The Time Trainer Metronome App by JustinGuitar - Promo Video
-
0:05 - 0:07Hi, how're you doing? Justin here.
-
0:07 - 0:10In this video today we're gonna be checking out my new app
-
0:10 - 0:13which is the Justinguitar Time Trainer Metronome.
-
0:13 - 0:16It is a metronome - but it's got a whole heap more to it.
-
0:16 - 0:19It's got three training tools which are gonna really help you develop
-
0:19 - 0:22your own internal sense of time.
-
0:22 - 0:24Now I'm gonna give you the quick spill about them now
-
0:24 - 0:27for those who don't wanna sit through the whole ten minute explanation.
-
0:27 - 0:29There's three training modes.
-
0:29 - 0:32The first one is called "Bar Breaks"
-
0:32 - 0:35which basically stops the beat for a bar or more
-
0:35 - 0:38which is a great rhythm guitar development tool.
-
0:38 - 0:41So you'll be playing along for three bars with the click
-
0:41 - 0:42and then it's gonna stop for a bar,
-
0:42 - 0:46you have to keep time and then be playing perfectly in sync
-
0:46 - 0:48when the beat starts again.
-
0:48 - 0:52For one bar it's not too bad but two, three, four bars is getting harder,
-
0:52 - 0:54up to eight bars, that's gonna be a real tough one.
-
0:54 - 0:55Mainly I use it for rhythm guitar
-
0:55 - 0:59but you can use it for scales or to improv or solo guitar - whatever.
-
0:59 - 1:03It's a really good one for developing that kind of your own internal sense of time
-
1:03 - 1:06which is a really, really important thing to develop.
-
1:06 - 1:09Second training tool is the "Random Beat Drop".
-
1:09 - 1:11A lot of guys get, when they're playing with the metronome a lot,
-
1:11 - 1:14really rely on that click to be playing in time.
-
1:14 - 1:20So what this one does is gradually and slowly and randomly start muting the metronome clicks.
-
1:20 - 1:23And you'll find it when you're practicing along with it,
-
1:23 - 1:26you gradually get used to the metronome not being there.
-
1:26 - 1:29It's kind of removing the safety blanket slowly.
-
1:29 - 1:31Great one for doing with your scales as well.
-
1:31 - 1:34So, you know, you should be practicing with a normal metronome, too, on my app.
-
1:34 - 1:36That is really important.
-
1:36 - 1:38We've got one of those built into this of course but
-
1:38 - 1:40the "Random Beat Drops" are really a good kind of,
-
1:40 - 1:45you know, it gets you out of just really religiously always playing with the metronome, you know,
-
1:45 - 1:47- which is a very important skill.
-
1:47 - 1:50And the third one, which is one that I've wanted in a metronome for years and years,
-
1:50 - 1:54I've called it the "Speed-Upper" which basically is:
-
1:54 - 1:57start tempo and end tempo and a duration
-
1:57 - 2:00and it's gonna gradually speed up from one tempo to the next tempo
-
2:00 - 2:03over the course of that five minutes or whatever.
-
2:03 - 2:05You can go from 80 to 100 or whatever
-
2:05 - 2:10which is a really, really, super-dooper useful thing for your practice time.
-
2:10 - 2:13You know, I'm using it everyday for my own practice as well.
-
2:13 - 2:14It's a great thing.
-
2:14 - 2:17Of course, it is a full-featured metronome as well.
-
2:17 - 2:20We have accents, a few different sounds, tap tempo
-
2:20 - 2:23and our audio engine is extremely accurate.
-
2:23 - 2:26Most of the apps that I've seen around are not very accurate at all.
-
2:26 - 2:28In fact, some of them shouldn't really be even for sale, I think,
-
2:28 - 2:31'cause they're probably damaging more than help you by playing along with them.
-
2:31 - 2:33The beats were all over the place
-
2:33 - 2:36and some of the tempos were completely mislabeled as well.
-
2:36 - 2:37So you think that you're going along with 140
-
2:37 - 2:39and you're actually going at about 110 or something.
-
2:39 - 2:41It can be pretty drastic.
-
2:41 - 2:43So just be careful with that.
-
2:43 - 2:45I'm not trying to do the big sale on my one
-
2:45 - 2:47but my one works and if you do decide to go for a different one
-
2:47 - 2:49I'd do a little bit of checking-up to make sure
-
2:49 - 2:52that it's working good and that it's accurate, too.
-
2:52 - 2:54So, now we're gonna go to a close-up
-
2:54 - 2:56and I'm gonna show you all of the features
-
2:56 - 2:57and how to use this thing.
-
2:57 - 2:58I hope you enjoy it.
-
2:58 - 2:59It's available from the Appstore
-
2:59 - 3:02and, as I said, from the Android Store some time very soon.
-
3:03 - 3:08OK, here we go for an in-depth look at the Justinguitar Time Trainer Metronome.
-
3:08 - 3:11We start, of course, by clicking on that little icon,
-
3:11 - 3:13quick splash screen and we're onto the main page
-
3:13 - 3:17which has the little swinging metronome head-thing,
-
3:17 - 3:20the pendulum, the little bit grill behind will light up with the beat.
-
3:20 - 3:24Next line down we've got the tempo which is in beats per minute.
-
3:24 - 3:27The minus button, of course, will slow the tempo
-
3:27 - 3:29and the plus button will increase the tempo.
-
3:29 - 3:32Something slightly...there's obviously...
-
3:32 - 3:35just pressing and holding will move in increments of ten
-
3:35 - 3:36from whatever you want.
-
3:36 - 3:39So it can be usefull if you're trying to change tempo quickly.
-
3:39 - 3:41We've got a mute button.
-
3:41 - 3:44Pretty obvious, it's gonna make the metronome silent when you hit that.
-
3:44 - 3:47And underneath here we've got a volume control
-
3:47 - 3:48which is a volume slider.
-
3:48 - 3:54It's also controllable by using the plus and minus volume buttons
-
3:54 - 3:58on the actual iPod itself - or iPhone or whatever it is that you're using.
-
3:58 - 4:01We're gonna leave the Trainer just for a second.
-
4:01 - 4:03We've got over here a tap tempo.
-
4:03 - 4:06Very, very useful when you're trying to figure out the speed of a song.
-
4:06 - 4:08If you literally just start tapping that:
-
4:08 - 4:13Each time you tap, it's gonna be doing an average of the taps that you've done.
-
4:13 - 4:16So we've just covered that one with 97
-
4:16 - 4:19if we hit play it should be more or less the same tempo
-
4:19 - 4:22which is a really great feature when you're trying to work out stuff
-
4:22 - 4:25you know, trying to work out a tune or whatever.
-
4:25 - 4:27It's a really important feature.
-
4:27 - 4:29Underneath that we've got the accent.
-
4:29 - 4:33So, accent is controling a louder or slightly different note
-
4:33 - 4:35to let you know where you are in the bar.
-
4:35 - 4:38So, in normal playing you're gonna be in 4/4
-
4:38 - 4:40which is gonna give you an accent on beat 1 -
-
4:40 - 4:452,3,4, 1,2,3,4...
-
4:45 - 4:47You can hear, it's just a slightly different note.
-
4:47 - 4:52Now, if you are playing in 5/4, you just hit that once to make the accent 5.
-
4:52 - 4:55Anything to do with 3, you'd move it down-
-
4:55 - 4:58sorry, I'm having trouble touching the right thing
-
4:58 - 4:59'cause I'm looking at it from kinda behind
-
5:01 - 5:02but anyway, there we go - so if we've got it on 3:
-
5:03 - 5:041,2,3...
-
5:04 - 5:06We've got a little waltz thing going on, right?
-
5:06 - 5:09So, that's the accent control.
-
5:09 - 5:11Now all of this is changeable in the settings.
-
5:11 - 5:13So if you click the little top icon there
-
5:13 - 5:15you've got a range of different sounds,
-
5:15 - 5:17the default sound we were just listening to,
-
5:17 - 5:20MPC, cowbell, more cowbell and wood.
-
5:20 - 5:23And you can also independently control the volume of the beat
-
5:23 - 5:25and the volume of the accent.
-
5:25 - 5:28So, that's a really useful thing to be able to do as well.
-
5:28 - 5:32Now, the big thing with this is the "Time Trainer", it's the training modes.
-
5:32 - 5:37If we hit the "training mode" we get a little training mode menu options.
-
5:37 - 5:39So, we've got "trainer off", of course
-
5:39 - 5:43and we've got "Bar Breaks", "Random Beat Drop" and the "Speed-Upper".
-
5:43 - 5:45So we're gonna start with "Bar Breaks"
-
5:45 - 5:47which is probably the most useful, I think,
-
5:47 - 5:49of the three that I'm using a lot still
-
5:49 - 5:54and have been using for many years just in another way, using ProTools.
-
5:54 - 5:58We hit the "edit" button and we have the kind of most important settings
-
5:58 - 6:00that you can use for these "Bar Breaks".
-
6:00 - 6:03The first thing is "bars solid at start".
-
6:03 - 6:06Now, whenever you're gonna be making the metronome silent for a while
-
6:06 - 6:08or you're having a bar break,
-
6:08 - 6:10you really wanna make sure, at the beginning of the exercise
-
6:10 - 6:13that you got a good number of bars to get yourself in the groove properly
-
6:13 - 6:15and that you're feeling the tempo well.
-
6:15 - 6:20So at least four bars I would suggest as a "bars solid at start"-setting.
-
6:20 - 6:23We've got "random mute off" for the trainer,
-
6:23 - 6:25I'll explain that in a second.
-
6:25 - 6:27then we've got "bars solid" and "bars muted".
-
6:27 - 6:30Now, this is a good default setting for you if you're starting off with this.
-
6:30 - 6:33It's gonna be playing the metronome as normal for three bars
-
6:33 - 6:36and then it's going to mute the metronome for one bar
-
6:36 - 6:40and come back in again for three bars solid, then muted for one bar.
-
6:40 - 6:42So, it gives you a chance to get in the groove
-
6:42 - 6:44and then it's gonna be muted and you've gotta try
-
6:44 - 6:46and stay in time so when the metronome comes back in
-
6:46 - 6:48you're perfectly synchronised with the click.
-
6:48 - 6:50This is a great exercise.
-
6:50 - 6:53Really, really solid thing to be doing.
-
6:53 - 6:55It'll help your internal time a lot.
-
6:55 - 6:57There's also "random bar mute".
-
6:57 - 7:02If you select that as being on, you can then select a random bar mute percentage.
-
7:02 - 7:04So if you click on that you might have,
-
7:04 - 7:08say, 50% which would mean that half of the bars are going to be randomly muted.
-
7:08 - 7:11That might mean you get two in a row and then one or three in a row
-
7:11 - 7:13and then a couple on and a couple off
-
7:13 - 7:17'cause it's random. It's not on/off/on/off.
-
7:17 - 7:19But I don't recommend you use that to start off with.
-
7:19 - 7:20I think as a good starting setting
-
7:20 - 7:24you want the "bars solid" at three, "bars muted" at one
-
7:24 - 7:26and the "bars solid at start" set to four.
-
7:26 - 7:29You go back from here now.
-
7:29 - 7:31When you leave this one to go back to the thing,
-
7:31 - 7:33if you've changed anything, you wanna hit the "done" button,
-
7:33 - 7:34not the "back" button.
-
7:34 - 7:36That's really important, otherwise your settings won't work.
-
7:36 - 7:40So, I'm gonna turn the tempo right up here for a second
-
7:40 - 7:42just so you can clearly hear what's going on.
-
7:42 - 7:46And then we hit play, we'll have four bars solid, then three bars solid
-
7:46 - 7:48one bar off, three bars solid, one bar off.
-
7:48 - 7:54So here we go,play: 1,2,3,4, 2,2,3,4, 3,2,3,4, 4,2,3 ...
-
7:54 - 8:00now here: 1,2,3,4, 2,2,3,4, 3,2,3,4, stop, 2,3,4
-
8:00 - 8:061..., 2..., 3..., stop,2,3,4, 1...
-
8:06 - 8:08...and then you're back on again.
-
8:08 - 8:09You can see what it's doing then.
-
8:09 - 8:11Now at that speed the break wasn't very long
-
8:11 - 8:14but you can imagine that at a normal speed or at a lot slower
-
8:14 - 8:17that that break is gonna feel a lot longer than that and especially...
-
8:17 - 8:20One bar, you shouldn't have too many problems with, two bars is a little bit more tricky,
-
8:20 - 8:24as soon as you get above four bars, it can be quite difficult.
-
8:24 - 8:27So I'm hoping that you'll enjoy that kinda challenge when you get to that.
-
8:27 - 8:30So that's the first of the training modes.
-
8:30 - 8:33The second one: "Random Beat Drop".
-
8:33 - 8:37A lotta guitar players really struggle when the metronome click's not there.
-
8:37 - 8:38They got really used to it.
-
8:38 - 8:40When really the metronome should be guiding you on your tempo
-
8:40 - 8:43you shouldn't be kinda chasing it or waiting for it, you know?
-
8:43 - 8:46So what you should...the idea with this one is that
-
8:46 - 8:51a certain percentage of the beats, they're gonna just completely disappear.
-
8:51 - 8:54So this is a kinda of a good starting setting.
-
8:54 - 8:57So we've got a gradual interval of five minutes
-
8:57 - 8:59and gradual is turned on, of course.
-
8:59 - 9:02So over the course of five minutes it's gonna start with 100% on
-
9:02 - 9:07and then gradually up to 30% of the beats are gonna disappear.
-
9:07 - 9:11Now, just for the point of this little demo here, I'm gonna select it as being one minute.
-
9:11 - 9:15and I'm gonna turn the beats muted up to 90%
-
9:15 - 9:17just so you can really hear what's going on here.
-
9:17 - 9:23If we go back and "done", 'cause we've changed stuff and then hit play:
-
9:23 - 9:291,2,3,4 ...,2,3,4 ....,2,3,4
-
9:29 - 9:30So, a lot of them are there to start off with
-
9:30 - 9:34but over the course of one minute, more and more of them are disappearing
-
9:34 - 9:39and the idea would be that you keep playing your scale through this
-
9:39 - 9:42and keep managing 'cause when those clicks do happen
-
9:42 - 9:44you should be perfectly synchronised with them.
-
9:44 - 9:46It's a really, really great fun exercise.
-
9:46 - 9:52Cause especially in this 90%-kinda target area it does get pretty difficult, you know?
-
9:52 - 9:54But that's the whole point.
-
9:54 - 9:55If it would be easy, it wouldn't be a very good game, would it?
-
9:55 - 10:03So, that's the "Random Beat Drop" training tool.
-
10:03 - 10:05And this last one: The "Speed-Upper".
-
10:05 - 10:07Now, this one's pretty obvious.
-
10:07 - 10:11We got a start tempo, an end tempo and the practice duration.
-
10:11 - 10:13So, most times you gonna be practicing five minutes.
-
10:13 - 10:16Again I'm gonna just drop it down to one minute now
-
10:16 - 10:17just to show you the exercise.
-
10:17 - 10:23And usually, if I was practicing for five minutes, 60 to 90 might be a reasonable kind of a jump to make.
-
10:23 - 10:26If you're right at the top of your performance level
-
10:26 - 10:29it might be 80 to 90 or whatever, you know?
-
10:29 - 10:31I'm gonna make it a bit more extreme again
-
10:31 - 10:34just for this demo here.
-
10:34 - 10:38Let's all make it up to 140, let's say,
-
10:38 - 10:41over one minute. So we've selected that. "Done".
-
10:41 - 10:45So we're gonna start at 60, end up at 140, over a minute.
-
10:45 - 10:48which is, like I said, rather extreme.
-
10:48 - 10:51You'll see, when I hit play now, the tempo is gonna go down . We've lost our plus and minus buttons
-
10:51 - 10:54because we're in this "Speed-Upper" training mode.
-
10:54 - 10:58We hit play, started at 60.
-
10:58 - 11:00Now, it's not going up every bar, it's going up mathematically
-
11:00 - 11:03over the time period that you set which in this case was a minute.
-
11:03 - 11:08You can see, it's already picking up because we've gotta get all of the way up to 140
-
11:08 - 11:11or whatever it was that I set and you get the idea.
-
11:11 - 11:15This is really great for working on your scales or arpeggios or anything really
-
11:15 - 11:17that you've gotta try and get faster and faster.
-
11:17 - 11:20I wouldn't recommend doing it this extreme.
-
11:20 - 11:22That's kinda bad really to be honest.
-
11:22 - 11:24You're much more likely to be going from, you know,
-
11:24 - 11:27100 to 110 or something along those kinda lines
-
11:27 - 11:29but you get the idea anyway.
-
11:29 - 11:33It's a very, very useful little training tool.
-
11:33 - 11:37And of course, if you hit the iButton down in the bottom corner there
-
11:37 - 11:39you have the full instructions.
-
11:39 - 11:41All of the stuff that I'm just have been going through with you there.
-
11:41 - 11:46Now, how to make the most of each one of those different training tools
-
11:46 - 11:48and a bit about playing with the metronome.
-
11:48 - 11:54How it's best to do that and some links to the forum and other kinda useful things like that.
-
11:54 - 11:58So, all of the info is built into the app.
-
11:58 - 11:59Well, I hope you enjoyed having a look at that.
-
11:59 - 12:04Remember there's plenty much more information and support at justinguitar.com.
-
12:04 - 12:09You'll find the applications in the products area - the online store.
-
12:09 - 12:13So, I'll see you for a lesson or something like that very soon.
-
12:13 - 12:14Take care of yourselves, bye-bye.

- The Time Trainer Metronome App by JustinGuitar - Promo Video
- Description:
-
In this video I introduce my new iOS app The Time Trainer Metronome - available now at the App Store, coming soon for Android!
US: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/time-trainer-metronome/id502491350?mt=8
UK: http://itunes.apple.com/uk/app/time-trainer-metronome/id502491350?mt=8
Way more than a metronome, the Time Trainer Metronome App adds three training tools to help you develop your own internal sense of time!
This is an accurate and stable metronome - you will find nearly all the metronome apps are not even close to accurate!! It has tap tempo, a few different sounds, accent control for odd time playing, visual metronome movement with a flash on the beat - but then we add to that with three training tools: Bar Breaks, Random Beat Drop and Speed Up.
• Bar Breaks • will mute the metronome for a bar or more forcing you to keep your time solid and be perfectly syncronised when the clicks return! This is a superb exercise and will really help develop confidence in holding your tempo. You can adjust how many bars are solid at the start then how many bars are solid and how many bars are muted which will cycle for the duration of the session. You can also select "random" mode and a % of bars (that you set) that will be dropped for an even more challenging practice session!
• Random Beat Drop • does exactly what it says on the tin... some of the beats (clicks) will be muted at random, forcing you to be confident with your time and not rely on the click too much. Many people chase the beat or try and anticpate it, and this exercise will help you stop those bad habbits! I've personally found that the "gradual" setting is most useful, a five minute session starting at 100% with more and more beats muted up to the % that you set.
• Speed Up • is a tool I have wanted for years for my own practice so now I made one. Often when working on scales, arpeggios or licks you want to start at an easy speed where you are playing it 100% correctly and gradually push your technique by playing it faster and faster. With this tool you set a start tempo, end tempo and duration fo you practice session and off you go, no more stopping to bump the bpm up a few notches every minute!
I'm sure you will find all of the tools very useful, and of course you will find full support on the justinguitar community forum - please take the time to rate and review it, good things will help promote it and anything negative will help me improve it!
Wishing you many happy hours of practice :) Justin
