Time Management Solutions

  • 0:02 - 0:04
    - [Instructor] Are you
    constantly finding yourself
  • 0:04 - 0:06
    behind at work or school?
  • 0:06 - 0:07
Do you arrive at the end of the day
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    and realize you've accomplished
    nothing on your to-do list?
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    Well, odds are you're not
    very good at time management,
  • 0:13 - 0:17
and that is not doing your
    psychological health any favors.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    In fact, a study published
    in Work and Stress
  • 0:19 - 0:22
    found that workers who didn't
    productively manage their time
  • 0:22 - 0:24
felt less in control of their lives.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    Here's the good news.
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    You can get better.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    Paying attention to
    how you spend your time
  • 0:30 - 0:32
will help you manage it more effectively.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    And we're gonna help you
learn how to do just that.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    Today on WellCast, we're
    gonna get you in control
  • 0:37 - 0:39
of your day with our RAC method.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    Recording, analyzing, and changing.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
Three easy steps to great time management.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
Pause and print a copy of our
    handy WellCast day planner.
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    Finished printing?
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    Let's dive in.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    Step one, recording.
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    When you wake up tomorrow,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
note the time in your day planner.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
    As the day progresses, write
    down everything that you do.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    Yes, we mean everything.
  • 1:03 - 1:04
The ten minutes you spent getting dressed.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
The half day of productive work,
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    the hours you spent between
    social networking sites,
  • 1:09 - 1:10
    we mean it all.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Keep this up from the time you wake up
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    until you go to sleep.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    Step two, analyzing.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
At the end of the day,
    go through the schedule
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    and highlight any chunks
of time that you don't feel
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    were used productively.
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    Pick out your five biggest
    time wasters in your day.
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    Be honest with yourself.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
You spent a half an hour
    by the coffee machine
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    talking to your coworker.
  • 1:31 - 1:33
You spent an hour on Facebook,
  • 1:33 - 1:36
and you stared into space for 20 minutes.
  • 1:36 - 1:38
Come on, you get the picture.
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    Especially focus on the
    time wasters at work.
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    Why?
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    A study published by the
    British Medical Journal
  • 1:44 - 1:46
says that workplace stress is minimized
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    by effective time management.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    It also says that workplace
    stress bleeds over
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    into home life and undermines
    a relaxed life at home.
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    Here's the ugly part.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
Add up all the time you wasted.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
How much productive time did you blow
  • 2:00 - 2:03
on activities that got you no results?
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    Step three, changing.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
Now it's time to come up with
a way to get that time back.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
Here are three ways to change
    your time wasting habits
  • 2:11 - 2:14
and become a better time manager.
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    Prioritize.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
To-do lists are a really effective way
  • 2:17 - 2:20
to manage your time and your priorities.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    Limit the number of tasks
you have on this list to five
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    and assign rankings to them
    in order of importance.
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    Declutter.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    Not only is decluttering
    great for your health,
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    but you won't waste time
    digging around piles of stuff
  • 2:32 - 2:35
to find that one piece of
    paper that you really need.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    Check out our WellCast on
    clutter for some helpful tips
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    on lightening your load.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    Schedule.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
Hey, we all try to kill
    two birds with one stone.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
But odds are, multi-tasking will actually
  • 2:46 - 2:49
    just stress you out and
    delay you even more.
  • 2:49 - 2:53
    Instead, set aside blocks of
    time for individual activities.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    For each activity, set
    start and stop points.
  • 2:56 - 2:58
This way, your day is cleanly segmented.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    Then, stick to this schedule.
  • 3:00 - 3:03
Try going one week using these tips
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    to reduce your wasted time.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
At the end of a week, go figure
    out where you've improved
  • 3:07 - 3:11
    your time management skills
and how much time you've saved.
  • 3:11 - 3:12
    Let's recap.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    Today you learned how to
    manage your time better
  • 3:14 - 3:17
by using our WellCast RAC method.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    You recorded, analyzed,
    and hopefully changed
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    how you use your time.
  • 3:22 - 3:23
You did this by learning how to prioritize
  • 3:23 - 3:27
    your most important tasks,
    declutter your workspace
  • 3:27 - 3:30
to save you time, and you
    learned how to build yourself
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    an effective schedule
    to block out your day.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
Hey, how did RAC work for you?
  • 3:35 - 3:37
We want to hear how much
    time you were wasting
  • 3:37 - 3:39
and how much you're saving now.
