Are overweight Christians false converts? - Tim Conway

  • 0:11 - 0:14
    This one comes from Dede.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
She says, "There are many people
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    in churches overweight.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
    Is obesity a sin?
  • 0:23 - 0:28
    Are overweight Christians false converts?
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    What does the Bible say?
  • 0:32 - 0:37
    Thank you."
  • 0:37 - 0:41
I'll tell you this, in all indication,
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    the high priest Eli in
    the book of 1 Samuel
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    was a godly man.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    Grossly overweight,
  • 0:49 - 0:52
    but seemingly feared the Lord.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
He was not the best high priest.
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    He had two evil sons.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
He was rebuked by the Lord.
  • 0:59 - 1:04
Samuel prophesied of the Lord against him.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    That's just an example
    that comes to my mind.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    Let me tell you something,
  • 1:09 - 1:19
the size of a man isn't the sin.
  • 1:19 - 1:27
    (incomplete thought)
  • 1:27 - 1:30
Now look, how a person is,
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    what a person looks like,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
the condition a person's in healthwise
  • 1:34 - 1:39
    may definitely be an
    indication of their sin.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
Before God saved me, I did crystal meth.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
Thank the Lord He delivered me from that.
  • 1:43 - 1:47
Have you seen some of the
    folks that have used that?
  • 1:47 - 1:48
I mean, you can see people,
  • 1:48 - 1:54
their teeth are rotted out of their heads.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
I saw what alcohol did to my dad.
  • 1:58 - 1:59
I can tell when somebody's old
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    and they've been
    drinking their whole life.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    They have kind of a
    yellow hue to their skin.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    You look at folks that
    have been on heroin,
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    that have been on crack,
  • 2:08 - 2:10
that have been on crystal meth
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    for long periods of time,
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    cocaine.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    People that overeat.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    One thing about some sins
  • 2:18 - 2:23
is you kind of wear it on your sleeve.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
I mean, some of the things
    we were talking about
  • 2:25 - 2:26
about the sins of the mind,
  • 2:26 - 2:28
the sexual passions of the mind,
  • 2:28 - 2:31
you and I can't see all those things.
  • 2:31 - 2:33
But some of the sins we commit,
  • 2:33 - 2:35
the effects of it are very noticeable.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
And there's no question about it
  • 2:37 - 2:40
that the size of a person may have
  • 2:40 - 2:43
some indication about their eating habits.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
What the Bible doesn't talk about
  • 2:45 - 2:49
    is necessarily obesity or overweight.
  • 2:49 - 2:52
What it does talk about is gluttony.
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    And typically in the Bible,
  • 2:54 - 2:58
it groups gluttony with the drunkard
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    or drunkenness.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    What do you have there?
  • 3:01 - 3:03
Is eating sinful in and of itself?
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    No.
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    The fact is you cannot
    prove from the Scriptures
  • 3:07 - 3:10
    that drinking alcoholic beverage
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    is forbidden in the Scriptures.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    But what is forbidden
  • 3:14 - 3:17
is eating more than you need
  • 3:17 - 3:19
and drinking to the point of drunkenness.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
Those two things are definitely sin.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
In fact, so much so, the
    people that practice those
  • 3:24 - 3:26
don't inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
Those fall into these areas too
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    of being red flags
  • 3:30 - 3:33
that if you're in bondage to these things,
  • 3:33 - 3:37
    there's a problem.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
Gluttons are tied to those who are lazy.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
"Cretans are always liars, evil beasts,
  • 3:42 - 3:43
    lazy gluttons."
  • 3:43 - 3:46
"The one who keeps the law is
    a son with understanding,
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    but a companion of
    gluttons shames his father."
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    "Be not among drunkards
  • 3:51 - 3:55
or among gluttonous eaters of meat."
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    Now look, obviously some people
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    are bigger than others.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
I mean, one of the questions
  • 4:01 - 4:03
that has to be asked before judgments
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    are made about anything
  • 4:05 - 4:10
is why a person is overweight?
  • 4:10 - 4:11
    I mean, some overweight people
  • 4:11 - 4:14
eat less than those who aren't overweight.
  • 4:14 - 4:21
Now, that's not to let most
    overweight people off the hook.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
That probably does bring some thin people
  • 4:23 - 4:28
    into the realm of the
    possibilities of sin too,
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    even though they may
    have a higher metabolism
  • 4:30 - 4:32
and don't show it near as much.
  • 4:32 - 4:33
I mean, there are thin people
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    that eat huge meals.
  • 4:36 - 4:37
And I'll be honest with you,
  • 4:37 - 4:41
I don't know exactly where that line is.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    You know, it does seem
    like sometimes in Israel
  • 4:43 - 4:45
they had feast times, did they not?
  • 4:45 - 4:47
    Three major feasts,
    and they would eat, folks!
  • 4:47 - 4:48
    They would eat.
  • 4:48 - 4:52
Some times of indulging in food
  • 4:52 - 4:55
seemed to be acceptable by God.
  • 4:55 - 4:59
But doing it all the time
    does not seem to be.
  • 4:59 - 5:01
I mean, the fact is this,
  • 5:01 - 5:05
not all people have the same metabolism.
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    Gluttony basically comes down
  • 5:07 - 5:09
to eating more than the body needs.
  • 5:09 - 5:11
Eating more than we need to function.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    Well, where is that boundary?
  • 5:13 - 5:14
You know, in a lot of countries,
  • 5:14 - 5:17
they don't eat till they're full.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
In a lot of countries, they
    can't afford to do that.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
We have a tendency to eat in America
  • 5:22 - 5:23
unlike they eat in other places.
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    Does that mean we're
    all guilty of gluttony?
  • 5:26 - 5:28
Maybe. Maybe more than we know.
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    But you know, folks, I
    would come back to this.
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    Remember Paul's words.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
He's not going to be enslaved to anything.
  • 5:36 - 5:38
You know just as much as my wife
  • 5:38 - 5:40
might not drink coffee for awhile,
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    you know what?
  • 5:42 - 5:43
    There's no question about it.
  • 5:43 - 5:47
Jesus Christ thinks that His people
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    will fast regularly.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    Does He not say it?
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    When you fast, don't
    be like the hypocrites...
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    Don't be like the Pharisees.
  • 5:55 - 5:56
There's a way to do it.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
Well, let me just tell you,
  • 5:58 - 6:00
if you're a professing child of God here,
  • 6:00 - 6:03
you need to give yourself to fasting.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    If you can't do it;
  • 6:05 - 6:08
    if you don't have that
    kind of self-control
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    and that kind of discipline,
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    then you know what?
  • 6:11 - 6:12
    There may be a likelihood
  • 6:12 - 6:14
even if you're a thin person,
  • 6:14 - 6:15
    you're in bondage to food
  • 6:15 - 6:17
in a way that maybe you never imagined.
  • 6:17 - 6:18
    And I'll tell you,
  • 6:18 - 6:21
you don't realize it sitting here
  • 6:21 - 6:22
when you've still got a belly
  • 6:22 - 6:25
that's three quarter full from dinner.
  • 6:25 - 6:27
You get in a situation where you fast
  • 6:27 - 6:29
for 24 hours and fast for 48 hours,
  • 6:29 - 6:32
    fast for three days,
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    and you begin to realize
  • 6:34 - 6:39
how much food really controls us.
  • 6:39 - 6:41
Let's face it, the fact is,
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    most overweight people are overweight
  • 6:43 - 6:45
because they do eat too much
  • 6:45 - 6:47
    and they exercise too little.
  • 6:47 - 6:48
You know one thing I found?
  • 6:48 - 6:50
Traveling to China, traveling to India,
  • 6:50 - 6:53
    traveling to Indonesia -
  • 6:53 - 6:58
there aren't lots of overweight people.
  • 6:58 - 7:00
    And so, what is it?
  • 7:00 - 7:03
I think San Antonio - is
    that the number one
  • 7:03 - 7:05
    biggest city in the country?
  • 7:05 - 7:07
Sometimes - it depends on the year.
  • 7:07 - 7:10
    But we've had those honors.
  • 7:10 - 7:13
I tell you, you go over to other countries
  • 7:13 - 7:15
    you don't see that.
  • 7:15 - 7:18
    The fact is, you know,
  • 7:18 - 7:20
    typically in those countries,
  • 7:20 - 7:22
    the ones that are overweight,
  • 7:22 - 7:25
    they're overweight
    because they're wealthy.
  • 7:25 - 7:27
The thing is too being overweight
  • 7:27 - 7:28
    isn't healthy for you.
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    It's not good for you.
  • 7:30 - 7:33
    These are to be temples
    of the Holy Spirit.
  • 7:33 - 7:34
You know, basically, we have a picture
  • 7:34 - 7:37
in the Scriptures of Jesus Christ
  • 7:37 - 7:42
leaving His servants with things -
  • 7:42 - 7:43
    whatever they might be.
  • 7:43 - 7:46
    Sometimes, they're
    called talents of silver,
  • 7:46 - 7:47
    whatever they may be called,
  • 7:47 - 7:49
    but you know what
    that's representative of.
  • 7:49 - 7:51
    That's representative of everything
  • 7:51 - 7:52
    that's been entrusted to us.
  • 7:52 - 7:54
Not just money, but our time,
  • 7:54 - 7:56
    our energy, our bodies,
  • 7:56 - 7:58
everything that's been given to us.
  • 7:58 - 8:00
And you know the ones who
    receive the commendation,
  • 8:00 - 8:02
"Well done, good and faithful servant"?
  • 8:02 - 8:05
They're the ones who invested wisely
  • 8:05 - 8:08
and brought a return for their Lord.
  • 8:08 - 8:10
    And we need to take
    good care of these bodies.
  • 8:10 - 8:13
If you're eating and not exercising
  • 8:13 - 8:17
in such a way that your body
  • 8:17 - 8:19
    isn't serving you well,
  • 8:19 - 8:20
    what does the Scripture say?
  • 8:20 - 8:22
It says to redeem the time.
  • 8:22 - 8:24
You're not redeeming the time very well
  • 8:24 - 8:27
if you're in a body that requires
  • 8:27 - 8:29
    a lot more rest,
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    gets weary a lot faster,
  • 8:31 - 8:34
runs out of breath a lot faster,
  • 8:34 - 8:36
when you could by correct eating habits
  • 8:36 - 8:39
and correct exercise habits change that.
  • 8:39 - 8:41
That's not being a good steward.
  • 8:41 - 8:44
    It just simply isn't.
  • 8:44 - 8:49
Folks, if you're going to run, run well.
  • 8:49 - 8:54
    Run to your maximum efficiency.
  • 8:54 - 8:57
That's all I'll say about that.
