How CDC is Making COVID-19 Vaccine Recommendations

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    Hi, I'm doctor Amanda Cohn.
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    I'm a physician and a medical officer
  • 0:06 - 0:10
    in CDC's National Center for
    Immunization and Respiratory Diseases
  • 0:10 - 0:13
    and currently serve
    as the executive secretary
  • 0:13 - 0:18
    for the Advisory Committee
on Immunization Practices – or ACIP.
  • 0:19 - 0:20
I'd like to share with you
  • 0:20 - 0:24
how this devoted group of experts
    develops recommendations
  • 0:24 - 0:28
and advises CDC on the use
    of vaccines in our country.
  • 0:29 - 0:34
ACIP is dedicated to making evidence
    and science based recommendations
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    to prevent and control
    vaccine preventable diseases,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    like COVID-19.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    They are motivated
by their intention to save lives,
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    are free from political influence,
    and ensure transparency
  • 0:46 - 0:49
by holding all of their meetings
    open to the public
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    and making them available online.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    The committee is made up
    of fifteen voting members,
  • 0:55 - 0:59
who are medical and public health experts
    from across the United States,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    including one person
    who represents the general public.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    They review information about
    the safety and effectiveness
  • 1:07 - 1:11
of vaccines and clinical trial results,
    and then vote to recommend
  • 1:11 - 1:14
    whether those vaccines
should be used in the United States
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    The committee also has
    non-voting members,
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    such as representatives from
    the American Nurses Association,
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    American Medical Association,
    American Academy of Pediatrics,
  • 1:25 - 1:28
and the American College of Physicians.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    It's important to have these
    individuals on the committee,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    because they offer
    the perspective of doctors, nurses,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    and other healthcare providers,
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    who follow CDC's vaccine recommendations
    and put them into practice.
  • 1:41 - 1:45
A lot of effort has gone into
    developing, studying, and authorizing
  • 1:45 - 1:47

    COVID-19 vaccines quickly,
  • 1:48 - 1:50
to respond to the pandemic we are facing.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    It is understandable that
    you may be concerned
  • 1:53 - 1:56
about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    given how quickly they
    have been developed.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    Despite this rapid pace,
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    COVID-19 vaccines go through
    the same rigorous review process,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    as all other vaccines,
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    before this committee votes
    on whether to recommend them.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
Vaccine safety is always the top priority,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    and it is no different
    for COVID-19 vaccines.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
Since the beginning of the pandemic,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    ACIP has met often,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
to stay informed about COVID-19 vaccines.
  • 2:25 - 2:29
After each COVID-19 vaccine is authorized
  • 2:29 - 2:31
or approved for use in the United States,
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    ACIP will quickly meet
    to review available data
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    from the rigorous studies
    that vaccine manufacturers conducted,
  • 2:39 - 2:43
to show that each vaccine meets
    safety and effectiveness standards.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    After discussion and public comment,
  • 2:45 - 2:49
the committee will vote on whether or not
    to recommend the vaccine,
  • 2:49 - 2:51
and if so, who should receive it.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    This is the same process
ACIP uses for all the vaccines.
  • 2:56 - 3:00
The same process that has recommended
    the safe and successful vaccines
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    that protect our communities
  • 3:02 - 3:06
    from diseases that once killed
    hundreds of thousands each year.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    It is my sincere hope
  • 3:08 - 3:11
    that hundreds of thousands
    more lives will be saved
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    with safe vaccines for COVID-19.
  • 3:14 - 3:19
    However, no one tool alone
is going to stop the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 3:20 - 3:25
For now, your best protection will be a
combination of getting a COVID-19 vaccine,
  • 3:25 - 3:27
when it is recommended for you,
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    and then continuing to cover
your nose and mouth with a mask,
  • 3:31 - 3:35
stay at least six feet away from others,
    and wash your hands often.
  • 3:36 - 3:40
COVID-19 vaccines will be an important
tool to help stop this pandemic.
