Deaf Children Being Bullied

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    (upbeat music)
  • 0:03 - 0:06
    Did you know that
    one-in-three and one-in-five
  • 0:06 - 0:08
deaf and hard-of-hearing kids are bullied?
  • 0:08 - 0:10
A study in the UK showed
    that this bullying
  • 0:10 - 0:12
might be occurring because deaf children
  • 0:12 - 0:15
    are seen as weaker due
    to their hearing loss.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
Yeah, tell that one to Matt Hamill.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
In case you don't get the
    joke, he's an MMA fighter.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    Before we continue, I want
to say that all the links
  • 0:23 - 0:25
with the information that I'm giving you
  • 0:25 - 0:28
will be listed in the info box below.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    I'm not gonna talk about
    everything in this video,
  • 0:30 - 0:32
so if you want to read more about it,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    then everything is right at
    your fingertips, right below.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
Also, yes, bullying is a problem
  • 0:36 - 0:39
for all kinds of kids in all schools.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    However, it's Deaf Awareness Month,
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    so work with me here.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
So in the UK, in 2010, deaf students
  • 0:47 - 0:50
had the highest rate of victimisation.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    12 deaf and hard-of-hearing students,
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    six hearing students,
    four mainstream teachers,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    two mainstream managers and three
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    other staff members were interviewed.
  • 1:00 - 1:02
The researchers found that the deaf
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    and hard-of-hearing
    students were stigmatised
  • 1:04 - 1:07
and were at higher risk for
    being seen as lower class,
  • 1:07 - 1:11
    being socially excluded,
    bullied, and marginalised.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    20 deaf and hard-of-hearing students
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    between the ages of 16
    and 25 were interviewed.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
After the interview it was found
  • 1:18 - 1:20
that there was a pattern of
    these students being bullied.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
In fact, in Dundee in the
    UK, one boy was actually
  • 1:24 - 1:27
pulled out of his school by his parents
  • 1:27 - 1:29
because he was constantly being bullied.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    Even the teachers gave
    him no support whatsoever.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    Teachers, are you sure you
    picked the right profession?
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    He's not the only one.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
There was a girl who was
    called stupid and dumb,
  • 1:38 - 1:40
she was beat up in the
    bathroom for saying,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    "What, I can't hear you?"
  • 1:42 - 1:44
Because the students that beat her up
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    thought that she was
    just being a smart aleck,
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    that she was being sarcastic.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    She got suspended and
    written up for things
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    that she never did,
    but she got blamed for.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
    Standing up for herself
    got her in trouble.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    Even her principal abused
her, and also held her back
  • 2:00 - 2:02
a year for no reason whatsoever.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
On her last day of school she ended up
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    having a concussion, and
she was stabbed in the back
  • 2:07 - 2:10
four times by those little thumbtack pins.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
    Five-year-old Santiago
    Lozada from London, England,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
was bullied for his hearing aids.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
However, his mother did take the time
  • 2:19 - 2:22
to take this awful incident and turn it
  • 2:22 - 2:25
    into a more positive opportunity
  • 2:25 - 2:27
by taking his ordinary hearing aids
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    and then turning them into
    Ninja Turtles and Iron Man,
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    and basically anything that
    was his favourite cartoon.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    I mean, yeah, ordinary hearing
    aids aren't that pretty,
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    but these are pretty awesome.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    And they actually started
    becoming really popular
  • 2:43 - 2:45
in his school, and his mother started
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    selling handmade designs.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
18 year-old Tavis Green from Tennessee
  • 2:49 - 2:51
was bullied on his school bus.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
At one point he was even
    punched in the face,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    which then caused his mother
    to confront the bullies,
  • 2:56 - 2:59
which then ended with her assaulting them
  • 2:59 - 3:02
and then being put into jail
    and then charged for assault.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
There are more of these kinds of stories
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    posted all over the internet.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
One of the websites that's linked below
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    actually has multiple
    stories from different
  • 3:10 - 3:13
    bullying victims, so if you
want to read some more stories,
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    then just go down there.
  • 3:15 - 3:18
On Tumblr, on blogs, on Facebook,
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    I've seen other deaf and
    hard-of-hearing people,
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    whether they're teenagers,
    or even adults now,
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    they've posted their own stories
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    about being bullied in school.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
I've read posts about their teachers
  • 3:30 - 3:32
picking on them, about parents, their own
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    and other people's
    parents picking on them.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
A few months ago I actually
    posted my own video
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    which was a story time
    video and it was about
  • 3:40 - 3:43
my US history teacher making fun of me
  • 3:43 - 3:45
because I had an incomplete assignment
  • 3:45 - 3:47
that did not have all the facts down
  • 3:47 - 3:49
from the film that we were watching
  • 3:49 - 3:52
because I was deaf then, and deaf now,
  • 3:52 - 3:55
    and there was no closed
    captioning on the film.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
So he made fun of me to the entire class.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    I've occasionally been
    picked on by other students.
  • 4:00 - 4:03
    Occasionally I've gotten
    the giggles at a point.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    It's also happened in
    grocery stores and stuff.
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    I actually faced more isolation,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
which is a form, sort of, of bullying,
  • 4:11 - 4:14
but instead of being confronted by people
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    and being physically picked
    on and what have you,
  • 4:17 - 4:20
it was just more like I
    wasn't really involved
  • 4:20 - 4:23
with a lot of things, it was
    very difficult to get involved
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    because I couldn't follow
    everything that was happening.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    I mean really, if you're
    on a group project,
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    who wants the kid that
can't even keep up with you?
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    In the movie No Ordinary
    Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie,
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    Jacob was a deaf child
    in a mainstream school,
  • 4:36 - 4:39
the only deaf kid in his
class, who was often picked on.
  • 4:39 - 4:42
    Sammy is known for taking
    Jacob's hearing aids
  • 4:42 - 4:44
off his ears and for making fun of him
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    whenever he doesn't hear
    or understand something.
  • 4:47 - 4:49
Yes, that is a fictional movie,
  • 4:49 - 4:51
but it still happens in real life.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
There's also deaf on deaf bullying,
  • 4:53 - 4:57
    when mainstream deaf children
    walk into deaf culture
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    for the first time, there
    are times when these kids
  • 5:00 - 5:03
    will be called hearing head
    because they're not deaf enough.
  • 5:03 - 5:04
This is the sign for hearing,
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    and they do hearing head,
  • 5:06 - 5:09
    because they've been raised
    mainstream, you get it?
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    And they don't know sign
    language well enough,
  • 5:11 - 5:14
or if they didn't grow up in
    a deaf family, hearing head.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
But then you also have those deaf children
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    or deaf adults, deaf teenagers,
  • 5:18 - 5:21
    that have been mainstreamed,
    and they will sometimes
  • 5:21 - 5:23
pick on those who are culturally deaf
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    because they will see those
    who are culturally deaf
  • 5:26 - 5:29
as less-than because they don't speak
  • 5:29 - 5:33
or they don't act like hearing people,
  • 5:33 - 5:36
which is seen as the norm, or whatever.
  • 5:36 - 5:39
Notice the quotation marks in the air.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    So bullying does, indeed,
    come from all sides
  • 5:42 - 5:45
or the points of the triangle.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
Bullying is not a nice thing to do.
  • 5:48 - 5:51
    It's not a nice thing
    to have to go through.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    There have been so many
    kids have hurt themselves,
  • 5:54 - 5:57
    sometimes to death, literally,
    because of the amount
  • 5:57 - 5:59
of bullying that they had to go through.
  • 5:59 - 6:02
    Learning the best kind of
    behaviour starts young,
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    so it's really important
    that we teach these kids
  • 6:04 - 6:06
the right way to treat somebody,
  • 6:06 - 6:08
the right way to speak to somebody.
  • 6:08 - 6:10
If you happen to just not get along
  • 6:10 - 6:12
    with somebody, that's fine.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
We can't be friends with everyone.
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    But you can still treat
    that person with respect.
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    You don't have to be
    best friends with them,
  • 6:18 - 6:20
but if they trip and fall,
    you can still walk over
  • 6:20 - 6:22
and help them up if they need a hand.
  • 6:22 - 6:25
So to any kids that may be going through
  • 6:25 - 6:27
    something, please tell an adult.
  • 6:27 - 6:30
Tell your teacher, a parent, somebody.
  • 6:30 - 6:33
It isn't a bad thing to
    stand up for yourself,
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    but if you feel like
    it might be putting you
  • 6:35 - 6:37
more at risk for more trouble,
  • 6:37 - 6:39
please just tell an adult about it.
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    That's what they're
    supposed to be there for.
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    Recently I've been
    emailing a lot of middle
  • 6:44 - 6:46
and high schools here so I can help
  • 6:46 - 6:49
    bring some deaf awareness
    for their current
  • 6:49 - 6:52
    and their future deaf and
    hard-of-hearing students.
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    So if you're a teacher
    who is watching this,
  • 6:54 - 6:56
feel free to show this in your classroom.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    If you're a student,
    a guidance counsellor,
  • 6:58 - 7:01
    a principal, whoever, just
    feel free to share it.
  • 7:01 - 7:04
    Bullying is serious business,
and we need to work together
  • 7:04 - 7:07
    to keep it from happening
before the next kid gets hurt.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
If you want to follow me
on all of my social media,
  • 7:09 - 7:11
links to that will be down below.
  • 7:11 - 7:13
    If you want to support
    me on Patreon monthly
  • 7:13 - 7:16
or get merch, the links to
that will also be down below.
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    I upload every Monday and
    Tuesday unless otherwise stated,
  • 7:19 - 7:22
and I will see you later, bye.
  • 7:22 - 7:23
