BEE BARF?! All About HONEY
-
0:00 - 0:02Hi there! If you’re a kid
-
0:04 - 0:09and you don't think bee barf sounds like something you want eat, then this video is for you!
-
0:09 - 0:09[tiny barfing noise]
-
0:11 - 0:12Ewww.
-
0:16 - 0:21Hi it’s Emily from Bite Size Vegan and welcome
to another vegan nugget. I’m so excited -
0:21 - 0:26to be making another video just for you. So
far in my videos for kids we’ve talked about -
0:26 - 0:32why we don’t drink milk, or eat meat or
eggs, and heard from real vegan kids about -
0:32 - 0:38why they don’t and all the tasty foods they
eat instead, and even talked about how you -
0:38 - 0:43can be a superhero for the planet, the people
and the animals by being vegan. You can watch -
0:43 - 0:48all of those videos later if you want linked
there and in the video description. -
0:48 - 0:53Now just like in my other videos I promise
that I’ll tell you the truth no matter what -
0:53 - 0:57and that I won’t talk down to you, cause
you’re pretty smart! -
0:57 - 1:01If you don’t know already, being vegan means
you don’t eat animals or anything that comes -
1:01 - 1:06out of them like milk, eggs, cheese and, as
we’ll learn today, honey. -
1:06 - 1:11So what’s wrong with honey? Well today we’re
going to talk about how honey is made, which -
1:11 - 1:16is pretty gross, why taking it from the bees
who make it isn’t good for them, and why -
1:16 - 1:19farming bees isn’t good for the environment.
-
1:19 - 1:24Let’s start with how honey is made. You
probably already know that honey comes from -
1:24 - 1:30bees. But even most adults don’t know exactly
how it is that bees make honey. Well bees -
1:30 - 1:35fly out to flowers and suck the nectar from
the flowers with this long tongue-like thing -
1:35 - 1:40called a proboscis. They keep the honey in
their honey stomach or crop, because unlike -
1:40 - 1:46us they have two stomachs and then when they
get back to the hive, they barf. What’s -
1:46 - 1:52even grosser is they barf into the mouth of
another bee. Then the bees keep barfing the -
1:52 - 1:57honey back and forth between each other until
they finally spit it into their hive for safekeeping. -
1:57 - 2:02Now this sounds pretty gross to you and me
and certainly not something I want to be eating. -
2:02 - 2:08But for bees, making and eating honey is totally
natural and quite tasty. And honestly, it’s -
2:08 - 2:13pretty awesome to see the incredible things
other animals do, and the making of honey -
2:13 - 2:16is pretty darn incredible!
-
2:16 - 2:21Each bee visits 50 to 100 flowers to fill
their honey stomachs. To make just one pound -
2:21 - 2:28of honey, bees from the hive have to visit
two million flowers and fly 55,000 miles. -
2:28 - 2:34That’s farther than going around the whole
world twice! Bees really are incredible! -
2:34 - 2:39In fact, to tell other bees where the good
flowers are, bees will come back to the hive -
2:39 - 2:43and do what’s called a waggle dance, where
they shake their booty around and just by -
2:43 - 2:48watching what direction the bee is waggling in
and for how long, other bees know where to -
2:48 - 2:54find the flowers. It’s all based on some
pretty incredible math and some pretty incredible -
2:54 - 3:01booty action. I haven’t gotten it down yet.
-
3:01 - 3:05This brings me to the second part about why
vegans don’t eat honey. Farming bees isn’t -
3:05 - 3:10good for them and taking their honey away,
which is their food and the food they feed -
3:10 - 3:16to their little bee babies, certainly isn’t
good for them. Bees need their honey to survive. -
3:16 - 3:21They do all of the hard work, literally flying
around the world two times over to make food -
3:21 - 3:26for themselves and their families and then
we humans step in and take it to put it on -
3:26 - 3:32our breakfast cereals and cinnamon buns. That’s
not very fair if you ask me. -
3:32 - 3:37Honey farming also hurts bees. Bees, like
other animals and like us, can feel pain. -
3:37 - 3:42And just like we talked about in our videos
about meat, milk and eggs, it doesn’t make -
3:42 - 3:44sense to hurt anyone who can feel pain.
-
3:44 - 3:50For a beehive to work they need a queen bee,
kind of the big bossy momma bee who runs the -
3:50 - 3:54show. Now this is part is kind of sad, but
beekeepers have their queen bees and even -
3:54 - 3:59their whole bee colonies shipped to them in
the mail. The bees can be injured and even -
3:59 - 4:05killed while being shipped and when the queen
arrive the beekeepers often tear off her wings -
4:05 - 4:06so that she won’t fly away.
-
4:06 - 4:11The queen is also forced to be pregnant by
what’s called insemination, which is a big -
4:11 - 4:16word and a pretty awful thing for the queen.
She’s stuck in a tube where she can’t -
4:16 - 4:17move and poked and prodded.
-
4:17 - 4:23In the winter, beekeepers often kill the entire
hives, which can be anywhere between 20,000 -
4:23 - 4:29to 80,000 bees. You may wonder why they do
this. Well, like a lot of other weird things -
4:29 - 4:32adults do, it’s because of money.
-
4:32 - 4:36Now the last thing we’re going to talk about
is how farming bees isn’t good for the environment. -
4:36 - 4:42You may hear that we need bees to have food
and that’s true. With all the flying from -
4:42 - 4:47flower to flower that they do, bees are doing
something called pollinating, meaning helping -
4:47 - 4:49plants make more plants.
-
4:49 - 4:54But honeybees aren’t the best pollinators.
Other types of bees and insects do a much -
4:54 - 4:59better job. Honeybees aren’t even supposed
to be in North America, the continent I live -
4:59 - 5:04on, and because humans have brought them here,
the other bees that lived here first and other -
5:04 - 5:09insects that pollinate, have been kicked out
and even died from diseases the honeybees -
5:09 - 5:15brought with them. We do need bees in order
to have our own food, but we need native bees -
5:15 - 5:20and native pollinators to do their work, not
the honeybees. -
5:20 - 5:24All in all, honey’s kind of a hot mess.
It’s barfed, chewed, swallowed and re-barfed -
5:24 - 5:30by bees, taking it from the bees is super
mean because it’s their food they worked -
5:30 - 5:35really hard to make for themselves and their
families, beekeepers harm and even kill bees -
5:35 - 5:40in order to farm the honey, and it’s not
good for other bee species or the environment. -
5:40 - 5:45So maybe we should just leave honey to the
bees, shall we? -
5:45 - 5:50But there’s good news. If you really love
the sweet taste of honey, there are other things -
5:50 - 5:55you can have instead. You can use something
called agave nectar, coconut nectar, make -
5:55 - 6:01your own date paste, or use a vegan honey
substitute. I have links to all of those and -
6:01 - 6:05other resources on the blog post for this
video, which you can find linked up there -
6:05 - 6:10and in the description below. And when you
don’t eat honey, you help bees everywhere -
6:10 - 6:14feed their little bee babies, and that’s
pretty cool. -
6:14 - 6:18I hope this video was helpful. Let me know
what you thought of the video in the comments -
6:18 - 6:22and if you have other things you’d like
me to cover, feel free to tell me! -
