ΝΑΙΕΤΑΩ Δ' ΙΘΑΚΗΝ - I AM FROM ITHACA
-
0:03 - 0:09Ithaca Friends of Homer Association "EYXHN ODYCCEI" presents
-
0:09 - 0:14a documentary by Yiannis Arsenis
-
0:15 - 0:22"I'm from Ithaca" - Odyssey
-
0:31 - 0:35When one first sets eyes on the island of Ithaca
-
0:35 - 0:40he cannot fail to be enchanted by the natural beauty...
-
0:40 - 0:43small, rocky, green,
-
0:44 - 0:48surrounded by sea shimmering in the sunlight
-
0:49 - 0:53with paths embroidered with colorful flowers
-
0:54 - 0:57crystal waters, traditional villages
-
0:58 - 1:01... endless light and color.
-
1:02 - 1:06What makes her unique is that is more than an island,
-
1:06 - 1:10it's an idea, a symbol
-
1:10 - 1:16Is identified with the notion of returning home and nostalgia.
-
1:16 - 1:26symbolizes, man's struggle, overcoming difficulties, his return journey to his roots
-
1:33 - 1:40No other island in the world has been identified with nostalgia as much as Ithaca
-
1:41 - 1:43and that thanks to Homer
-
1:43 - 1:48the greatest poet of antiquity, who with his epic Odyssey
-
1:48 - 1:53praised the struggle of the king of Ithaca, Odysseus (Ulysses)
-
1:53 - 1:55to return to his home
-
1:55 - 2:00and highlighted universal values through his poetry
-
2:30 - 2:33What secrets are hidden in Ithaca of today?
-
2:33 - 2:38Is Ithaca of today the one which Homer speaks of?
-
2:38 - 2:44and if so where are the remains of the kingdom of Odysseus?
-
3:00 - 3:05The Search for Homer's Ithaca began centuries ago
-
3:06 - 3:12Several opponents of Ithaca, Homer's Ithaca, argue that around the Middle Ages
-
3:12 - 3:18Ithaca lost its name, and for that reason.. It is not Homer's Ithaca!
-
3:18 - 3:23There are "Skylakas'" maps, the ones of a Roman cartographer,
-
3:23 - 3:30there is also a map of the Catalan conquerors of Greece in 1300..
-
3:30 - 3:33and on this map this island is called Ithaca.
-
3:33 - 3:43around 1700-1600-1580 some maps call Ithaca with a different name,
-
3:43 - 3:46Picola Cephalonia, Val di Compare,
-
3:47 - 3:52Tiaki or Thiaki that we use today as a nickname.
-
3:52 - 4:02This is not proof that Ithaca lost its name and for that reason it isn't Homer's Ithaca.
-
4:02 - 4:07You realize that Ithaca carries a great glory!
-
4:07 - 4:10a glory which was envied by many.
-
4:10 - 4:13It was envied by the Lefkadians and the Cefalonians,
-
4:13 - 4:18Certainly it wasn't the locals but some archaeologists who undertook the task of defending
-
4:18 - 4:20a Lefkadian Homeric Ithaca such as Dorpfeld
-
4:20 - 4:25and a Cefalonian Homeric Ithaca such as some other archaeologists,
-
4:25 - 4:31who assume that the Homeric Ithaca is in Cefalonia but where in Cefalonia?
-
4:31 - 4:33There are 10 controversial areas in Cefalonia
-
4:33 - 4:40In my opinion the equation of 10 areas referring to the palace of Odysseus or the city of Ithaca
-
4:40 - 4:42seems as if there is none.
-
4:42 - 4:48The past 10 years there have been 5 Cefalonian theories referring to Homer's Ithaca
-
4:48 - 4:52the latest the overseal, the capping stone that of Bittlestone
-
4:52 - 4:54the big hoax as I call it.
-
4:54 - 4:59Anyway that theory as we all know, although it received great publicity,
-
4:59 - 5:03since then, has lapsed into obscurity, at the moment no longer exists.
-
5:03 - 5:06Whilst the Lefkadias stayed in one theory that of Dorpfeld
-
5:06 - 5:11which actually sank immediately after it was born
-
5:11 - 5:16Dorpfeld imposed it because he was a strong archaeological personality
-
5:16 - 5:22he imposed it only on his own will and his own dynamic.
-
5:22 - 5:25But that theory immediately crashed.
-
5:25 - 5:29Cefalonia and Lefkada but mainly Cefalonia
-
5:29 - 5:33is 7 or 8 times bigger than Ithaca.
-
5:33 - 5:43Is it possible for this large population, this naval, military and political power
-
5:43 - 5:50to lose its name and a rock, one seventh of its expanse, to get it instead?
-
5:50 - 5:52There is no historical precedent.
-
5:52 - 5:56The existence of so many theories about Homer's Ithaca
-
5:56 - 6:01proves that there are no compelling archaeological findings
-
6:01 - 6:06allowing us to scientifically justify one or another.
-
6:06 - 6:09Or maybe there are some finally available?
-
6:09 - 6:14Ladies and gentlemen let's go to a sensational archaeological discovery
-
6:14 - 6:17which will be discussed not only in Greece but throughout the world.
-
6:17 - 6:23in Ithaca a team of archaeologists is announcing that, after significant recent findings
-
6:23 - 6:26from the excavations on the island, it is convinced at last
-
6:26 - 6:29to have found the Homeric Palace of Odysseus.
-
6:29 - 6:34A new impetus for the identification of today's Ithaca with the Homeric one
-
6:34 - 6:40was given with University of Ioannina announcement on August 20th 2010
-
6:40 - 6:46according to which, during excavations in the area of St. Athanasius in Northern Ithaca
-
6:46 - 6:53they found a Mansion of the Mycenaean era which seems to be the Palace of Odysseus.
-
6:53 - 6:58I am really glad that as Mayor of Ithaca in 1993, I took the initiative
-
6:58 - 7:06and invited Ioannina University to come and explore the area of Northern Ithaca
-
7:06 - 7:08it was proven how right I was.
-
7:08 - 7:1615 to 16 years later, the University with Mr. Papadopoulos and Mrs. Kontorli
-
7:16 - 7:20they announce, in an archaeological conference..
-
7:20 - 7:26that they have found the palace of Odysseus and Penelope, in this location of St. Athanasius.
-
7:26 - 7:33I imagine that, to proceed in such a significant announcement, you have equally important findings in your hands.
-
7:33 - 7:35Can you tell us what these are?
-
7:36 - 7:40Yes, the area "Homer's School - St. Athanasius"
-
7:40 - 7:49is surrounded by a cyclopean wall and inside this wall there is a building complex...
-
7:49 - 7:53in two terraces, on two levels
-
7:53 - 8:01also there are movable findings from the prehistoric, Mycenaean era and earlier
-
8:01 - 8:06but the most important element that makes us believe
-
8:06 - 8:10always with reservation because we need additional evidence
-
8:10 - 8:16is a tripartite building which was found on the lower level
-
8:16 - 8:21which has the dimensions of mansions of palaces
-
8:21 - 8:27of the palaces that have been found in Mycenae, in Tiryns, in Pylos
-
8:27 - 8:33It is obvious that such an important archaeological discovery would shoot down
-
8:33 - 8:38all the theories which question whether current Ithaca is Homer's Ithaca
-
8:40 - 8:43This significant announcement
-
8:43 - 8:48this shocking announcement that changes the facts
-
8:48 - 8:52the archaeological facts at least to date
-
8:52 - 8:55and that the archaeological establishment will fight it
-
8:55 - 9:01have no doubt, it will fight it because it has learned to do so
-
9:01 - 9:05in every announcement related to new findings
-
9:05 - 9:07Ithaca has been targeted at large
-
9:07 - 9:09Being a small island it has been fought against
-
9:09 - 9:11its glory has been fought against
-
9:11 - 9:14and is still and will continue to be fought against
-
9:14 - 9:20but I would like to believe that the opponents weapons have already been exhausted
-
9:20 - 9:25Many excavated the site, including Schliemann
-
9:25 - 9:30apparently sensing that there was something important there
-
9:32 - 9:38We can say at the outset that this area "shouted, talked archaeologically"
-
9:38 - 9:43and I really wonder why such great archaeologists who passed through here
-
9:43 - 9:46did not detect its particularity
-
9:46 - 9:51The area of St. Athanasius had almost been abandoned, for obviously too many reasons
-
9:51 - 9:55they wanted to discredit it, the depreciation was in the background of those who..
-
9:55 - 10:00were processing theories and plans or else for this particular area to be discredited
-
10:00 - 10:07Before the archaeologists' interest turned to the area of St. Athanasius on the mountain of "Exogi",
-
10:07 - 10:14there had been other areas in Ithaca with significant archaeological discoveries
-
10:14 - 10:17The theory of Aetos (an area in southern Ithaca) lasted for many years
-
10:17 - 10:22and it affected many, among which the great Schliemann
-
10:22 - 10:24Schliemann was a partisan of Gell
-
10:24 - 10:30They believed the first theory released in 1806, the theory of William Gell
-
10:30 - 10:33which placed the palace of Ithaca in Aetos
-
10:33 - 10:41The Englishman who predicted alongside Gell that Homer's Ithaca is not in Vathi
-
10:41 - 10:44but it is in "Poli" in the region of Stavros - St. Athanasius
-
10:44 - 10:49was another Englishman, a resourceful man, William Martin Luc
-
10:49 - 10:54who came to Ithaca in '06, made small excavations and didn't find many things
-
10:54 - 10:58But he found coins and at the time coins of Ithaca were considered..
-
10:58 - 11:02to be the very conclusive evidence of Ithaca's Homeric past
-
11:02 - 11:06One of the most important archaeological sites of Ithaca
-
11:06 - 11:10is located in the region of "Polis" near the village of Stavros
-
11:10 - 11:16This site is called "Poli" because inshore the village of Stavros..
-
11:16 - 11:19there is an ancient submerged city
-
11:19 - 11:22In the famous "Loizos" cave in Poli
-
11:22 - 11:27have been found many significant archaeological discoveries
-
11:31 - 11:37In this cave, have been discovered twelve bronze tripods
-
11:37 - 11:44whose pieces are now exhibited at the archaeological museum of Stavros in Ithaca
-
11:44 - 11:52a Corinthian dish has also been found, dedicated to the god Apollo
-
11:52 - 11:58and so it can be deduced that it was a worshiping cavern in the name of Apollo
-
11:58 - 12:01In this cave has also been discovered
-
12:01 - 12:07the triangular shell made of clay that has two words written on it..
-
12:07 - 12:12'EYXHN ODYCCEI' (With the wish of Odysseus)
-
12:12 - 12:21It seems that the locals, as was customary in other regions of our country as well..
-
12:21 - 12:26worshiped their hero as a demigod along with the god Apollo
-
12:26 - 12:34It was proved to be the ark attesting Ithaca's history of the past 3000 years!
-
12:36 - 12:44In 2006, during excavations by the Ioannina University, another important finding came to light
-
12:44 - 12:50A plaque, eloquently narrating one of the episodes of the Odyssey
-
12:50 - 12:56We also found plaques in linear writing, one of which may be Linear B
-
12:56 - 13:01and this has been published in the prestigious journal "Cadmus" in Germany
-
13:01 - 13:04If I'm not mistaken, Linear B is found only in palaces?
-
13:04 - 13:07Certainly, in the archives of the palaces
-
13:07 - 13:12we are not sure if that is Linear B, but hopefully we shall uncover other findings..
-
13:12 - 13:18The plaque depicts a ship with Odysseus tied to the mast
-
13:18 - 13:26and on either side monstrous drawings, a trident and signs of possibly Linear B writing
-
13:26 - 13:30Considering the data that we currently have in Ithaca
-
13:30 - 13:38we believe this position fits the Homeric description of the palace of Odysseus
-
13:38 - 13:41I forgot to tell you that the two levels
-
13:41 - 13:48the buildings, on the two levels are connected with stairways carved into the rock
-
13:48 - 13:52Something also mentioned in the Odyssey namely that..
-
13:52 - 14:00the occupants of the palace communicated going up and down stone stairways
-
14:01 - 14:05It is mentioned several times in Homer that Penelope goes up and down
-
14:05 - 14:08the same way that Eurycleia goes up and down
-
14:08 - 14:14So a building construction is presented where for a staircase which goes up to exist
-
14:14 - 14:19it means there is a lower terrace and an upper terrace as described in Homer
-
14:19 - 14:27There is also a description, given by Telemachus to Eurycleia before his departure for Pylos
-
14:27 - 14:33He tells her: "Eldress, go to the rock.. to the depot which is under the rock
-
14:33 - 14:37and bring me wine and oil, to take with me
-
14:49 - 14:56The announcement by the University of Ioannina archaeologists, brings us closer than ever
-
14:56 - 15:00to the truth as to where Homer's Ithaca is located
-
15:02 - 15:06The archaeologists, Papadopoulos couple
-
15:06 - 15:09had accomplish something very important
-
15:10 - 15:14the expropriation of the 25-acre-area of St. Athanasius
-
15:14 - 15:18that was a really great accomplishment and it existed
-
15:18 - 15:22as a demand by the residents of Ithaca since 1904
-
15:22 - 15:26There is already a decision by the Central Archaeological Council
-
15:26 - 15:29for these 25 acres of expropriated area
-
15:29 - 15:36to demolish not only the church, this ruined residue that still exists
-
15:36 - 15:42but also the houses of "Vrettos", the lord of the area
-
15:42 - 15:48who played a very cunning role in this History of archeology in Ithaca
-
15:49 - 15:56It is a known story, on top of the palace there is the temple
-
15:56 - 16:00and on top of the temple there is the Orthodox Church
-
16:02 - 16:09The area of St. Athanasius appears to meet all of those features described by Homer
-
16:09 - 16:15And there are so many answers that they cannot all be coincidences
-
16:16 - 16:23The position of St. Athanasius is a geostrategic one that happens to have what it has on it
-
16:23 - 16:27It strategically covers the passage towards the west
-
16:28 - 16:33If the palace is here, there are three ports around the palace
-
16:33 - 16:37A port in the town of Stavros, which is further away from here
-
16:37 - 16:42which must have been the public port from which Telemachus left for Pylos
-
16:42 - 16:47The port of Afales which is in the north and is their own port, the royal port
-
16:47 - 16:51And the third port is the port of Frikes, which is the port of the furrow (rithro)
-
16:51 - 16:55The village above the harbor of the furrow (rithro) is called Platythreias
-
16:55 - 16:59Platy rithro (wide furrow) They all tie together
-
16:59 - 17:02Some researchers have claimed that in Ithaca
-
17:02 - 17:07a palace could not have flourished due to its lack of water
-
17:07 - 17:12Besides the fact that around "St Athanasius" and within the site there are plenty of wells
-
17:12 - 17:15ancient wells, Mycenaean wells
-
17:15 - 17:18there are two water sources
-
17:18 - 17:21"Melanydros source" and "Tykti krini" mentioned in Homer
-
17:21 - 17:26Firstly, neither a palace nor a town could have been built away from water
-
17:26 - 17:32there had to be plenty of water for the palace and the town, the "asti"
-
17:32 - 17:36Well a little further away from here there is a great water source
-
17:36 - 17:40"Kalamos" as we call it today that could supply water throughout the region at the time.
-
17:40 - 17:44"Melampso" was one of Penelope handmaidens
-
17:44 - 17:54at some point tells to Odysseus "Go away, go to sleep at the coppersmith's"
-
17:54 - 18:02The archaeologists dig out a coppersmith's workshop at St Athanasius
-
18:02 - 18:11In Mycenaean era a coppersmith's workshop was a Palace's annex
-
18:11 - 18:17That was the case in Pylos, in Mycenae and in Crete
-
18:17 - 18:26It is a very strong indication, characteristic archaeological proof
-
18:27 - 18:32These archaeological findings already constitute considerable indications
-
18:32 - 18:36that Odysseus once walked in today's Ithaca
-
18:36 - 18:41A reinforcing element other than this tripartite building-palace
-
18:41 - 18:46is an artificial, "tykti" as it's called, a Mycenaean fountain
-
18:46 - 18:53which we did not date ourselves, but was dated by the best specialist globally
-
18:53 - 18:58professor Jost Knaus from the Technical University of Munich
-
18:58 - 19:05who dated it to the 13th century BC, namely in the time of Homer's Odysseus
-
19:05 - 19:09These two elements, "tykti krini" and the mansion
-
19:09 - 19:16this tripartite building which resembles similar ones found in Pylos, in Mycenae and in Tiryns
-
19:16 - 19:20make us believe, I repeat with reservation
-
19:20 - 19:26that this position is the one that fits the description of Homer
-
19:26 - 19:30and we think that until someone else proves otherwise
-
19:30 - 19:35that there has to be the palace of Odysseus
-
19:35 - 19:40for which many laudable efforts have been made before
-
19:53 - 19:59The area of St. Athanasius deserves everyone's undivided attention
-
19:59 - 20:04but mainly that of the State and the scientific community
-
20:05 - 20:10Therefore, this announcement is the best news..
-
20:10 - 20:15the international community and the world has heard originating from Greece
-
20:15 - 20:18the most pleasant news from Greece
-
20:18 - 20:24All other news is about wretchedness, misery, bankruptcy, etc
-
20:24 - 20:28This piece of news coming from a Greek university and from Greek archaeologists
-
20:28 - 20:32has not been sufficiently exploited by the Greek state
-
20:33 - 20:36Only through a systematic continuation of the excavations
-
20:36 - 20:45will this place be able to pull from within its well kept secrets and reveal Homer's Ithaca
-
20:46 - 20:52.. Until then, we shall continue our journey to Ithaca
-
20:52 - 20:57and we shall feel rich for what it has offered to us so far
-
20:59 - 21:03When you set out on your journey to Ithaca
-
21:04 - 21:07pray that the road is long
-
21:08 - 21:14full of adventure, full of knowledge.
-
21:15 - 21:18The Lestrygonians and the Cyclops
-
21:19 - 21:22the angry Poseidon -- do not fear them
-
21:22 - 21:25You will never find such as these on your path
-
21:26 - 21:28if your thoughts remain lofty, if a fine
-
21:29 - 21:37emotion touches your spirit and your body
-
21:39 - 21:42The Lestrygonians and the Cyclops
-
21:43 - 21:45the fierce Poseidon you will never encounter
-
21:45 - 21:48if you do not carry them within your soul
-
21:49 - 21:54if your soul does not set them up before you
-
21:56 - 21:59Pray that the road is long
-
21:59 - 22:02That the summer mornings are many, when
-
22:02 - 22:06with such pleasure, with such joy
-
22:06 - 22:11you will enter ports seen for the first time

-
ΝΑΙΕΤΑΩ Δ' ΙΘΑΚΗΝ - I AM FROM ITHACA
A short archaeological documentary by Yiannis Arsenis
Be a part of the discovery of one of the most important archaeological findings of Mycenaean Era. Help the Archaeological Team of the University of Ioannina in Greece to unearth the ruins of Odysseus Palace on the island of Ithaca.
The excavations at St. Athanasios area in Ithaca has been identified by Greek archaeologists as the palace of Odysseus. The site is believed to be a large Mycenaean palatial building complex occupying two levels. A stairway cut into the solid bedrock of the hill provided easy access to the two levels. Other finds on the site include a funerary enclosure, a large circular structure whose purpose is unknown, several storerooms and workshops, a sophisticated drainage system and an underground cistern. The complex is believed to date to around 1300 BCE.
The excavations are currently on hold owing to a lack of funding from the Greek government. Here is where all of us are asked to come aboard, by donating whatever amount of money is possible to spare for each one of us.
The money that we will raise will be donated to the University of Ioannina for the specific purpose: The continuation of the archaeological excavations and research of Odysseus Palace on the island of Ithaca.
