Sri Amma Bhagavan: Phases of Life

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    You are here basically
  • 0:03 - 0:05
    to enjoy yourselves.
  • 0:05 - 0:08
Why should the Universe exist at all?
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    Have you not seen
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    Nataraja’s [Shiva’s] dance?
  • 0:12 - 0:14
He is merely dancing isn't it?
  • 0:15 - 0:17
It is the dance of creation.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    He is simply celebrating life.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
So each one has to find out
  • 0:22 - 0:25
    how to celebrate this life.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    What comes your way,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    accept it and enjoy it.
  • 0:29 - 0:32
You have to create what you want.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
Life could be divided into 4 phases.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
In the first phase of life,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    you are expected
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    to acquire knowledge
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    and maintain your body
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    healthy and strong.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    In this phase of life,
  • 0:45 - 0:48
you must be focused on education,
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    acquiring skills
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    and preparing of the future.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    In the second phase,
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    you must acquire wealth,
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    get married, have children,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    perform your responsibilities
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    towards your family,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    enjoy the world
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    and fulfill your desires.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    In the third phase,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
if you are really fulfilled in your life,
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    cravings would have ceased.
  • 1:11 - 1:12
    In this phase,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
you could be with your family,
  • 1:14 - 1:17
but should feel detached from your family.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    You must serve the world.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
You must be concerned about people,
  • 1:22 - 1:25
but nothing personal should be there.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
In the Last and final phase of your life
  • 1:28 - 1:31
you should not be attached to the world.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
This is the phase in which you seek liberation.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    You cannot just continue
  • 1:37 - 1:39
in the first phase of life
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    because
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    it will soon become meaningless.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    Therefore you must move on
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    to the second phase
  • 1:46 - 1:50
and embrace its pleasures and pains.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
This too will soon lose meaning
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    and therefore you move on
  • 1:55 - 1:57
to the third phase of serving the people.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    This too will ultimately
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    stop giving satisfaction.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
It is then that you move on
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    to liberation.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    Hopefully if you are awakened,
  • 2:07 - 2:09
the same mountains, the same stars
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    you saw earlier
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    would look very different.
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    You could enjoy the world
  • 2:15 - 2:17
and simply pass away from this world.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
This is the game of life.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    But on the other hand,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
you are taking it very seriously.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
There must be liberation from work.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
It does not mean not doing work,
  • 2:30 - 2:32
You don't see it as work anymore.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    You see it as play.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    So you must see everything
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    as a game,
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    you must know
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    everything is a passing phase,
  • 2:42 - 2:45
everything will come to an end soon
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    because there is nothing permanent.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    Order will move into disorder,
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    disorder will move into order.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    Weak man may become strong,
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    strong man could become weak.
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    Intelligent people may become unintelligent,
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    unintelligent may become intelligent.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    Love could become hate,
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    hate could become love.
  • 3:08 - 3:11
This is the law of the Universe.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    You cannot stop these things.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
So, you have to accept them.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    If you accept them,
  • 3:17 - 3:19
    you will start enjoying life.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
You will be playing with it.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
That is the thrill of living.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    Everything ultimately
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    is like the onion,
  • 3:27 - 3:29
if you go on peeling the onion,
  • 3:29 - 3:31
you'll find there is nothing in the end.
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    Similarly,
  • 3:32 - 3:35
if you go on peeling life's experiences,
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    consciousness, God, or anything,
  • 3:38 - 3:40
in the end, you would feel
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    there is nothing but silence.
  • 3:42 - 3:45
Life is a mystery to be lived,
  • 3:45 - 3:49
not a riddle to be solved or understood.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
That is all there is to it.
  • 3:51 - 3:54
All things emerge from that silence,
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    and return to that silence.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    You too will eventually
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    merge into that silence,
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    from which you emerged
  • 4:04 -
    in the first instance.
