1st Foundational Falsehood of Creationism
-
0:01 - 0:06The US population seems pretty evenly divided over whether the human species is biologically related to
-
0:06 - 0:10other animals or whether we were specially created as part of a flurry of miracles.
-
0:10 - 0:14Even our collective politicians seemingly all of them are wrapped up in this controversy,
-
0:14 - 0:17yet it's hard to find even one of them who knows what it's about.
-
0:17 - 0:22Why is it that there's such concern in so many great schools, K through twelve, about teaching evolution,
-
0:22 - 0:27yet there is still a complete consensus among scientists all over America and the rest of the world
-
0:27 - 0:33that evolution is the backbone of modern biology and a demonstrable reality historically as well.
-
0:33 - 0:36Most people don't understand science.
-
0:36 - 0:41What it is, how it works, what hypothesis and theories are, or even the purpose behind it.
-
0:41 - 0:46Sadly even those on your school faculty or state board of education often need an education themselves
-
0:46 - 0:50before they can be trusted to govern how or what our kids will be taught.
-
0:50 - 0:53And that's why I thought I would speak up and do what I can to help.
-
0:53 - 0:55To adequately understand evolution,
-
0:55 - 0:59you not only have to understand how to be scientific, which is the real trick for most people,
-
0:59 - 1:04but you also have to know something about cellular biology, genetics, anatomy,
-
1:04 - 1:06geology, particularly paleontology,
-
1:06 - 1:11as well as environmental systems, tectonics, atomic chemistry and especially taxonomy
-
1:11 - 1:13which most people don't know squat about at all.
-
1:13 - 1:17Most people who accept evolution also tend to know a whole lot about cosmology,
-
1:17 - 1:22geography, history, sociology, politics, and of course religion.
-
1:22 - 1:29But to believe in creations you don't have to know anything about anything and it's better if you don't.
-
1:29 - 1:34Because creationism relies on ignorance. It is not honest research.
-
1:34 - 1:39It is a scam, a con job exploiting the common folk and preying on their deepest beliefs and fears.
-
1:39 - 1:43Creationist apologetics depends on misrepresented data and misquoted authorities
-
1:43 - 1:49out of date and out of context and uses distorted definitions, if it uses definitions at all.
-
1:49 - 1:52There are basically two types of creationists.
-
1:52 - 1:57The professional or political creationists, these are the activists who lead the movement
-
1:57 - 2:00and who will regularly deliberately lie to promote their propaganda.
-
2:00 - 2:04And the second type, which are the innocently deceived followers
-
2:04 - 2:06commonly known as "sheep".
-
2:06 - 2:11I know lots of intellectual christians, but I can't get any of them to actually watch the tele evangelists,
-
2:11 - 2:15because they either already know how phony they are or they don't want to find out.
-
2:15 - 2:21But that only allows a radical fringe to claim support from the masses they now also claim to represent,
-
2:21 - 2:23so there's nothing to stop them.
-
2:23 - 2:27Professional creationists are making money hand over fist with faith healing scams
-
2:27 - 2:32or bilking little old ladies out of prayer donations, or selling books and videos at their circus-like seminars
-
2:32 - 2:35where they have undeserved respect as powerful leaders.
-
2:35 - 2:40All of them feign knowledge they can't really possess and some of them claim degrees
-
2:40 - 2:42they've never actually earned.
-
2:42 - 2:44"You are a scientist, correct?"
-
2:44 - 2:47"Oh that's right, I have a PhD in Truthology from Christian Tech."
-
2:47 - 2:52Were it not for this con they'd have to go back to selling used cars,
-
2:52 - 2:54wonder drugs and multilevel marketing schemes.
-
2:54 - 2:57They will never change their mind, no matter what it costs anyone else.
-
2:57 - 3:01So it is obviously the 'sheep' whom I am attempting to reach with this speech
-
3:01 - 3:06so that they might not be sheep anymore and will stop feeding fuel in the manipulative movement.
-
3:06 - 3:09Because it is one thing to believe something which might be true,
-
3:09 - 3:12like God in general or christianity specifically,
-
3:12 - 3:16even though neither can be substantiated or tested in any objective way,
-
3:16 - 3:21but it's a whole other matter to willfully deceive other into believing things which are definitely not true,
-
3:21 - 3:23like creationism.
-
3:23 - 3:28Especially when we can also prove that those doing this know their assorted arguments are bogus
-
3:28 - 3:33and know they're lying to our children and that they hope to continue doing so under the guise of
-
3:33 - 3:34education.
-
3:34 - 3:39Creationism extorts support through peer pressure, prejudice and paranoid propaganda
-
3:39 - 3:42and sells itself with short simplistic slogans
-
3:42 - 3:46which appeal to those who don't want to think too much, or are afraid to question their own beliefs.
-
3:46 - 3:52Worst of all, it actually forbids critical inquiry and promotes anti intellectualism
-
3:52 - 3:55and is based on at least a dozen foundational falsehoods.
-
3:55 - 4:00First and foremost among them is the idea that accepting evolution requires the rejection of theism
-
4:00 - 4:03if not all other religious or spiritual beliefs as well.
-
4:03 - 4:08For decades those behind the creationism movement have tried very hard to portray the illusion
-
4:08 - 4:11that one cannot accept evolution and still believe in God.
-
4:11 - 4:12They know better
-
4:12 - 4:16but they still want you to believe that evolution is atheist
-
4:16 - 4:20and that it is either evolution without God, or God creating without evolution.
-
4:20 - 4:23That's been their central claim since the creatiionism movement began
-
4:23 - 4:27but this supposed controversy never was about whether or not there is a God.
-
4:27 - 4:30Most people believe there is a God
-
4:30 - 4:34and they believe he is in control of all the seemingly random events of our lives.
-
4:34 - 4:38This is true of most of the people who accept evolution also, most of them believe in God as well
-
4:38 - 4:41and they believe that God is in control of evolution,
-
4:41 - 4:45that evolution like every other system in nature is part of God's design.
-
4:45 - 4:50Of the couple hundred different and often violently conflicting denominations of christianity,
-
4:50 - 4:54the largest of them by far is catholicism followed by orthodoxy.
-
4:54 - 4:58Both of these have stated support of evolution and denounced creationism.
-
4:58 - 5:02Pope Benedict recently described evolution as an enriching reality and
-
5:02 - 5:06described creationist contest against it as absurd.
-
5:06 - 5:09Both of the Popes before him advised christians around the world
-
5:09 - 5:11to consider evolution to be more than a hypothesis
-
5:11 - 5:15and not to fear acceptance of that as being any challenge to their faith in Christ.
-
5:15 - 5:20The early proponent of evolutionary science were all initialy christians including Darwin
-
5:20 - 5:24and many of the leading proponents of modern evolutionary science are still christian today.
-
5:24 - 5:26For example, microbiologist Dr. Ken Miller
-
5:26 - 5:31who testified against intelligent design creationism in Kitzmiller vs Dover, is a catholic.
-
5:31 - 5:35Another outspoken proponent of evolution, Dr. Robert T. Bakker,
-
5:35 - 5:37who has PhDs from both Harvard and Yale
-
5:37 - 5:41is not only one of the leading and most recognizable paleontologist in the world today,
-
5:41 - 5:45but he also happens to be a bible believing pentecostal preacher,
-
5:45 - 5:49though he interprets genesis differently than literalists would.
-
5:49 - 5:52In his book "Bones, Bibles and Creation" he says that
-
5:52 - 5:56to treat the bible as though it were common history is to degrade its eternal meaning.
-
5:56 - 6:00One of the earliest geneticist , Theodosius Dobzhansky,
-
6:00 - 6:05was an orthodox christian who many times professed his belief that life was created by God
-
6:05 - 6:08but that nothing in biology made sense except in light of evolution.
-
6:08 - 6:11All these men agree that even if there really is a God
-
6:11 - 6:13and even if that God is the christian God,
-
6:13 - 6:17and even if that God created the universe and everything in it, which they all believe,
-
6:17 - 6:20evolution would still be at least mostly true
-
6:20 - 6:23and creationism would still be completely wrong.
-
6:23 - 6:26Of all the developed nations throughout christendom
-
6:26 - 6:31only the United States has a significant number of creationists, and they're the minority even here.
-
6:31 - 6:34Every other predominantly christian country tends to regard creationism as
-
6:34 - 6:38an incredulous, if not insane, radical fringe movement
-
6:38 - 6:42which is an almost exclusively american phenomenon and not taken seriously anywhere else.
-
6:42 - 6:46Poll after poll continues to reveal that around the world
-
6:46 - 6:51most evolutionists are christian and most christians are evolutionist.
-
6:51 - 6:55So evolution is not synonymous with atheism and creationism is not synonymous with christianity either.
-
6:55 - 6:58Most creationists aren't even christians.
-
6:58 - 7:02There are millions more muslim and hindu creationists than christian ones.
-
7:02 - 7:04Regardless which religion they claim,
-
7:04 - 7:10creationism can be collectively defined as the fraction of religious believers who reject science.
-
7:10 - 7:14Not just the conclusions of science but its methods as well and I mean all of them.
-
7:14 - 7:18From uniformitarianism and methodological naturalism to the peer review process
-
7:18 - 7:22and the requirement that all positive claims be based on testable evidence.
-
7:22 - 7:26These people rely instead on blind faith and the assumed authority of their favorite fables.
-
7:26 - 7:30In all cases, creationism is an obstinent and dogmatic superstitious belief
-
7:30 - 7:35which holds that members of most seemingly related taxonomic groups did not evolve naturally,
-
7:35 - 7:38but were created magically,
-
7:38 - 7:41that plants and animals were literally poofed out of nothing,
-
7:41 - 7:46fully formed, in their current state, unrelated to anything else despite all indications to the contrary.
-
7:46 - 7:50Creationists may side with western abrahamic religions,
-
7:50 - 7:54being the judeo christian islamic mythos in which there are conflicting versions of the same tales,
-
7:54 - 7:57or creationists may belong to one of the many eastern religions
-
7:57 - 7:59where the sacred stories of creation are much older,
-
7:59 - 8:02completely different and dedicated to other Gods and pantheon.
-
8:02 - 8:07But in every case, the proposed creator is supernatural,
-
8:07 - 8:10meaning that it is not a part of perceptible reality,
-
8:10 - 8:13therefore it is undetectable by any testable means
-
8:13 - 8:18and can only be assumed to exist through subjective emotional reasons or as a result of cultural indoctrination
-
8:18 - 8:22rather than because of any measurable evidence or logical rationale.
-
8:22 - 8:25In other words, there's no way to say if it's really there.
-
8:25 - 8:29Worst of all there's also no way to distinguish anyone's Gods or ghost
-
8:29 - 8:33from the imaginary being some primitive folks just made up either.
-
8:33 - 8:38This doesn't mean no God exist, but it does mean that science can't say anything about them.
-
8:38 - 8:41Because even if Gods are real, they still don't appear to be,
-
8:41 - 8:47and apparently don't want to since all the holy books demand that they be believed on faith alone.
-
8:47 - 8:53As there is nothing anyone can verify and thus actually note, be correct about Gods,
-
8:53 - 8:56then science is unable to make any comment about them at all.
-
8:56 - 9:00Because science can only ever investigate things with demonstrable evidence
-
9:00 - 9:03which can be tested or measured.
-
9:03 - 9:06From the creationist perspective,
-
9:06 - 9:09the method or mechanism of creation, which these mystical beings use,
-
9:09 - 9:13is nothing more than a Golem spell, where clay statues are animated with an enchantment.
-
9:13 - 9:18Or it's an incantation in which complex modern plants and animals are spoken into being.
-
9:18 - 9:25That's right. Magic words, which cause fully developed adult animals to be conjured out of thin air.
-
9:25 - 9:29Or a God simply wishes them to exist so they do.
-
9:29 - 9:31That's it.
-
9:31 - 9:36There really is nothing more to it than that. Pure freaking magic by definition.
-
9:36 - 9:40Remember that the next time you hear anything from a creation 'scientist'.
-
9:40 - 9:44So for those who believe in God, the question really is 'how God created' and
-
9:44 - 9:49whether that was by one of many inextricably integrated natural systems he seemingly designed
-
9:49 - 9:53or whether he simply blinked, wiggled his nose, wished upon a star and said
-
9:53 - 9:56"Abra cadabra!".

-
My personal rant against one of foremost falsehoods of the creationism movement; the idea that accepting evolution is tantamount to declaring atheism, or that one need be creationist to be Christian.
