April 6 - The Neighbors Noticed

  • 0:11 - 0:16
    Salvador is known throughout Brazil
for having a vibrant, unique culture.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
It boasts the fourth largest population
    in Brazil
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    with almost three million people.
  • 0:20 - 0:24
    The Adventist Church
    has experienced significant growth here,
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    with churches scattered
    throughout Salvador.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    Despite the strong Adventist presence,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    there are still
    unentered areas of the city.
  • 0:32 - 0:37
Global Mission is working to identify
    areas with no Adventist presence
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    and establish new congregations there.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    Josenildo’s neighborhood
is one of these unentered areas.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
He was known as a drunk nuisance
whose bad habits disrupted his family life
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    and the whole community.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    Arivaldo, an Adventist, lived nearby
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    and ran into Josenildo often
    on his way to work.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
Arivaldo knew he was looking for work,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
so he offered him a construction job
    building churches.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
It didn’t take long for the two of them
    to become friends.
  • 1:15 - 1:19
    Arivaldo treated him with respect,
    which made Josenildo wonder
  • 1:19 - 1:21
why he was always so kind.
  • 1:21 - 1:26
    Over time, Arivaldo asked
if he was interested in Bible studies
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    and the two began reading
    the Bible together.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    Before I met Jesus,
    I didn’t have happiness.
  • 1:37 - 1:42
When I came to know Jesus,
    my life was transformed,
  • 1:42 - 1:45
and today, for God’s glory, I am happy.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    My family also was transformed.
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    Josenildo was baptized
    and changed for the better.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    Even his neighbors took notice
    of his transformation.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    When the usual loud music
from his home stopped one day,
  • 1:59 - 2:02
everyone wondered if he was okay.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
    When they checked on him,
they saw that Josenildo was a changed man.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    He spoke kindly to them
    and treated them respectfully,
  • 2:09 - 2:13
    and they wanted to know
what inspired these changes in his life.
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    Josenildo used this opportunity
    to minister to his neighbors.
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    Every Friday night,
  • 2:26 - 2:29
they gather in his living room
    to talk about their week.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
    They bring their concerns,
    requests, and praises here.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
Josenildo points them to the Bible,
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    showing them a Creator
    who cares deeply about them.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
There’s even something for the children
  • 2:41 - 2:45
    as Josenildo’s daughter
leads an activity in the hallway.
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    This group has grown close,
    and as a result,
  • 2:54 - 2:57
    10 people have already
    been baptized this past year,
  • 2:57 - 3:00
and more are studying for baptism.
  • 3:00 - 3:05
Small groups like this one are the core
    of church planting in Salvador.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    Small groups develop into congregations,
  • 3:07 - 3:11
    and these congregations
    divide into more small groups
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    that spread throughout the city.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    Nearly five years ago,
  • 3:16 - 3:17
the church leadership in Salvador’s state
  • 3:17 - 3:22
    had an ambitious goal
of building 1,000 churches in five years.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    They reached their goal,
and the final church is being built
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    where a new congregation
    will worship soon.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
The goal of building 1,000 churches
    across the state
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    isn’t just for the purpose
    of having new buildings.
  • 3:34 - 3:38
    The church buildings represent
    ever growing congregations of believers
  • 3:38 - 3:42
    who, like Josenildo,
    have been changed by Jesus.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    Jesus is good.
    Jesus transforms.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
Just as He transformed my life,
  • 3:50 - 3:54
    He can transform anyone’s life.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
No matter the struggles someone may face,
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    Jesus has the power
    to transform their life.
  • 3:59 - 4:03
    And more lives are impacted
    as churches are planted
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    throughout the world.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
Thank you for helping us change lives
  • 4:07 - 4:11
    by supporting church planting
    through Global Mission!
