10 things you didn't know about orgasm
-
0:04 - 0:08Alright. I'm going to show you a couple of images
-
0:08 - 0:11from a very diverting paper
-
0:11 - 0:15in The Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine.
-
0:15 - 0:18I'm going to go way out on a limb and say that it is the most diverting paper
-
0:18 - 0:21ever published in The Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine.
-
0:21 - 0:26The title is "Observations of In-Utero Masturbation."
-
0:26 - 0:29(Laughter)
-
0:29 - 0:33Okay. Now on the left you can see the hand -- that's the big arrow --
-
0:33 - 0:36and the penis on the right. The hand hovering.
-
0:36 - 0:38And over here we have,
-
0:38 - 0:41in the words of radiologist Israel Meisner,
-
0:41 - 0:46"The hand grasping the penis in a fashion resembling masturbation movements."
-
0:46 - 0:48Bear in mind this was an ultrasound,
-
0:48 - 0:50so it would have been moving images.
-
0:50 - 0:53Orgasm is a reflex of the autonomic nervous system.
-
0:53 - 0:55Now this is the part of the nervous system
-
0:55 - 0:58that deals with the things that we don't consciously control,
-
0:58 - 1:02like digestion, heart rate and sexual arousal.
-
1:02 - 1:04And the orgasm reflex can be triggered
-
1:04 - 1:08by a surprisingly broad range of input.
-
1:08 - 1:11Genital stimulation. Duh.
-
1:11 - 1:13But also Kinsey interviewed a woman
-
1:13 - 1:16who could be brought to orgasm
-
1:16 - 1:19by having someone stroke her eyebrow.
-
1:19 - 1:21People with spinal cord injuries,
-
1:21 - 1:23like paraplegias, quadriplegias,
-
1:23 - 1:26will often develop a very, very sensitive area
-
1:26 - 1:28right above the level of their injury,
-
1:28 - 1:30wherever that is.
-
1:30 - 1:33There is such a thing as a knee orgasm in the literature.
-
1:33 - 1:37I think the most curious one that I came across
-
1:37 - 1:39was a case report of a woman
-
1:39 - 1:43who had an orgasm every time she brushed her teeth.
-
1:43 - 1:46(Laughter)
-
1:46 - 1:49This was something in the complex
-
1:49 - 1:53sensory-motor action of brushing her teeth
-
1:53 - 1:55was triggering orgasm.
-
1:55 - 1:58And she went to a neurologist who was fascinated.
-
1:58 - 2:01He checked to see if it was something in the toothpaste,
-
2:01 - 2:04but no -- it happened with any brand.
-
2:04 - 2:06They stimulated her gums
-
2:06 - 2:08with a toothpick, to see if that was doing it.
-
2:08 - 2:12No. It was the whole, you know, motion.
-
2:12 - 2:15And the amazing thing to me is that
-
2:15 - 2:17now you would think this woman would like have
-
2:17 - 2:19excellent oral hygiene.
-
2:19 - 2:23(Laughter)
-
2:23 - 2:25Sadly she -- this is what it said in the journal paper --
-
2:25 - 2:28"She believed that she was possessed by demons
-
2:28 - 2:31and switched to mouthwash for her oral care."
-
2:31 - 2:33It's so sad.
-
2:33 - 2:34(Laughter)
-
2:34 - 2:37I interviewed, when I was working on the book,
-
2:37 - 2:41I interviewed a woman who can think herself to orgasm.
-
2:41 - 2:44She was part of a study at Rutgers University.
-
2:44 - 2:46You gotta love that. Rutgers.
-
2:46 - 2:49So I interviewed her in Oakland,
-
2:49 - 2:51in a sushi restaurant.
-
2:51 - 2:54And I said, "So, could you do it right here?"
-
2:54 - 2:57And she said, "Yeah, but you know I'd rather finish my meal if you don't mind."
-
2:57 - 2:59(Laughter)
-
2:59 - 3:01But afterwards she was kind enough to demonstrate
-
3:01 - 3:03on a bench outside.
-
3:03 - 3:05It was remarkable. It took about one minute.
-
3:05 - 3:08And I said to her,
-
3:08 - 3:11"Are you just doing this all the time?"
-
3:11 - 3:12(Laughter)
-
3:12 - 3:17She said, "No. Honestly when I get home I'm usually too tired."
-
3:17 - 3:20(Laughter)
-
3:20 - 3:23She said that the last time she had done it
-
3:23 - 3:25was on the Disneyland tram.
-
3:25 - 3:27(Laughter)
-
3:27 - 3:30The headquarters for orgasm, along the spinal nerve,
-
3:30 - 3:36is something called the sacral nerve root, which is back here.
-
3:36 - 3:39And if you trigger, if you stimulate with an electrode,
-
3:39 - 3:43the precise spot, you will trigger an orgasm.
-
3:43 - 3:47And it is a fact that you can trigger spinal reflexes
-
3:47 - 3:49in dead people --
-
3:49 - 3:52a certain kind of dead person, a beating-heart cadaver.
-
3:52 - 3:54Now this is somebody who is brain-dead,
-
3:54 - 3:56legally dead, definitely checked out,
-
3:56 - 3:58but is being kept alive on a respirator,
-
3:58 - 4:00so that their organs will be oxygenated
-
4:00 - 4:02for transplantation.
-
4:02 - 4:05Now in one of these brain-dead people,
-
4:05 - 4:07if you trigger the right spot,
-
4:07 - 4:10you will see something every now and then.
-
4:10 - 4:12There is a reflex called the Lazarus reflex.
-
4:12 - 4:18And this is -- I'll demonstrate as best I can, not being dead.
-
4:18 - 4:20It's like this. You trigger the spot.
-
4:20 - 4:25The dead guy, or gal, goes ... like that.
-
4:25 - 4:28Very unsettling for people working in pathology labs.
-
4:28 - 4:29(Laughter)
-
4:29 - 4:34Now if you can trigger the Lazarus reflex in a dead person,
-
4:34 - 4:37why not the orgasm reflex?
-
4:37 - 4:41I asked this question to a brain death expert,
-
4:41 - 4:44Stephanie Mann, who was foolish enough to return my emails.
-
4:44 - 4:45(Laughter)
-
4:45 - 4:48I said, "So, could you conceivably
-
4:48 - 4:50trigger an orgasm in a dead person?"
-
4:50 - 4:52She said, "Yes, if the sacral nerve is being oxygenated,
-
4:52 - 4:56you conceivably could."
-
4:56 - 5:00Obviously it wouldn't be as much fun for the person.
-
5:00 - 5:02But it would be an orgasm --
-
5:02 - 5:03(Laughter)
-
5:03 - 5:05nonetheless.
-
5:05 - 5:08I actually suggested to -- there is a researcher at the University of Alabama
-
5:08 - 5:10who does orgasm research.
-
5:10 - 5:12I said to her, "You should do an experiment.
-
5:12 - 5:15You know? You can get cadavers if you work at a university."
-
5:15 - 5:17I said, "You should actually do this."
-
5:17 - 5:20She said, "You get the human subjects review board approval for this one."
-
5:20 - 5:22(Laughter)
-
5:22 - 5:25According to 1930s marriage manual author,
-
5:25 - 5:27Theodoor van de Velde,
-
5:27 - 5:31a slight seminal odor can be detected on the breath of a woman
-
5:31 - 5:35within about an hour after sexual intercourse.
-
5:35 - 5:39Theodoor van de Velde was something of a semen connoisseur.
-
5:39 - 5:41(Laughter)
-
5:41 - 5:43This is a guy writing a book, "Ideal Marriage," you know.
-
5:43 - 5:46Very heavy hetero guy.
-
5:46 - 5:48But he wrote in this book, "Ideal Marriage" --
-
5:48 - 5:52he said that he could differentiate between the semen of a young man,
-
5:52 - 5:56which he said had a fresh, exhilarating smell,
-
5:56 - 5:58and the semen of mature men,
-
5:58 - 6:00whose semen smelled quote,
-
6:00 - 6:03"Remarkably like that of the flowers of the Spanish chestnut.
-
6:03 - 6:05Sometimes quite freshly floral,
-
6:05 - 6:07and then again sometimes extremely pungent."
-
6:07 - 6:12(Laughter)
-
6:12 - 6:15Okay. In 1999, in the state of Israel,
-
6:15 - 6:17a man began hiccupping.
-
6:17 - 6:20And this was one of those cases that went on and on.
-
6:20 - 6:22He tried everything his friends suggested.
-
6:22 - 6:24Nothing seemed to help.
-
6:24 - 6:27Days went by. At a certain point, the man,
-
6:27 - 6:30still hiccupping, had sex with his wife.
-
6:30 - 6:32And lo and behold, the hiccups went away.
-
6:32 - 6:36He told his doctor, who published a case report
-
6:36 - 6:39in a Canadian medical journal under the title,
-
6:39 - 6:41"Sexual Intercourse as a Potential Treatment
-
6:41 - 6:44for Intractable Hiccups."
-
6:44 - 6:47I love this article because at a certain point they suggested
-
6:47 - 6:51that unattached hiccuppers could try masturbation.
-
6:51 - 6:52(Laughter)
-
6:52 - 6:56I love that because there is like a whole demographic: unattached hiccuppers.
-
6:56 - 6:58(Laughter)
-
6:58 - 7:04Married, single, unattached hiccupper.
-
7:04 - 7:07In the 1900s, early 1900s
-
7:07 - 7:09gynecologists, a lot of gynecologists believed
-
7:09 - 7:12that when a woman has an orgasm
-
7:12 - 7:17the contractions serve to suck the semen up through the cervix
-
7:17 - 7:19and sort of deliver it really quickly to the egg,
-
7:19 - 7:22thereby upping the odds of conception.
-
7:22 - 7:24It was called the "upsuck" theory.
-
7:24 - 7:26(Laughter)
-
7:26 - 7:31If you go all the way back to Hippocrates,
-
7:31 - 7:34physicians believed that orgasm in women was not just
-
7:34 - 7:37helpful for conception, but necessary.
-
7:37 - 7:41Doctors back then were routinely telling men
-
7:41 - 7:45the importance of pleasuring their wives.
-
7:45 - 7:47Marriage-manual author and semen-sniffer
-
7:47 - 7:49Theodoor van de Velde --
-
7:49 - 7:50(Laughter)
-
7:50 - 7:53has a line in his book.
-
7:53 - 7:57I loved this guy. I got a lot of mileage out of Theodoor van de Velde.
-
7:57 - 7:59He had this line in his book
-
7:59 - 8:02that supposedly comes from the Habsburg Monarchy,
-
8:02 - 8:05where there was an empress Maria Theresa,
-
8:05 - 8:07who was having trouble conceiving.
-
8:07 - 8:10And apparently the royal court physician said to her,
-
8:10 - 8:12"I am of the opinion
-
8:12 - 8:14that the vulva of your most sacred majesty
-
8:14 - 8:17be titillated for some time prior to intercourse."
-
8:17 - 8:18(Laughter)
-
8:18 - 8:22It's apparently, I don't know, on the record somewhere.
-
8:22 - 8:26Masters and Johnson: now we're moving forward to the 1950s.
-
8:26 - 8:29Masters and Johnson were upsuck skeptics,
-
8:29 - 8:32which is also really fun to say.
-
8:32 - 8:34They didn't buy it.
-
8:34 - 8:36And they decided, being Masters and Johnson,
-
8:36 - 8:38that they would get to the bottom of it.
-
8:38 - 8:41They brought women into the lab -- I think it was five women --
-
8:41 - 8:44and outfitted them with cervical caps
-
8:44 - 8:47containing artificial semen.
-
8:47 - 8:49And in the artificial semen
-
8:49 - 8:51was a radio-opaque substance,
-
8:51 - 8:54such that it would show up on an X-ray.
-
8:54 - 8:56This is the 1950s.
-
8:56 - 9:00Anyway these women sat in front of an X-ray device.
-
9:00 - 9:02And they masturbated.
-
9:02 - 9:06And Masters and Johnson looked to see if the semen was being sucked up.
-
9:06 - 9:08Did not find any evidence of upsuck.
-
9:08 - 9:12You may be wondering, "How do you make artificial semen?"
-
9:12 - 9:17(Laughter)
-
9:17 - 9:19I have an answer for you. I have two answers.
-
9:19 - 9:22You can use flour and water, or cornstarch and water.
-
9:22 - 9:26I actually found three separate recipes in the literature.
-
9:26 - 9:27(Laughter)
-
9:27 - 9:29My favorite being the one that says --
-
9:29 - 9:31you know, they have the ingredients listed,
-
9:31 - 9:33and then in a recipe it will say, for example,
-
9:33 - 9:35"Yield: two dozen cupcakes."
-
9:35 - 9:38This one said, "Yield: one ejaculate."
-
9:38 - 9:41(Laughter)
-
9:41 - 9:43There's another way that orgasm might boost fertility.
-
9:43 - 9:45This one involves men.
-
9:45 - 9:47Sperm that sit around in the body for a week or more
-
9:47 - 9:50start to develop abnormalities
-
9:50 - 9:52that make them less effective at head-banging their way
-
9:52 - 9:54into the egg.
-
9:54 - 9:56British sexologist Roy Levin
-
9:56 - 9:58has speculated that this is perhaps why men
-
9:58 - 10:02evolved to be such enthusiastic and frequent masturbators.
-
10:02 - 10:04He said, "If I keep tossing myself off
-
10:04 - 10:06I get fresh sperm being made."
-
10:06 - 10:10Which I thought was an interesting idea, theory.
-
10:10 - 10:12So now you have an evolutionary excuse.
-
10:12 - 10:16(Laughter)
-
10:16 - 10:19Okay.
-
10:19 - 10:21(Laughter)
-
10:21 - 10:26Alrighty. There is considerable evidence for upsuck in the animal kingdom --
-
10:26 - 10:28pigs, for instance.
-
10:28 - 10:32In Denmark, the Danish National Committee for Pig Production
-
10:32 - 10:34found out that if you
-
10:34 - 10:38sexually stimulate a sow while you artificially inseminate her,
-
10:38 - 10:41you will see a six-percent increase in the farrowing rate,
-
10:41 - 10:44which is the number of piglets produced.
-
10:44 - 10:47So they came up with this plan, this five-point stimulation plan
-
10:47 - 10:49for the sows.
-
10:49 - 10:52And they had the farmers -- there is posters they put in the barn,
-
10:52 - 10:54and they have a DVD.
-
10:54 - 10:56And I got a copy of this DVD.
-
10:56 - 10:57(Laughter)
-
10:57 - 11:01This is my unveiling, because I am going to show you a clip.
-
11:01 - 11:03(Laughter)
-
11:03 - 11:05So uh, okay.
-
11:05 - 11:08Now here we go in to the -- la la la, off to work.
-
11:08 - 11:11It all looks very innocent.
-
11:11 - 11:13He's going to be doing things with his hands
-
11:13 - 11:17that the boar would use his snout, lacking hands. Okay.
-
11:17 - 11:20(Laughter)
-
11:20 - 11:25This is it. The boar has a very odd courtship repertoire.
-
11:25 - 11:29(Laughter)
-
11:29 - 11:31This is to mimic the weight of the boar.
-
11:31 - 11:34(Laughter)
-
11:34 - 11:37You should know, the clitoris of the pig, inside the vagina.
-
11:37 - 11:40So this may be sort of titillating for her. Here we go.
-
11:40 - 12:02(Laughter)
-
12:02 - 12:04And the happy result.
-
12:04 - 12:06(Applause)
-
12:06 - 12:08I love this video.
-
12:08 - 12:10There is a point in this video, towards the beginning
-
12:10 - 12:12where they zoom in for a close up of his hand with his wedding ring,
-
12:12 - 12:17as if to say, "It's okay, it's just his job. He really does like women."
-
12:17 - 12:21(Laughter)
-
12:21 - 12:24Okay. Now I said -- when I was in Denmark, my host was named Anne Marie.
-
12:24 - 12:30And I said, "So why don't you just stimulate the clitoris of the pig?
-
12:30 - 12:32Why don't you have the farmers do that?
-
12:32 - 12:34That's not one of your five steps."
-
12:34 - 12:36She said -- I have to read you what she said, because I love it.
-
12:36 - 12:38She said, "It was a big hurdle
-
12:38 - 12:41just to get farmers to touch underneath the vulva.
-
12:41 - 12:44So we thought, let's not mention the clitoris right now."
-
12:44 - 12:49(Laughter)
-
12:49 - 12:52Shy but ambitious pig farmers, however, can purchase a -- this is true --
-
12:52 - 12:54a sow vibrator,
-
12:54 - 12:56that hangs on the sperm feeder tube to vibrate.
-
12:56 - 12:59Because, as I mentioned,
-
12:59 - 13:01the clitoris is inside the vagina.
-
13:01 - 13:04So possibly, you know, a little more arousing than it looks.
-
13:04 - 13:06And I also said to her,
-
13:06 - 13:08"Now these sows. I mean, you may have noticed there,
-
13:08 - 13:11The sow doesn't look to be in the throes of ecstasy."
-
13:11 - 13:13And she said, you can't make that conclusion,
-
13:13 - 13:16because animals don't register
-
13:16 - 13:18pain or pleasure on their faces in the same way that we do.
-
13:18 - 13:22They tend to -- pigs, for example, are more like dogs.
-
13:22 - 13:25They use the upper half of the face; the ears are very expressive.
-
13:25 - 13:28So you're not really sure what's going on with the pig.
-
13:28 - 13:32Primates, on the other hand, we use our mouths more.
-
13:32 - 13:36This is the ejaculation face of the stump-tailed macaque.
-
13:36 - 13:38(Laughter)
-
13:38 - 13:42And, interestingly, this has been observed in female macaques,
-
13:42 - 13:46but only when mounting another female.
-
13:46 - 13:49(Laughter)
-
13:49 - 13:51Masters and Johnson, in the 1950s, they decided,
-
13:51 - 13:56okay, we're going to figure out the entire human sexual response cycle,
-
13:56 - 13:59from arousal, all the way through orgasm, in men and women --
-
13:59 - 14:01everything that happens in the human body.
-
14:01 - 14:04Okay, with women, a lot of this is happening inside.
-
14:04 - 14:06This did not stop Masters and Johnson.
-
14:06 - 14:11They developed an artificial coition machine.
-
14:11 - 14:14This is basically a penis camera on a motor.
-
14:14 - 14:16There is a phallus,
-
14:16 - 14:19clear acrylic phallus, with a camera and a light source,
-
14:19 - 14:22attached to a motor that is kind of going like this.
-
14:22 - 14:25And the woman would have sex with it.
-
14:25 - 14:27That is what they would do. Pretty amazing.
-
14:27 - 14:29Sadly, this device has been dismantled.
-
14:29 - 14:31This just kills me, not because I wanted to use it --
-
14:31 - 14:34I wanted to see it.
-
14:34 - 14:37(Laughter)
-
14:37 - 14:40One fine day
-
14:40 - 14:43Alfred Kinsey decided
-
14:43 - 14:48to calculate the average distance traveled by ejaculated semen.
-
14:48 - 14:50This was not idle curiosity.
-
14:50 - 14:54Doctor Kinsey had heard --
-
14:54 - 14:57and there was a theory kind of going around at the time, this being the 1940s --
-
14:57 - 14:59that the force with which
-
14:59 - 15:01semen is thrown against the cervix
-
15:01 - 15:04was a factor in fertility.
-
15:04 - 15:07Kinsey thought it was bunk, so he got to work.
-
15:07 - 15:10He got together in his lab
-
15:10 - 15:15300 men, a measuring tape, and a movie camera.
-
