Microsoft WSUS Patch Approval & Deployment Process | Windows Server 2022

  • 0:00 - 0:01
    What's up, guys?
  • 0:01 - 0:04
This is Sohan and you are
    watching Technical Spark.
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    In our WSUS series,
    in this episode,
  • 0:06 - 0:09
we are going to see how
    to approve and deploy
  • 0:09 - 0:13
    patches on your Windows
    Client Machines step by step.
  • 0:13 - 0:15
This is one of the very
    important and crucial part
  • 0:15 - 0:19
of the WSUS because when we
    install and configure WSUS,
  • 0:19 - 0:23
our main purpose is to serve the
    updates to all manager machines.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    And in earlier
    videos, we already
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    saw how to install
    and configure WSUS,
  • 0:27 - 0:31
as well as we already saw how to
configure the GPO so that when
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    any new machine
    joins your domain,
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    it will automatically
    report to your WSUS server.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    So similar way, what
    I have done here
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    is I have approved some
    patches in my WSUS.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    For example, let me
    go to the Updates
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    and then expand
    this, All Updates.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
If you see, right now, these
    are the unapproved updates
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    which is showing here.
  • 0:50 - 0:53
So which means this will not
install to any of the machines.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    But however, if any system
    requires any patches,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    then it will show you
    in here, Needed Count.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    If you don't know
    how to get that,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    simply right click
    here and choose
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    what are the desired field
    you would like to add
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    into this particular dashboard.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    If you want to deploy
    any of the software,
  • 1:10 - 1:14
then you can simply right click
and then go to the Approve.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    Choose the group
    where you would like
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    to add [INAUDIBLE] app
    updates to be deployed.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    Right now, I'm not
    going to approve this.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
But if I go to the
    top, then you will
  • 1:22 - 1:26
observe that some of the updates
    have already been approved.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
So let me show you that.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    Simply click on here,
    Approve Updates.
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    Refresh.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    So these are the updates
    which I have already
  • 1:35 - 1:40
    approved in my WSUS, like
    Microsoft Defender Antivirus,
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    Software Removal Tool.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    So these are very crucial
    and very important
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    updates which should be
    served on a day-to-day basis.
  • 1:46 - 1:47
And if I go to the Computers.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    So guys, in Computers,
what I'm going to do here
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    is since both the
    machines are 100% patched
  • 1:53 - 1:57
so we'll add one more machine
    into our this particular WSUS.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
    We have already configured
    the policy in GPO.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
So if we join any machine in
    [INAUDIBLE] Active Directory,
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    then that machine
    will automatically
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    report to our WSUS server.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
We don't have to do any
    manual configuration.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
So next what we will do, I
    have another machine which
  • 2:13 - 2:15
I have joined into the domain.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    But after joining
    domain, I haven't
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    started that machine, which
    means the first reboot
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    is not completed yet.
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    For that, let me
    turn on that machine.
  • 2:23 - 2:27
    Here we go, the
    machine is powered on.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    Let me enter the credentials.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
OK, guys, now we'll log in
    with our domain administrator.
  • 2:32 - 2:38
So Technical Spark is my domain,
    backslash, administrator.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
So this is the first time
    I'm logging into the domain.
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    So machine has started now.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    Technicalspark.com is my domain.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
And the host name is Patching.
  • 2:46 - 2:50
Now let's go to the Windows,
    then Settings, Updates.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    Great, friends, it looks like
    my this particular machine
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    has already detected
    and has downloaded
  • 2:55 - 3:00
one update from our WSUS server
and it's asking us to install.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    It didn't get installed
    automatically.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    Why?
  • 3:03 - 3:06
Because in our GPO policy, we
    have configured these settings
  • 3:06 - 3:10
    that download updates
    automatically and ask
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    for install.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    So it's completely working
    as per our group policy.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
And as you can see in
    the top, some settings
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    are managed by
    your organization.
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    Click on Install Now and
    it will start installing.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    Meanwhile, let's
    check out in our WSUS
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    server whether this machine
is showing in our WSUS or not.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    For that, let me jump
    to the WSUS server.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    OK, let's refresh the screen.
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    Yeah, perfect guys.
  • 3:36 - 3:40
    It just got updated here,
    Patching.technicalspark.com.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    And patch level is 96%.
  • 3:43 - 3:49
And there are almost 67 patches
which are needed by this server.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    Right now, only one software
    is getting installed.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    But yeah, there are
    almost 67 softwares
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    which we need to approve.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
So how we can do that?
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    Let's go to the
    All Updates again.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
Or you can also go to the WSUS.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    And if you observe here,
    Update Status, it says,
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    updates needed by computer.
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    Click on that.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    [AUDIO LOGO]
  • 4:10 - 4:16
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    So these are basically
    updates which need
  • 4:18 - 4:21
to be approved for our server.
  • 4:21 - 4:22
So how we can do that?
  • 4:22 - 4:25
    Just review all the updates
    which are available here.
  • 4:25 - 4:26
    Scroll down.
  • 4:26 - 4:29
If you think that one of
    the updates is not required,
  • 4:29 - 4:33
    you can unselect that
    particular update like this.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
But right now, I'm going to
    select all the updates just
  • 4:36 - 4:40
    for your demonstration and
    then right click, Approve.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    So where exactly my this
    particular machine is present?
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    Then it's in unassigned group.
  • 4:45 - 4:50
So we have to select that and
    click on Approve or Install.
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    OK.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    Now it's approving
    all the updates.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    Click on Close.
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    My updates have been approved.
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    Now if I go to
    the WSUS, then you
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    can see there are almost
    7 GB of updates which
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    are getting downloaded now.
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    Where exactly all
    the updates will
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    download in your WSUS server?
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    So as I said earlier
    in this PC, I
  • 5:10 - 5:15
    have created one
    directory that is D drive.
  • 5:15 - 5:20
In D drive under WSUS Directory,
here your all the patch updates
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    will get stored.
  • 5:22 - 5:25
    Now let's go back
    to All Updates.
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    Now, guys, let's go
    to our client machine
  • 5:26 - 5:30
    to see whether updates
    got installed or not.
  • 5:30 - 5:34
    Perfect, the update
    is installed.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    Click on Check for updates.
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    Right now it's not
    showing any updates.
  • 5:37 - 5:41
    It's just because our WSUS
server is yet to be updated.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    Now let me check out
    the Update History.
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    Driver update is
    installed on 19/01.
  • 5:47 - 5:51
    Other updates is
    installed today.
  • 5:51 - 5:55
    So, guys, now let's go
    back to our WSUS server.
  • 5:55 - 5:59
    All Computers, perfect, WSUS.
  • 5:59 - 6:02
    As of now, [INAUDIBLE]
    has been downloaded.
  • 6:02 - 6:05
So I'm not going to cover
    the other things here
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    but I'll let you know
    what exactly will happen.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    It will download
all the 7 GB of data
  • 6:10 - 6:13
in our server, which means all
    the updates will be downloaded
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    in our WSUS server.
  • 6:15 - 6:19
    And then it will start
    distributing this update
  • 6:19 - 6:22
    to the PC to which
    these updates are
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    required, like my recently
    domain joined machine,
  • 6:25 - 6:27
    Patching server.
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    So all these updates
    will be deployed
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    on that particular machine.
  • 6:31 - 6:34
    And once the machine
    is updated, then you
  • 6:34 - 6:36
    will be able to see
    100% status here,
  • 6:36 - 6:40
which is right now showing 96%.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
    And the exclamation
    mark you are seeing here
  • 6:42 - 6:44
    will be gone automatically.
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    So hopefully, friends, now you
are very much or pretty much
  • 6:47 - 6:51
    clear that how
    these things works.
  • 6:51 - 6:52
