The Vitruvian Grub Explained... Kinda... Not Really

  • 0:09 - 0:14
art it's beautiful it stopped the pokin
it has been used to tell some of the
  • 0:14 - 0:20
greatest stories ever told but today
we're going to talk about a classic the
  • 0:20 - 0:25
Vitruvian Man this work by Leonardo da
Vinci has become one of the hallmarks of
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    the Renaissance era
it symbolizes the architecture of nature
  • 0:29 - 0:35
found in the proportions of the human
body but this isn't a fucking art class
  • 0:35 - 0:39
it's a hollow night lore video so what
does the Vitruvian Man have to do with
  • 0:39 - 0:44
anything well hidden deep away within
the city of tears there's a very
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    interesting drawing called the Vitruvian
grub this is one of the biggest
  • 0:48 - 0:52
mysteries in hallo nest so what does it
    mean honestly I don't have a goddamn
  • 0:52 - 0:58
clue but hey that doesn't mean I can't
make a wildly speculative video about it
  • 0:58 - 1:05
this is the Vitruvian grub possible ties
to Isis alright so when you start
  • 1:05 - 1:09
playing hollow night for the first time
you'll probably stumble into this room
  • 1:09 - 1:13
in forgotten crossroads here you'll find
the grub father weeping over the loss of
  • 1:13 - 1:17
his children the player can find these
grubs trapped in glass jars all
  • 1:17 - 1:21
throughout the map after you find one of
his children and return to him the grub
  • 1:21 - 1:24
father will give you a reward
so yeah the grubs are just a cool side
  • 1:24 - 1:28
quest that the player can do while
playing the game but who captured the
  • 1:28 - 1:33
grubs in the first place well turns out
    was this forearmed motherfucker the
  • 1:33 - 1:37
collector the collector can be found in
the Tower of love in the city of tears
  • 1:37 - 1:41
and after beating him the player can
find a map that holds the location of
  • 1:41 - 1:46
all the remaining grubs the player has
left to find now there's a lot going on
  • 1:46 - 1:49
with this guy that we'll get to in a
second but first I wanted to talk about
  • 1:49 - 1:53
the Tower of love itself this appears to
be an abandoned location that was
  • 1:53 - 1:58
repurposed by the collector the tower of
love is hidden away only accessible from
  • 1:58 - 2:03
kingdoms edge the walls of the area are
covered with cushions and even the key
  • 2:03 - 2:07
to the areas covered in padding this
whole place gives me an Eyes Wide Shut
  • 2:07 - 2:12
vibe how in a secret elite meaning up
and engaging in lewd sexual acts
  • 2:12 - 2:16
this is all pretty speculative but I do
    appreciate the subtle world building
  • 2:16 - 2:20
    team cherry does here another
interesting piece of information is what
  • 2:20 - 2:24
the corpse of the bug holding the love
key in Queen's garden says when hit with
  • 2:24 - 2:31
the dream nail it says to long spent
together we became as one now if you
  • 2:31 - 2:35
look at this guy's eyes you can see
black streaks a feature commonly found
  • 2:35 - 2:40
on bugs that died close to the abyss
where void resides I think this means to
  • 2:40 - 2:45
tell us that the bug actually spent some
time with the collector who itself is a
  • 2:45 - 2:49
void creature how do we know that the
collectors made a void first off its
  • 2:49 - 2:54
body is all black and liquidy and goopy
when defeated it melts down into the
  • 2:54 - 2:58
floor and when hit it gives off the same
black particle effects that the siblings
  • 2:58 - 3:04
do and like the siblings the collector
does not give the player soul when hit
  • 3:04 - 3:09
then of course there's the mold found in
the workshop in the white palace this
  • 3:09 - 3:14
mold is used to create a humanoid shaped
figure with four arms this mold was used
  • 3:14 - 3:18
to create the Kings molds that guarded
the white palace the collector was
  • 3:18 - 3:21
probably created here as well even
though it might not have been
  • 3:21 - 3:24
    intentional
so yeah the collectors origins begin at
  • 3:24 - 3:29
the white palace which raises a ton of
questions why was the collector created
  • 3:29 - 3:33
it's possible that the collector was an
early attempt at creating a void
  • 3:33 - 3:37
construct gone wrong who just escaped
the white palace and travelled upwards
  • 3:37 - 3:42
into the city of tears another theory is
    that the collector was specifically
  • 3:42 - 3:46
created by the pale King to capture the
grubs at the very least there is
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    something about the collector that
separates it from other void creatures
  • 3:50 - 3:54
the collector is the most expressive of
any void creature found in the game for
  • 3:54 - 4:00
example one of the collectors dream nail
dialogues is my love my love protected
  • 4:00 - 4:05
at last this type of deep emotional
connection isn't seen in many void
  • 4:05 - 4:10
creatures other than maybe the hollow
Knight or arguably Zoo or Hornet if you
  • 4:10 - 4:14
think that there made a void as well
    also the collector doesn't respond
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    differently after the knight has
obtained the void heart which means that
  • 4:18 - 4:22
the collector must have an independently
strong well itself so what exactly is
  • 4:22 - 4:25
the collector trying to do if this is
    the case
  • 4:25 - 4:30
first let's look at the rest of its
dream no dialogue the collectors other
  • 4:30 - 4:37
two lines are a safe space for you and
you and you and it must be saved from
  • 4:37 - 4:41
these lines of dialogue it seems like
the collector is capturing grubs and
  • 4:41 - 4:46
other creatures in order to protect them
protect them from what exactly well this
  • 4:46 - 4:50
is where shit gets weird so let's say
you defeat the collector and rescue all
  • 4:50 - 4:55
the grubs cool you go to the grub father
who is eternally grateful and gives you
  • 4:55 - 5:01
the final reward the grubber flies elegy
awesome but if you choose to return to
  • 5:01 - 5:05
the grub father after resting on a bench
then you will discover that the grub
  • 5:05 - 5:10
father has actually eaten his children
now that's a fucked up shit right there
  • 5:10 - 5:14
look team cherry I don't know if the
practice of eating ones children is
  • 5:14 - 5:19
common in Australia but here in the
United States it is not so maybe the
  • 5:19 - 5:22
collector knows that the grub father was
going to eat his children and so it
  • 5:22 - 5:26
captured them as a way to keep them safe
if that was the case though the
  • 5:26 - 5:31
collector might actually be wrong even
though the grubs have been eaten you can
  • 5:31 - 5:40
still hear them inside the grub father
stomach so they're not dead yet also the
  • 5:40 - 5:44
achievement the player gets when freeing
the last grub is called metamorphosis so
  • 5:44 - 5:49
this whole thing might just be biology
the last reward given to the player is a
  • 5:49 - 5:53
charm called the grabber fly z elegy
which talks about the grubs moving on
  • 5:53 - 5:57
into the next stage of their lives so it
seems as though the grub father is
  • 5:57 - 6:02
    actually sacrificing himself and acting
as a cocoon for the grubs to transform
  • 6:02 - 6:06
into grubber flies the Gerber flies
would then burst out of the grub
  • 6:06 - 6:09
father's body which wouldn't be the
first time we saw that in hallow night
  • 6:09 - 6:15
it's all just a part of the beauty of
nature but of course the collector might
  • 6:15 - 6:18
not know this so maybe it thinks
capturing the grubs is the only way to
  • 6:18 - 6:23
protect them there is something a bit
unsettling though if you listen to the
  • 6:23 - 6:26
collector before reaching the room where
you fight him you hear some strange
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    things
  • 6:33 - 6:38
    now that's just creepy
seriously listen to it with horror music
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    playing
  • 6:42 - 6:50
not only that but you can hear the grub
gagging at one point why is it that
  • 6:50 - 6:53
these cute little creatures are involved
in one of the most fucked up plots of
  • 6:53 - 6:58
the game it's so weird so let's just say
that that is all there is to the
  • 6:58 - 7:01
collectors motive where does that lead
    the Vitruvian grub
  • 7:01 - 7:05
well the collector seems to find nature
beautiful and believes that it should be
  • 7:05 - 7:10
protected maybe the Vitruvian grub is
just a drawing the collector made to
  • 7:10 - 7:14
represent its obsession over the form of
the grub body but that's kind of a
  • 7:14 - 7:19
boring answer I think it's time we start
    speculating wildly what if there's
  • 7:19 - 7:23
    another motive behind the collectors
actions what if there's another layer
  • 7:23 - 7:28
beneath all of this what is it about the
grubs specifically that the collector is
  • 7:28 - 7:33
so infatuated with the grub flies the
elegy mentions that the charm imbues
  • 7:33 - 7:37
weapons with the holey strength now this
    is interesting
  • 7:37 - 7:41
while the grubs are actually more
powerful than we could possibly imagine
  • 7:41 - 7:45
let's look at the Vitruvian grub again
what's the deal with this symbol in the
  • 7:45 - 7:50
middle of the drawing it's not visible
on the grubs in-game what could it mean
  • 7:50 - 7:54
well the symbol shows three circles
    connected together maybe this is
  • 7:54 - 7:58
supposed to represent a Holy Trinity the
    number three has already been
  • 7:58 - 8:02
established as being an important number
in the game seeing as there are three
  • 8:02 - 8:07
dreamers required to combat the radiance
in other words this design on the grub
  • 8:07 - 8:11
stomach is telling us that the grubs do
indeed contain some sort of sacred power
  • 8:11 - 8:15
within them but what about the
surroundings of the grub in the
  • 8:15 - 8:20
Vitruvian Man drawing the man is
surrounded by a circle and a square this
  • 8:20 - 8:23
was done to show the architectural
properties of the human body when I
  • 8:23 - 8:27
think something different is going on
here first off they kind of look like
  • 8:27 - 8:34
crop circles you know the kind left by
    aliens now I don't think we're supposed
  • 8:34 - 8:38
to believe that grubs are actually
    aliens despite the compelling evidence
  • 8:38 - 8:42
that points that way but I do think this
is meant to represent how grubs might be
  • 8:42 - 8:46
otherworldly or at least very different
in nature from the rest of the bugs in
  • 8:46 - 8:50
the game but there's another interesting
thing about the design that surrounds
  • 8:50 - 8:53
the Vitruvian grub as I'm sure you've
    noticed
  • 8:53 - 8:58
there are 46 circles drawn in this
picture and that's the exact number of
  • 8:58 - 9:01
grubs that can be freed in the game what
if this drawing is some sort of
  • 9:01 - 9:05
representation of the location of the
grubs when we compare that the Truvia
  • 9:05 - 9:09
grub to the world map there's an easy
connection we can make right away these
  • 9:09 - 9:13
three dots in unison can line up with
the three grubs found in the Tower of
  • 9:13 - 9:18
love but after that it really doesn't
make any sense but I do think this
  • 9:18 - 9:22
surrounding design is telling us that
the grubs are scattered across the land
  • 9:22 - 9:27
even if the Vitruvian grub isn't a 100%
accurate map but this raises another
  • 9:27 - 9:32
question why is it that the collector
leaves the grubs in various locations
  • 9:32 - 9:36
instead of just taking them back to the
Tower of love this is a collector just
  • 9:36 - 9:39
hiding them in spots that thinks no one
will find is it because they have to be
  • 9:39 - 9:45
positioned in a certain way if so is
this by the collectors will or is the
  • 9:45 - 9:48
    collector actually following
instructions left for it maybe the
  • 9:48 - 9:52
collector was told to capture the grubs
and the Vitruvian grub is some sort of
  • 9:52 - 9:57
instruction on how to do it I suggest
this because the collectors dialog only
  • 9:57 - 10:01
points it wanting to preserve the grubs
but it just seems like more is going on
  • 10:01 - 10:06
here is it possible that the pail King
wanted the grubs captured did this holy
  • 10:06 - 10:11
power hidden within the grubs scare the
pail King is this another example of the
  • 10:11 - 10:15
pail king trying to smother out other
powerful beings if all that's the case
  • 10:15 - 10:19
then we might have just fucked
everything up by freeing them all so
  • 10:19 - 10:23
yeah is the collector just absolutely
insane and became obsessed with the
  • 10:23 - 10:28
grubs for some arbitrary reason is the
collector aware of this holy power that
  • 10:28 - 10:32
might be hidden within the grubs could
it be that the pail King is actually
  • 10:32 - 10:36
responsible for all of this is it even
possible to know the answer at this
  • 10:36 - 10:40
point whenever I think about Holland
I'll or I always end up remembering
  • 10:40 - 10:44
    Zelda maii's precept 50 maybe it's
better not to linger on mysteries for
  • 10:44 - 10:48
too long is this team Jerry's Way of
telling us not to get too worked up over
  • 10:48 - 10:53
every little bit of dialogue I mean we
craft entire theories off of characters
  • 10:53 - 10:56
turning their heads slightly for fuck's
    sake
  • 10:56 - 11:00
I think the Vitruvian grub is a really
cool mystery team cherry has added to
  • 11:00 - 11:03
    the
but maybe there is no answer for its
  • 11:03 - 11:07
existence yet and that's all I've got
let me know in the comments if I miss
  • 11:07 - 11:10
something or if you have any theories of
your own as to what's going on with all
  • 11:10 - 11:12
    this
I hope team cherry gives us more
  • 11:12 - 11:17
information about the Vitruvian grub and
upcoming content but then again I
  • 11:17 - 11:22
already feel that way about ten other
    fucking things in this game
