a Trapper Keeper.

So Trapper Keepers were one
of the most popular school supplies

in the '70s, '80s, and '90s.

- That's why it
looks so old-school.

- Oh, my parents were
going to school during that time.

- (FBE) And they were
such a staple back in the day

that they often appear
in new shows made today

when they were set in the past.

So, for example,
we're gonna show you a photo

advertisements for binders
or a paper clip

or something like that anymore.

Hmmm, so it's weird to think
that that would get

a lot of advertisement.

in the past,

they would sell over
$100 million worth of folders

and notebooks a year--
almost every kid had one.

- What? That's a lot of money.

- I just don't understand
why they were so popular

because I feel like
any other folder could do that.

- Everyone had it. That's so weird.

Nowadays, everyone
has a different type of binder.

- (FBE) Are there school supplies
today that are that popular

that everyone has one?
- I don't think so.

- Lead pencils because
if you don't have
-
lead pencils in school,
you're not cool.

- Gel pens.
-
In my class, gel pens
are the only thing everybody wanted.

- That's crazy to think
almost everyone in the school
-
has a Trapper Keeper.
-
- (FBE) They usually had a theme,
cool colors, or sometimes
-
popular cartoons, TV shows,
or video games on them.
-
So after hearing about this,
can you see why kids
-
would've liked them so much?
- No.
-
I mean... (giggling)
it's such a big deal over a notebook.
-
- I don't understand
why they would get excited.
-
Like, it's not that big of a deal.
-
It's just a binder
and a bunch of folders together.
-
Like, you could make
that on your own.
-
- Yes, because they
don't have to be carrying around
-
all these papers.
-
- If it had stuff
that they really liked,
-
stuff from TV,
then if they liked it a lot,
-
and they could finally show it off,
that's kind of cool.
-
- If it's just something to design
that someone doesn't like,
-
people won't buy it at all,
but since there's a lot of variety
-
of a design,
a lot of people will buy it.
-
- With a cartoon and stuff,
you could have
-
a whole different one
than your friend and be like,
-
"Oh, I have this Trapper Keeper.
-
Oh, this person
has this Trapper Keeper.
-
That one is so cool.
I want that one."

- I wouldn't really react
that big to it
-
because, nowadays,
everything is so cool,
-
but if I was in that time,
that would probably be
-
a really big thing because
they didn't have stuff like that.

- (FBE) So Trapper Keepers
took a little break for a while,
-
however, they
came back a few times,
-
notably in 2014.
- Really?

- They came back? Wow.
-
- (FBE) So we're
actually going to show you

for the Trapper Keeper.

can do that too.

when you go back to school

and you have to take it all home,
