Sanctification is Not Passive - Tim Conway

  • 0:01 - 0:08
The "put off" is not passive.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    But you know what?
  • 0:10 - 0:13
We can act like it is.
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    And this can be one
    of the greatest killers
  • 0:17 - 0:20
to sanctification that we can encounter,
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    when we deal with sanctification
  • 0:23 - 0:28
    as though it is passive.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
I want to be clear about something.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    Putting off the old man
  • 0:33 - 0:36
is something that Paul is telling
  • 0:36 - 0:42
    the Colossians and the
    Ephesians that they do.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
Oh, I know it's past tense
    with the Colossians,
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    but it's something they did.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
Putting off these old man-ish ways
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    are something they must do.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
It is something he is appealing to them.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
It's not something done to us.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
It's not something done for us.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
It is specifically: you are to put away.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    You are to put off.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    That's the language of Scripture.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    Put off the old man.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
Put away falsehood, put away bitterness,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
put away wrath, put away anger.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
And you know what Paul never says here?
  • 1:16 - 1:18
Well, what you really need to do
  • 1:18 - 1:21
    is pray about it.
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    What you really need
to do is fast about it
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    or seek counsel over it.
  • 1:25 - 1:32
Now look, you need to hear me right.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
    You say, he's telling us
    not to pray about this,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    not to fast about this.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
I always knew. I always knew he had error.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    There it is.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    I knew something was wrong.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
Listen, you know as well as I do
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    Scripture talks about
    praying without ceasing.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
But you need to listen to me
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    and you need to hear
not what I'm saying so much
  • 1:55 - 1:58
as hear what Paul is saying.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
Far too often through the years
  • 2:01 - 2:05
as I have been a pastor in this church,
  • 2:05 - 2:09
people use prayer as a crutch
  • 2:09 - 2:12
in a bad way and in a wrong way.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
I can tell you I have seen people
  • 2:16 - 2:20
make horrible decisions in their life.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
But they say, "Well, I prayed about it."
  • 2:23 - 2:29
    As though that just certifies
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    that what they're
    doing has God's approval.
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    "I prayed about it."
  • 2:33 - 2:36
As though you can't touch me now.
  • 2:36 - 2:42
    No counsel that is against
    this is going to stand
  • 2:42 - 2:45
    because I prayed about this.
  • 2:45 - 2:52
    That's one way I've
    seen prayer used wrongly.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    But there's another way.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
You've got some sin in your life.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    There's something wrong.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
And you say, well, I know
    that I have this thing
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    in my life that's wrong
  • 3:06 - 3:07
    and it's dishonoring to God.
  • 3:07 - 3:11
And I'm asking God to take it away.
  • 3:11 - 3:17
And you see, that sounds very... what?
  • 3:17 - 3:21
    Christian, noble.
  • 3:21 - 3:26
And I'll tell you so often
it is nothing but false piety.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    "Well, I'm praying about
    this sin in my life."
  • 3:28 - 3:33
And you know what Paul would say?
  • 3:33 - 3:35
You go ahead and pray about that,
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    but if you're ever going
    to live a sanctified life,
  • 3:38 - 3:39
you better come to the place
  • 3:39 - 3:41
where you put that off yourself.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    (incomplete thought)
  • 3:43 - 3:44
    You know what happens.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
Somebody prays - "I prayed about it."
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    And now they sit there.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    "I prayed about that bitterness."
"I prayed about that lack of forgiveness."
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    "I prayed about my laziness."
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    I prayed about this,
    that, and the other thing.
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    And then you sit there.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
And I know what you're waiting for.
  • 4:00 - 4:05
You're waiting for this feeling of power.
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    Ahhh...
  • 4:06 - 4:08
You know, you wake up and it's like
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    now you're this spiritual superman
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    and you feel it coursing
    through your veins.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
And it's like power's just exuding,
  • 4:16 - 4:18
like you're going to see some light
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    emanating from your face
when you look in the mirror.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    But that's how we are.
  • 4:23 - 4:24
Oh, I'm going to feel this.
  • 4:24 - 4:31
    Paul says you might
    want to examine v. 17-32.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
    You'll notice I'm not really
    charging the people
  • 4:35 - 4:37
that they need to pray more.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
Where do you see prayer at all there?
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    Paul doesn't tell you to
    pray about dishonesty
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    or bitterness or laziness.
  • 4:43 - 4:47
    Does he?
  • 4:47 - 4:48
    He doesn't!
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    You know what? He
    goes straight to the point.
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    And he says, you, Christian,
  • 4:52 - 4:56
need to get that out of your life.
  • 4:56 - 5:00
    Period.
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    Get on with it, man.
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    That's what Paul is saying.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
Paul doesn't say to the Ephesians:
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    Well, you have certain
    people in your church
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    with old man-ish tendencies.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    Some of you aren't speaking
    truth to one another.
  • 5:13 - 5:14
Some of you are given to sinful anger.
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    Some are letting the sun
    go down on their anger.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
Some are giving advantage to the devil.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
Some of you are not laboring
    very diligently in giving.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
Some of you are grieving the Holy Spirit.
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    Some are bitter and slanderous.
  • 5:25 - 5:27
He doesn't tell them to go start
  • 5:27 - 5:30
a special Thursday evening prayer meeting.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
You know what he tells them?
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    You put that off.
  • 5:35 - 5:37
    Stop it.
  • 5:37 - 5:42
Oh! That doesn't sound very spiritual.
  • 5:42 - 5:47
    Having Thursday night prayer
    meeting sounds spiritual.
  • 5:47 - 5:51
Yeah, but you come back a year later,
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    and who are the people
    that are running well?
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    Who are the people that
    are the godly examples?
  • 5:56 - 5:59
They're the ones that stood up
    and looked their sin face-to-face
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    and said, "You're coming off."
  • 6:01 - 6:02
And you go to battle against it.
  • 6:02 - 6:05
Versus the guy that has the
    prayer meeting every Thursday night.
  • 6:05 - 6:07
And a year later, he's just as pathetic
  • 6:07 - 6:09
and wrapped up in his sin as ever.
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    Why? (incomplete thought)
  • 6:11 - 6:14
    It's like here's God.
  • 6:14 - 6:18
God's saying to you: Take it off.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
And you say, "Help me take it off."
  • 6:20 - 6:23
And He says Paul's under inspiration here.
  • 6:23 - 6:24
    Take it off.
  • 6:24 - 6:26
"Would You please help me to take it off?"
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    Take it off!
  • 6:28 - 6:31
    Can you imagine if your
    child was doing that?
  • 6:31 - 6:32
    What would you do?
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    Most parents would eventually
    become frustrated with that
  • 6:35 - 6:39
and they'd take the child as
    rebelling and spank them.
  • 6:39 - 6:41
If you as a parent say to your child,
  • 6:41 - 6:45
"Take that shirt off right now."
  • 6:45 - 6:46
"Would you help me to take it off?"
  • 6:46 - 6:49
You have arms. You can take that off.
  • 6:49 - 6:52
You're equipped to take that off.
  • 6:52 - 6:55
"Oh, but I need power to take this off."
  • 6:55 - 6:57
"I need help to take this off."
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    Take it off!
  • 7:00 - 7:04
But you see, we feel so pious and so holy
  • 7:04 - 7:06
and so, oh, you know, I'm a man of prayer.
  • 7:06 - 7:08
I pray about that sin all the time.
  • 7:08 - 7:10
    Yeah, how long have you
    been praying for it?
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    The last twenty years?
Why do you still have it?
  • 7:12 - 7:14
Because you never took it off.
  • 7:14 - 7:16
You see, that's the way Paul's talking.
  • 7:16 - 7:20
We need to come face-to-face with this.
  • 7:20 - 7:26
    There's something that's
definitely active on your part -
  • 7:26 - 7:27
    almost aggressive.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    There's a violence about this.
  • 7:29 - 7:30
    And there ought to be.
  • 7:30 - 7:33
    There's a lot of procrastination.
  • 7:33 - 7:35
There's a lot of false piety.
  • 7:35 - 7:38
    We get people who struggle
    with the same thing
  • 7:38 - 7:40
    over and over and over.
  • 7:40 - 7:43
They pray. They ask others to pray.
  • 7:43 - 7:47
    But Paul comes along
    and simply tells them:
  • 7:47 - 7:49
    Stop.
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    Are you a thief?
  • 7:51 - 7:57
Stop. And work with your hands and give.
  • 7:57 - 7:59
    Are you grieving the Spirit?
  • 7:59 - 8:01
    Stop it.
  • 8:01 - 8:03
Are you bitter? Are you unforgiving?
  • 8:03 - 8:06
    Put it off.
  • 8:06 - 8:11
    Quit doing that.
  • 8:11 - 8:14
    Stop acting like a baby.
  • 8:14 - 8:16
Because the truth is you're not a baby.
  • 8:16 - 8:18
You know what the truth is?
    You're God's man.
  • 8:18 - 8:21
    You're God's woman.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
And he's telling us to act like it.
  • 8:23 - 8:25
And I know you're going to declare to me.
  • 8:25 - 8:28
    Oh, I'm so weak...
  • 8:28 - 8:30
    I'm so frail.
  • 8:30 - 8:32
    I'm too pathetic, too inexperienced,
  • 8:32 - 8:35
too newly saved, too dark a season.
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    My righteousness's are filthy rags.
  • 8:37 - 8:42
My heart's deceitful. No one's good.
  • 8:42 - 8:46
    What's the answer to this?
  • 8:46 - 8:49
You're a new creation in Christ.
  • 8:49 - 8:52
    Old things are passed away.
  • 8:52 - 8:57
If by the Spirit, you put to death
    the deeds of the body,
  • 8:57 - 8:59
    you will live.
  • 8:59 - 9:00
If you live according to the flesh,
  • 9:00 - 9:02
    you're going to die.
  • 9:02 - 9:04
    Let me ask you this:
  • 9:04 - 9:05
Are you a Christian? You say yes.
  • 9:05 - 9:09
Does Scripture teach that if you're
a Christian, you have the Holy Spirit?
  • 9:09 - 9:11
    You say yes.
  • 9:11 - 9:12
    Case closed.
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    You have the Holy Spirit.
  • 9:14 - 9:17
By the Holy Spirit, you put to death
  • 9:17 - 9:19
    the deeds of the body.
  • 9:19 - 9:22
    This excerpt was taken
    from the full sermon:
