E Shape Barre Chord Grips 7 & Min7 (Guitar Lesson IM-121) How to play IF Stage 2

  • 0:10 - 0:11
    Hi, how are you doing?
    Justin here
  • 0:11 - 0:17
    Welcome to IM-121
which is the start of Foundation 2.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
In this lesson we're going to be checking out
    the E shaped bar chords,
  • 0:20 - 0:24
the Dominant 7th, and the minor 7th.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    Now I'm hoping
that you've done lots of practice
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    on your E-shaped major
    and minor bar chords,
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    because these ones are
    just a little bit trickier
  • 0:31 - 0:34
because they've got a few extra notes
    under the bar.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
There are things that you need to remember too,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
so make sure that all of this stuff
    goes into your memory bank.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
Don't have to rely on a book
or a piece of paper or whatever,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
because when you're playing chords for real
you can't be having a book around,
  • 0:44 - 0:46
so you've got to have the chord shapes in here.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
Let's get to a close up and check out
    this Dominant 7th
  • 0:49 - 0:52
and the minor 7th bar chord shapes.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    Here we are,
starting with a G Major bar chord.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    The same rules apply,
1st finger is still slightly on its side,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
the rest of the fingers are all on their tips,
  • 1:03 - 1:07
got a nice kind of round shape going on.
Now, to get our Dominant 7th chord,
  • 1:07 - 1:10
which is usually just said as a '7'.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
What I'm about to show you is
    a G Dominant 7th chord,
  • 1:13 - 1:17
but usually it will just be written
    and said as G7.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
All we have to do is lift our little finger off,
  • 1:19 - 1:23
so it should be kind of easier, right?
Because we've got less fingers on.
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    Well yeah and no.
  • 1:24 - 1:28
    The thing that happens now
is that we're using the bar here for this 4th string,
  • 1:28 - 1:31
so for the regular major chord,
  • 1:31 - 1:36
we've just got the thickest string,
and the thinnest two strings played by the bar,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
so it can be round a bit,
    you know,
  • 1:38 - 1:42
that's not really touching these middle strings,
but now, once the little finger has come off,
  • 1:42 - 1:45
you have to be really thinking
    of the pressure there
  • 1:45 - 1:49
in the the middle part of that 1st finger.
  • 1:49 - 1:55
Now, what some of you may find is
that the note sounds a little bit dead
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    and there's a few culprits.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    The most common one is
the 3rd finger's laying a little bit too flat
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    and touching that 4th string,
  • 2:02 - 2:07
so you'll find just by kind of pressing
this part of your hand up a little bit,
  • 2:07 - 2:09
it'll make the finger a little rounder.
  • 2:09 - 2:09
    . . .
  • 2:09 - 2:11
and you'll get that note back again.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
Now, other times, people haven't got
    their bar strong enough yet,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
and that's why we're looking at
    these chords now.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
It's because they really work on getting
    your bar strengths really good,
  • 2:20 - 2:23
and you'll have to press that part.
  • 2:23 - 2:27
That middle part of your 1st finger
really has to press down hard
  • 2:27 - 2:30
in order to get that note.
  • 2:30 - 2:37
Now, as usual, you'll be doing strum,
pick the notes out one at a time, and strum.
  • 2:37 - 2:41
But you want to pay extra special attention to this note.
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    For the G7 it's the note F.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
    . . .
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    The 4th string,
that's the one that you really want to pay attention to.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
Now the other chord we're looking at
in this lesson is a minor 7th.
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    . . .
  • 2:55 - 2:58
and this one, as you can see,
there's a lot of barre work going on,
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    so we've got,
the barre is covering all 6 strings,
  • 3:01 - 3:06
the 3rd finger is in its usual place,
2 frets above the barre on the 5th string.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    . . .
  • 3:08 - 3:10
But all of the notes are played by the barre,
  • 3:10 - 3:14
    so this one really requires
good barre stamina and good strength.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    I mentioned it last time,
    but I'll mention it again
  • 3:17 - 3:20
you've got to press in the middle of the barre,
  • 3:20 - 3:23
that's where you've got to feel
the pressure going on for this chord.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
It's no good having a slightly round one now.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
You've really got to be thinking
about that pressure going right in.
  • 3:28 - 3:32
Now, I do tend to hear if I'm using this one
  • 3:32 - 3:36
the 2nd finger can kind of sneak in here
for a bit of support there.
  • 3:36 - 3:38
Because that's a pretty tough chord,
  • 3:38 - 3:40
especially when I hold it for a long time
    on an acoustic guitar,
  • 3:40 - 3:44
it gets pretty tough even for me to do it,
you know so, I do it fine,
  • 3:44 - 3:47
but if I had to do it for a long time,
    I'd probably get 2nd finger
  • 3:47 - 3:52
just laying there on top of the 1st finger
to give it a little bit of support.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
As usual you'll be picking the strings
    one at a time.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
The only kind of common things
    that you get here
  • 3:59 - 4:02
is the barre not working properly,
  • 4:02 - 4:04
you might have the 3rd finger laying down
    a little bit too flat
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    and muting the 4th string,
    not as likely
  • 4:07 - 4:10
because you generally have to push
your hand around a little bit
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    to get that proper pressure
    down with the barre.
  • 4:13 - 4:15
It's a bit of a fiddle, you know,
    it's a tough chord.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
That's not one you're probably going to get right away,
    you know,
  • 4:18 - 4:20
unless you've got really big strong hands.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    I really struggled with this,
when I learnt it, you know .
  • 4:23 - 4:25
It's just developing that kind of strength there
  • 4:25 - 4:29
with the muscle in between your thumb
    and your' first finger there.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    That's the one that gets
a bit of a workout for this.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    You should be feeling that.
  • 4:33 - 4:36
So now just to kind of recap,
    you should know your major
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    . . .
  • 4:38 - 4:39
    minor,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    . . .
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    go back to major again,
    lift off little finger,
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    . . .
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    you've got the 7th
  • 4:45 - 4:49
back to major again, lift off your little finger
    and your 2nd finger
  • 4:49 - 4:50
    . . .
  • 4:50 - 4:51
and you get the minor 7.
  • 4:51 - 4:55
So, in case you hadn't noticed,
lifting off the little finger is the one that makes it 7.
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    So there's major, there's 7,
  • 4:57 - 5:01
    there's minor, there's minor 7.
  • 5:01 - 5:05
So, that's a good little trick to help you remember
the names of the different shapes,
  • 5:05 - 5:08
and now all you've got to do is practice them.
  • 5:09 - 5:13
Well I hope that you enjoy the workout
that practicing those chords is going to give you.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
    Don't be too disappointed
if you find that minor 7 chord pretty hard.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
It's a tricky little number that one.
  • 5:19 - 5:23
    Getting that barre strong enough,
holding down all of those notes,
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    it's a tough call
    and it just takes practice.
  • 5:26 - 5:30
It's all about developing that muscle
between your first finger and your thumb.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
Technique of course has a role as well,
  • 5:33 - 5:36
making sure that your barre is rolled onto the side
    and that kind of thing.
  • 5:36 - 5:40
That's still important, but, as well,
it's kind of just a strength thing.
  • 5:40 - 5:43
It's just going to take a little bit of practice.
  • 5:43 - 5:44
    So have fun with that,
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    make sure you remember
to put them into your memory.
  • 5:46 - 5:48
Don't leave them out in the cold
    in the book, you know,
  • 5:48 - 5:50
make sure you get them in there.
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    Practice them,
look at the relationship between them
  • 5:52 - 5:56
so you can see what it is that changes
between the major and the minor.
  • 5:56 - 5:59
Listen to them as well, you know.
Not a bad idea to have a listen to them
  • 5:59 - 6:02
and kind of get used to
what the different chords sound like.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
We'll be doing a bit more of that
    later on, anyway.
  • 6:05 - 6:10
Have fun, and I shall see you
for more lessons very very soon. Bye Bye.
