The First Artemis Flight Path Around the Moon

Our Artemis program will return humans to the Moon by 2024. Artemis I, the first Artemis mission, will test all of the human rated systems in deep space — including the Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket. This is its 26 day journey… in 30 seconds.

Artemis I will restore America's

ability to reach the Moon with systems

built for humans.

Launching east from Kennedy Space Center,

the Space Launch System will propel an

uncrewed Orion spacecraft to orbit and

then commit to a lunar trajectory with a

translunar injection.

This outbound coast will intersect
with the Moon to enter a

distant retrograde orbit.

With systems check, the engine
will once again fire to

exit lunar orbit and set Orion on a

path back to Earth.
