-
0:17 - 0:19That's what keeps me going, is getting better.
-
0:19 - 0:21I'm never going to be perfect, and I don't really think
-
0:21 - 0:24anyone is. But getting better feels good,
-
0:24 - 0:26and that's what Thrive Forward can help you do,
-
0:26 - 0:29is get better. It's not about cutting things
-
0:29 - 0:30out of your diet that maybe aren't so good.
-
0:30 - 0:32It's about adding new things in.
-
0:32 - 0:34Before you know it, they're going to
-
0:34 - 0:36crowd out the bad stuff anyway.
-
0:36 - 0:38We're not going to say, "Right and wrong," or
-
0:38 - 0:39even so much "Good and Bad."
-
0:39 - 0:41It's just about progress.
-
0:41 - 0:43The whole thing is about improvement
-
0:43 - 0:44whether you're at a very low level
-
0:44 - 0:46or a high level, I think Thrive Forward
-
0:46 - 0:49will help make you better.
-
0:50 - 0:52In the context of Thrive Forward,
-
0:52 - 0:55four significant factors will help you identify
-
0:55 - 0:58and understand the concept of clean.
-
0:58 - 1:021. Plant based. 2. Whole vs Processed.
-
1:02 - 1:053. Free of artificial ingredients.
-
1:05 - 1:094. Organic and non-GMO where possible.
-
1:11 - 1:12Why plant based nutrition?
-
1:12 - 1:14Well, there's a few reasons. One,
-
1:14 - 1:16plant based foods are the most nutrient dense.
-
1:16 - 1:18That means they have the most amount of nutrition
-
1:18 - 1:21and the least amount of calories.
-
1:21 - 1:24#2, they're packed with vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals
-
1:24 - 1:27and anti-oxidants. That's essential for good health.
-
1:27 - 1:30#3, most of them are alkaline forming,
-
1:30 - 1:32and that's huge. That helps reduce inflamation,
-
1:32 - 1:34it's good for bone health, it's good
-
1:34 - 1:35for your immune system, and it's good
-
1:35 - 1:37for your overall health. When you get
-
1:37 - 1:41those three together, that is good nutrition.
-
1:42 - 1:44So why whole foods over process foods?
-
1:44 - 1:47The basic rule of thumb - the more that you
-
1:47 - 1:48do to food,
-
1:48 - 1:49the less that's actually in it,
-
1:49 - 1:52nutritionally speaking. So the white rice here
-
1:52 - 1:56basically just has starch. There's really no fiber,
-
1:56 - 2:00no protein, no fat. The brown rice here, on the other hand, does
-
2:00 - 2:02have some of those other nutrients in it, and
-
2:02 - 2:06that's good. It also has vitamins and minerals in it
-
2:06 - 2:09that the white rice doesn't. So we've all heard
-
2:09 - 2:12of artificial ingredients in food. So what does
-
2:12 - 2:14artificial actually mean? Well, it's really anything
-
2:14 - 2:17that was concocted in a lab at a molecular level
-
2:17 - 2:20designed to add color, flavor, texture, improve
-
2:20 - 2:22shelf life, anything like that.
-
2:22 - 2:24As a general guide, if it sounds like a
-
2:24 - 2:30chemical and not a food, it probably is a chemical and it's probably not a good idea to eat.
-
2:30 - 2:32FDA approves a lot of things that aren't necessarily
-
2:32 - 2:37healthy. It just means that they're not going to kill you immediately, but that's different from health.
-
2:37 - 2:40If it's not completely chemical, it's likely that it's a
-
2:40 - 2:43derivative of corn or soy. That can be a problem,
-
2:43 - 2:46because those are both common allergens.
-
2:50 - 2:52Organic food is important.
-
2:52 - 2:54But it doesn't have to be certified organic.
-
2:54 - 2:56As long as it's grown without herbicides and
-
2:56 - 2:58pesticides, that's the key. Certification isn't
-
2:58 - 3:00necessary. I've been to farmers markets where
-
3:00 - 3:02I've seen someone go up to the farmer and say,
-
3:02 - 3:04"Is this certified organic?" and the farmer will say,
-
3:04 - 3:08"No, it's not, but it's grown without herbicides and pesticides 30 miles from here."
-
3:08 - 3:10"I picked it this morning."
-
3:10 - 3:13In my opinion, that is the farmer you buy from.
-
3:13 - 3:15For all we know, that person who is there could go
-
3:15 - 3:17then to a big box store and buy something
-
3:17 - 3:19that was certified organic from China that was picked
-
3:19 - 3:21three months ago.
-
3:21 - 3:24So it's not necessarily "Organic good, non-organic bad."
-
3:24 - 3:28I think what's really important is to buy from these
-
3:28 - 3:31small farms, and then what happens is that they get bigger.
-
3:31 - 3:33Then as they get bigger, then they can actually
-
3:33 - 3:36afford certification. Which means, then they create
-
3:36 - 3:41more demand, and then we have more options as well for good, certified organic food.

Lesson 1: How to Start Eating Clean
Add instead of subtract to create lasting change. Thrive Forward approaches nutrition from a plant-based perspective, but its progress—not perfection—that matters. There is no right or wrong way to start eating clean, and the tools provided in this program are beneficial for anyone seeking to improve overall wellness. (You don't have to be vegetarian or vegan to find value in Thrive Forward). Clean eating is predominately plant based, utilizes whole, unprocessed foods, is free of artificial ingredients, and opts for organic whenever possible. What It Means to Eat Clean
Whole, unprocessed plant-based foods are full of vitamins, minerals, quality macronutrients, and antioxidants the body needs for cellular regeneration. Plant-based foods are also beneficial to the planet, using fewer natural resources to support whole body (and whole planet) health. Eating clean means avoiding foods that were made in lab, or simply put: not eating foods with ingredients you can't pronounce. Artificial foods, foods that have been genetically modified, or are laden with pesticides and herbicides have the opposite effect of nourishment, causing stress on your body. - Video Language:
