There is No Limit to Where Sin Will Take You - Ryan Fullerton

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    Can I ask you this?
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    If you're hiding a sin,
  • 0:04 - 0:07
have you ever had to sin more
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    to hide it?
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    And if you've hardened your
heart to sin and to hide it,
  • 0:11 - 0:14
how do you know you'll be able to stop?
  • 0:14 - 0:17
What if you keep hardening yourself?
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    Maybe you'll find yourself doing
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    things you never dreamed
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    that you were capable of.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    Sin demands more,
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    and hidden sin demands
    more sin to cover it,
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    and eventually David -
  • 0:29 - 0:31
the man after God's own heart -
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    arranges a murder of Uriah.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    You think David ever dreamed
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    he would become a murderer?
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    Verse 14,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    "In the morning, David
wrote a letter to Joab -
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    (that's the general) -
  • 0:47 - 0:49
and sent it by the hand of Uriah."
  • 0:49 - 0:51
Uriah is holding in his hand
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    his own death warrant.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    That's calloused.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    In the letter, he wrote,
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    "'Set Uriah in the forefront
    of the hardest fighting,
  • 0:59 - 1:00
and then draw back from him
  • 1:00 - 1:02
that he may be struck down and die.'
  • 1:02 - 1:04
And as Joab was besieging the city,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
he assigned Uriah to the place
  • 1:06 - 1:08
where he knew there were valiant men
  • 1:08 - 1:10
and the men of the city came out
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    and fought with Joab.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
And some of the servants of David
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    among the people fell.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
    Uriah the Hittite also died.
  • 1:18 - 1:20
Then Joab sent and told David
  • 1:20 - 1:22
all the news about the fighting."
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    And David gets the news
  • 1:24 - 1:28
    that Uriah is dead.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    The scramble is over.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    The deed is covered.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
David gives Bathsheba a minute to mourn,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
and then he marries the poor widow.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    Verse 26,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
"When the wife of Uriah heard
  • 1:42 - 1:45
that Uriah her husband was dead,
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    she lamented her husband.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
And when the mourning was over,
  • 1:48 - 1:50
David sent and brought her to his house
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    and she became his wife
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    and bore him a son."
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    The scramble worked.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
We'll just tell people the baby
    was born a little premature.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    The conscience is still screaming,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
but at least his sin is
    not going to scream
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    into the city streets
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    when Bathsheba starts
    wearing maternity clothes.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    David can rest.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    Except that David had forgotten,
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    or should I say suppressed
  • 2:21 - 2:23
and swept under the rug of his mind
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    the fact that God knows
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    and God exposes.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
Listen to this haunting last verse
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    in verse 27 -
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    last part of the verse.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    "And she became his wife
  • 2:41 - 2:43
and bore him a son -
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    (everything's covered) -
  • 2:45 - 2:48
but the thing that David had done
  • 2:48 - 2:52
    displeased the Lord."
  • 2:52 - 2:55
There is nothing more foolish in the world
  • 2:55 - 2:59
    than hiding sin.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
You are hiding sin from the One
  • 3:01 - 3:04
for whom there is no darkness.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    Psalm 139, even the darkness
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    is as light to Him.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
There's no place you can hide before God.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
He knit you together in your mother's womb
  • 3:15 - 3:17
and He knows the day of your death.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
Before a word is on your mouth,
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    He knows it completely.
  • 3:20 - 3:24
    There's no hiding from God.
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    Isaiah 29:15,
  • 3:25 - 3:27
"Woe to those who go to great depths
  • 3:27 - 3:29
to hide their plans from the Lord,
  • 3:29 - 3:32
who do their work in darkness
  • 3:32 - 3:36
and think, 'who sees us? who will know?'"
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    Proverbs 5:21,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
"Your ways are in full view of the Lord
  • 3:40 - 3:44
and He examines all your paths."
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    Hebrews 4:13,
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    "Nothing in all creation is
    hidden from God's sight.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
Everything is uncovered and laid bare
  • 3:53 - 3:55
before the eyes of Him to whom
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    we must give an account."
  • 3:59 - 4:03
If you fear your wife's anger so much
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    that you could never tell
    her what you've done,
  • 4:06 - 4:10
then you have a super shallow view of God.
  • 4:10 - 4:14
If you legitimize not telling your wife
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    about your infidelity
  • 4:16 - 4:19
because you love her so much,
  • 4:19 - 4:23
you have a terribly shallow view of God.
  • 4:23 - 4:27
    If you're more worried about
    displeasing your parents
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    than your God,
  • 4:29 - 4:31
then you have a very small
  • 4:31 - 4:35
    and unbiblical view of God.
  • 4:35 - 4:36
If you think your boss's anger
  • 4:36 - 4:38
or losing your job is worse
  • 4:38 - 4:40
than God's discipline or God's wrath
  • 4:40 - 4:43
then you need a greater vision of God.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    David had forgotten God.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
God had seen and God was displeased.
  • 4:47 - 4:48
    That is all that matters.
  • 4:48 - 4:52
Immanuel, if we are not a people
  • 4:52 - 4:55
who deal before the face of God,
  • 4:55 - 4:59
then we are not God's people.
  • 4:59 - 5:02
If we are not a people who understand
  • 5:02 - 5:05
that all we do and have done and will do
  • 5:05 - 5:08
happens before the face of God
  • 5:08 - 5:11
and the most important thing in our lives
  • 5:11 - 5:13
is to deal with that God
  • 5:13 - 5:17
in integrity and truth and openness
  • 5:17 - 5:20
then we are not the people of God.
  • 5:20 - 5:25
    We are simply one more
    dead church on the corner.
  • 5:25 - 5:29
Now what God does to David is amazing.
  • 5:29 - 5:36
He does not strike him dead.
  • 5:36 - 5:39
