Trump Just Threw EVERYONE For A Loop

  • 0:00 - 0:04
    Donald Trump and Vladimir
Putin are having a falling out.
  • 0:04 - 0:08
What happened to Trump having all the cards?
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    Welcome to America Uncovered.
I’m Matt Gnaizda.
  • 0:10 - 0:15
    Remember when everybody was talking
about how Trump was Putin’s puppet?
  • 0:15 - 0:18
And not just because Trump looks like
a grown up Beaker from the Muppets.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
Or how he was rootin’ for Putin?
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    How about the Trump-Putin alliance?
  • 0:24 - 0:28
    Well, things aren’t exactly
as many make it out to be.
  • 0:28 - 0:35
It seems Trump has had it with Putin.
He came
into office promising to end the Ukraine war…
  • 0:35 - 0:39
    But Putin keeps smacking that
    idea down left and right.
  • 0:39 - 0:45
Now it looks like negotiations are out
    the window.
A very high window that Putin
  • 0:45 - 0:48
swears the negotiations fell out of by accident.
  • 0:48 - 0:53
Back in April when Russia launched a
massive drone and missile attack on Kyiv,
  • 0:53 - 0:58
    Trump told Vladimir to “STOP!”
This all happened soon after Trump
  • 0:58 - 1:02
said Russia was “ready to get a deal.”
    I never watched ‘Let’s Make a Deal,’
but
  • 1:02 - 1:07
I’m pretty sure you don’t make one
by trying to murder Wayne Brady.
  • 1:07 - 1:13
And even after Trump had a 2-hour call with
Putin that he thought went “very well”,
  • 1:13 - 1:40
Things really haven’t improved since then.
Man, don’t you hate it when you’re talking
  • 1:40 - 1:44
    to somebody on the phone
and you can tell
    they aren’t paying attention
and are doing
  • 1:44 - 1:49
    something else,
like checking Instagram
or laying siege to a sovereign nation?
  • 1:50 - 1:55
And the way Trump frames it makes it
seem as though Putin snapped somehow.
  • 2:03 - 2:09
Which is like saying a Killer Whale snaps
when
it kills a trainer at a theme park.
How are you
  • 2:09 - 2:15
surprised? Killer is literally in the name.
Trump went so far as to write that Putin
  • 2:15 - 2:20
    “has gone absolutely CRAZY!”
Although to go crazy would imply
  • 2:20 - 2:25
having to go there from being not crazy.
This happened just before the biggliest of
  • 2:25 - 2:28
    Russia’s drone and missile
    attacks against Ukraine.
  • 2:28 - 2:33
Now, this wouldn’t be the first time people have
    questioned
what’s going on in ole Putin’s noggin.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
And as of this recording, Putin has
yet to show that he really wants to
  • 2:37 - 2:43
    end the war.
War is the only thing that puts
    a smile on his face.
This is his smiling face.
  • 2:43 - 2:49
So Trump is now reportedly weighing sanctions…
And warned on Truth Social that
“What Vladimir
  • 2:49 - 2:54
Putin doesn’t realize is that if it weren’t
    for me,
lots of really bad things would have
  • 2:54 - 2:59
already happened to Russia, and I mean
    REALLY BAD.
He’s playing with fire!”
  • 2:59 - 3:04
Though given Russia’s average yearly temperature
    is 30 below a witch’s teat,
playing with fire is
  • 3:04 - 3:08
kind of a Russian survival tactic.
    So what happened?
Why hasn’t
  • 3:08 - 3:12
Trump been able to stop Putin from
    continuing his invasion of Ukraine?
  • 3:12 - 3:16
Keep in mind, Trump has done much
to grease the wheels for Russia.
  • 3:16 - 3:21
He told off Ukrainian President Zelensky...
Had the US vote with Russia
  • 3:21 - 3:26
    against a UN Resolution…
And spared Russia from new tariffs…
  • 3:26 - 3:31
All while being called a Putin ally
who
    “is indifferent to ongoing slaughter”.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
It was the greasiest wheels since
a freshly fried batch of donuts.
  • 3:34 - 3:39
Of course media outlets are having a
    field day ripping Trump now…
About this,
  • 3:39 - 3:44
    I mean.
They’ve been having a field
day ripping him 24/7 since 2015.
  • 3:44 - 3:48
They’re casting Trump as being naive
to think he could negotiate with Putin.
  • 3:48 - 3:52
    He’s delusional, being played
    by Putin like a puppet.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
Though I’d say it was more like a
    doll
since Putin is totally a horse girl.
  • 3:56 - 4:00
It turns out Trump is finally
    waking up to Putin’s brutality!
  • 4:00 - 4:05
Even though Putin is far savvier than Trump!
But to be fair, Trump wasn’t entirely bending
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    over for Putin.
    He’s continuing
  • 4:07 - 4:12
intelligence and security assistance for Ukraine.
And he even threatened tariffs on Russian oil.
  • 4:12 - 4:16
So it’s more like he was greasing
a wheel that had a boot on it.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    He also went with extending
    sanctions on Russian ships…
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    And warned that he doesn’t
    want endless talks with Russia.
  • 4:22 - 4:26
Makes sense. Based on how often he posts
    on social media,
you can tell Trump
  • 4:26 - 4:31
hates calls and is much more of a texting guy.
But it’s pretty clear to see that since returning
  • 4:31 - 4:37
    to office,
Trump has been much more focused
on offering Russia carrots rather than sticks.
  • 4:37 - 4:42
The thing is, US presidents long before Trump
thought they could negotiate with Putin.
  • 4:42 - 4:46
Bill Clinton said that “[Putin] kept
his word in all the deals we made.”
  • 4:46 - 4:51
And George W. Bush famously said that
he saw Putin’s soul and could trust him.
  • 5:22 - 5:27
Wow, I can’t believe a guy who chose
Dick Cheney as his vice president
would
  • 5:27 - 5:31
have a hard time telling someone was
evil when looking them in the eye.
  • 5:31 - 5:37
Well, it gradually dawned on some
    people
that maybe Russia can’t be trusted.
  • 5:37 - 5:41
    Especially after they flattened Chechnya...
    Invaded Georgia…
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    Helped obliterate Syria…
    And invaded Ukraine.
  • 5:44 - 5:48
    Twice.
    Yup, Putin’s real straightforward…
right
  • 5:48 - 5:53
    into other people’s territory.
Bush gave some more detail in 2018
  • 5:53 - 5:57
    by claiming “Russia was broke”
when
he said he saw Putin’s soul.
  • 6:05 - 6:13
    “Putin changed”.
That sounds all too familiar.
Which leads us to a very important point:
Many
  • 6:13 - 6:19
Americans believe, or at least publicly
    promote, some pretty naive myths.
  • 6:19 - 6:23
One of those myths is the idea
that
    authoritarian countries will behave with
  • 6:23 - 6:28
good-faith deals in exchange for economic gain.
This line of thinking was how the West got to do
  • 6:28 - 6:31
    business with Russia…
    And China!
  • 6:31 - 6:36
    However, the US constantly underestimates
how
much of a threat these countries might
  • 6:36 - 6:42
    become.
And in doing so, the US helps
    them grow into dangerous adversaries.
  • 6:42 - 6:46
After his 2-hour call with Putin,
Trump
    told the world,
“Russia wants to do
  • 6:46 - 6:53
largescale TRADE with the United States
when this
catastrophic ‘bloodbath’ is over, and I agree.”
  • 6:53 - 6:58
“There is a tremendous opportunity for
Russia to create massive amounts of jobs
  • 6:58 - 7:04
    and wealth.
Its potential is UNLIMITED.”
    But Americans really underestimate
how
  • 7:04 - 7:09
far Russia is willing to go without the
kind of economic deals Trump is promising.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
    British commentator Konstantin
    Kisin brings up some very
  • 7:12 - 7:17
    interesting points
that help explain why.
While Americans have a culture of openness,
  • 7:17 - 7:21
    cooperation, and positivity,
they don’t have a history of being
  • 7:21 - 7:27
    conquered by powerful enemies,
mass persecution,
or extermination, like the rest of the world does.
  • 7:27 - 7:31
They’re okay with just making peace deals,
giving
other countries the benefit of the doubt,
and
  • 7:31 - 7:36
    letting bygones be bygones without
worrying that it’ll come back to bite them.
  • 7:36 - 7:40
After all, look how things turned out with
    America’s former overlords the British…
  • 7:40 - 7:43
    Its enemy Spain...
    And Germany and Japan.
  • 7:43 - 7:47
    Even Vietnam.
    They’re pretty much friends now.
  • 7:47 - 7:51
    But Russia’s different.
It was utterly devastated by foreigners like the
  • 7:51 - 7:58
    Mongols and Europeans—
most famously Napoleon and
a failed Austrian painter with a funny mustache.
  • 7:58 - 8:03
It’s had vast swathes of its population
starved, diseased, raped, and wiped out
  • 8:03 - 8:08
    for hundreds of years.
Not an excuse for Russia
to do horrible things to other countries,
but
  • 8:08 - 8:14
it is understandable why Russia feels like it
should do whatever it takes to assert power.
  • 8:14 - 8:18
    Meanwhile, the biggest conflict many
    Americans have dealt with
is finding
  • 8:18 - 8:22
a parking space at Trader Joe’s.
So Putin’s not crazy, like Trump
  • 8:22 - 8:27
    claims.
Nor has he suddenly changed his nature.
Putin has always looked at the world through a
  • 8:27 - 8:33
    cold, zero-sum lens
where anything and everything
    is acceptable.
We’re talking about a former
  • 8:33 - 8:39
KGB officer in the Soviet Union,
a communist
regime that murdered and imprisoned dissidents.
  • 8:39 - 8:43
    No matter how devastated Russia
    is,
Putin will lie, manipulate,
  • 8:43 - 8:50
and kill to get what he wants
if he believes
that’s what it takes to maintain Russian security.
  • 8:50 - 8:54
And in his eyes, maintaining influence
over Ukraine is vital for that.
  • 8:54 - 8:58
    If Trump wants a deal,
it needs to
include more than promises of economic
  • 8:58 - 9:04
    prosperity and trade.
It needs to include
    serious consequences for violating it.
  • 9:04 - 9:07
    There’s another myth—and I think
    it’s a terrible one—
that the US
  • 9:07 - 9:11
should just keep its troops within its
    borders,
and deploy them overseas only
  • 9:11 - 9:15
if the US is directly attacked.
    This idea comes from America’s
  • 9:15 - 9:20
history of never being conquered by
    another more powerful nation… yet.
  • 9:20 - 9:24
    I see you Candy Land.
I know
    you’re biding your sweet time.
  • 9:24 - 9:28
    It’s a popular stance,
especially
among those who oppose any and all
  • 9:28 - 9:32
foreign aid to Ukraine and other countries.
The assumption is that if America doesn’t
  • 9:32 - 9:38
    deploy forces abroad
or give military aid to other
    countries,
the US will be left alone in peace.
  • 9:38 - 9:42
    Basically, treat others nicely and
you'll be treated nicely in turn.
  • 9:42 - 9:47
But most countries in the real world
don’t have the luxury to live like that.
  • 9:47 - 9:50
    That’d be like saying
if you don’t help your
neighbor get rid of their rats,
then the rats
  • 9:50 - 9:56
    will leave you alone.
That’s not how rats
    work.
Especially when they’re desperate,
and
  • 9:56 - 10:00
trying to raise four teenage turtles on their own.
The US learned that the hard way
when it decided
  • 10:00 - 10:05
    in the early 20th Century
to not keep
a strong presence in the Indo-Pacific.
  • 10:05 - 10:09
Senior Fellow at The Foundation for Defense
    of Democracies
and friend of the show Cleo
  • 10:09 - 10:13
    Paskal
points out that this was
    a major strategic miscalculation.
  • 10:13 - 10:18
It allowed Imperial Japan to expand into
    the Indo-Pacific,
which eventually helped
  • 10:18 - 10:24
lead to the attack on Pearl Harbor
and a war
that cost more than 100,000 American lives.
  • 10:24 - 10:29
The US could’ve lost far less lives and
    resources
if it had the foresight to position
  • 10:29 - 10:34
    itself in the Indo-Pacific better.
Plus no
one would have ever had to suffer through
  • 10:34 - 10:39
a Michael Bay romance period piece.
It makes many think that the US could
  • 10:39 - 10:45
    have something
even worse than Pearl Harbor
    happen again
if China decides to invade Taiwan,
  • 10:45 - 10:50
as it’s already expanding throughout the world.
    And for a long time,
the US government has
  • 10:50 - 10:53
    allowed this to happen.
    Whether it’s with China
  • 10:53 - 10:58
    or Russia—
and why not throw in Iran and North
    Korea, just for funsies—
many Americans believe
  • 10:58 - 11:04
    that they can promote peace
through promises
    of economic prosperity and self-restraint.
  • 11:04 - 11:10
    But that’s exactly what authoritarians
    exploit.
The feeling that you’re in control of
  • 11:10 - 11:14
    the situation,
but they’re making you dance
    like a puppet.
  • 11:14 - 11:18
