Illness and Self-Discovery ~ Mooji

  • 0:01 - 0:05
    Illness and Self-Discovery
  • 0:05 - 0:10
[Questioner:] The question I've got is how do you
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    handle health issues?
  • 0:12 - 0:14
When your health starts breaking down,
  • 0:14 - 0:18
how do you handle that as an observer of your life,
  • 0:18 - 0:21
and sort of be conscious of...
  • 0:21 - 0:24
[Mooji:] Sometimes it is when, even
  • 0:24 - 0:28
then sometimes physical challenges of health,
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    your is health deteriorating,
  • 0:30 - 0:34
can be a tremendous aid to discovering your Self.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    Actually, you see, sometimes this.
  • 0:38 - 0:43
Many times, also, I have met the people
  • 0:43 - 0:46
when they are very sick, very sick,
  • 0:46 - 0:49
in a state of deep sickness.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
And I've met them, spent time with them
  • 0:51 - 0:54
and then they recover and get well after.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
And I say to them, face to face, I tell them,
I prefer you when you are sick.
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    [Laughter]
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    You're more luminous, more humble,
  • 1:01 - 1:05
    more open, more alive, somehow.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
You start to get well, then you get cocky
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    and think you're
something special, or something like this.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
Sometimes I see this thing, also,
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    that some people, also,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
we talked about it, they come to satsang
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    when they are feeling
very low in themselves, very low,
  • 1:20 - 1:24
and they get energized through again,
being reminded of who they are,
  • 1:24 - 1:28
and with all this new energy
they go and spend it on nonsense things,
  • 1:28 - 1:32
rather than use it to transcend,
to burn the rest of the garbage,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
they are already, go and spend it
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    in a bad place.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
So, it's not such a bad thing and even sometimes
  • 1:39 - 1:43
because you have begun to observe
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    your self, observe your mind,
  • 1:45 - 1:49
    sometimes sickness comes
as a kind of healing even, sometime.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
It's like the Beingness is burping up some old stuff
  • 1:52 - 1:55
and it comes up in the form of
a kind of bodily sickness for a while,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    even, you see?
  • 1:57 - 2:00
Sometimes people have been sick, sick, sick.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    We call it satsang flu.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    They go to the doctor,
they can't find anything wrong with them.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    But, they just have to...
some psychic debris is coming up
  • 2:09 - 2:11
and it has to come out.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    Sometimes it's time of sickness.
Sometimes it's a physical sickness come.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
It can take different forms, and you're observing.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
I want to say something just briefly
    about this observing.
  • 2:20 - 2:24
When I say, Observe yourself, I don't mean
observe yourself for the rest of your life, actually.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    There's a point to observing.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
The point to observing is to come to see
  • 2:28 - 2:31
that all the things that you are observing are transient.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
They come and go. They come and go.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
Has anything every come and stayed?
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    Everything is coming and going.
  • 2:39 - 2:43
As soon as you see that there is
an impermanence about what you experience,
  • 2:43 - 2:47
    visually, emotionally, psychically,
  • 2:47 - 2:50
then you can take it off the fire. It comes off the fire.
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    Something begins to
now go, 'Who is observing them?'
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    You see?
  • 2:56 - 2:59
You're observing the things and you call it 'my life.'
  • 2:59 - 3:02
So, there's something endearing about that
  • 3:02 - 3:05
because you say, 'I'm watching myself,
I see really how I have been
  • 3:05 - 3:10
for a large part of my life I've really been
    not conscious of my self.'
  • 3:10 - 3:13
It's like just going along because of conditioning.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
Speaking, doing - doing things, but now
  • 3:15 - 3:18
something is more observing this and seeing that,
  • 3:18 - 3:20
but wait a minute, that a very unconscious behavior.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
That's very superficial in some way.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    And now you're.... it's a different phase,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    it's a deeper phase,
a more conscious phase, you're observing.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
But, also, gradually, at a certain point
  • 3:31 - 3:34
you start to see, well you know it's pretty much
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    similar kind of stuff overall.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
And eventually, life and all your experiences
  • 3:39 - 3:43
become less itemized and single as experiences
  • 3:43 - 3:47
and start to just feel like
    one soup of sensations, actually.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
That it's just, kind of, well you know,
it's just life, basically. It feels like this.
  • 3:50 - 3:54
Now the one who is observing
  • 3:54 - 3:56
this one we must not miss today.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
Who is observing all of these things?
  • 3:58 - 4:01
Not who is telling a story,
    but who actually observes this?
  • 4:01 - 4:04
And for this you must turn the consciousness around,
  • 4:04 - 4:09
away from looking at the items of the phenomena
  • 4:09 - 4:12
and look at.... try and see the one who sees.
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    Don't create or imagine.
  • 4:14 - 4:17
This is one of the most profound insights,
  • 4:17 - 4:21
is going to be revealed out of this.
  • 4:21 - 4:27
Because you're not going to find
    an object there, as yourself.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
I am cutting things short a bit by telling you that
  • 4:29 - 4:32
because I prefer to hear this from you.
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    When the question is turned...
    before you're looking at objects,
  • 4:37 - 4:39
but now you're looking for the subject.
  • 4:39 - 4:44
Does the subject have a shape,
or color or size or gender?
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    All these you can see,
    all these you can see.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    The one who sees....
can the one who sees be seen?
  • 4:50 - 4:53
This should be your question now.
  • 4:53 - 4:57
    This question is
going to reveal greatly for you something.
  • 4:58 - 5:00
Don't mind if you get a bit sick.
  • 5:00 - 5:03
Sometimes the sickness is there and
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    somehow you'll observe, also,
  • 5:04 - 5:09
include the sicknesses in your observation.
  • 5:09 - 5:12
    It is also momentary.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
[Q:] What do you do in terms of your healing...
  • 5:16 - 5:17
    you just... you just?
  • 5:17 - 5:20
[M:] You will do as some different people, differently.
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    Some people, in sicknesses,
  • 5:22 - 5:24
you start to feel sick and very quickly,
  • 5:24 - 5:28
    from the first showing
of sickness they are calling for help.
  • 5:28 - 5:30
They call the doctor, they call the nurse,
  • 5:30 - 5:33
    call hospital, call everything.
  • 5:33 - 5:38
For others, they wait, and they watch. You see?
  • 5:38 - 5:41
As you become more and more still inside,
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    the panic is less frequent.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    You go down.
  • 5:46 - 5:48
Don't pull your parachute too quickly.
  • 5:48 - 5:51
So, slowly, slowly, somehow feel the body
  • 5:51 - 5:53
and then somehow, rather than panic,
  • 5:53 - 5:56
you maybe feel initial panic that subsides
  • 5:56 - 5:57
and there's just the feeling in the body
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    the pure sensation of illness.
  • 5:59 - 6:00
    You observe it,
  • 6:00 - 6:03
and somehow using this, you're deepening
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    your meditative powers also.
  • 6:05 - 6:08
    Going deeper and deeper,
you come to a place where you see,
  • 6:08 - 6:12
    'I am no-thing at all,
    I am no-thing at all.'
  • 6:13 - 6:17
    And sometimes this is one of the most healthy seeing;
  • 6:17 - 6:20
that I am not an object, because when
you think you're the object: panic!
  • 6:20 - 6:23
    When you panic: worry.
And worry is a bad thing for sickness.
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    Okay?
  • 6:26 - 6:28
But sometimes we think, 'But if I don't worry
  • 6:28 - 6:30
    maybe I do nothing.'
  • 6:30 - 6:32
And this is the trap, in a sense
  • 6:32 - 6:36
because when you become very clear and empty
  • 6:36 - 6:39
    then the universe moves.
  • 6:40 - 6:43
The feeling 'I', listen to this,
  • 6:43 - 6:46
    the feeling 'I' is there.
  • 6:46 - 6:50
    It's like a sliding bar of 'I'ness,
  • 6:50 - 6:53
    If it slides this way
    towards the body-mind identification
  • 6:53 - 6:58
and you believe, 'I am a person,'
if you take your 'I' to be a person,
  • 6:58 - 7:00
    then the person is responsible
  • 7:00 - 7:03
for taking care if its own life.
  • 7:04 - 7:08
But if the 'I' is identified as consciousness,
  • 7:08 - 7:10
then it become the universe's responsibility
  • 7:10 - 7:13
to take care of your body.
  • 7:14 - 7:18
I say again: If you identify your
  • 7:18 - 7:21
feeling 'I' as being a person,
  • 7:21 - 7:25
then it becomes the person's responsibility
  • 7:25 - 7:27
to take care of the bodily life.
  • 7:27 - 7:32
But if the feeling 'I' or 'I Am' is identified as
  • 7:32 - 7:35
    consciousness, then the universe will
  • 7:35 - 7:38
    take care of your life,
  • 7:38 - 7:41
and it will do a far better job than your mind can do it.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
This is the important thing you will find out.
  • 7:46 - 7:49
The more you somehow just be quiet with yourself,
  • 7:49 - 7:51
watch the panic buttons going on...
  • 7:51 - 7:53
watch the fingers going to press...
  • 7:53 - 7:56
but just you stay quiet, only as the seer for a moment.
  • 7:56 - 8:00
Don't think, 'If I keep on going like that
I'm going to let the body die.'
  • 8:00 - 8:02
    I can't guarantee this;
  • 8:02 - 8:06
I can say that I've been through
these type of things to tell you now,
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    don't panic. Be there.
  • 8:08 - 8:12
    And then intuitively, spontaneously,
  • 8:12 - 8:15
if help is destined for this body,
  • 8:15 - 8:18
it will come it such beautiful ways.
  • 8:18 - 8:22
It come, because, when you live as an individual,
  • 8:22 - 8:24
    you move like an individual;
  • 8:24 - 8:26
but when you live as consciousness,
  • 8:26 - 8:29
    you move like an environment.
  • 8:30 - 8:32
It's like help starts to come from places,
  • 8:32 - 8:35
different places, starts to come, it's like a wave come.
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    You're not just one person.
  • 8:37 - 8:40
It's like all... wherever your energy comes
  • 8:40 - 8:42
joins your energy and help you.
  • 8:42 - 8:45
So many, so many forces come
  • 8:45 - 8:47
    to fulfill an action.
  • 8:47 - 8:50
It is doing it anyway, but we've so blocked it out
  • 8:50 - 8:55
    that you're not seeing,
you're not living by Grace, consciously.
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    You see?
  • 8:58 - 9:01
So you've started beautifully, continue like that
  • 9:01 - 9:05
and just watch it, watch it. You see?
  • 9:05 - 9:07
Then somehow you'll feel at some point, you know...
  • 9:07 - 9:11
either someone spontaneously come and say,
'Actually, I have a friend of mine who really
  • 9:11 - 9:14
    knows about this,' or something,
    and then you say, 'Ah.'
  • 9:14 - 9:19
You'll sense how to read life more energetically,
  • 9:19 - 9:23
more than just, sort of, reading the print.
  • 9:23 - 9:27
You're sensing life, because we are life!
  • 9:27 - 9:31
You're sensing, you're moving more with intuition
  • 9:31 - 9:35
and your spontaneity is alive in you.
  • 9:35 - 9:38
    And not just living here.
  • 9:40 - 9:45
The human being, for a while is human,
  • 9:45 - 9:48
    and then more Being.
  • 9:48 - 9:51
You see? Sometimes very human side,
  • 9:51 - 9:54
    then gradually
becoming more into the Beingness side.
  • 9:54 - 9:57
When you begin to observe life
  • 9:57 - 10:01
you're moving more fully into the aspect of Beingness:
  • 10:01 - 10:04
    much more intuitive, more sensing.
  • 10:04 - 10:07
Then beyond this is the Absolute.
  • 10:07 - 10:09
When I say beyond, I don't mean beyond
  • 10:09 - 10:12
    spatially, in time and measurement.
  • 10:12 - 10:14
    I mean beyond in essence.
  • 10:14 - 10:16
Meaning that in the core of this,
  • 10:16 - 10:19
in the nucleus of the Being is the Absolute,
  • 10:19 - 10:22
    and you are this.
  • 10:23 - 10:24
    [Q:] Thank you very much.
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    [M:] Very good.
