February 1 - Renato’s Unexpected Mission

  • 0:04 - 0:07
    {\an2}When Renato was called
    {\an2}to be an Adventist volunteer,
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    {\an2}he imagined serving
    {\an2}in remote, exotic
  • 0:10 - 0:13
{\an2}locations, such as those he heard
{\an2}about in mission stories as a kid.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    {\an2}He was surprised when God
{\an2}sent him to a city instead.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
{\an2}Thailand is far from his home
    {\an2}country of Brazil,
  • 0:23 - 0:24
    {\an2}and Renato quickly learned
    {\an2}about the
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    {\an2}mission needs in big cities
    {\an2}such as Bangkok.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
{\an2}In the very beginning I got
    {\an2}a little bit disappointed because.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
{\an2}That was not the idea I had
    {\an2}of working the 1040 window.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
{\an2}I thought I would be teaching
    {\an2}in a bamboo school,
  • 0:37 - 0:38
{\an2}in the forest, in the jungles,
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    {\an2}but
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    {\an2}I realized that challenges
    {\an2}are everywhere
  • 0:43 - 0:47
{\an2}and they are so intense it
    {\an2}is hard to serve
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    {\an2}as a missionary anywhere.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
{\an2}Working in cities such as Bangkok
    {\an2}can be difficult.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    {\an2}People are often busy, isolated
{\an2}and seemingly in need of nothing.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    {\an2}Their lives are good
    {\an2}the way it is.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    {\an2}They're healthy,
    {\an2}they have beautiful families.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    {\an2}There are many wealthy people
    {\an2}here in Thailand.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    {\an2}Why do they need Jesus?
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    {\an2}That's the question.
  • 1:10 - 1:11
{\an2}Why do I need something else
  • 1:12 - 1:16
    {\an2}if I have everything
{\an2}a successful human being can have?
  • 1:17 - 1:21
{\an2}And we know that a life
{\an2}without Jesus is a meaningless life.
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    {\an2}Despite the challenges,
  • 1:23 - 1:25
{\an2}Renato has made it his mission
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    {\an2}to foster positive connections
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    {\an2}with the people around him.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
{\an2}The volunteer is not just about suffering
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    {\an2}and dealing with challenges
    {\an2}and difficulties.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
{\an2}Somehow, even if we don't deserve.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
    {\an2}God promotes hundreds of opportunities
{\an2}for us to enjoy life and be happy.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
{\an2}Renato's primary role as a volunteer
    {\an2}is teaching grade for English
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    {\an2}at Ekamai International
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    {\an2}School.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
{\an2}Teaching has allowed him to bond
    {\an2}with his students
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    {\an2}and learn about their lives.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
{\an2}95% of the kids in my school
  • 1:58 - 2:03
    {\an2}are non Christian so worshipping
    {\an2}in the morning for us
  • 2:03 - 2:03
    {\an2}is
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    {\an2}really important.
  • 2:04 - 2:08
    {\an2}From 7:00 to 7:20 AM
    {\an2}we have the worship session
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    {\an2}and that's my favorite moment
    {\an2}of the
  • 2:10 - 2:10
    {\an2}day.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    {\an2}After class, Renato is involved
    {\an2}with other ministries.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
{\an2}Such as visiting people in prison
    {\an2}and gathering resources
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    {\an2}to support refugees.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    {\an2}Renato's experiences
    {\an2}as an Adventist volunteer service,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
{\an2}or AVS worker have impacted him
  • 2:24 - 2:27
{\an2}in a way that will remain with him
    {\an2}for the rest of his.
  • 2:27 - 2:27
    {\an2}Life.
  • 2:28 - 2:32
    {\an2}I'm pretty sure that nobody
    {\an2}that goes to any country
  • 2:32 - 2:34
{\an2}to serve as an AVS will come back
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    {\an2}home the same way
    {\an2}they got into this.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    {\an2}It's a life changing opportunity
{\an2}and by the grace of God.
  • 2:41 - 2:45
{\an2}The work here in the missionary field
    {\an2}has changed my life
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    {\an2}in a very good way.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    {\an2}As we refocus our attention
    {\an2}to mission in the cities,
  • 2:50 - 2:52
{\an2}please pray for workers such as
  • 2:52 - 2:55
{\an2}Renato who share the light of Jesus
    {\an2}with those around them.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
{\an2}If you would like to learn more
    {\an2}about service opportunities,
