Hidden music rituals around the world

  • Not Synced
Vincent Moon: How can we use computers,
  • Not Synced
cameras, microphones to represent the world
  • Not Synced
in an alternative way, as much as possible?
  • Not Synced
How, maybe, is it possible to use the Internet
  • Not Synced
to create a new form of cinema?
  • Not Synced
And actually, why do we record?
  • Not Synced
Well, I research these simple questions in mind,
  • Not Synced
then I started to make films 10 years ago,
  • Not Synced
first with a friend, Christophe Abric.
  • Not Synced
He had a website, La Blogotheque,
  • Not Synced
    dedicated to independent music.
  • Not Synced
    We were crazy about music.
  • Not Synced
We wanted to represent music in a different way,
  • Not Synced
to film the music we love, the musicians we admired
  • Not Synced
    as much as possible
  • Not Synced
    far from the music industry
  • Not Synced
and far from the cliches attached to it.
  • Not Synced
We started to publish every week
  • Not Synced
    sessions on the Internet.
  • Not Synced
We are going to see a few extracts now.
  • Not Synced
From Grizzly Bear in the shower
  • Not Synced
to Sigur Ros in a Parisian cafe,
  • Not Synced
from [???] playing by the Eiffel Tower
  • Not Synced
to Tom Jones in his hotel room in New York,
  • Not Synced
from the Arcade Fire in an elevator
  • Not Synced
    in the Olympiades
  • Not Synced
to Beirut going down stairs in Brooklyn,
  • Not Synced
    from [??] in a car
  • Not Synced
to the National around a table at night
  • Not Synced
    in the south of France,
  • Not Synced
from Bon Iver playing with some friends
  • Not Synced
    in an apartment in Montmarte
  • Not Synced
to Yeasayer having a long night,
  • Not Synced
    and many, many, many more
  • Not Synced
    unknown or very famous bands.
  • Not Synced
We published all those things for free on the Internet,
  • Not Synced
    and we wanted to share
  • Not Synced
all those films and represent music in a different way.
  • Not Synced
We wanted to create another type of intimacy
  • Not Synced
    using all those new technologies.
  • Not Synced
At the time, 10 years ago actually,
  • Not Synced
there was no such project on the Internet,
  • Not Synced
and I guess that's why the project
  • Not Synced
we were making, the Take Away Shows,
  • Not Synced
    got quite successful,
  • Not Synced
    reaching millions of viewers.
  • Not Synced
After a while, I got a bit "Mmmm,"
  • Not Synced
I wanted to do something else.
  • Not Synced
I felt the need to travel and
    to discover some other music,
  • Not Synced
    to explore the world,
  • Not Synced
    going to other corners
  • Not Synced
and actually it was also this idea of nomadic cinema,
  • Not Synced
sort of, that I had in mind.
  • Not Synced
How could the use of new technologies
  • Not Synced
and the world could fit together?
  • Not Synced
How could I have my films in a bus
  • Not Synced
    crossing the Andes?
  • Not Synced
So I went on a five-year travels around the globe.
  • Not Synced
I started at the time in the [???] filming
  • Not Synced
my music le bon Collection Petites Planètes,
  • Not Synced
which was also an homage to
    French filmmaker Chris Marker.
  • Not Synced
We're going to see now a few more extracts
  • Not Synced
    of those new films.
  • Not Synced
    From the Tecnobrega diva of
    northern Brazil, Gaby Amarantos
  • Not Synced
to a female ensemble in Chechnya,
  • Not Synced
from experimental electronic music in Singapore
  • Not Synced
    with One Man Nation
  • Not Synced
to Brazilian [???] Tom Zé singing
on his rooftop in Sao Paolo,
  • Not Synced
from the Bambir, the great rock band from Armenia
  • Not Synced
    to some traditional songs
  • Not Synced
in the restaurant in Tbilisi, Georgia,
  • Not Synced
    from the White Shoes,
  • Not Synced
a great [??] band from Jakarta, Indonesia
  • Not Synced
to Dakha Brakha, the revolutionary band
  • Not Synced
    from Kiev, Ukraine,
  • Not Synced
    from Tomi Lebrero
  • Not Synced
and his band and his friends
    in Buenos Aires, Argentina,
  • Not Synced
    to many other places
  • Not Synced
    and musicians around the world.
  • Not Synced
My desire was to make it as a truck.
  • Not Synced
    To do all those things,
  • Not Synced
    it would have been impossible
  • Not Synced
with a big company behind me,
  • Not Synced
    with a structure or anything.
  • Not Synced
I was traveling alone with a backpack:
  • Not Synced
    computer camera, microphones in it.
  • Not Synced
Alone, I shoot with just local people,
  • Not Synced
meeting my team, which was absolutely not
  • Not Synced
professional people, on the spot there,
  • Not Synced
going from one place to another
  • Not Synced
and to make cinema as a truck.
  • Not Synced
I really believed that cinema could be
  • Not Synced
    this very simple thing.
  • Not Synced
I want to make a film and you're going to give me
  • Not Synced
a place to stay for the night.
  • Not Synced
I give you a moment of cinema
  • Not Synced
    and you will [???].
  • Not Synced
Well, or other drinks, depending on where you are.
  • Not Synced
In Peru, the drink pisco sour.
  • Not Synced
Oh, well, when I arrived in Peru, actually,
  • Not Synced
    I had no idea
  • Not Synced
about what I would do there,
  • Not Synced
and I just had one phone number, actually,
  • Not Synced
    of one person.
  • Not Synced
    Three months later,
  • Not Synced
after traveling all around the country, I hard recorded
  • Not Synced
33 films, only with the help of local people,
  • Not Synced
only with the help of people
  • Not Synced
that I was asking all the time the same question:
  • Not Synced
    what is important to record
  • Not Synced
    here today?
  • Not Synced
By living in such a way,
  • Not Synced
    by working without any structure,
  • Not Synced
I was able to react to the moment
  • Not Synced
and to decide, oh, this is important to make now.
  • Not Synced
This is important to record that whole person.
  • Not Synced
This is important to create this exchange.
  • Not Synced
    When I went to Chechnya,
  • Not Synced
the first person I met looked at me and was like,
  • Not Synced
    "What are you doing here?
  • Not Synced
Are you a journalist? NGO? Politics?
  • Not Synced
What kind of problems are you going to study?"
  • Not Synced
Well, I was there to research
  • Not Synced
on Sufi rituals in Chechnya, actually,
  • Not Synced
incredible culture of Sufism in Chechnya,
  • Not Synced
which is absolutely unknown outside of the region.
  • Not Synced
    As soon as people understood
  • Not Synced
that I would give them those films,
  • Not Synced
I would publish them online for free
    under a creative commons license,
  • Not Synced
but I would also really give them to the people
  • Not Synced
and I would let them do what they want with it.
  • Not Synced
I just want to represent them under a beautiful light.
  • Not Synced
I just want to portray them in a way that
  • Not Synced
    their grandchildren are going
    to look at their grandfather,
  • Not Synced
and they're going to be like,
  • Not Synced
"Whoa, my grandfather is as cool as Beyoncé."
  • Not Synced
    It's a really important thing.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    It's really important,
  • Not Synced
    because that's the way
  • Not Synced
people are going to look at their own culture,
  • Not Synced
    at their own land.
  • Not Synced
They're going to think about it differently.
  • Not Synced
It may be a way to maintain a certain diversity.
  • Not Synced
    Why you will record?
  • Not Synced
    Hmm. There's really good quotes
  • Not Synced
    by American thinker Hakim Bey
  • Not Synced
    which says, "Every recording
  • Not Synced
is a tombstone of a live performance."
  • Not Synced
It's a really good sentence to keep in mind
  • Not Synced
nowadays in an era saturated by images.
  • Not Synced
What's the point of that? Where do we go with it?
  • Not Synced
I was researching. I was still keeping this idea
  • Not Synced
    in mind: what's the point?
  • Not Synced
I was researching on music, trying to pull,
  • Not Synced
trying to get closer to a certain origin of it.
  • Not Synced
Where is this all coming from?
  • Not Synced
I am French. I had no idea about
  • Not Synced
what I would discover, which is a very simple thing:
  • Not Synced
    everything was sacred, at first,
  • Not Synced
    and music was spiritual healing.
  • Not Synced
How could I use my camera,
  • Not Synced
my little tool, to get closer
  • Not Synced
and maybe not only capture the trends
  • Not Synced
but find an equivalent, the [???], maybe,
  • Not Synced
    something in complete harmony
  • Not Synced
    with the people?
  • Not Synced
    That was, that is now,
  • Not Synced
    my new researches I'm making
  • Not Synced
on spirituality, on new spirits around the world.
  • Not Synced
Maybe a few more extracts now,
  • Not Synced
from the Aluk To Raja funeral ritual in Indonesia
  • Not Synced
    to an Easter ceremony in the north of Ethiopia;
  • Not Synced
from jathilan, a popular trance ritual from Java
  • Not Synced
    to an Umbanda in north of Brazil;
  • Not Synced
    the Sufi rituals of Chechnya
  • Not Synced
to a mass in the holiest church of Armenia,
  • Not Synced
    some Sufi songs in Harar,
  • Not Synced
    the holy city of Ethiopia
  • Not Synced
    to an Ayahuasca ceremony
  • Not Synced
    deep in the Amazon of Peru with the [??] people;
  • Not Synced
then to my new project, the one I'm doing now,
  • Not Synced
    here in Brazil name "Híbridos."
  • Not Synced
I'm doing it with Priscilla Telmon of [East Reach?]
  • Not Synced
on the new spiritualities all around the country.
  • Not Synced
This is my quest, my own little quest of what I call
  • Not Synced
    experimental [????],
  • Not Synced
    trying to
  • Not Synced
    hybrid all those different genres,
  • Not Synced
trying to regain itself in complexity.
  • Not Synced
    Why do we record?
  • Not Synced
    I was still there.
  • Not Synced
I really believe cinema teaches us to see.
  • Not Synced
The way we show the world
  • Not Synced
is going to change the way we see this world,
  • Not Synced
and we live in a moment where the mass media
  • Not Synced
are doing a terrible, terrible job
  • Not Synced
    at representing the world:
  • Not Synced
    violence, extremists,
  • Not Synced
    only spectacular events,
  • Not Synced
    only simplifications of everyday life.
  • Not Synced
    I think we are recording
  • Not Synced
    to regain ourself in complexity.
  • Not Synced
    To reinvent life today,
  • Not Synced
we have to make new forms of images.
  • Not Synced
    And it's very simple.
  • Not Synced
    Muito obrigado.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    Moderator: Vincent, Vincent, Vincent.
  • Not Synced
Merci. We have to prepare for
    the following performance,
  • Not Synced
and I have a question for you,
    and the question is this:
  • Not Synced
you show up in places like the ones you just
  • Not Synced
have shown us, and you are carrying a camera
  • Not Synced
and I assume that you are welcome
  • Not Synced
but you are not always absolutely welcome.
  • Not Synced
    You walk into sacred rituals,
  • Not Synced
private moments in a village, a town,
  • Not Synced
    a group of people.
  • Not Synced
How do you break the barrier
  • Not Synced
when you show up with a lens?
  • Not Synced
VM: I think you break it with your body,
  • Not Synced
    more than with your knowledge.
  • Not Synced
That's what it teaches me to travel,
  • Not Synced
to trust the memory of the body
  • Not Synced
more than the memory of the brain.
  • Not Synced
    The respect is stepping forward,
  • Not Synced
not stepping backward, and I really think that
  • Not Synced
by engaging your body in the
    moment, in the ceremony,
  • Not Synced
in the places, people welcome you
  • Not Synced
    and understand your energy.
  • Not Synced
Moderator: You told me that most of the videos
  • Not Synced
you have made are actually one single shot.
  • Not Synced
    You don't do much editing.
  • Not Synced
I mean, you edited the ones for us
  • Not Synced
at the beginning of the sessions
because of the length and etc.
  • Not Synced
Otherwise, you just go in and
  • Not Synced
capture whatever happens in front of your eyes
  • Not Synced
without much planning, and so is that the case?
  • Not Synced
    It's correct?
  • Not Synced
VM: My idea is that I think that
  • Not Synced
as long as we don't cut,
  • Not Synced
as long as we let the viewer watch,
  • Not Synced
more and more viewers are going to feel closer,
  • Not Synced
is going to get closer to the moment,
  • Not Synced
to that moment and to that place.
  • Not Synced
I really think that's a matter of respecting the viewer,
  • Not Synced
to not cut all the time from one place to another,
  • Not Synced
to just let the time go.
  • Not Synced
Moderator: Tell me in a few words
  • Not Synced
your new project, "Híbridos," here in Brazil.
  • Not Synced
Just before coming to TEDGlobal, you have actually
  • Not Synced
been traveling around the country for that.
  • Not Synced
Tell us a couple of things.
  • Not Synced
VM: "Híbridos" is, I really believe Brazil,
  • Not Synced
far from the cliches, is the greatest
    religious country in the world,
  • Not Synced
the greatest country in terms of spirituality
  • Not Synced
    and experimentations and spiritualities,
  • Not Synced
and it's a big project I'm doing over this year,
  • Not Synced
researching in very different regions of Brazil,
  • Not Synced
in very different forms of [???]
  • Not Synced
and trying to understand how people live together
  • Not Synced
    with spirituality nowadays.
  • Not Synced
Moderator: The man who is going
  • Not Synced
    to appear onstage momentarily,
  • Not Synced
and Vincent's going to introduce him,
  • Not Synced
is one of the subjects of one of his past videos.
  • Not Synced
When did you do a video with him?
  • Not Synced
VM: I guess four years ago,
  • Not Synced
four years in my first travel.
  • Not Synced
Moderator: So it was one of your first
  • Not Synced
    ones in Brazil.
  • Not Synced
VM: It was amongst the first ones in Brazil, yeah.
  • Not Synced
I shot the film and the rest of it
  • Not Synced
in the place where he is fun.
  • Not Synced
    Moderator: So let's introduce him.
  • Not Synced
    Who are we waiting for?
  • Not Synced
VM: I'll just make it very short. It's a very great honor
  • Not Synced
for me to welcome onstage one of the greatest
  • Not Synced
    Brazilian musicians of all time.
  • Not Synced
    Please welcome Nana Vasconcelos.
  • Not Synced
    Moderator: Nana Vasconcelos!
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
Nana Vasconcelos: Let's go to the jungle.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
