May 25 - Two Ears to Hear

  • 0:01 - 0:03
How many ears do you have?
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    Two!
  • 0:04 - 0:06
How many ears do you need?
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    That's a trickier question.
  • 0:08 - 0:12
Of course, a boy or a girl
can hear with only one ear.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
    Ales was born in Belarus
with hearing in only one ear.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
Ales was born a month early.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
He didn't weigh as much as other babies.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
When he was three months old,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
his mother took him to a doctor for tests.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
During those tests, the doctor found
  • 0:27 - 0:31
that Ales could only hear with one ear.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    Ales' mother was shocked.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
She worked with children who were deaf.
  • 0:35 - 0:39
She loved them just as much
as she loved children who could hear.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
But she never imagined that her own child
  • 0:42 - 0:45
wouldn't be able to hear with two ears.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    She thought that the doctor
    must have made a mistake.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    Because she worked
    with children who couldn't hear,
  • 0:51 - 0:54
she also knew how to run hearing tests.
  • 0:54 - 0:58
So, she ran a hearing test on little Ales.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    The tests showed that Ales
really couldn't hear with both ears.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    But Ales' mother
still didn't want to believe it.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
She took him to a special hospital
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    for children with hearing difficulties.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
The doctor ran his own test.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    Ales' mother watched
    the tests on a monitor.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
She saw deep inside Ales' ears.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
    One ear looked normal;
    the other one didn't.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    She saw that nothing
    could be done to help.
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    She began to cry.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    The doctor, however,
didn't want to see her tears.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
"Why are you crying?" he said, gruffly.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
"Your son can hear with one ear,
    and that's enough."
  • 1:34 - 1:37
Back home, Ales' mother cried and cried.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    Then she talked to God.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
"Why did You allow this to happen?"
    she asked.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
After a while, she turned on
    some music on her phone.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    A beautiful hymn started playing.
  • 1:47 - 1:51
It was called, "Nearer, My God, to Thee."
  • 1:51 - 1:55
Ales' mother had heard the hymn
many times since she was a little girl.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
But for the first time, she understood
  • 1:57 - 2:00
that God really was near her.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
It felt good to know that God was near.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
But she still didn't want to believe
  • 2:05 - 2:07
that Ales would never hear with one ear.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
She kept on talking to God.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
"You can do anything," she said.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
"If You gave life to my son
    with only one ear,
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    You could heal him
and give him life with two ears."
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    Three months passed,
and Ales' father had a birthday.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
He didn't want a cake for his birthday.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    He didn't want any presents.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    He only wanted Ales
    to hear with both ears.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
"Our son will hear," he said.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
"God will do this as a gift
    for my birthday."
  • 2:36 - 2:39
They prayed and took Ales to the hospital
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    for another hearing test.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    There was nowhere to sit
    while they waited.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
Ales' mother carried him in her arms,
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    and he felt so heavy.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
Finally, the doctor called them in.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
When he finished the test, he said,
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    "Your son can hear perfectly
    with both ears!"
  • 2:55 - 2:58
Ales' mother couldn't believe her ears.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    She was so happy.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
"This is a miracle of God!" she exclaimed.
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    Indeed, it was a miracle.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    Ales' mother had seen
inside his ears on the monitor
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    three months earlier.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    She had seen
that no doctor could help Ales.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
But the Great Physician, Jesus Christ,
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    had healed her boy,
  • 3:16 - 3:19
and now he could hear with both ears.
  • 3:19 - 3:23
Ales' father wept with joy at the news.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
He was so happy that God had given him
  • 3:25 - 3:28
such a wonderful gift on his birthday.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
Today, Ales is six years old,
  • 3:31 - 3:34
and he can hear perfectly well
    with both ears.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
He uses his ears to learn Bible verses.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
He uses his ears to learn songs.
  • 3:39 - 3:43
He would like to use his ears
to learn to become a doctor
  • 3:43 - 3:45
and to help other boys and girls.
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    He knows that his hearing
    is a gift from God.
