RSA Shorts - The Power of Empathy

  • 0:09 - 0:11
    So what is empathy?
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    And why is it very
    different than sympathy?
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    Empathy fuels connection.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    Sympathy drives disconnection.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    Empathy--it's very interesting,
  • 0:22 - 0:27
    Teresa Wiseman is a nursing
    scholar who studied professions,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    very diverse professions
    where empathy is relevant,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    and came up with four
    qualities of empathy.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    Perspective taking--
the ability to take the perspective
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    of another person or recognize
    their perspective is their truth.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    Staying out of judgement.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
Not easy, when you enjoy it
as much as most of us do.
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    Recognizing emotion in other people,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    and then communicating that.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    Empathy is feeling with people.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
And to me I always think of empathy
as this kind of sacred space
  • 0:56 - 0:59
when someone's kind of in a deep hole,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
and they shout out from the bottom
    and they say,
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    "I'm stuck. It's dark. I'm overwhelmed."
  • 1:04 - 1:06
And then we look and we say,
  • 1:06 - 1:10
    "Hey." Climb down.
"I know what it's like down here."
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    "And you're not alone."
  • 1:12 - 1:18
Sympathy is, "Ooh. It's bad. Uh-huh."
  • 1:18 - 1:22
"Uh, no. You want a sandwich?"
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    Empathy is a choice and
    it's a vulnerable choice
  • 1:27 - 1:29
because in order to connect with you,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
I have to connect with something in myself
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    that knows that feeling.
  • 1:34 - 1:39
Rarely, if ever, does an empathic
    response begin with, "at least."
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    [Laughter]
  • 1:43 - 1:44
And we do it all the time!
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    Because you know what,
someone just shared something with us
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    that's incredibly painful and
    we're trying to silver-lining it.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    I don't think that's a verb,
but I'm using it as one.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    We're trying to put the
    silver lining around it.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    So, "I had a miscarriage."
  • 1:59 - 2:01
"Oh, at least you know you
    can get pregnant."
  • 2:01 - 2:03
"I think my marriage is falling apart."
  • 2:03 - 2:06
"At least you have a marriage."
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    [Laughter]
  • 2:09 - 2:11
"John's getting kicked out of school."
  • 2:11 - 2:13
"At least Sarah is an A student."
  • 2:13 - 2:15
But one of the things we do sometimes
  • 2:15 - 2:20
    in the face of very
    difficult conversations,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
is we try to make things better.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    If I share something with
    you that's very difficult,
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    I'd rather you say,
  • 2:26 - 2:31
"Uff. I don't even know what to say
right now, I'm just so glad you told me."
  • 2:31 - 2:36
Because the truth is, rarely can a
    response make something better.
  • 2:36 - 2:43
What makes something better is connection.
