Riff #3: How to play Walk This Way - Aerosmith (Songs Guitar Lesson RF-003)
-
0:06 - 0:10(Playing Aerosmith "Walk this way")
-
0:35 - 0:36Hi how ya doin'? Justin here
-
0:36 - 0:38In this lesson today we are going to be
checking out -
0:38 - 0:40"Walk This Way" by Aerosmith
-
0:40 - 0:43We are going to be looking at
the main riff, as well as -
0:43 - 0:46the riff in the verse. Because a lot of
people seem to struggle with that one. -
0:46 - 0:50Um, I've done quite a lot of research
making sure that I get it exactly right -
0:50 - 0:53Um so let's get to it and check it out!
-
0:53 - 0:57Okay we're starting here with an open
"A" string (Play notes) -
0:57 - 1:02First finger goes down in the first fret
of the third string -
1:02 - 1:05Slides it up to the second fret of the
third string -
1:07 - 1:09and then we play the second fret
-
1:09 - 1:13of the fourth string
-
1:14 - 1:17and then the low E second time through
-
1:24 - 1:28Second time
(Plays guitar) -
1:32 - 1:36we got a little here second finger
third fret of the thicker string -
1:37 - 1:41flick off to first finger second fret
fourth string -
1:41 - 1:54(Plays guitar)
-
1:55 - 1:59finishing off there that last time
with a little "A" chord -
1:59 - 2:020 2 2
-
2:03 - 2:06one time, nice and slow
all the way through. Here we go. -
2:06 - 2:083, 4
-
2:08 - 2:33(Plays guitar)
-
2:34 - 2:36Okay the picking for the riff
-
2:36 - 2:38Down, Up, Down, Up
-
2:39 - 2:43Down, Up, Down Up, Down
-
2:45 - 2:47Down, Up Down Up
-
2:47 - 2:49Down Up Down Up
-
2:49 - 2:51Down Down
-
2:51 - 2:52Full speed
-
2:52 - 3:03(Plays guitar)
-
3:05 - 3:09Okay here we go looking at the verse
riff for "Walk This Way." -
3:09 - 3:12It's eh, based around kind of a
"C" power chord -
3:12 - 3:16We got out first finger sitting here
at the 8th fret of the thicker string -
3:16 - 3:19and the third finger
on the tenth fret of the fifth string -
3:19 - 3:20and they stay put for
-
3:20 - 3:21pretty much the whole thing
-
3:21 - 3:24so it turns out to be a little bit of
a little finger workout -
3:24 - 3:26Uh, let me just play the riff for you
-
3:26 - 3:27first of all so you could see
-
3:27 - 3:28what's going on
-
3:28 - 3:29Sounds like this
-
3:29 - 3:293, 4
-
3:29 - 3:41(Plays guitar)
-
3:41 - 3:44Truly quite specific,
it's kind of on the record -
3:44 - 3:46you gotta really listen to it and get
the accent right -
3:46 - 3:48so what notes are loud and
what notes are quiet. -
3:48 - 3:50I'm gonna show you what the notes are
but you're gonna have to listen -
3:50 - 3:52to get that other info.
-
3:52 - 3:53So, what we got here is
-
3:53 - 3:56(Plays guitar)
-
3:56 - 4:00So first of all this is the root note of
the eight fret of the thicker string -
4:00 - 4:04Three picks, so, Down Up Down Up
-
4:04 - 4:07and then that last note there is
the note "G", which is the -
4:07 - 4:09third finger on the tenth fret
-
4:09 - 4:10(Plays guitar)
-
4:10 - 4:13Down, Up, Down, Up
-
4:13 - 4:14Up, Down, Flick
-
4:15 - 4:21So, Down, Up, Down, Up
Up, Down, Flick -
4:21 - 4:24(Plays guitar)
-
4:24 - 4:321 e & a 2 e & a
1 e & a 2 e & a -
4:32 - 4:34I'm letting them all ring together
there of course -
4:34 - 4:37But you want the
(plays guitar) -
4:37 - 4:39Get that palm mute and it will
really help with your accenting. -
4:39 - 4:42So, the first part
(plays guitar) -
4:45 - 4:48The second part
(plays guitar) we play, first of all, -
4:48 - 4:50the eighth down on the thicker string
-
4:50 - 4:52(Plays guitar)
-
4:52 - 4:53So we got here eight
-
4:53 - 4:56then little finger's going on the tenth
fret of the fourth string -
4:56 - 4:58(Plays guitar)
-
4:58 - 5:02And then we're plucking the fifth string
Down, Up, Down -
5:02 - 5:04(Plays guitar)
-
5:05 - 5:09Then little finger is jumping
right up to the thirteenth fret -
5:09 - 5:10(Plays guitar)
-
5:10 - 5:13and I can't tell if it's a flick off
or not. I think it's just play, -
5:13 - 5:19but thirteen, ten, twelve, flick off.
Definitely that last one's -
5:19 - 5:20a flick off there
-
5:20 - 5:23(Plays guitar)
-
5:23 - 5:31so, Down Up Down
Down Up Down Flick Off -
5:31 - 5:50(Plays guitar)
-
5:50 - 5:52Okay joining the two
together -
5:52 - 6:08(Plays guitar)
-
6:08 - 6:10up to speed with a little bit of palm
muting -
6:26 - 6:28Just really quickly
the one little bit that -
6:28 - 6:29I haven't shown you that'll
kinda get you pretty much -
6:29 - 6:32through the whole tune if I do
is the chorus -
6:32 - 6:36which is a "C" power chord
(plays chord) -
6:36 - 6:39and this little riff here
which is nothing, nothing -
6:39 - 6:43seven, eight, ten
and then nothing -
6:43 - 6:45on the thinner string
-
6:45 - 6:48(Plays guitar)
-
6:48 - 6:50then to a "F" power chord
-
6:50 - 6:52(Plays guitar)
-
6:52 - 6:57and then this is on the thinner 3 strings
ten, ten, eleven -
6:57 - 7:02(Plays guitar)
-
7:03 - 7:08um, and with that you've probably
got most of the rhythm parts anyway -
7:08 - 7:11Um there's so great solos
to transcribe in as well -
7:11 - 7:11a lot to be learned
-
7:11 - 7:14it's a difficult tune to play,
really well, this one -
7:14 - 7:16kind of an easy one to play badly
if you like -
7:16 - 7:19but particularly that verse riff
it takes a little bit of practice -
7:19 - 7:21to get it kinda right in the pocket.
Don't really that I've got it -
7:21 - 7:23in the pocket yet, but i'm working on it.
-
7:23 - 7:25So um, hope you've had fun with that
and I'll see you for another -
7:25 - 7:29riff next week!
See you later, Bye bye.
