You're spending too much | Jordon Cox | TEDxChelmsford

  • 0:18 - 0:19
    What if I told you
  • 0:19 - 0:24
that you can get £35 worth
of supermarket shopping for just £9?
  • 0:25 - 0:29
What if I told you that you could save
    hundreds or even thousands,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    just by changing your mindset
    when it comes to spending?
  • 0:33 - 0:38
What if I told you that flying home
could be cheaper than a one-way train?
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    Believe it or not,
all of those things are true,
  • 0:42 - 0:45
and if you are looking for
    a great money workout,
  • 0:45 - 0:48
then I will be your trainer today.
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    No breaks.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    When it comes to money,
    and especially saving it,
  • 0:52 - 0:55
I've had many years of experience.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
You might've seen back in January of 2016,
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    I flew home from Sheffield
    to Essex via Berlin,
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    because it was £8 cheaper
    than taking the train.
  • 1:06 - 1:11
I even got £600 worth of supermarket
shopping and only paid 4p for it.
  • 1:13 - 1:19
    When it comes to couponing,
there are so many ways you can save money,
  • 1:19 - 1:23
but I see so many people
    posting on Facebook saying,
  • 1:23 - 1:27
"Got no money left," or "Oh, well,
    that's me skimmed for the next month;
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    # broke #nomomoney #lol."
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    (Laughter)
  • 1:30 - 1:35
But why is running out of money
    in any context so comical?
  • 1:35 - 1:39
    You wouldn't see
    "house's been repossessed #lol."
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    (Laughter)
  • 1:40 - 1:42
So why even gets to the first stage?
  • 1:42 - 1:44
When taking a look at your spending,
  • 1:44 - 1:48
    making small adjustments
    can make a massive difference.
  • 1:49 - 1:52
There're ways you can save money
on all of your favorite brands
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    that you buy everyday.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    How do you do that?
  • 1:56 - 2:01
    By using coupons, loyalty schemes,
    mobile apps, and cashback sites.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    Despite what you might think,
it doesn't have to be time-consuming,
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    and you can save hundreds,
    or even thousands.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    When it comes to couponing,
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    if you go onto
    Pringles Facebook page right now,
  • 2:15 - 2:17
you can print out a coupon for a free tin.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    Simple as that.
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    #lol.
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    (Laughter)
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    Also, if you go into
    Optiwell website right now,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
they are giving away a free yogurt drink.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
All you have to do is print it out.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
There're hundreds of coupons for you
to print out right now from online,
  • 2:33 - 2:37
and all you need to do
    is Google the word coupons.
  • 2:37 - 2:42
If you print out the right ones,
you can get a £35 shop and only pay £9,
  • 2:42 - 2:47
    including branding items
such as Ariel, Finish, and Pringles.
  • 2:47 - 2:52
    They are all big brands,
and it's a fifth of the price.
  • 2:53 - 2:54
    Even coupons -
  • 2:54 - 2:58
if you've got one pound of coupon,
you can use them on sales.
  • 2:58 - 3:01
If you use a one-pound of coupon
on the products on sale at one pound,
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    it makes it free;
    there's no questions asked.
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    Who here likes Starbucks?
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    Well, guess what?
You can save money on that.
  • 3:11 - 3:16
If you sign up to their loyalty app,
every 15th coffee you buy will be free.
  • 3:17 - 3:18
That may not sound like much,
  • 3:18 - 3:23
but if you buy a Starbucks
every single weekday that costs 4 pounds,
  • 3:23 - 3:27
    that's £70 a year you're saving,
just for signing up to an app.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    Speaking of apps, there're
mobile apps on your phone now
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    which save you money
    on your supermarket shopping.
  • 3:33 - 3:37
    Apps like Shoppertise, CheckoutSmart
    will give you money back
  • 3:37 - 3:40
just by taking a photo of your receipt.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    There're so much on there
    that people buy weekly,
  • 3:43 - 3:46
    and there're hundreds of pounds
    worth of free stuff.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    I'm pretty sure everyone here
    has bought online as well.
  • 3:49 - 3:53
    You know I'm going to say;
you can save money on that, too.
  • 3:53 - 3:57
If you go onto cashback websites,
    such as TopCashback and Quidco,
  • 3:57 - 4:00
they will give you a percentage back
    of what you spend,
  • 4:00 - 4:05
on pretty much anything online -
    car insurance, hotels, clothes.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
You can all claim cashback on it,
and it's only a minute more worth of work,
  • 4:09 - 4:12
    by clicking through their website.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
That is just the tip of the iceberg
    when it comes to money-saving,
  • 4:15 - 4:17
and there're so many other ways
    you can save money.
  • 4:17 - 4:18
    For example,
  • 4:18 - 4:22
if you're going out to a restaurant,
have a look for restaurant vouchers.
  • 4:22 - 4:27
If you really love a brand,
why not send them a birthday card?
  • 4:27 - 4:29
Sounds crazy, but I did that last week,
  • 4:29 - 4:33
    and I've got £20 worth
of coupons for a 10p card.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
If you are ever in the High Street,
why not have a little haggle?
  • 4:37 - 4:39
The worst they can do is say no.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
If you take on board those tips,
    I guarantee you'll see
  • 4:43 - 4:46
a positive difference to your budget
    by hundreds of pounds.
  • 4:46 - 4:50
    But you have the ability
    to turn that into thousands.
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    If you're not bothered
    by what brands you buy,
  • 4:52 - 4:55
you can turn it into thousands,
  • 4:55 - 4:58
And it's all by a simple change
    to your mindset;
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    just by not buying
    that one Starbucks coffee
  • 5:00 - 5:03
every single weekday that costs £4,
  • 5:03 - 5:06
    that's £1,040 a year you'll be saving.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    Think about what that money
    could do for you.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
I'm not saying you can't treat yourself,
  • 5:12 - 5:15
    but you can always buy
    a 500-gram jar of coffee
  • 5:15 - 5:17
and fill up a travel mug.
  • 5:17 - 5:21
    See? Simple change, huge savings.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
Let's have a look at a bigger picture
  • 5:24 - 5:27
of how changing the big spending
    of your non-essentials
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    into easy cheaper resolutions
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    can seriously help your budget.
  • 5:32 - 5:33
    This is Sarah.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
But Sarah is not very happy.
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    Why?
  • 5:37 - 5:42
    Although she earns
    £2,000 a month after tax,
  • 5:42 - 5:43
    all of her expenditure,
  • 5:43 - 5:47
    it means she's just left
    with £30 each month.
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    Not much to save with.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
But if you look at what she is spending,
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    there're some things
    that are a bit questionable.
  • 5:53 - 5:59
If you change those into easy, cheaper
    resolutions, she could save thousands.
  • 6:00 - 6:03
    Taking the first example: buy
a £4 Starbucks every single weekday.
  • 6:03 - 6:08
If you change that into buying
    a jar of coffee, that's only £4 a month.
  • 6:08 - 6:12
You can see what that does
to her money left over each month.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    [£113 left over each month]
  • 6:14 - 6:18
    She has a takeaway
    every weekday, a bit much,
  • 6:18 - 6:24
But if she changes that to every Friday,
    that's only £20 pounds a month.
  • 6:24 - 6:28
You can see where this is going -
    her money is adding up.
  • 6:28 - 6:33
She spends £150 on working lunch,
    every single month.
  • 6:33 - 6:38
    If she changes that,
and only has a pack lunch every day,
  • 6:38 - 6:43
it's a little bit more work,
but she's saving £125 each month.
  • 6:43 - 6:45
And that adds on to her monthly total.
  • 6:45 - 6:51
    It's gone from £30 to £326,
    just for three changes.
  • 6:51 - 6:55
    And lastly, she spends
    £125 on shoes and clothes.
  • 6:55 - 6:57
    As a man I don't understand that
  • 6:57 - 6:58
    (Laughter)
  • 6:58 - 7:02
but if she can change that
and only spend it on sales -
  • 7:02 - 7:04
so she spends £50 a month.
  • 7:04 - 7:08
You can see what that does
    to her monthly leftovers.
  • 7:08 - 7:14
She now has £401 left over each month
    from four simple changes.
  • 7:14 - 7:16
If you put that back in,
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    she's still getting
    everything she used to have.
  • 7:22 - 7:26
    She's still getting her coffee,
her takeaway, her lunch, her clothes,
  • 7:26 - 7:31
but now she's got £370 more,
    just for those changes.
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    Now she's happier.
  • 7:34 - 7:37
    If you look at that
    with a 'before' and 'after':
  • 7:37 - 7:43
    Before, she was putting away
    £360 every year; now it's nearly £5,000,
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    and that's without coupons.
  • 7:45 - 7:50
    Simple changes to your budget
    can mean huge savings.
  • 7:51 - 7:55
I'm sure every single person in here
    has something in their spending
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    they can cut back on.
  • 7:57 - 7:58
    Me?
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    I'm quite lazy so I spend £3
  • 8:00 - 8:02
on return bus to the station
    every morning.
  • 8:02 - 8:04
    But in this nice weather,
  • 8:04 - 8:08
I could cycle to the station
    and paddle my bike up.
  • 8:08 - 8:12
    That's £15 a week,
and £800 if you did it all year.
  • 8:13 - 8:18
So when you leave here today, have a think
about what you're spending your money on,
  • 8:18 - 8:20
    where that money is going,
  • 8:20 - 8:22
and if you can make any small changes
  • 8:22 - 8:26
to give you that extra cash injection
    throughout the whole year.
  • 8:27 - 8:31
When that money goes to good use, I'll
be looking out for your Facebook post,
  • 8:31 - 8:35
    "Just booked a holiday
with the money I've saved. #lol."
  • 8:35 - 8:36
    (Laughter)
  • 8:36 - 8:37
    Thank you.
  • 8:37 - 8:38
    (Applause)
