"Transgender" is not a scary word | Samuel Rae Bernstein | TEDxLagunaBlancaSchool
-
0:14 - 0:17My name is Samuel Bernstein,
I'm 15 years old, -
0:17 - 0:19and I am transgender.
-
0:21 - 0:24When I was younger,
I was told I was a girl. -
0:24 - 0:28I accepted it because I didn't think
I was allowed to be anything else. -
0:29 - 0:31But then my body started to change.
-
0:31 - 0:33I could tell you I was hitting puberty,
-
0:33 - 0:36but it felt like puberty was hitting me.
-
0:37 - 0:39They told me I was becoming a woman.
-
0:39 - 0:41I accepted it
-
0:41 - 0:43because I didn't think
I was allowed to be anything else. -
0:43 - 0:45But I was no longer myself.
-
0:46 - 0:49I became irritable
and pushed away my friends. -
0:49 - 0:51I began having panic attacks
-
0:51 - 0:54in hidden school backrooms
for hours at a time. -
0:55 - 0:57I no longer knew what "happy" felt like.
-
0:59 - 1:01By the time I was 13,
-
1:02 - 1:05I was carving my pain into my own skin,
-
1:05 - 1:07and I didn't want to be alive anymore.
-
1:09 - 1:11I was miserable, but I didn't know why.
-
1:13 - 1:17One day I sat in a psychiatrist's office,
as he asked me to define my own gender. -
1:18 - 1:19I told him I was a girl
-
1:19 - 1:22because I didn't think
I was allowed to be anything else. -
1:22 - 1:25But that night, I was still
stock on that question. -
1:25 - 1:29I went online and started exploring
and came across the word transgender. -
1:29 - 1:30I'd never heard it before.
-
1:31 - 1:32Transgender:
-
1:32 - 1:37someone who identifies with a gender,
other than the one assigned at birth. -
1:37 - 1:40Immediately, I knew exactly who I was.
-
1:41 - 1:44That same night,
I told my mom I wasn't a girl. -
1:44 - 1:48And instantly, I felt the fulfillment
I haven't felt in years. -
1:49 - 1:54My entire personality started to change,
as I began to express who I truly was. -
1:54 - 1:56I was happy again.
-
1:57 - 2:00I'm not telling you all of my very,
very personal story today -
2:00 - 2:02so that you will feel bad for me.
-
2:02 - 2:05I am telling my story because I have to.
-
2:08 - 2:11For many people,
transgender is a scary word. -
2:12 - 2:14Most people don't know
what it really means, -
2:14 - 2:15and even if they do,
-
2:15 - 2:17they're very uncomfortable
talking about it. -
2:17 - 2:19So that's why, I'm here today,
-
2:20 - 2:23to prove that like everybody else here,
-
2:23 - 2:28I'm just a person, whose identity
deserves recognition and respect. -
2:28 - 2:30Because while you may be scared of me,
-
2:30 - 2:33you do not realize
that I'm scared of you too. -
2:35 - 2:38When I began to express
who I actually was, -
2:38 - 2:39I thought the hard part was over,
-
2:40 - 2:42I thought that I'd discovered myself,
-
2:42 - 2:44and all my struggles
would just magically go away -
2:44 - 2:47because I could live as my true gender.
-
2:47 - 2:49But I was so wrong.
-
2:50 - 2:52I am scared.
-
2:53 - 2:55I am scared of not being accepted,
-
2:56 - 2:59I am scared of being harassed
in public bathrooms. -
3:00 - 3:04I am scared of doctors
not knowing how to treat me. -
3:04 - 3:09I am scared of growing up
and facing workplace discrimination. -
3:10 - 3:12I am scared that in this world,
-
3:12 - 3:16my legal rights could literally
be ripped away from me -
3:16 - 3:17at any moment.
-
3:18 - 3:23I am scared that some people
may never see me as a real man. -
3:24 - 3:26I am scared,
-
3:26 - 3:28not only for myself,
-
3:28 - 3:33but for every single transgender
person living in this world, -
3:33 - 3:35especially transgender women,
-
3:36 - 3:38non-binary transgender people,
-
3:39 - 3:40disabled trans people,
-
3:41 - 3:42trans people of color,
-
3:43 - 3:44and queer trans people,
-
3:44 - 3:51who will face so much more discrimination
and ignorance and hate in this world, -
3:51 - 3:55than I, a straight, white,
transgender male, will ever have to. -
3:56 - 4:00Even so, I am scared.
-
4:00 - 4:02We are scared.
-
4:03 - 4:04But we shouldn't have to be.
-
4:05 - 4:08Transgender should not be a scary word.
-
4:08 - 4:13No identity should ever be scary
or weird or shameful. -
4:14 - 4:17We, as people, need to come together.
-
4:18 - 4:20We need to celebrate diversity,
-
4:20 - 4:21but in doing so,
-
4:21 - 4:24we need to focus less
on what makes us different -
4:24 - 4:27and focus more
on what makes us the same. -
4:27 - 4:32Because under all of the beautiful layers
of what makes us who we are -
4:32 - 4:33is just a person,
-
4:33 - 4:37who wants to be loved
and accepted as themselves. -
4:38 - 4:40This is a hard world to live in,
-
4:40 - 4:41not just for me,
-
4:42 - 4:44not just for transgender people,
-
4:44 - 4:46but for everybody.
-
4:46 - 4:48We all have good days and bad days.
-
4:48 - 4:51We all have conflicts and pains.
-
4:52 - 4:53We all struggle.
-
4:53 - 4:57But most importantly,
we are all trying to persevere. -
4:58 - 4:59So I ask all of you,
-
5:00 - 5:04what is the point of using our energy
to hate on each other, -
5:04 - 5:07when we could be using it to help,
and support each other. -
5:08 - 5:11If your answer, like mine,
is "I don't know," -
5:11 - 5:14then I urge you to consider
what you can do to make a difference. -
5:15 - 5:17Let people tell their stories.
-
5:18 - 5:19Listen.
-
5:19 - 5:21Let people share their needs.
-
5:22 - 5:23Respect them.
-
5:24 - 5:28Encourage people
to live their happiest lives. -
5:28 - 5:30And please, most importantly,
-
5:30 - 5:34just treat people
the way you want to be treated. -
5:34 - 5:35Thank you.
-
5:35 - 5:39(Applause)
