  • 0:00 - 0:04
The Vila Autódromo community, located in the exclusive neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro,
  • 0:04 - 0:07
has existed for more than 40 years and developed without any public resources from the government.
  • 0:07 - 0:10
Now, because of the construction of the Olympic Park, the federal, state and municipal governments
  • 0:10 - 0:13
want to erase the history of the community.
  • 0:13 - 0:17
On October 12, 2011, the Municipal Secretary of Housing began registering homes in Vila Autódromo.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
This is the first step in the planned eviction of more than 1,000 residences of the community.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    'City Hall's office, good afternoon.'
  • 0:31 - 0:35
"All resettlements are being conducted through dialogue or the court system. No one is being removed by force."
  • 0:35 - 0:37
Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee
  • 0:45 - 0:48
They got here saying they needed to do the registry.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
That we had already lost and if we refused they would come back to demolish (our homes).
  • 0:52 - 0:58
We would lose our homes either way. That's how they arrived, intimidating people.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    Yes?
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    Good afternoon.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
I'm still figuring out how the process is going to be...
  • 1:12 - 1:14
Gabriel Caroli - The Press Officer for the Rio Municipal Department of Housing
  • 1:16 - 1:22
I was talking to my nephew about it, but I also need to wait for my sister to discuss it with her.
  • 1:22 - 1:28
But let me explain something to you - we are from the Municipal Secretary of Social Assistance.
  • 1:28 - 1:37
We're here to do the single registry, the one that gives you access to all of the government's aid programs.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
Yes, but I still need to discuss it with my sister because she needs to be here too...
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    I see.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
To see what the process will be - how long are you here?
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    Today and tomorrow.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
Is this for the eviction of the community?
  • 1:49 - 1:51
Well, the Housing Department already talked to you, right?
  • 1:51 - 1:54
No, no one said anything to me.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
Is it for the eviction or you don't know?
  • 1:58 - 2:02
No, we are here about benefits.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    And what are the benefits?
  • 2:04 - 2:04
    Are you the owner?
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    One of them.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
Did you already authorize your space to be measured?
  • 2:07 - 2:10
Not yet, I'm still talking to them.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
She didn't finish answering my question.
  • 2:14 - 2:19
Well you asked about Housing, and they're right there but you didn't let them in.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    No, but I--
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    They don't inform us.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
When you ask a question that no one has asked...
  • 2:28 - 2:32
Most of the people in the community are lay, so they don't ask that question.
  • 2:32 - 2:37
What is the intention, of removing people from the community?
  • 2:37 - 2:40
So we've been living and working here for many years...
  • 2:40 - 2:47
Every time we ask important questions about what they're doing in the community, they run away.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
They don't give you a concrete answer.
  • 2:49 - 2:53
When I asked if it was for the eviction of the people, they said they didn't know.
  • 2:53 - 2:57
So you have to go talk to someone else. That makes it hard.
  • 3:00 - 3:09
This is an abuse, this is unheard of. I have grandchildren, I have my daughter, this should not be done.
  • 3:09 - 3:15
Go ask (mayor) Paes and (governor) Cabral if they want to live in 40 square meters. It's an absurd, awful thing.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
This is a single house, right?
  • 3:17 - 3:21
No sir, this is my house and my daughter's house is above.
  • 3:21 - 3:28
My house has everything: three bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bathroom, a huge garage.
  • 3:28 - 3:36
I'm not giving up my home - no way. Me and my husband have been here our whole lives.
  • 3:36 - 3:39
I'm irritated, not with you personally but with what they're offering me.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    Thank you for your attention.
  • 3:58 - 4:07
They marked my house (for removal) without my authorization and also marked my sister's here.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
This resident has been here for 12 years.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
And the desire is to continue living here.
  • 4:15 - 4:19

Title:
