Mission 360 TV - The Three Pioneers
-
0:08 - 0:14For 45 years the country of Albania existed
under the iron shadow of communism. -
0:14 - 0:20It was a particularly vitriolic type of communism
that banished all forms of religion totally -
0:20 - 0:27from society, except for the religion of atheism.
Today the new, young, fledgling Seventh-day -
0:27 - 0:32Adventist church is growing despite many challenges.
-
0:32 - 0:35That and much more coming up on today's program.
-
0:59 - 1:04Hello and welcome to Mission 360Ë coming
to you today from the bright afternoon sun -
1:04 - 1:12in Tirana, the capital city of Albania. We'll be focusing on mission here in Albania on today's program.
-
1:12 - 1:19It's a very young fledgling church that only
began in the early 1990s after the fall of communism. -
1:19 - 1:24We'll be talking to the mission president
- a missionary from the country in El Salvador. -
1:24 - 1:31We'll also be talking to one of just two ordained
Albanian Seventh-day Adventist pastors -
1:31 - 1:35working in this country. We'll also be traveling to the country of Belize.
-
1:35 - 1:41But first up, lets meet three global mission pioneers working in South Africa.
-
1:43 - 1:50Three pioneers, one common job! Gift, Steward
and Moeketsi are an energetic Global Mission -
1:50 - 1:56pioneer team with a mission to reach the city
of Pretoria, South Africa. These men understand -
1:56 - 2:01the local context; they speak different African
languages, and they are ready to creatively -
2:01 - 2:04face the mission challenge.
-
2:04 - 2:10Daily they look for an opportunity to relate
to people. Some they encounter door-to-door. -
2:10 - 2:14Others they are only able to talk to during
a work-break at the gas station. -
2:14 - 2:20Pollen works here, for a few weeks he has been actively learning the Bible with the three pioneers.
-
2:20 - 2:25One of the many important life lessons Pollen
has learned, is to share the knowledge of -
2:25 - 2:30Jesus with friends. And before long he invited
Maria, a co-worker to study with him. -
2:30 - 2:35Now, they are both waiting to finish their last
lesson before baptism. -
2:38 - 2:45In Pretoria there are many train preachers.
It's a common sight while traveling by train. -
2:45 - 2:50Pioneer Steward frequently travels by train
and one day he decided to address the many -
2:50 - 2:56misconceptions presented as he rode the train.
But instead of confronting train preachers, -
2:56 - 3:01he chose another wagon where he speaks directly
from the Bible on a daily basis. -
3:01 - 3:06He always prays with the fellow riders and has found
encouragement through the growth he has seen -
3:06 - 3:09on regular commuters in his 'church wagon.'
-
3:09 - 3:16And so far I have discovered that many
people have benefited from these presentations -
3:16 - 3:25because right now they are able to identify
who is saying the truth and who is saying -
3:25 - 3:34false doctrine. Because people are beginning
to even follow me wherever they see me getting -
3:34 - 3:40into a coach. People are now knowing me and
they follow me. Some audience they follow -
3:40 - 3:47because they want to learn more about what
I am presenting. -
3:47 - 3:52As the three pioneers dodge traffic, navigate
crowds and climb endless sets of stairs in -
3:52 - 3:57the city's towering apartment buildings.
They know God is working with them to find -
3:57 - 4:01hearts hungry for truth and hope.
-
4:01 - 4:06One day the three pioneers met an interesting
woman. As usual they spoke kindly with her -
4:06 - 4:08and gave her a study guide.
-
4:08 - 4:15I introduced the lessons and she showed
interest in these lessons. And in two days -
4:15 - 4:20after I left there, she called me because
I supplied my contact number on the lessons. -
4:20 - 4:26She said come I am done with your lessons. You
know, I went back there thinking that in two -
4:26 - 4:30days? I know people can take a month, some
weeks to complete them. But in two days she -
4:30 - 4:35was done. I went there and took the lessons
and I marked them. You know when I was marking -
4:35 - 4:39them I could see that really she read them.
-
4:39 - 4:43The pioneer team was surprised to see that
this woman had been up all night studying -
4:43 - 4:48all of the lessons. She couldn't put
them down. Although tired she still had many -
4:48 - 4:55questions about the Bible, God, salvation
and prophecy. So Gift, Steward and Moeketsi -
4:55 - 5:00continued to visit her house and strengthen
her faith. It was clear that the Holy Spirit -
5:00 - 5:04was moving her heart and mind towards God.
-
5:04 - 5:09The spirit of the Lord is always working
in people's lives. -
5:09 - 5:16We had people who are willing to come to
the church. Some have already decided that -
5:16 - 5:18they are coming to church.
-
5:18 - 5:24In fact, during the past 2 years the pioneers
have studied the Bible with some 1,500 people -
5:24 - 5:30and baptized more than 200 of them. Through
this they started two new branch churches -
5:30 - 5:35and they are encouraged to continue reaching
many more for the kingdom of God. -
5:35 - 5:41Thank you for your prayers and financial support
of Global Mission pioneers across the world. -
5:41 - 5:45They are making a difference in reaching the cities!
-
5:46 - 5:51I'm talking with pastor Leo Espana and we
are in Albania where pastor Leo, you are serving -
5:51 - 5:53as the president of the mission
-
5:53 - 5:57plus you are also pastoring a church in this city.
-
5:57 - 5:59How many years have you been pastoring a church here?
-
5:59 - 6:05I came here in 2008, end of 2008 and since
then I've been pastoring here in the church of DurrĂŤs. -
6:05 - 6:07How many people do you have worshiping?
-
6:07 - 6:12We have an average of 30 people to 35 people coming every Sabbath.
-
6:12 - 6:18Now this is a port city obviously, now what
happened here in the early 1990s? -
6:18 - 6:24Well this is a city very important. It is the second largest city of Albania and
-
6:24 - 6:26also it's important because for the harbor.
-
6:26 - 6:30Just across we have Italy about three
hundred kilometers from here and the city of Bari. -
6:30 - 6:36After communist time, many Albanians
wanted to go away from Albania and to know -
6:36 - 6:38other countries and to look for a better
living. -
6:38 - 6:41So many people came here and try to go to
Italy. -
6:41 - 6:46Right, in his pictures of boats that are
just full of people trying to get away. -
6:46 - 6:49It happened just right here. Yes exactly. This is the place.
-
6:49 - 6:55Now in the last did a couple days we've seen
global mission projects here in Albania. -
6:55 - 6:58What are the good things that are happening here?
-
6:58 - 7:03Well we thank God because the best thing
that can happen in Albania is people coming to Jesus. -
7:03 - 7:09And through the Global Mission projects we have
seen that people are coming. For example here -
7:09 - 7:15in the church in DurrĂŤs, one of our projects
is to run language courses, Spanish, English. -
7:15 - 7:20And people like to learn languages
and they have come. We have a computer lab there and -
7:20 - 7:27people come and they register and then once they
are learning they say what is here? -
7:27 - 7:32What are you doing here? I say well, this is
a church and we also teach about the Bible -
7:32 - 7:34and we invite them to come.
-
7:34 - 7:37So you're really a center of influence in this city.
-
7:37 - 7:43In the heart of the city. Wonderful.
Now I have heard you speaking Albanian. -
7:43 - 7:47And it seems to me that you speak it very
well but that is not your language, where are you from? -
7:48 - 7:51I'm originally from El Salvador, Central America.
-
7:51 - 7:55So what is a family from El Salvador doing
in Albania? -
7:55 - 8:01Well as you know Gary, God has plans for all
of us and once we decide to follow His will -
8:01 - 8:06He knows where he wants you to be. We are serving as missionaries is here with my wife.
-
8:06 - 8:08My wife is from Honduras.
-
8:08 - 8:14And by the way are we have two children and
one of our just five months old. -
8:14 - 8:16We have a baby girl born in Albania.
-
8:16 - 8:19What a blessing.
-
8:19 - 8:22What are your plans for the future here in Albania?
-
8:22 - 8:27Well we want to see the church grow
much more. We have many cities that still -
8:27 - 8:33have not been penetrated. Even though the Adventist church is in most of the main
-
8:33 - 8:37cities here in Albania with the lacking to
penetrate north Albania and very south of -
8:37 - 8:44Albania, cities that need to be rich for Jesus.
-
8:44 - 8:48We recently started a new global mission project in the city of Fier as well.
-
8:48 - 8:54Well very good, now after many years, 45-47
years of communism where religion was banished, -
8:57 - 9:01there's a high rate of atheism in this country
is that still the case? -
9:01 - 9:06Yes there are still some people that are skeptical
to religion. Others that just don't want -
9:06 - 9:10to talk about God. However, people are more open
-
9:10 - 9:16now to the gospel and I believe that that's
an opportunity or for us to spread the gospel here. -
9:16 - 9:22Now, what about pastors. How many Albanian pastors do you have?
-
9:22 - 9:29Okay we have presently three Albanian pastors.
One is our secretary of the mission as well -
9:29 - 9:35but he's also a pastor in the central
church in Tirana. Pastor Julian Castrati. -
9:35 - 9:39We have also pastor Genti who is in Albasar that you recently visited.
-
9:39 - 9:44And we have a pastor who is in the church plant in Fier, the city
-
9:44 - 9:49that I just mentioned to you. He was previously
working in Korcha and now is has moved to work -
9:49 - 9:51in the church plant in Fier.
-
9:51 - 9:54So you have a small team in a big task?
-
9:54 - 10:00Yes you said so. We understand what it means
when Jesus said that we need to pray for more laborers. -
10:00 - 10:05So what would you say is the biggest mission challenge facing you here?
-
10:05 - 10:12I believe we need to be more
open to the to the community still. -
10:13 - 10:17We need to get to know people, Albanians need to know who the Adventists are.
-
10:17 - 10:22We thank God for ADRA because ADRA International
was the first NGO organization that came -
10:22 - 10:27to the country. But also we need to spread
more. -
10:27 - 10:35The most well-known religion here in Albania
is Islam, an Greek Orthodox church and Catholicism -
10:35 - 10:40is 10 percent and then we are not that well-known, so we need to work
-
10:40 - 10:45more on that. I will say that as Adventists we
still need to invest in Albania, in education, -
10:45 - 10:52in health. We don't have a school here yet. We don't have any hospital
-
10:53 - 10:58or clinic even though with ADRA we've been working with that, with health as well.
-
10:58 - 11:03But we still need to get to know more, the Adventists in the community.
-
11:03 - 11:09Pastor Leo, thank you so much for sharing
with us. And viewers at home please -
11:09 - 11:15remember the challenge here in Albania. Remember
pastor Leo and his team as they follow -
11:15 - 11:20God's leading as they seek to build His kingdom right here in Albania.
-
11:20 - 11:23We've got more mission coming
up right after this break. -
11:30 - 11:37Welcome back and I'm delighted to be talking
to pastor Julian here in Tirana, Albania. -
11:38 - 11:43Summer's day, sun is coming down and pasto Julian, you were one of the founding members
-
11:43 - 11:50of the Adventist church here in this country. In fact, you were one of the first ordained Seventh-day Adventist pastors.
-
11:51 - 11:56We're standing in from of this building. Describe it and tell me the significance of it to you.
-
11:56 - 12:03Okay this building very, very significant.
It's personal but it's also much more than that. -
12:03 - 12:09This building we call it the pyramid
but it was built originally in the late 80s -
12:09 - 12:16as a memory a for the legacy of our communist dictator. He is infamous all
-
12:16 - 12:20around the world the notorious because he is the
-
12:20 - 12:24author of banning religion completely and for Albania becoming the first atheist
-
12:24 - 12:30country in the world. And it's very ironic
and iconic, I would say, that this building, -
12:32 - 12:39in this very building, that we have had the
evangelistic meetings, the very first ones run -
12:39 - 12:47by Pastor David Currie from Australia and
this is the meeting where Meryl Pagica -
12:47 - 12:50probably you know the famous story I think all around the world,
-
12:50 - 12:56her story is well known and I also got baptized
in this very building inside. -
12:56 - 13:01Okay, this story, this was a lady who had remained faithful through the years have communism.
-
13:01 - 13:03Tell us briefly the story.
-
13:03 - 13:06Her story was very became famous in the GC Session
-
13:06 - 13:11in 1985 but I think it's time maybe for the
even for the younger generation of -
13:11 - 13:14Adventists to know her story because
it's a beautiful story. -
13:14 - 13:21Here's a lady, she was a member of the Daniel
Lewis small group back in the 30s. -
13:21 - 13:25When he became a martyr in the 50s he was tortured by the communist regime.
-
13:25 - 13:30She kept seeing him in prison. She loved the Lord but Daniel was pharmacist.
-
13:30 - 13:37He was not an ordained minister so she
couldn't get baptized. And she waited 47 -
13:38 - 13:45years, be exact, for the day until
she could get baptized. She was baptized by -
13:45 - 13:53David Currie. Not just that she waited for
45 years, she collected her tithe regularly -
13:53 - 14:01every month and she handed it into the General
Conference officials back in 1992. Very touching story. -
14:01 - 14:03So she just kept storing it away through
those years. -
14:03 - 14:11She kept storing it away. With that money at that time in Albania, she could have bought a beautiful villa anywhere they like
-
14:11 - 14:13but she was so faithful to the Lord.
-
14:13 - 14:18And she said I have this three dreams
I want to return the tithe to the church to -
14:18 - 14:23the Seventh-day Adventist Church, to my church.
I want to get baptized and I want to see a -
14:23 - 14:25church building in Tirana.
-
14:25 - 14:30Wonderful now you were attending the meetings,
you started doing Bible studies but it -
14:30 - 14:33was her baptism that really influenced you
what happened? -
14:33 - 14:38Absolutely, I was the from the very beginning I was fascinated by
-
14:38 - 14:45the amazing Discoveries series. It was
just beautiful. I accepted all the doctrines -
14:45 - 14:48but you know there was something when you're
a first generation Adventist, -
14:48 - 14:53When you hear the name Seventh-day Adventist
it seems a little bit that's a bizarre or -
14:53 - 15:00a bit strange. So I had some misgivings,
should I get baptized. So I was very -
15:00 - 15:06close that I had not made the final decision.
But I was there on the 18th of April 1992 -
15:06 - 15:13and I was right there in this building inside
and when David introduced her in front of -
15:13 - 15:20all of us and I was just there, I was two meters
away from from her, from the baptistry and -
15:21 - 15:26when I saw her praising the Lord with her
face you know up to the heavens just like -
15:26 - 15:32that and saying praise be and glory to the
King, I waited 45 years for this day. -
15:32 - 15:39I was like wow, this lady there must
be, if she waited that long there must be something -
15:39 - 15:44very special about this church. This must
be the true Church of God. I better join -
15:44 - 15:48this church sooner than later and I was baptized
the next the following Sabbath. -
15:48 - 15:50Amazing, beautiful story.
-
15:50 - 15:54And I was we were all crying. It was probably the first time I was really crying like a
-
15:54 - 15:59a little baby. I was a teenager at that
time. Very touching story. -
15:59 - 16:03And that's what made me well who I am
now and we're all shaped -
16:03 - 16:05and we all learned from her example.
-
16:05 - 16:12Wonderful, wonderful story. Now Julian, you
grew up as a kid in an environment where atheism -
16:12 - 16:13was a religion. What was that like?
-
16:13 - 16:20It was very strange you know very interesting
because in school we learned about evolution -
16:20 - 16:26and there is no God then all this are fairy
tales and stupid stories and so on and so forth. -
16:26 - 16:30You know my mom very interestingly very secretly
even though she was a math -
16:30 - 16:35and physics teacher she will tell me secretly look there is a God, don't listen to the
-
16:35 - 16:42communists. Now she was her family was persecuted
by the communist regime but it was a very strange. -
16:42 - 16:47It was it's felt like there was something
lacking you know in your life growing it's -
16:47 - 16:54like your empty there is no you're just you
feel like we are all like animals, apes. -
16:54 - 16:57And survival of the fittest, that kind of thing.
-
16:57 - 17:03And then you know it was difficult.
And you see the consequences, and the long -
17:03 - 17:08transition, the corruption, the organized crime that has plagued this country for decades.
-
17:08 - 17:15There's a direct consequence of that lack
of the fear of God you know for all those 30-40 years in Albania was staunchly atheistic. -
17:15 - 17:22So when you see the popularity of the New Atheists
-
17:22 - 17:28at the moment it how do you react with your background?
-
17:28 - 17:35For me it is so sad to see this new, this new atheism movement and so on and so forth.
-
17:35 - 17:39It has brought nothing but you know destruction,
-
17:39 - 17:45tears, pain, disillusionment, corruption.
It's brought the worst, I think, that -
17:45 - 17:47human nature can bring about.
-
17:47 - 17:53And it's just something that a is very sad and
we never want to see, no Albanian wants to go -
17:53 - 17:59back to those years when there was no
God presently a society where you see churches -
17:59 - 18:05being burned and being destroyed. When people, when you imprison people because
-
18:05 - 18:11they read the Bible and that's just something awful and there's so much lost in humanity
-
18:11 - 18:14from that kind of horrible idealology.
-
18:14 - 18:21Julian you're the secretary of the Albanian
mission. You're one only two ordained Seventh-day -
18:21 - 18:28Adventist pastors working in this country.
What is your hope and dream for this country? -
18:29 - 18:35My dream is very similar, it resembles
some Niropigika's to have a beautiful -
18:35 - 18:40blossoming church here, to extend the kingdom
of God in this country which so badly I think -
18:40 - 18:46more than any other place in in Europe,
needs God because it's been so dried up. -
18:46 - 18:53It's been so been really so thirsty for the Word of God and I want
-
18:55 - 19:00to see the church grow. We have the youngest church in Europe, probably in the world
-
19:00 - 19:07in terms of our membership. We are very encouraged
to see a growing active lay-membership -
19:09 - 19:15movement and we are so thrilled to continue to work here. To have Church in
-
19:15 - 19:22every major town and then to extend all around the country and where we can take the three
-
19:23 - 19:25angels messages.
-
19:25 - 19:31Fantastic, thank you so much and please continue to remember church leaders, pastors, lay people here in
-
19:31 - 19:38Albania in your prayers. You know they have
many challenges and they need a world church -
19:38 - 19:39that is praying for them.
-
19:39 - 19:46Next up, let's go to the country Belize.
-
19:46 - 19:51On this Sabbath in northern Belize, police
have set up a checkpoint in front of the Adventist -
19:51 - 19:58Church. Their church sits right along the
busiest road in town. A group of church members -
19:58 - 20:04a plan something special to reach out to their
community and the traffic stop plays an important role. -
20:04 - 20:11It's not a big city but this is where
the most cars and pedestrians pass by. -
20:12 - 20:17Since this is the traffic hot spot of the area sometimes
the police have checkpoints. They will check -
20:17 - 20:20for seatbelts, registration, and anything else regarding the
-
20:20 - 20:25driver safety. But this is not an ordinary
traffic checkpoint. The church members use -
20:25 - 20:32this as an opportunity to share about Jesus.
As the police stop the cars, the church -
20:32 - 20:38members pass out Christian magazines and books.
Young and old take part in this activity. -
20:38 - 20:45Drivers are pleasantly surprised as they stop
and receive an unexpected gift. -
20:45 - 20:52The drivers also have an opportunity to pull over and
enjoy a free concert put on by the church's pathfinder club. -
20:52 - 20:56Many enjoy this unique event
and the cars are piling up. -
20:56 - 21:03The Adventist group working alongside the pathfinder's is called Manos Del Rey or Hands of the King.
-
21:03 - 21:09Manos Del Rey was started as an outreach group
in Belize. They build churches, hold community -
21:09 - 21:14events, and do whatever it takes to share about Jesus.
-
21:14 - 21:20The members in this group range in age groups.
Rinaldo, Jeremy, and Rodolfo are cousins. -
21:20 - 21:23They love being part of Manos Del Rey.
-
21:23 - 21:29During the week they love to swim, play soccer, and be a part of other events like these.
-
21:29 - 21:36These boys have fun passing out magazines to drivers.
-
21:36 - 21:40It doesn't matter if it's a small car or a huge truck.
-
21:40 - 21:45Rinaldo is eager to make sure people have the opportunity to hear about Jesus.
-
21:45 - 21:51Even though some people refuse to take the
magazines, Rinaldo is not discouraged. -
21:51 - 21:57He continues to work with enthusiasm. He even
makes sure the police officers have -
21:57 - 22:03magazines to take home with them. This is
just one of many events the group plans. -
22:03 - 22:08It involves everyone in the important task reaching
the hearts of the Belizian people. -
22:08 - 22:16As a result of the events like these many people have come to know Jesus and are attending the local church.
-
22:16 - 22:22Once they hear the message a lay church member will visit their home and study the Bible with them.
-
22:22 - 22:26The churches here get so full that new churches are needed throughout Belize.
-
22:26 - 22:32That's where Manos Del Rey comes back into the picture. They help them build a new church.
-
22:32 - 22:40They work tirelessly to fill the demand a building requests. Shortly after one building is finished, construction begins on the next.
-
22:40 - 22:47Church members throughout Belize are constantly looking for opportunities to share God's love.
-
22:47 - 22:52Please pray for the members in Belize. Pray
that they will continue to reach their community -
22:52 - 22:57and teach them about Jesus. And thank you
for supporting mission. -

continue to pray for frontline mission workers, -
23:25 - 23:31global mission pioneers, church planters,

- Mission 360 TV - The Three Pioneers
- Description:
-
For 45 years the country of Albania existed under the iron shadow of communism. It was a particularly vitriolic type of communism that banished all forms of religion totally from society except for the religion of atheism. Today the new, young, fledgling Seventh-day Adventist church is growing despite many challenges.
