Riff #12: Alive - Pearl Jam (Songs Guitar Lesson RF-012) How to play

  • 0:23 - 0:25
Hi! How you doin'? Justin here
  • 0:25 - 0:27
    and in this lesson today
we're going to be checking out
  • 0:27 - 0:31
the riff to 'Alive' by one of
    my favorite bands Pearl Jam.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    It's a properly awesome riff.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    Not particluarly difficult to play
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    but often taught wrong so
I'm going to show you the right way.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
Let's get to a close up and check it out.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
Ok we are starting here with a
    little A open power chord.
  • 0:43 - 0:48
We're just plucking the 5th string,
    4th string, and 3rd string.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
1st finger doing the little mini bar there.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    Doesn't really matter if you
    accidently hit the 2nd string.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    It doesn't sound great but
    it doesn't really matter
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    You definitely don't want to
    hit the thinnest string.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
And you might want to use your thumb
    to mute that thickest string,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
just to keep it nice and clean.
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    (plays A open power chord)
  • 1:02 - 1:04
That's played once for the down pick.
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    Then we've got
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    which is a slide.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
The third finger is sliding from around
the 4th fret, maybe the 5th fret
  • 1:12 - 1:13
    up to the 7th fret.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
Lifting off and you've plucked the
    open D string.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    And then hammer on your
1st finger into the 7th fret
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    followed by your
3rd finger in the 9th fret.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
This last note is actually picked so it's
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    pick the open D,
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    hammer the 7th fret
  • 1:36 - 1:38
and then pick this note at the 9th fret.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    This is the 4th string.
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    Now at the moment,
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    because I'm demonstrating
  • 1:45 - 1:46
I'm sliding up to the 7th fret
  • 1:48 - 1:49
    and it's a bit organised
  • 1:49 - 1:50
but it's a bit looser than that.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    It's kind of a slider
  • 1:53 - 1:55
I think it finishes on that 7th fret
  • 1:55 - 1:57
but you gotta feel it a bit
    looser than that.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    So 9th fret, 7th fret.
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    Then you got
  • 2:08 - 2:10
which is the open two middle strings
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    down and up
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    then put the chord down.
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    Very common rock thing.
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    Good thing to practice.
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    So down pick,
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    up,
  • 2:21 - 2:22
    down with a chord.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    Then this second time,
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    bend, 9th fret semitone,
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    back, 9th fret, 7th fret,
  • 2:43 - 2:45
and then the open D string
    and G string again.
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    Our middle two strings.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
Then right at the end, we've got
    an F chord here.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
This is the 8th fret, a power chord
  • 3:04 - 3:05
    with the 5th string group
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    and we go
    down, down, down, down,
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    move it up two frets,
  • 3:09 - 3:09
    down.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    This is now a G
  • 3:11 - 3:13
and then you lift off your third finger
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    so you've got 10, 10, 12
  • 3:18 - 3:19
which is kind of like a C chord.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    It's a C chord 2nd inversion.
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    Little power chord C.
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    S'pose you could go
  • 3:31 - 3:33
if you want but the record
    sounds like.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
OK. Let me just play it
    nice and slowly for you.
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    Here we go.
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    And normal speed.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
Well that was 'Alive' by Pearl Jam.
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    Awesome song, great band.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
If you haven't checked them out before,
if you're a bit too young
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    Pearl Jam are the business.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    When I was a teenager,
that was like as good as it got
  • 4:36 - 4:38
and I spent many years playing Pearl Jam songs
  • 4:38 - 4:41
in sweaty little toilets around Australia.
  • 4:41 - 4:44
Really awesome, great stuff to work out.
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    Really good fun to play.
  • 4:45 - 4:48
Really nice two guitar part things
    quite often as well so
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    go check out Pearl Jam,
if you don't know their stuff already.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
See ya for another riff some time very soon.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
Take care of yourselves. Bye bye.
