Learn ASL in 31 Days: Day 24:: Sentence Structure

  • 0:51 - 0:56
OK. So ... we're gonna do sentence order.
  • 0:56 - 1:02
And, um, as you know, Sign Language
    isn't just ...
  • 1:02 - 1:04
going along with English. Sign Language,
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    American Sign Language,
    is its own language, OK?
  • 1:07 - 1:11
And so therefore it would have
    its own grammar rules.
  • 1:11 - 1:17
So for your sentences, there's two different
ways you can order your sentences.
  • 1:17 - 1:23
The first one is time plus topic
    plus comment,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
and the second one is just
    topic plus comment.
  • 1:29 - 1:34
So you go in that order: time, topic, and
then your comment about that topic.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
So I'll give you an example:
so in English I would say,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    I'm going to the store.
  • 1:39 - 1:45
In SIgn Language I would say,
    Store, go, I. OK?
  • 1:45 - 1:50
Or you could say I, store go I,
    and that's topic, comment.
  • 1:50 - 1:55
The topic is store, what's the comment?
    I'm going.
  • 1:55 - 2:01
    And I say I because that's me, it's not
her, it's not Dad, it's not ... whatever.
  • 2:01 - 2:10
It's me. So, Store go I. Or if you want to
emphasize, you go, I store go I. 'Kay?
  • 2:10 - 2:16
Another example is, an English sentence:
    I enjoy reading.
  • 2:16 - 2:22
So you put your topic first, so the topic
    would be reading, so Read.
  • 2:22 - 2:26
    I enjoy is your comment.
[baby can be heard cooing in background]
  • 2:26 - 2:33
'Kay? Um ... OK, so now we'll do time
    plus topic plus comment.
  • 2:33 - 2:38
    So here's an English sentence:
She's going to the hospital tomorrow.
  • 2:38 - 2:45
So your time would be tomorrow,
and your topic would be hospital,
  • 2:45 - 2:49
and your comment is she go.
  • 2:49 - 2:54
So, all together you go, Tomorrow
    hospital she go.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
Another way you can do it, um,
a lot of times in ASL,
  • 2:58 - 3:01
if we want to emphasize a point,
    we'll repeat that sign,
  • 3:01 - 3:07
sort of like how we did I store go I,
    or She store go she.
  • 3:07 - 3:16
Um, if you want to emphasize the time --
so, Tomorrow hospital she go will.
  • 3:16 - 3:22
And a lot of times, um, and I know
    we've talked about this throughout,
  • 3:22 - 3:24
and later on after the 31 Day series
    is over
  • 3:24 - 3:28
I'll be doing more videos about facial
    expressions and your body language
  • 3:28 - 3:33
    that accompany the signs,
    because those are vital, OK?
  • 3:33 - 3:40
A lot of times you'll see people nodding
    to emphasize a point.
  • 3:40 - 3:46
Like when I did Read I enjoy:
    Read -- I enjoy.
  • 3:46 - 3:51
    I'm nodding, slight smile,
    Read I enjoy.
  • 3:51 - 3:55
    Tomorrow she wa --
    I'm messin' it up.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    Tomorrow hospital she go will.
  • 3:58 - 4:03
    See, I'm nodding to confirm.
    She's gonna go, OK?
  • 4:03 - 4:07
Um, let's see. Another English sentence
    for time-topic-comment:
  • 4:07 - 4:10
Uh, let's see. We went dancing last night.
  • 4:10 - 4:19
So the time is last night,
    the topic is dancing,
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    and then the comment is,
    we went, right?
  • 4:22 - 4:27
So we -- so let's just say, us three.
Me and my two friends went.
  • 4:27 - 4:35
We finish go. And finish is how
you make things past tense as well.
  • 4:35 - 4:43
So you finish jump, y'know, for jumped.
    So finish go is went.
  • 4:43 - 4:46
And also, I mean you could, technically
    you could just say,
  • 4:46 - 4:51
Last night dancing we three go,
    and that would be correct.
  • 4:51 - 4:56
To emphasize that you already did it,
    you would go,
  • 4:56 - 5:02
Last night dancing we three finish go.
  • 5:02 - 5:05
And you don't go FINISH like
    you're a child or whatever.
  • 5:05 - 5:09
    Finish go. Real quick. OK?
  • 5:09 - 5:11
Um, so I'll review those real quick.
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    So we'll do the topic-comment
    sentences first,
  • 5:14 - 5:18
and then I'll do the time-topic-comment
sentences, and then on my blog --
  • 5:18 - 5:23
the link will be down in the description
and I'll probably have it on the video too
  • 5:23 - 5:28
-- but I'll have a post that accompanies
this that explains it a little bit more,
  • 5:28 - 5:31
and will give you some practice sentences,
  • 5:31 - 5:36
so you can practice converting sentences
    from English into Sign Language,
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    and then Sign Language sentences
    into English sentences,
  • 5:39 - 5:43
so that you can kind of, um,
    become more comfortable with that.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
And we'll go over this with time, OK?
  • 5:45 - 5:49
So here, let's do review sentences to see
if you remember what I'm saying, OK?
  • 6:12 - 6:15
OK! That was a fast, quick, short lesson.
  • 6:15 - 6:20
So remember, go to the post --
    there's a link --
  • 6:20 - 6:23
and you'll get more practice sentences
    because you'll need to practice.
  • 6:23 - 6:27
It's definitely kind of tricky to get
    your head wrapped around
  • 6:27 - 6:32
    changing from English order to
    American Sign Language order.
  • 6:32 - 6:38
And the fun thing is, is you don't have to
do the ams and the to bes,
  • 6:38 - 6:43
    and the haves and stuff.
All that's much more simple, OK?
  • 6:43 - 6:48
So you don't go I am going to the store.
  • 6:48 - 6:53
    That's Signed Exact English, SEE,
which is a whole 'nother topic,
  • 6:53 - 6:58
but you don't have to sign that in
    Sign Language, which is lovely.
  • 6:58 - 7:02
You just say Store go I. Very nice. OK.
  • 7:02 - 7:08
So, I'll see you next time for Day 25!
    It'll be fun! See ya!
