6 Tips to motivate your students with Khan Academy

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    (light music)
  • 0:06 - 0:09
    - So I've tried a variety of
    things to motivate students
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    and get them hungry to
    continue to push forward
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    and motivated to push forward.
  • 0:15 - 0:19
I have, one, shown them that
    whenever they show mastery
  • 0:19 - 0:23
    on Khan Academy, it directly
    results in better scores
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    on state tests, it directly
    results in better scores
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    in the class,
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    showing them that they
    will learn using this site.
  • 0:31 - 0:32
That has been shown across the nation
  • 0:32 - 0:34
as well as in my classroom.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    (light music)
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    - So at the beginning of the year,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
I assign the fourth grade course mastery
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    and that really sets the
    table for everything.
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    It's that march to 100%,
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    and throughout the year
    and throughout each lesson,
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    we just continue to gain
    more and more progress,
  • 0:51 - 0:54
we continue to march towards that 100%,
  • 0:54 - 0:55
and at the end of the year,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
it's always a celebration to see how far
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    the kids have come.
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    'Cause the first time
    they see it, they're like,
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    "What?" and I say, "All
    right, let's get ready
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    for fourth grade."
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    And throughout the year,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    we just try to continue
    to get better and better
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    and we try to persevere
  • 1:07 - 1:09
and we try to become really good thinkers.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    (light music)
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    - Sometimes when I present my screen
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    and solve these Khan
    Academy problems with them,
  • 1:18 - 1:21
I also like to click that button
  • 1:21 - 1:25
when I get it correct and they
see that you get it correct.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    And they like that excitement,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
like, "Ms. Gunes, you're a genius."
  • 1:30 - 1:32
    So like they like that.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
So they like to see that too,
    your teacher does that too.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
So I like to solve the
    questions together with them,
  • 1:38 - 1:42
and I like to see those
    sprinkles with them too,
  • 1:42 - 1:44
the confidence with them as well.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
So I feel like, do the Khan
    Academy assignment with students
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    to have their excitement,
    to share their excitement.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    (light music)
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    - As a basketball coach,
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    I try to relate learning
  • 1:59 - 2:02
to what happens on the court as well.
  • 2:02 - 2:03
So a lotta times, I will tell students
  • 2:03 - 2:06
that just because I can go into the gym
  • 2:06 - 2:07
and I can make one shot,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
that does not mean I am Stephen Curry.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
That doesn't mean I'm ready for the NBA.
  • 2:11 - 2:15
    It takes practice and
    having those skills show up
  • 2:15 - 2:17
over and over again, that is when you know
  • 2:17 - 2:19
that you have truly mastered your craft.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    So in the classroom,
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    even though you complete
    one assignment one time,
  • 2:24 - 2:25
that means that you're on your way,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
that you're doing some great things,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
but you have to be able to show that over
  • 2:29 - 2:31
a period of time to really show
  • 2:31 - 2:33
that you have truly mastered that concept.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    (light music)
  • 2:37 - 2:41
    - Another big, big benefit is parents.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    You get more parent involvement.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    Parents feel more confident
  • 2:44 - 2:46
'cause they can watch the videos,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
they can do a couple of problems,
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    and when they're helping their
    child with their homework,
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    then it's like, "I know
    what I'm helping them with.
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    I'm not playing a guessing
    game or Googling something
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    and Google have all these
    different ways to do it."
  • 3:00 - 3:02
They can just go to Khan Academy
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    and they can find out
this one way to do it.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    (light music)
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    - Now the learning's less
about what I want them to do
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    and it's way more about
    where the students have voice
  • 3:14 - 3:16
and choice and drive and passion.
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    And I tell you what,
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    when they get 100%, it's
    like fireworks going off
  • 3:20 - 3:22
in the classroom because it's hard.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
It's rigorous and they've earned it,
  • 3:24 - 3:28
and that earning is just, oh,
    just it's so motivational.
