    We hear anywhere
    from 10 to 200 lies a day,
  • 0:26 - 0:30
    and we spent much of our history
    coming up with ways to detect them,
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    from medieval torture
    devices to polygraphs,
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    blood-pressure and breathing monitors,
    voice-stress analyzers,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    eye trackers, infrared brain scanners,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    and even the 400-pound
    electroencephalogram.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    But although such tools have worked
    under certain circumstances,
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    most can be fooled
    with enough preparation,
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    and none are considered reliable enough
    to even be admissible in court.

    But, what if the problem
    is not with the techniques,
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    but the underlying assumption
    that lying spurs physiological changes?
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    What if we took a more direct approach,
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    using communication science
    to analyze the lies themselves?
  • 1:05 - 1:10
    On a psychological level, we lie partly
    to paint a better picture of ourselves,
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    connecting our fantasies
    to the person we wish we were
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    rather than the person we are.
  • 1:15 - 1:20
    But while our brain is busy dreaming,
    it's letting plenty of signals slip by.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    Our conscious mind only controls
    about 5% of our cognitive function,
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    including communication,
  • 1:25 - 1:29
    while the other 95% occurs
    beyond our awareness,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    and according to the literature
    on reality monitoring,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    stories based on imagined experiences
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    are qualitatively different
    from those based on real experiences.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
    This suggests that creating a false story
    about a personal topic takes work
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    and results in a different
    pattern of language use.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    A technology known
    as linguistic text analysis
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    has helped to identify
    four such common patterns
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    in the subconscious language of deception.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
    First, liars reference themselves less,
    when making deceptive statements.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
    They write or talk more about others,
    often using the third person
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    to distance and disassociate
    themselves from their lie,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    which sounds more false:
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    "Absolutely no party took
    place at this house,"
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    or "I didn't host a party here."
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    Second, liars tend to be more negative,
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    because on a subconscious level,
    they feel guilty about lying.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    For example, a liar
    might say something like,
  • 2:21 - 2:26
    "Sorry, my stupid phone battery died.
    I hate that thing."
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    Third, liars typically explain
    events in simple terms
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    since our brains struggle
    to build a complex lie.
  • 2:32 - 2:33
    Judgment and evaluation
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    are complex things
    for our brains to compute.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
    As a U.S. President once
    famously insisted:
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    "I did not have sexual relations
    with that woman."
  • 2:42 - 2:45
    And finally, even though liars
    keep descriptions simple,
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    they tend to use longer
    and more convoluted sentence structure,
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    inserting unnecessary words
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    and irrelevant but factual
    sounding details in order to pad the lie.

    Another President confronted
    with a scandal proclaimed:
  • 2:56 - 3:00
    "I can say, categorically,
    that this investigation indicates
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    that no one on the White House staff,
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    no one in this administration
    presently employed
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    was involved
    in this very bizarre incident."
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    Let's apply linguistic analysis
    to some famous examples.
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    Take seven-time Tour de France
    winner Lance Armstrong.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    When comparing a 2005 interview,
  • 3:15 - 3:18
    in which he had denied taking
    performance-enhancing drugs
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    to a 2013 interview,
    in which he admitted it,
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    his use of personal pronouns
    increased by nearly 3/4.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    Note the contrast
    between the following two quotes.
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    First: "Okay, you know, a guy
    in a French, in a Parisian laboratory
  • 3:32 - 3:36
    opens up your sample, you know,
    Jean-Francis so-and-so, and he tests it.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    And then you get a phone call
    from a newspaper that says:
  • 3:39 - 3:42
    'We found you to be positive
    six times for EPO."
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    Second: "I lost myself in all of that.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    I'm sure there would be other people
    that couldn't handle it,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    but I certainly couldn't handle it,
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    and I was used to controlling
    everything in my life.
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    I controlled every outcome in my life."
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    In his denial, Armstrong described
    a hypothetical situation
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    focused on someone else,
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    removing himself
    from the situation entirely.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    In his admission, he owns his statements,
  • 4:05 - 4:09
    delving into his personal emotions
    and motivations.
  • 4:09 - 4:13
    But the use of personal pronouns
    is just one indicator of deception.
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    Let's look at another example
    from former Senator
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    and U.S. Presidential candidate
    John Edwards:
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    "I only know that the apparent
    father has said publicly
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    that he is the father of the baby.
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    I also have not been engaged
    in any activity of any description
  • 4:26 - 4:29
    that requested, agreed to,
    or supported payments of any kind
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    to the woman or to the apparent
    father of the baby."
  • 4:32 - 4:36
    Not only is that a pretty long-winded way
    to say, "The baby isn't mine,"
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    but Edwards never calls
    the other parties by name,
  • 4:39 - 4:43
    instead saying "that baby," "the woman,"
    and "the apparent father."
  • 4:43 - 4:46
    Now let's see what he had to say
    when later admitting paternity:
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    "I am Quinn's father.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    I will do everything
    in my power to provide her
  • 4:50 - 4:52
    with the love and support she deserves."
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    The statement is short and direct,
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    calling the child by name
    and addressing his role in her life.
  • 4:58 - 5:02
    So how can you apply these
    lie-spotting techniques to your life?
  • 5:02 - 5:05
    First, remember that many of the lies
    we encounter on a daily basis
  • 5:05 - 5:10
    are far less serious that these examples,
    and may even be harmless.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    But it's still worthwhile
    to be aware of telltale clues,
  • 5:13 - 5:16
    like minimal self-references,
    negative language,
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    simple explanations
    and convoluted phrasing.
  • 5:20 - 5:23
    It just might help you avoid
    an overvalued stock,
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    an ineffective product,
    or even a terrible relationship.
