KIDS REACT TO 1990s COMMERCIALS: Trapper Keepers!

- Oh my gosh,
this is so old. (giggling)

♪ (cheerful music) ♪

- Any other binder can do that.

♪ (playful music) ♪

- (FBE) Today, you're going
to be reacting to this.

- Ooh.
(velcro unsticking)

It is a "Trapper Keeper" notebook.

- "Trapper Keeper" notebook.

It traps what you
keep in the folders?

- I like the velcro,
and, plus, the front is pretty cool.

- It's like a binder,
and it looks kind of old.

- I'm very confused.

Why are you giving me
a notebook?

- I'm confused. Is it old?

Is this, like,
the first binder? (giggling)

- (FBE) So this is called
a Trapper Keeper.

So Trapper Keepers were one
of the most popular school supplies

in the '70s, '80s, and '90s.

- That's why it
looks so old-school.

- Oh, my parents were
going to school during that time.

- (FBE) And they were
such a staple back in the day

that they often appear
in new shows made today

when they were set in the past.

So, for example,
we're gonna show you a photo

from Stranger Things.

- I love that show.

- (gasping and thumping table)

That's my favorite show ever!

- Hey, I can see it.

- Most people just
probably don't pay attention to it

except parents, who just like,
"Oh, yeah, I had that at one point."

- Oh, yeah, I see the little--
it says "Trapper Keeper."

- I thought that
was just a normal binder.

I didn't even notice that.

- Now everyone has a phone.

Everyone had a Trapper Keeper.

- (FBE) So now we have
some commercials to show you

from the height
of Trapper Keeper popularity.

- Okay. (giggling)

♪ (whimsical music) ♪

- "Where's your homework?"

- (student #1) The dog ate it?

- (student #2 stammering)

- (student #3) My brother--
- Oh my gosh.

This is so old. (giggling)

- (student #3) My brother's
holding it ransom.

- (chuckling)

- (student #4)
Aliens ransacked my room.

- (student #5) My printer's down.
- (chuckling)

- Really? That's just lying.

- (announcer) You won't need
excuses for losing your schoolwork

with the Trapper Keeper

and pockets keep
an amazing amount of work

organized, secure,
and right where you want it.

- Any other school folder
could do that.

- (student) It's on
a spaceship to Pluto.

- Oh my gosh!

It's not that big of a deal.

- (girl) Hi, Jeffrey.

- (Jeffrey) How'd you find me?
- (girl) Easy.

I just followed your notes.
- (giggling)

- (Jeffrey) Guess
I'm a loose leaf loser.

- (girl) You need
a Mead Trapper Keeper.

- Oh, I have so--
I need a Trapper Keeper!

- (girl) I've got a Trapper
for every subject,

and the Trapper Keeper
holds them all.

- (Jeffrey) Neat!
- (girl) Really neat.

With this velcro closure and--
- The velcro.

- (announcer) The Trapper
and Trapper Keeper from Mead.

- (girl) Whoa!
- That "whoa!" (giggling)

- Yeah, he needs to buy one.
Look at all that stuff.

- (Jeffrey) You think Mead
makes a locker sized Trapper Keeper?

- Wow, he has a lot
of homework he has to finish,

that's for sure.

- Now they don't even advertise
notebooks or stuff like that.

- Now that I think about it,
you really don't see

advertisements for binders
or a paper clip

or something like that anymore.

Hmmm, so it's weird to think
that that would get

a lot of advertisement.

- (FBE) So for several years
in the past,

they would sell over
$100 million worth of folders

and notebooks a year--
almost every kid had one.

- What? That's a lot of money.

- I just don't understand
why they were so popular

because I feel like
any other folder could do that.

- Everyone had it. That's so weird.

Nowadays, everyone
has a different type of binder.

- (FBE) Are there school supplies
today that are that popular

that everyone has one?
- I don't think so.

- Lead pencils because
if you don't have

lead pencils in school,
you're not cool.

- Gel pens.

In my class, gel pens
are the only thing everybody wanted.

- That's crazy to think
almost everyone in the school

has a Trapper Keeper.

- (FBE) They usually had a theme,
cool colors, or sometimes

popular cartoons, TV shows,
or video games on them.

So after hearing about this,
can you see why kids

would've liked them so much?
- No.

I mean... (giggling)
it's such a big deal over a notebook.

- I don't understand
why they would get excited.

Like, it's not that big of a deal.

It's just a binder
and a bunch of folders together.

Like, you could make
that on your own.

- Yes, because they
don't have to be carrying around

all these papers.

- If it had stuff
that they really liked,

stuff from TV,
then if they liked it a lot,

and they could finally show it off,
that's kind of cool.

- If it's just something to design
that someone doesn't like,

people won't buy it at all,
but since there's a lot of variety

of a design,
a lot of people will buy it.

- With a cartoon and stuff,
you could have

a whole different one
than your friend and be like,

"Oh, I have this Trapper Keeper.

Oh, this person
has this Trapper Keeper.

That one is so cool.
I want that one."

- I wouldn't really react
that big to it

because, nowadays,
everything is so cool,

but if I was in that time,
that would probably be

a really big thing because
they didn't have stuff like that.

- (FBE) So Trapper Keepers
took a little break for a while,

however, they
came back a few times,

notably in 2014.
- Really?

- They came back? Wow.

- (FBE) So we're
actually going to show you

a more recent commercial
for the Trapper Keeper.

- Okay, I'm excited.

♪ (upbeat music) ♪

- All those people
are me during class.

- This is so weird to think
they had a comeback.

(tapping pencil rhythmically)

(drumming with pencils)

- Oh, there it is.
That's the Trapper Keeper.

(record scratching)

- Whoa, where'd you get that?!

- Whoa.

- Oh my gosh.

- (girl) I can trap almost anything
in my Trapper Keeper.

- (chuckling)

- (girl) One, two, three--
- That's weird.

♪ (cheerful music) ♪

- (kid) Oh, snap!
Trapper Keeper's back.

Plus, the new Snapper Trapper
easily snaps in and out

of three ring binders.

- Wait, did they snap out before?

- (kid) So strong,
you can trap almost anything.

- Okay, that's kind of cool.

- Any other binder can do that.

I honestly just don't understand
why it's so popular.

- The idea is cool
of the Trapper Keeper

because everything is in there,
and it doesn't fall out,

but, come on, a normal binder
can do that too.

- I kind of want one for school.

Where do they sell those?

- (FBE) So, finally,
when you go back to school

in the fall, would
you want a Trapper Keeper?

- No, I can just get a binder.

A normal three inch binder.

- No, I would probably want
a binder instead.

- Probably.

With the cool snapping one!

- Yeah, it seems pretty cool.

You have-- you can hold
so much stuff in it

and I'm very disorganized,
so it would probably help me.

- Yes, yes, yes.

I'm going into 4th grade,
and in 4th grade,

you have to do
this mission project.

It's a lot of paperwork,
and you have to take it all home,

and I can't be like,
"Paper, don't fly out!

I want to show my mom."

I'll have a Trapper Keeper,
I'll be like...

- If I do get a new binder,
I will look for a Trapper Keeper

just to see if it's there,
and if it is there, then why not?
