Can you solve the buried treasure riddle? - Daniel Griller
-
0:07 - 0:11After a massive storm tears
through the Hex Archipelago, -
0:11 - 0:15you find five grizzled
survivors in the water. -
0:15 - 0:16Shivering their timbers,
-
0:16 - 0:21they explain that they’re the former crew
of the great pirate Greenbeard, -
0:21 - 0:24who marooned them
after they tried to mutiny. -
0:24 - 0:28Each was bound up in a different
spot on a small island, -
0:28 - 0:31until the storm washed them out to sea.
-
0:31 - 0:34In gratitude for saving them,
they reveal a secret: -
0:34 - 0:40the island they were on is also where
Greenbeard has buried his treasure hoard. -
0:40 - 0:45But when the sailors try to describe
the island, something seems off. -
0:45 - 0:51All agree it was flat and barren with no
prominent features except for some trees. -
0:51 - 0:55Yet each pirate claims they saw
a different number of trees, -
0:55 - 0:58ranging from two to six.
-
0:58 - 1:03The pirate who saw two trees says the
treasure was buried right at his feet. -
1:03 - 1:06When you fly your hot air balloon
over the area to investigate, -
1:06 - 1:11you see hundreds of small islands,
each with exactly six trees. -
1:11 - 1:13The next storm will be here soon,
-
1:13 - 1:16so you’ll have to hurry
and narrow your search. -
1:16 - 1:20What does the island with Greenbeard’s
treasure look like from the sky? -
1:20 - 1:28And where will the treasure be
on that island? -
1:28 - 1:32Pause here if you want
to figure it out for yourself! -
1:32 - 1:33Answer in 3
-
1:33 - 1:35Answer in 2
-
1:35 - 1:36Answer in 1
-
1:36 - 1:39It might seem like the pirates
are delirious from dehydration. -
1:39 - 1:41But that’s not what’s going on.
-
1:41 - 1:45Remember, each was confined
to a separate point on the island, -
1:45 - 1:49and no two of them could see
the same number of trees. -
1:49 - 1:54That means that for all but one pirate,
something was blocking their view. -
1:54 - 1:56And since there are no other
features on the island, -
1:56 - 2:01that something could only
have been other trees. -
2:01 - 2:05A pirate would see fewer trees
when two or more -
2:05 - 2:08fell along a straight line
from their vantage point. -
2:08 - 2:10So we need to find the island
-
2:10 - 2:13where five different pirates standing
in different spots -
2:13 - 2:16would each see a
different number of trees. -
2:16 - 2:22Virtually every island has a position
from which you can see six trees. -
2:22 - 2:25And on most islands there’s a
position where 5 trees can be seen -
2:25 - 2:28by standing in line with two of them.
-
2:28 - 2:33It turns out that the hardest locations
to find are those with fewer visible trees -
2:33 - 2:39precisely because they require more trees
to line up with the viewer’s position. -
2:39 - 2:42So how can we see just two trees?
-
2:42 - 2:46One way would be if all the trees
were lined up in single file, -
2:46 - 2:48such as on this island.
-
2:48 - 2:51Then, you could stand at the end
of the line and see one, -
2:51 - 2:53stand in the middle and see two,
-
2:53 - 2:56or stand anywhere else and see all six.
-
2:56 - 2:59But there’s no place from
which you can see only three, -
2:59 - 3:00four,
-
3:00 - 3:01or five,
-
3:01 - 3:04so one straight line of trees is out.
-
3:04 - 3:07So what about two lines of trees?
-
3:07 - 3:11So long as the lines aren’t parallel
and they intersect over land, -
3:11 - 3:14there’ll always be a position
where the two lines converge -
3:14 - 3:17from which you could
see exactly two trees. -
3:17 - 3:20And if they’re grouped two and four,
-
3:20 - 3:21or three and three,
-
3:21 - 3:25there are many arrangements in which
you could also see three, -
3:25 - 3:26four,
-
3:26 - 3:27five,
-
3:27 - 3:30and six trees.
-
3:30 - 3:33Fortunately for us, there’s only
one island in the archipelago -
3:33 - 3:37with two non-parallel lines of trees,
-
3:37 - 3:42and it’ll be buried at the intersection
of the two lines. -
3:42 - 3:47You land on this island and dig up a chest
containing a massive pile of tree seeds, -
3:47 - 3:49ready for planting.
-
3:49 - 3:52Was this treasure really worth
all that trouble? -
3:52 - 3:54That’s a matter of perspective.

After a massive storm tears through the Hex Archipelago, you find five grizzled survivors in the water. As an act of gratitude for saving them, they reveal a secret – the island they were just on holds some buried treasure. But when the sailors try to describe the island, something seems off. Can you find the booty despite their strange instructions? Daniel Griller shows how.
