Stories of Revival (Holy Chaos) - Bob Jennings

  • 0:06 - 0:08
I suppose you can call it revival,
  • 0:08 - 0:11
but it was a move of the Spirit anyway.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
It wasn't really any historic revival.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
But as we think of, you know, where cities were
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    swept into the Kingdom overnight,
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    that type of thing.
  • 0:22 - 0:26
One of the most outstanding things in my mind
  • 0:26 - 0:30
was up there with Keith McCloud for 8 months
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    I believe it was,
  • 0:31 - 0:33
and we made it a practice to meet
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    for open-ended prayer every day
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    if not twice a day.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
And there was about four of us.
  • 0:40 - 0:41
And so it was just sort of a log cabin
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    Bible school type of thing.
  • 0:45 - 0:51
It was just a matter of meeting every day
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    for preaching and prayer,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
    that's all it was.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
So, in the middle of that time,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    Keith had accepted an invitation
  • 0:59 - 1:00
to hold meetings at a big
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    evangelical Mennonite church.
  • 1:03 - 1:04
And so we began to pray regularly
  • 1:04 - 1:06
for those meetings that were coming up.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
I suppose we prayed for maybe four months
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    every day.
  • 1:09 - 1:14
And the meetings began in Wymark, Saskatchewan.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
God came in power in the very first meeting.
  • 1:18 - 1:22
I mean, the very first meeting
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    God was there in power.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
People were weeping, people were coming to the front.
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    He never gave any altar call;
  • 1:28 - 1:30
he didn't believe in an altar call,
  • 1:30 - 1:32
but people, they couldn't take it,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
and they could not keep their seats,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
they got up and they went to the front,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
and they were confessing their sins.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
And every night, as I recall,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    there was probably 20, 30, 40 people
  • 1:42 - 1:44
up front there doing business with God.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    Every night the meetings lasted
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    till 1 or 2 or 3 o'clock
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    with people asking for help.
  • 1:49 - 1:50
They were in distress of soul.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    I remember one young girl,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
she was about 12 years old.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
It was ten minutes before she could even talk.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
She was under such deep conviction.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
And so we got to bed at like 4 o'clock
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    every night.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
And sometimes people couldn't even wait
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    until the sermon was over.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    They were crying out under
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    conviction of sin
  • 2:10 - 2:12
and he would have to stop preaching
  • 2:12 - 2:13
and ask the pastor to take them
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    to the basement.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
I remember one fellow, he was under
  • 2:17 - 2:19
such conviction of sin, it was like
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    he was just screaming,
  • 2:21 - 2:25
and as the pastor took him to the basement,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
you could hear him crying down there
  • 2:27 - 2:30
like an animal going to the slaughter.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
And so it was a very powerful time.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
People were starting to come from many miles away.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    The report was spreading.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
I know Keith McCloud said if he had any
  • 2:39 - 2:41
regrets at the end of that time,
  • 2:41 - 2:45
it was that he didn't continue the meetings longer.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
And so at the end of the time,
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    it was estimated that half of the church;
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    there were probably three or four hundred people attending;
  • 2:51 - 2:53
half of the church either had a fresh
  • 2:53 - 2:55
or a new meeting with God.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    Brother McCloud said that
  • 2:58 - 3:00
every night it was like he could hardly wait
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    to get into the pulpit.
  • 3:02 - 3:07
He was full of unvented wine.
  • 3:07 - 3:10
God just gave him such authority,
  • 3:10 - 3:14
    such clarity, such utterance,
  • 3:14 - 3:17
such an ability to magnify Christ.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
It was like when he was done with his sermon,
  • 3:20 - 3:22
every tree in the forest was chopped down
  • 3:22 - 3:25
except one. Just one was left standing.
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    He just cleaned the slate.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    Knocked down every idol.
  • 3:28 - 3:29
    Routed every sin.
  • 3:29 - 3:33
    Christ alone was left standing.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
I remember one time, one woman,
  • 3:36 - 3:37
right in the middle of the sermon,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    she was under such conviction
  • 3:39 - 3:40
she just stood up and called out
  • 3:40 - 3:42
across the aisle and asked somebody else
  • 3:42 - 3:47
for forgiveness in the middle of the sermon.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    It was holy chaos.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    One time, another remarkable thing,
  • 3:53 - 3:57
about a half a year after I was converted,
  • 3:57 - 4:00
and I was converted when I was a member
  • 4:00 - 4:04
of a fraternity at Iowa State.
  • 4:04 - 4:06
So about a half a year after I was converted,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
this company that I was working for,
  • 4:08 - 4:10
they were going to have a regional meeting
  • 4:10 - 4:15
back in the town where I had gone to college.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
So I thought maybe this would be an opportunity
  • 4:18 - 4:22
to organize a Gospel meeting for my fraternity brothers.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
This fellow who was friendly with me,
  • 4:25 - 4:29
he set up this meeting for a Gospel meeting
  • 4:29 - 4:33
after the supper in the living room.
  • 4:33 - 4:37
And probably about 40 guys gathered in there.
  • 4:37 - 4:40
And another older Christian by the name of
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    Vader Zudtke from Northeast Iowa,
  • 4:43 - 4:46
he came down, and also my brother was there
  • 4:46 - 4:47
    and another fellow.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
So anyway, here Vader was sharing the Gospel
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    with these fraternity brothers,
  • 4:53 - 4:57
and God began to settle in.
  • 4:57 - 5:02
And what was designed to be a 40 minute meeting
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    in that living room floor
  • 5:04 - 5:05
    guys sitting around,
  • 5:05 - 5:07
it turned out to be, as I recall,
  • 5:07 - 5:11
about 7 hours before we were done that night.
  • 5:11 - 5:14
One fellow sitting there just came under conviction
  • 5:14 - 5:17
and began to weep and cry out
  • 5:17 - 5:21
in front of all of these fraternity brothers
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    calling on the Lord.
  • 5:24 - 5:28
There was conversations going on up in the rooms.
  • 5:28 - 5:29
People would leave - some had to go leave
  • 5:29 - 5:32
for wrestling practice at 8:00 type of thing,
  • 5:32 - 5:34
and here when they got done with
  • 5:34 - 5:36
wrestling practice, they came back in
  • 5:36 - 5:41
    and sat down again.
  • 5:41 - 5:44
    Couldn't get away.
  • 5:44 - 5:47
One fellow came in and heard what was going on,
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    and he was pretty huffy,
  • 5:49 - 5:50
you know what's going on in there?
  • 5:50 - 5:56
And he came in blowing smoke,
  • 5:56 - 6:00
and it wasn't about two minutes before Vader had
  • 6:00 - 6:01
had his Bible open and this guy was
  • 6:01 - 6:05
just eating out of his hand.
  • 6:05 - 6:10
Another guy came in, a former roommate of mine,
  • 6:10 - 6:12
I said, "Hey Wayne, come on in the living room here,
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    we're having a Gospel meeting."
  • 6:14 - 6:15
And he mocked and said I don't need that
  • 6:15 - 6:18
    such and such.
  • 6:18 - 6:20
And you know what, it was about a year later,
  • 6:20 - 6:21
and I heard that this guy had
  • 6:21 - 6:29
    committed suicide.
  • 6:29 - 6:30
    His girlfriend left him,
  • 6:30 - 6:41
and he put the shotgun to the roof of his mouth.
  • 6:41 - 6:44
Maybe a couple years after I was converted,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
I began to see the narrowness
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    of the narrow way,
  • 6:48 - 6:49
    and I began to wonder,
  • 6:49 - 6:52
Am I really in or not?
  • 6:52 - 6:57
And I was sharing this with an older Christian
  • 6:57 - 7:02
and he began to share some Bible verses with me
  • 7:02 - 7:05
    whereby I could evaluate myself,
  • 7:05 - 7:08
and I remember God just deeply whispering
  • 7:08 - 7:11
    to my soul: That's enough.
  • 7:11 - 7:13
That's enough, Bob. Don't question it anymore.
  • 7:13 - 7:15
    You are Mine.
  • 7:15 - 7:17
And it was not long after that,
  • 7:17 - 7:20
where I was in a meeting one night,
  • 7:20 - 7:25
and a missionary was back from Italy,
  • 7:25 - 7:27
and he was sharing about the Fatherhood of God.
  • 7:27 - 7:31
God's Fatherhood, His tender care as a Father.
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    And God settled in.
  • 7:32 - 7:35
I don't know if anybody else felt it like I did.
  • 7:35 - 7:37
But it was, for me, special.
  • 7:37 - 7:40
And I was just being melted, melted, melted,
  • 7:40 - 7:43
    as he was talking.
  • 7:43 - 7:45
And after the meeting, probably three fourths
  • 7:45 - 7:47
of the church congregation had left,
  • 7:47 - 7:49
there were just a few of us
  • 7:49 - 7:51
hanging around talking about the things of God,
  • 7:51 - 7:54
and this older saint, he came up to me,
  • 7:54 - 7:56
and shared a truth with me.
  • 7:56 - 8:00
And my heart - I just was flooded
  • 8:00 - 8:02
with the love of God right there.
  • 8:02 - 8:06
This fellow, he says, men, let's gather for prayer.
  • 8:06 - 8:09
We had a time of prayer in the back of that church building.
  • 8:09 - 8:12
And I don't remember anything ever like it
  • 8:12 - 8:17
before or since, where all I could say was
  • 8:17 - 8:18
    Abba, Father.
  • 8:18 - 8:21
At the top of my voice.
  • 8:21 - 8:25
It was just the most special time for me
  • 8:25 - 8:29
    that I've ever had.
  • 8:29 - 8:32
I think that's the Spirit bearing witness
  • 8:32 - 8:37
with our spirit that we are children.
