • 3:11 - 3:16
to begin his new life, trying
    to upend all those stereotypes.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    Us hillbillies don't
    want to do nothing
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    but drink and do drugs
    the rest of their life?
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    Is that what you're saying?
  • 3:24 - 3:27
    Stereotype.
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    Arriving at school,
    it's clear he
  • 3:28 - 3:33
    doesn't have the advantages
a lot of the other kids have.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    What's your story?
  • 3:35 - 3:36
I ain't got a lot of money and--
  • 3:36 - 3:39
You ain't got a lot of money?
  • 3:39 - 3:39
    No.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
What'd you live in back home?
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    A house.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
I slept wherever I fell asleep.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    Hut!
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    For eight weeks, he goes
    to football practice,
  • 3:51 - 3:54
    where his teammates
    are now twice his size.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    He also struggles
    in the classroom,
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    says he's feeling overwhelmed.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    And by the way, his
    girlfriend from the right side
  • 4:00 - 4:04
    of the tracks has long
    since broken up with him.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
Failing is probably I guess the
biggest thing to ever scare me.
  • 4:07 - 4:11
But I guess I'm just going to
    work harder and try harder.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    Even with the
    scholarship, he says
  • 4:13 - 4:15
he has no money for what
    other kids can afford--
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    supplies, food, fun.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    After only eight
    weeks, he loses heart.
  • 4:21 - 4:25
He drops out and goes back home.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    Found out I couldn't
    pay for the college.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    Had to come home.
  • 4:30 - 4:31
    No one's perfect.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    Winter is coming.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    The family needs coal,
    so Shawn heads out
  • 4:38 - 4:41
    for one of those illegal
    scavenging trips on the highway
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    wall on Route 23.
  • 4:43 - 4:46
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    And all the people
    whizzing by have no idea
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    that the kid digging coal
on the side of the road
  • 4:51 - 4:56
was once the hope and hero
    of Appalachian football,
  • 4:56 - 5:01
now on the side of the highway,
    with nothing around the bend.
  • 5:01 - 5:05
