0:00 - 0:03(Oscar) One time, I went to Legoland.
-
0:03 - 0:04(child) Oh!
-
0:04 - 0:07(Noelle) Because our class
does storytelling, story acting, -
0:08 - 0:10our students know
and respect each other more. -
0:11 - 0:15It's a language and literacy practice,
really, but it does so much more. -
0:15 - 0:18It helps the kids with their social
emotional development. -
0:18 - 0:21It's really community building
within the classroom. -
0:21 - 0:23(child) I went to Legoland.

0:31 - 0:34(Sarah) Amigos is a two way
immersion school -
0:35 - 0:37for students, in Cambridge,
Massachusetts. -
0:37 - 0:42At Amigos, we look to support biliteracy
in the early years -
0:42 - 0:46by really developing and strengthening
oral language skills, -
0:46 - 0:48and the students' ability to tell stories,
-
0:48 - 0:52understand the shape of a story,
and be able to share that -
0:52 - 0:54with oral language
in both Spanish and English. -
0:54 - 0:57With my mom, my dad.
-
0:57 - 1:02(Oscar) So storytelling, story acting,
we first ask a child to tell us a story, -
1:03 - 1:05and it could be a personal
story of theirs, -
1:05 - 1:07or something that they have made up.
-
1:07 - 1:09And then when it's time to do
the story acting, -
1:10 - 1:15we are actually seeing a visual
representation of their story. -
1:15 - 1:17(Oscar) And there was petals.
-
1:17 - 1:20We're actually working with language,
but at the same time, -
1:20 - 1:22we're working with elements of a story.
-
1:22 - 1:25(Oscar) You can use Legos to make a car.

-
1:27 - 1:29It has setting, characters.
-
1:29 - 1:32(child) A brother.
(Noelle) Brother. -
1:32 - 1:35(Noelle) Each day, a different student
has a turn to tell a story to me. -
1:36 - 1:38(Noelle) It was a family of turtles.
(child) Yeah. -
1:38 - 1:41(Noelle) Ah, okay.
So there was a family of turtles. -
1:42 - 1:44I take the story dictation
during rest time. -
1:44 - 1:47It's a quiet time,
so I call the student over. -
1:48 - 1:49(child) The shark.
-
1:49 - 1:52(Noelle) There's a shark in your story?
(Child) Yeah. -
1:52 - 1:54(Noelle) It just probably
takes five or ten minutes. -
1:54 - 1:55They tell me the story.
-
1:55 - 2:00(child) Then I-
(in Spanish) I need four people. -
2:00 - 2:03(Noelle) And often because
we're a bilingual school, -
2:03 - 2:06it's really a motivator for the kids,
who are just learning Spanish -
2:06 - 2:08to try to tell the story in Spanish.
-
2:08 - 2:10And then we clean up the mats,
we get in our circle, -
2:11 - 2:13and then I call the student
up to sit next to me. -
2:13 - 2:15There was a family of turtles.

2:15 - 2:17I read the story aloud.
-
2:17 - 2:20Do you want to be the baby?
>>Student: Uh-huh. -
2:20 - 2:24(Noelle) And then they are responsible
for choosing who the actors are. -
2:24 - 2:26(child) Do you want
to be the mommy? -
2:26 - 2:27(Noelle) We just go in a circle.
-
2:27 - 2:30So it's not popularity contest,
but more of just whose turn it is. -
2:30 - 2:33Do you want to be the sister?
(child) [speaks Spanish] -
2:33 - 2:35(Noelle) And they put them
in their places, -
2:35 - 2:37and then I read the story
for a final time, -
2:37 - 2:38and they act it out.
-
2:38 - 2:41The turtle said "Hi!" to the girl.
-
2:41 - 2:45(child) Hi.
I'm not the girl, she is. -
2:48 - 2:52(Noelle) Oh, so if you're a turtle,
then you have to go like that. -
2:52 - 2:55For the very shy kids, it gives
them a structure and a platform -
2:55 - 2:57and rules to be able to do that.
-
2:57 - 3:01And then the shark
ate all the turtles. -
3:02 - 3:04For other kids, it gives them that
much-needed like -
3:04 - 3:07"This is my turn. I've been
wanting this all day long!" -
3:07 - 3:09So it depends on the child.
-
3:09 - 3:14But it is very powerful for everyone
to have that kind of spotlight on you. -
3:17 - 3:18Wow, look at the shark.
-
3:18 - 3:19Look at the shark!
